• Developed and strengthened since opening in 2005

Why Barnsley?

• Barnsley ranked in bottom 10% of the government multiple deprivation index (2007) as one of the most deprived districts in England

• Borough; 9 towns and 23 villages• Population 220,000• Influenced by:

- employment deprivation

- health deprivation

- education

Employment deprivation

• Large numbers of people either unemployed or long term sick

• The working age population with limiting disability and illness is 8.6% higher than the national average

• Unemployment is 8% of the working age population compared to 6% national average

Health Deprivation

• Long term illness is an acute problem (DH 2008)

• Although improving, health is generally worse than the national average

• Early deaths from coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer are decreasing but still higher than the national average

• Obesity is higher than average; 28.5% of adults and 20% year 6 children

• Males from the most deprived areas have more than 5 years shorter life expectancy

• There are 470 deaths per year from smoking; although reducing, smoking is significantly higher than nationally

• 1/3 households live in ‘fuel poverty’

• Upward trend in drug possession and trafficking but downward trend in other crime

Education

• Many have low level or no qualifications• Few young people stay in education• Working age population with no qualification is 4.8%

above national average• 23.9% of the population have a reading age of 11 years• High proportion of children are in poverty• Higher than national average of teenage pregnancy
