The Book was in magazine format with most issues containing about 36 pages, 6.5” x 10” in size. No overall editor was identified but Arthur G. Lewis wrote a closing page with musings and, sometimes, a poem and received personal recognition in each issue from January 1900 through the final issue. Its primary audiences were passengers and potential passengers on the B & O‟s premier Royal Blue Line trains that operated between Washington, DC and New York City, but it also available to the general public. Originally available free of charge, it later also became available on a subscription basis. In his 1990 book “Royal Blue Line – The Classic B & O Train between Washington and New York”, Herbert H. Harwood, Jr. suggests that The Book of the Royal Blue was “an early precursor of today‟s „in flight‟ magazines”. The Introduction to the October 1897 issue read: “The book of the Royal Blue makes its initial appearance this beautiful month of October in royal harvest robes, anticipating great pleasure in the work laid before it, of showing forth in all its splendor the magnificence of Picturesque B & O, born again. The B & O with its modern equipment of Pullman Trains; its renowned Royal Blue Trains; its unexcelled freight facilities and magnificent terminals. The B & O as it is to-day with its treasures of mountain scenery and beautiful valleys; its historic battlefields and national parks. Those who were at the World‟s Fair at Chicago or who have since visited the Field Museum at Jackson Park, Chicago, will remember with intense interest the famous exhibit of America‟s oldest railroad. Relics of early railroading in 1826 when placed along side of the modern railroad machinery of 1897 seem strange indeed. But even so do the newer things of October 1897, show great contrast to those of October 1896. The grand old Alleghenies however are just the same to-day as they were two hundred years ago when the Indians and the deer alone knew the passes which lead to the land of the setting sun. The B & O first awoke the echoes of the mountains and the clanging of its iron horses never ceases to be heard from hill to hill day or night. The stage coach of then to the flying palace of now is but history. It is the now which concerns us and throughout these pages the excellence of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad will be portrayed.” The cover of each issue was printed in royal blue with gold lettering and embellishments. Later issues contained high quality photographs and some had extensive photographic spreads. The range of articles was quite broad, including historical essays, fiction, poetry and pieces promoting the cities and towns served by the B & O. Articles frequently addressed American history; famous Americans; world expositions and fairs; major national conventions of veterans, civic and religious organizations; and new facilities and equipment introduced by the B & O. Also included in each issue (in addition to major advertisements for and schedules for the Royal Blue trains) were advertisements for other B & O services (both passenger and freight), listings for major B&O ticket offices and the officials who operated them, and maps showing all B&O and subsidiary railroad routes. The final issue does not explain why the publication was discontinued. It may be helpful to know, however, that the Royal Blue Line train service was started in 1890 and was discontinued under that name in 1916. It was later reestablished by the B & O Railroad during the period 1935-1958.

Introduction to the Book of the Royal Blue Line

Prepared by John Geist, June 2007

The first issue of the Book of the Royal Blue Line was published by the B&O Railroad in October 1897 and publication continued monthly by the Passenger Department of the Railroad until a

final issue in April 1911. The Book was in magazine format with most issues containing about 36 pages, 6.5” x 10” in size. No overall editor was identified but Arthur G. Lewis wrote a closing

page with musings and, sometimes, a poem and received personal recognition in each issue from January 1900 through the final issue.

Its primary audiences were passengers and potential passengers on the B & O‟s premier Royal Blue Line trains that operated between Washington, DC and New York City, but it also available

to the general public. Originally available free of charge, it later also became available on a subscription basis. In his 1990 book “Royal Blue Line – The Classic B & O Train between

Washington and New York”, Herbert H. Harwood, Jr. suggests that The Book of the Royal Blue was “an early precursor of today‟s „in flight‟ magazines”.

The Introduction to the October 1897 issue read:

“The book of the Royal Blue makes its initial appearance this beautiful month of October in royal harvest robes, anticipating great pleasure in the work laid before it, of showing forth in

all its splendor the magnificence of Picturesque B & O, born again.

The B & O with its modern equipment of Pullman Trains; its renowned Royal Blue Trains; its unexcelled freight facilities and magnificent terminals. The B & O as it is to-day with its

treasures of mountain scenery and beautiful valleys; its historic battlefields and national parks.

Those who were at the World‟s Fair at Chicago or who have since visited the Field Museum at Jackson Park, Chicago, will remember with intense interest the famous exhibit of

America‟s oldest railroad. Relics of early railroading in 1826 when placed along side of the modern railroad machinery of 1897 seem strange indeed. But even so do the newer things of

October 1897, show great contrast to those of October 1896.

The grand old Alleghenies however are just the same to-day as they were two hundred years ago when the Indians and the deer alone knew the passes which lead to the land of the

setting sun.

The B & O first awoke the echoes of the mountains and the clanging of its iron horses never ceases to be heard from hill to hill day or night. The stage coach of then to the flying palace

of now is but history. It is the now which concerns us and throughout these pages the excellence of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad will be portrayed.”

The cover of each issue was printed in royal blue with gold lettering and embellishments. Later issues contained high quality photographs and some had extensive photographic spreads. The

range of articles was quite broad, including historical essays, fiction, poetry and pieces promoting the cities and towns served by the B & O. Articles frequently addressed American history;

famous Americans; world expositions and fairs; major national conventions of veterans, civic and religious organizations; and new facilities and equipment introduced by the B & O.

Also included in each issue (in addition to major advertisements for and schedules for the Royal Blue trains) were advertisements for other B & O services (both passenger and freight), listings

for major B&O ticket offices and the officials who operated them, and maps showing all B&O and subsidiary railroad routes.

The final issue does not explain why the publication was discontinued. It may be helpful to know, however, that the Royal Blue Line train service was started in 1890 and was discontinued

under that name in 1916. It was later reestablished by the B & O Railroad during the period 1935-1958.
