TIP ONE
Know the area you intend to start and considerconducting a survey.
You could do a quick face-to-face survey with aclipboard at the school gates, or hand outleaflets as parents pick up the children fromschool.
Do your research beforehand as it will pay off inthe long run.

TIP TWO
This is one of the most difficult aspects ofstarting a childcare business.
The premises you choose will have to meet thewelfare requirements set out in the StatutoryFramework for the Early Years FoundationStage (2014).
The premises should be warm and welcomingand accessible for children, staff as well as theparents.

The environmentshould be safe and secure, withspace organised topromote children'sdevelopment.
It is essential that you choose your premiseswell, as Ofsted will inspect your premises as partof the registration process.
Renting or buying?This will be determined by your access tofinance.
Have you got the capital?
Are you going to access a bank loan?But if you want to rent, make sure that you havea reasonable lease on the property.

TIP THREE
Check whether you are eligible for help. Somelocal authorities still make some moneyavailable as start-up grants, but the situationvaries greatly around the country.
Contact the Early Years and Childcaredepartment at your local counci to checkwhether they still offer any start-up funding forchildcare settings.
You could also use your savings, equity orborrow from the bank.

TIP FOUR
Before you begin the registration process, youneed to complete two initial stages:1. A DBS check2. A health declaration booklet.
The registration process looks at the ability ofthe childcare facility to provide care whichconforms to the standards for childcare settings.

The nationalstandardsare a baseline of qualitythat you, the staff and the premisesmust abide by.
During the registration process, you will need todemonstrate to Ofsted that you comply with thestandards.

TIP FIVE
Staff must be suitable to look after children,which means making sure they have had theDBS checks, and no unvetted person is leftalone with the children.
The manager of the childcare setting must alsohave at least two years’ experience as a qualifiedchildcare provider.
All staff must meet thenecessary trainingrequirements. At least half of all staff must haveappropriate qualification.
