Page Cache

• Page cache is one of the most important features of this plugin. Enable it.

• Set this to Disk: Enhanced for most web hosting servers.

Page 4: Setting Up W3 Total Cache The Correct Way

Minify

• Minify is an excellent way to boost your website’s speed.

• But since you got Cloudflare installed, leave this disabled.

Database Cache

• Database caching plays a more important role in boosting your website’s speed when you are using a VPS or dedicated server.

• Set Database Cache Method to Disk.

Object Cache

• If you are hosting your website on a dedicated server or VPS, enable this.

• If you are on a normal or shared hosting server, I recommend leaving this unchecked.

Browser Cache

• This will tremendously speed your website’s load time for returning visitors.

• 100% enable this.

Page 8: Setting Up W3 Total Cache The Correct Way

CDN

• You will be using Cloudflare’s CDN which will be covered in the later slides.

• Leave this disable.

Reverse Proxy

• Reverse Proxy is a service similar to a CDN where they cache a copy of your site pages and serve it to your visitors from the cloud.

• Leave this disable & use Cloudflare instead as their service is more suited for Wordpress websites.

Network Performance & Security

• A must-have for a 1 second website.• Find your Cloudflare API key here.

Other Not-so-important Settings

Monitoring – New Relic helps you monitor how your website is doing in actionable and easy-to-understand data.

Miscellaneous – You can enter in your Google Page Speed API key to be disabled in your W3 Total Cache dashboard.

Debug – “Do not touch” if unsure.

Import/Export Settings – You can easily export your W3 Total Cache settings from 1 website and import the settings into another website with this.

Advanced Page Cache

• I like to leave “Don’t cache pages for following user roles: Administrator” because whenever I make any changes, I don’t have to clear cache to view the change.

Advanced Page Cache

• Cache preloading is a pretty awesome feature in W3C. It lets you set a time when the cached pages will be built.

• What this does is it has the plugin pre-make these cached pages on a regular basis so that not even the first visitor has to wait on a slow un-cached page.

• Don’t forget to enter your sitemap URL into the sitemap box.

Advanced Minify

• There won’t be much settings to change for Advanced Minify because you will leave most of the minify work to Cloudflare.

User Agent Groups

• User agents means that you can set things to work differently for a visitor using a web browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc compared to a visitor using a mobile browser on an iPad or iPhone.

• If you are getting a lot of traffic from mobiles and tablets, you can segment your visitors and show them different website themes to suit their device.

Page 24: Setting Up W3 Total Cache The Correct Way

Referrer Groups• Almost similar to user agent groups. Referrer

groups segment users by referrers instead of devices.

• If you want to show a different website to people coming from Google, you can do that with referrer groups.

• This can be used to split tests your different traffic sources by creating different landing pages for each of these sources.

Advanced CDN

• No options to change here as your CDN is already configured to Cloudflare.
