Chairman’s Report

I begin my term as Chairman at a very interesting time for the Brown Swiss breed. Most milk contracts are moving away from the “white water” contract and towards a constituent based price. The Brown Swiss will be ideally suited for even more dairy farmers, a good sized cow with the higher constituents to suit the new payment contracts. Brown Swiss semen sales will be boosted for the AI companies but animal sales should also be boosted as farmers will want an instant lift to their milk price.

You can read about a very successful July Herd Visit to Clive & Pam Davies’ Garne herd in this Chimes and the interest shown that day suggests that the rise in new members will continue. The day also highlighted the high milk yields that Brown Swiss are capable of and Clive has already sold animals into “new” and existing herds on the back of this. It was also great to see and hear from new faces on the day and at the AGM and dinner which followed. I am keen to involve members as much as possible, anyone and everyone. Jenni our secretary is very much a “people” person and is always happy to hear from members, phoning the office is the best way to let us know of any ideas or thoughts you might have. The Society Council currently numbers 9 with most meetings take place in Weston nr Nantwich, being a fairly central location. Video Conferencing is being looked at as a way of reducing the travelling for some members in the future. If you feel you might want to play your part on council then let the office know or maybe discuss it with a council member on the phone or when you see them, maybe at a show. Remember that shows are always a great place to meet other Society members and have a chat. Whatever you may think, they will give you a warm welcome, it’s something that Brown Swiss people have always been known for.

This brings me to the Chimes and I hope you feel it is a good read. Hearing some comments at and following the AGM I want to say that shows are reported on because now and from the early days of the Society the showring has been an important way of getting Brown Swiss out there in front of farmers. It is not cheap to show, and is very time consuming but it is free breed promotion for the Society. The office is grateful for articles and occasionally you will find a lot written about just a few members. This is because these members have taken the time to write down these Brown Swiss related experiences and share them with you the other members. Without these articles you would simply have a Chimes with less to read about. Whoever and wherever you are, the other Society members would be interested about what you are doing with Swiss. How long have you had them, why did you try them, why do you continue to use them? Good, bad or ugly, your story is of interest. If you are willing to get involved we can send a questionnaire to help you write your story, add a phone call to Jenni along with some photos and we get you into the Chimes. Maybe you might know of someone who is using Swiss but not a Society member, this is also of interest, there are a number of farmers cross breeding with Swiss as one of the 3 crosses often used, let us know and we can get in touch with them.

If you are reading this then either you own Brown Swiss, have used Brown Swiss, are thinking about using Brown Swiss or at the very least have an interest in Brown Swiss. There are all sorts of contacts in the Chimes for you from Council members to semen companies, and adverts from UK breeders. The office phone number can be your

link to information and if you use a computer there is the Society website, updated regularly. Good luck on your adventure.

Council Chairman.

Office News

I think we can agree summer has been a kind one for dairy

farming operations, a welcome change from the wet spring; it has also been a great one for the Brown Swiss Society. Thank you to everyone who made the Showcase so successful at the Livestock Event, and to all those who worked so hard to make the Herd Visit at Clive & Pam Davies’s farm such an excellent event. We enjoyed seeing so many old and new faces and are grateful for the effort in taking time out to attend and introduce yourselves to fellow members and to council.

The Brown Swiss on show at our National Showcase at the NEC, Birmingham in July reminded us just why this breed is a superb choice. We are increasingly getting comments from visitors who say we can compete with the best. I know there are many quality animals out there that could compete in the ring and we

would like to encourage and welcome anyone who would like to compete in the future. We are also keen to encourage new judges within the society and would like to know if you or anyone

you know would be interested in coming to a judging school. Subscription Increase; It hasn’t been an easy decision but we have had to review the subscription

charges and from 2015 the new annual charge will be increased to £50 + VAT. We have thought long and hard about this and we hope you understand and agree with us that in order for us to run and develop the society we do need to increase subscriptions from time to time. I have enclosed a new standing order form for those who either want to continue to pay this way or for those who want to start paying by standing order. For those who haven’t filled in a Gift Aid form it would help us (if you are a British taxpayer) if you could send this form to the office.

Protein Award; Congratulations to Clive & Pam Davies with the winning cow for 2014: Garne Forest Flower with 461 kgs protein.

Good luck to Stephen and Catherine Temple who have been short-listed for the British Farming Awards – Dairy Innovator of the Year competition. It is a huge achievement to have gotten this far.

I wanted to say a personal thank you to three of our council members who after many years of being on council are standing down. Michael Hussey, Mike Edwards and Angus Dalton. Between them they have

served more than 50 years, they have all have been invaluable and their knowledge and enthusiasm for the breed is second to none. We wish them all the best and look forward to their continued support.

Young Members: Don’t forget we want to hear from you, to see any Brown Swiss you have, photos, articles, news – this journal is just as much yours as all our members!

Website and Facebook page; we would like some new photos and news, please send in any ideas and contributions to the address below.

There have been quite a few imports of in-calf heifers from Europe again this past year and if you would like them entered into the UK herd book please send a copy of the European registration document with your details and the name of the animals. I will enter them in as soon as I can.

I hope that those of you who have been affected by the milk price reductions can plough on through, I am certain that those who can continue to breed Brown Swiss will at least have the advantage of being able (where contractually possible) to gain from higher component payments.

Jenni Hobbs (Secretary)

Please note, copy deadline for the next issue of The Chimes is December 15th 2014.

Please send adverts, articles, news etc into the office by this date. Thank you.

Spotted out and about!

During the Society Dinner in July, those attending helped to celebrate Haydn Vaughan’s birthday. As a Manchester United supporter one of his birthday gifts was a visit to Old Trafford to see the first game of the new Season against Swansea City, and a tour of the ground the following day. Old Trafford was full with more than 75,000 fans wanting to see how the new manager Louis Van Gaal would do. With that many people in the ground Haydn and Dilys were amazed to see, just a few seats away, John Gribbon and Mark Nutsford. John was our National judge 2 years ago and Mark Nutsford owns the well known Riverdane herd and the Celtech embryo business, both are keen Manchester United supporters and regulars at Old Trafford. Cow people, even at a football ground among 75,000 people you can find someone you know to talk about cows!! Fyi, Swansea City won the match 2-1.

Message from the President

It was a great surprise and honour to be asked to be the inaugural President of the Brown Swiss Cattle Society. Having been involved with the breed for 25 years, it is a privilege to have the opportunity to represent and promote Brown Swiss around the UK.

I would firstly like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who visited and supported our open day in July. We first held an open day on the farm about 20 years ago, and 15 or so people came along. Our second open day was 10 years ago, and visitor numbers increased to 35. This time nearly 150 people came, clearly showing this is a very exciting time with interest in the breed at an all-time high!

The Royal Welsh Show has been another highlight this summer. This was the first year that we had shown cows there. As anyone who has visited the showground will know, it can be a heat trap at the best of times, but the show week just happened to coincide with the hottest days of the year. Fan and ice cream sellers did a

roaring trade! A particular highlight was speaking to so many visiting farmers from across the UK and Ireland about their Brown Swiss and hearing about the positive impact the bulls, heifers and cows were having on their herds. One herdsman in particular said he was desperate to return to Brown Swiss after he had just moved to a Black and White herd. He missed their temperament, health and manageability. It really does feel that people are now appreciating how much value Brown Swiss milk can add to their milk cheques, even those on white water contracts.

Congratulations must also go to Kevin Thomas on becoming Chairman. He has been a dedicated and longstanding member of the society, ever ready to promote the breed, especially with his great work compiling The Chimes. We have known each other for quite some years now and I look forward to working with him in the coming year.

Thanks should also go to Mike Edwards and Mike Hussey who are stepping down from the committee. They again have been tremendous supporters of the breed and good friends over the years.

Over the next 12 months I look forward to further promoting the breed and meeting people who are both new and long-time fans! On that note, I would be delighted to offer any support or answer any questions if you are starting out with Brown Swiss.

Finally, here’s hoping we can all enjoy a final few weeks of summer sunshine (!),

President, Brown Swiss Cattle Society UK.

Herd Visit 2014 Jenni Hobbs reports on the Society’s herd visit and AGM in July

Clive Davies and his wife Pam have been using Brown Swiss in their herd for 25 years now and it was very fitting that in the year that Clive became our first president of the society that we re-visited the Garne herd to see just how far they had come with the breed.

Treffgarne Farm is situated on the south east of Pembrokeshire near the coastal villages and beaches but thankfully, because the farm is a few miles inland, and hidden amongst undulating hills and woods it is quite easy to miss the inevitable Summer tourists.

Pembrokeshire may be famous for its potatoes, but it is also renowned for its grassland – 60% of the county’s agricultural land is used for growing grass and for the Davies’s whose family have been farming there since 1902 this meant it was perfect for milking cows.

Clive and Pam own 300 head of Brown Swiss, walking around the herd in the Spring on our first visit to the farm it felt like there wasn’t an area of the farm which wasn’t used for housing them. The newer shed nearest the house was where Pam was rearing the youngest, and the large open-sided shed near the bank housed some of their bulls. The Davies’s have bred some great bulls over the years and they always seem to have one available for sale. Clive still sells some semen from Garne K Acres Supreme who left a number of good animals around the UK.

Jetway and Conductor were the first AI bulls used from 1988 when Clive first became interested in the breed – almost immediately he started buying embryos from America – the Emma family being one of

his first, Garne Conductor Emma EX92 4E was a maternal sister to Victory Acres Jubilation Emory and Simon Even.

He says “our best cows have been the pures, they kept improving as we continued to cross our Holsteins, and with the Swiss characteristics coming through they just get better.”

They have utilised two buildings for the milking herd of 150 with sand bedded cubicles. Clive had the larger cubicle house extended to house the two

Fullwood Merlin robots which were fitted in 2012. They have seen a 36% increase in yield with his cows regularly producing 40 litres per day, and the high yielders peaking at 60 litres a day. The heifers routinely record 10,000 litres from their first lactation.

The data collected from the robotic milking system ensures that Clive has up to date information on performance and he now spends lots of time looking at the charts etc using Fullwoods Crystal Herd Management software. The increase in milking’s per cow has resulted in less cases of mastitis, going from 40 in 100 with the old regime, to less than 10 cows in 100 showing signs of infection now.

Clive has replaced the herds TMR diet with a partial TMR ration using 30kg grass silage, 3.5kg home grown caustic wheat, 2.5kg of high performance blend, 1kg molasses and 3kg of lucerne hay. 0.22kg of cake per litre of milk is fed in the robots using the management software, which is automatically adjusted to each cow’s current yield.

Nutritionist Dorian Griffiths spoke on the day and writes “I met Clive around 5 years ago and, I have to be honest, I didn’t know very much about the Brown Swiss at the time; however I couldn’t have met a better or more enthusiastic teacher. As well as being enthusiastic and passionate about the breed, Clive was also very clear in that he wanted more milk from his cows, and the more experience I had with the herd the more I realised that this was indeed possible.

I decided almost immediately that the herd would be treated no different to a black and white herd, as the size and capacity of these cows were comparable with their black and white contemporaries. The main difference between both herds however, is that the Brown Swiss are also able to produce very high fat and protein levels as well as milk. At the time the system was all TMR, with no cake in the parlour, with recordings once a month through NMR. I decided to change the diet, to provide more protected protein, and also introduced lucerne to provide quality fibre and therefore replace straw. In addition, a standard mineral was replaced with a bespoke mineral that better suited the grass silage.

Page 5: GERMAN BROWN SWISSbrownswiss.org/forms/SwissChimesOctober2014pdf.pdf · GERMAN BROWN SWISS follow the latest GBS news of SPERMEX: longevity + protein power + profitability! HURAY

We saw a very encouraging response of about 2 litres per cow which showed that things were going the right way, and a further gradual improvement was made over the next few years. However to reach the next level additional alterations would be necessary. Nonetheless, in 2011 Clive told me that he and Pam were going to sell the herd as they were free of TB and that the sale would be in July of that year. However, an unfortunate TB test failure meant that this would no longer take place and, in order to maximize the herd’s potential, the decision was then made to put in 2 robotic milking machines.

Following the installation of the robots, the diet had to be completely changed because we were now feeding cows during milking; therefore the concentrate had to be very palatable to entice the cows in to the robot. The outside diet was now going to be for around 20 litres and this consisted of silage, blend, caustic wheat, molasses, lucerne and minerals and fed for 20 litres with concentrates fed above this at the rate of 0.4kg/litre.

The current diet is made up of: Grass Silage 40kg Blend 2.5kg Caustic Wheat 3.0kg Lucerne 3.0kg Molasses 1.0kg Minerals 150g

This diet provides M+ 23 litres outside and a 17% protein concentrate is fed in the robots with maize, wheat and protected soya being the main ingredients. Protected proteins are included in the concentrate and blend, with protected rape being used as the protein source in the blend.

Since the installation of the robots we have also been able to ration cows individually, rather than as a group as under the previous system. This has meant that during the last twelve months the cows have started to fulfill their potential, with the herd average approaching

10,000 litres @ 4.1% fat and 3.5% protein. Good rations for high performing animals

provide both ERDP and DUP, as this maximizes efficiency. However, meeting the need for DUP can be difficult and the performance of high yielding cows is held back because rations that look acceptable in terms of overall protein content actually fail to deliver enough DUP. I believe that since we have increased the level of DUP in the diet the cows have responded and yield has

increased without affecting milk quality or fertility. The next stage for improvement is the dry cows.

Currently the far off group is fed silage and straw in the winter, but during the summer this group is allowed out on grass for approximately three weeks. In future, the far off group will stay inside all year as the diet will be of a better and more consistent quality. The close up group receive grass silage, straw, blend and minerals for approximately three weeks before calving and this is fed all year round.

I believe that the Brown Swiss herd and the robot system at Treffgarne complement each other perfectly, with high yields and quality milk being achieved. The breed has proved it can supply the necessary milk a lot of milk buyers are now requiring, but also yields that can compete with the black and whites.”

Our thanks go for the support from Fullwood,

the ladies provided some lovely refreshments, not least the welsh cakes which were very popular, and to Cowindale who generously provided free lunch for all the 150 visitors.

Narberth town didn’t disappoint as a perfect venue for the society AGM and Dinner. It is a bustling, popular town, but has retained its charm as most of the shops are still small independents. I only wish I’d had

longer to investigate!

The evening kicked off with a short AGM held at the towns Hotel Plas Hyfryd, this gave members an opportunity to discuss Society matters. Afterwards we enjoyed a meal and a few drinks to catch up and make new acquaintances. The Protein Award was presented and outgoing chairman John West was pleased to name Garne Forest Flower owned by Clive & Pam Davies as the winner giving 461 kgs. Kevin Thomas announced the All Britain results. The evening wasn’t going to end too early since it was also the 70th birthday of local member Haydn Vaughan (Cabal herd) and a great time was had by all!

The society would like to thank Clive & Pam for their hospitality – Clive has reported that since the herd visit he has had some great comments, including one from a gentleman who said he “was amazed, I only came to see the robots, but I was gobsmacked at the

Brown Swiss with their milking ability, power and strength.”

Clive is one of those people whose enthusiasm for the breed is unequalled and I challenge you to be in his presence without before long catching the Brown Swiss bug!

Old Mill E Snickerdoodle EX94

(The) The Emory‐daughter Old Mill E Snickerdoodle has

been  the  star  of  the  US  Brown  Swiss  breed  for

many years and her repeated success in the show

ring has led to her becoming popular worldwide.

Willy Allemann researched her cow family

back to 1867, his conclusion: this is one of the best

cow families the breed has ever had.

Old Mill E Snickerdoodle  traces  to a  fascinating

family.  In  25  generations  her  maternal  line  can  be

traced to Gretchen 3 imp. Gretchen was born on March

15, 1867 in the canton of Schwyz, Switzerland. Henry W

Clark of Belmont in Massachusetts, USA brought her to

the US in 1869 as part of the very first importations into

the US. Among bulls which also trace to Gretchen by a direct maternal line are  Judds Bridge Liege, Avon View Danny,

Avon  View  Ideal,  Hycrest  Crown  Prince,  Norvic  Larry's  Lilason,    Hycrest  Technician,  Norvic  Kingpin,  White  Cloud

Jason's  Likeable,  Bridge  View  Combination,  Bridge  View  Jubilation,  and  Bridge  View  Elegant  Jade.  During  the  last

century, these bulls had a massive impact on the Brown Swiss breed. Peach 4772, born in 1910, was the first cow to

distinguish herself. Then, from her granddaughter Brookside Beauty 12628 onwards, the family became well known.

Brookside Farm was in the area of Monroe, Wisconsin/USA. Norman E. Magnusson (then herdsman of Judds Bridge

Farm ) and Jake Voegeli both noticed this family and Judds Bridge Farm bought the legendary Lillian of Brookside 2nd

49411. She had three very well known offspring: Judds Bridge Liege 84810, Lila JB 139974 and Lily of Judds Bridge

12860, all three were sired by Colonel Harry of J.B. Liege, herd sire at Voegeli's (VB) became well known towards the

end of the 1940's. He became the most  important sire  in Voegelis history. This bull sired tall,  long, deep and hard

working cows that lasted. Many of his daughters lived to be older than 15 years and a good number produced over

100,000 kg milk. Avon View Ideal is the sire of J.J Ideal's Mynda 429379. She in turn is the dam of E.S. Punch Ray and

E.S. King Matt. Ray was the sire of Raymo, Rugby, Roman and Ventures ESP Babaray; while E.S. King Matt was the

sire of Mort Matt Tammy, the Dam of Starbuck, Trilogy and Tom. Lila J.B.139974 was purchased by Norvic Farm as an

old  cow,  where  she  produced  Norvic  Larry's  Lilason.  Lilason  produced  outstanding  sons  and  daughters  at  Norvic

Farm.  Lilly of  Judds Bridge 128640 EX also  left her mark. The best  known was Bridge View Aristocrat  Jolene, who

traced top and bottom to this family. Jolene is the dam of Combination and Jubilation. Jade, the sire of Starbuck, also

goes back  to  this  family. Hence  Starbuck  traces both  through  sire  and dam  to  the  family of  Snickerdoodle.  In my

opinion, this is the best Brown Swiss cow family, excluding the family of Jane of Vernon.

12  months  ago  in  October  2013  Allan  Bassler  brought  his

highly  prized  veteran  of World  Dairy  Expo  “Snickerdoodle”  back  to

Madison  at  the  ripe  old  age  of  15  to  show  as  a  dry  cow.  He  has  a

special  bond  with  his  old  Brown  Swiss  cow,  a  former  Supreme

Madison from Virginia but for Old Mill E Snickerdoodle it was one she

had  made  many  times  before.  The  15‐year‐old  cow  (who  weighs

about  a  ton)  “didn't  lie  down  once  during  the  trip”  says  her  owner

they  checked  in  to  the  show,  something  which  is  now  done

electronically,  the  young  veterinarians  asked what  her  name was.  I

told  them  it  was  Snickerdoodle  and  when  no  one  seemed  to

recognize  it  I  said,  'Wow,  we  must  be  getting  old  girl,  nobody

Snickerdoodle  was

Supreme  Champion  at  World

Dairy  Expo  once  and  Reserve

Supreme  twice  and  has  also

made  a  name  for  herself  with  a

host  of  offspring,  a  lifetime  of

milk production and a personality

to  go  with  it.  Allen  Bassler

enjoyed  showing  off  his  big  cow

and  telling  stories  about  her  to

visitors  the day before Expo was

set to open."I was giving an IV to

another cow in the barn at home

before  we  came,  and  when

Snickerdoodle  came  around  the

corner,  she  saw  the  IV

equipment  in  my  hand  and  she

took off running. She didn't want

to  have  anything  to  do  with

that,"  he  chuckled.  She  has

earned that aversion to IVs. "She

has nine lives," he said. Once she

had  to  have  15  feet  of  small

intestine  removed  after  it

telescoped  on  itself.  Another

time  she  had  a  torsion  in  her

uterus.  She  has  also  suffered

with  bouts  of  scours  and

toxaemia,  but  Allen  has  gotten

her  through  all  of  those  health

crises.

The  memorably  named

cow  also  had  two  daughters  at

last year's  show, one  in Bassler's

show  string  and  one  in  that  of

another  exhibitor.  Her  genetics

figure  strongly  in  the  breed  as

the  big  cow  has  been  flushed

nearly  50  times  and  produced  a  "pretty

amazing"  tally  of  420  embryos.  Bassler

still owns seven of her daughters.

Snickerdoodle  was  shown  last

year  as  an  aged,  dry  cow  because  they

haven't  been  able  to  get  her  pregnant.

She  has  a  But  Bassler  said  he'd  love  to

see  her  udder  full  of  milk  again;  that's

when  she  really  shines.  In  her  lifetime

she  has  produced  261,000  pounds  of

milk.  "That  probably  puts  her  as  one  of

the highest lifetime producing cows ever

to come to Expo," he said.

In  her  breed,  she  ranks  15th  for

production of pounds of fat and 20th for

pounds  of  protein  but  her  production

and her beauty are only a  couple of  the

things  Bassler  loves  about  the  cow.  "At

15  years  old  she  still  runs  around  like  a

two‐year‐old – and she's a cow that weighs about 500 pounds more than

the average Brown Swiss cow."

Allen Bassler  has  a  herd  of  12  cows  –  all  Brown  Swiss  except  for

one  Jersey  –  and  grazes  them  on  his  farm, making  cheddar  style  cheese

and  Asiago  farmstead  cheese  from  their  milk.  The  hand‐made  cheese  is

sold at local farmer's markets and vineyards.

He credits the grass‐based system for helping with the longevity of

cows like Snickerdoodle. He's proud to have bred two national champions.

He sold the other one and kept Snickerdoodle, having now brought her to

Expo nine times. "I wanted to bring her back to Expo so people could see

her again." He's become something of a mentor to people who breed and

raise  cows  that  achieve  showring  greatness  and  become  very  valuable.

"I've had a lot of offers over the years from people who wanted to buy her,

but I just knew her better than anyone else and wanted to keep her." She

has paid him back with fame that extends beyond the U.S. dairy world. He

recently  judged a Brown Swiss  show  in Peru and people  there  knew him

simply as the owner of Snickerdoodle.

Snickerdoodle 2009

Snickerdoodle wins Dry Cow @ Expo 2013

Allen  Bassler    grew  up

with  registered  Swiss  in

Maryland where his dad had 120

head  of  registered  Brown  Swiss

cows.  In  1975  young  Allen

bought  a  4‐H  calf  for  $570,

Rolling  knolls  Jolly  Dee  and  she

ended up as All American Jr. calf

that  year.  Five  generations

home‐bred from that heifer Allen

bred    Snickerdoodle.    Even  that

wasn’t  straight  forward,  Allen

had some cows being milked at a

farm  in  Smithsburg  MD,  Clet,s

Fry.  He  sent  10  units  of  Victory

Acres  Jubilation  Emory  to  the

farm to get them bred and ended

up  with  just  the  one  heifer  calf,

Snickerdoodle!

“As  a  maiden  heifer

Snickerdoodle  was  put  together

nice  and  a  good  size.    You  liked

what  you  could  see  underneath,

teat size and the folds in the skin

of  the  udder.  Very  nice  legs.  At

Md  State  fair  she  Placed  3rd  in

her class as a yearling heifer, two

full  sisters  Placed  1st  and  2nd

and were  bigger  than  her  so we

decided  to  not  take  her  to

Harrisburg  PA.  and  World  Dairy

Expo  them 2  same heifers were All American and Res. All American

that  year. When  she  calved  in  as  a  2  year  old  she  had  that  Brown

Swiss 2 year old look to her, I liked her udder but otherwise plain and

just  ok.  But  60 days  later  after  calving  she had  changed  so much  in

the body and the udder was  like the best  I had every had on one of

my cows.

Her first show was the MD. State Field day show in MD. She

was Grand  Champion  as  a  Sr.  2  year  old. Mr.  James Hill,  a  Holstein

breeder told me at that show not to let her get too fat, and I  did not

let her get fat. At the Maryland state fair no one was really looking at

her like a winner, little did they know how she would look with a full

udder of milk, but show day opened their eyes. The two heifers that

were All American and Res. All American were also at that show. I had

the most fun that day and she started a lot of talk in the Brown Swiss

Breed.

On a day to day basis Snickerdoodle has always been housed

in Upperville, VA. Allen says “she loves to have her head brushed with

a stiff brush and she loves Alfalfa hay, she will run you over for it. She

gets flushed a lot so she does not always trust me at first, I have to let

her know that I am not giving her shots then I can work with her. She

can open up doors very fast and get in the barn to steel feed. When

she breaks out she will run for it but she will always come back. When

we  go  to  a  show  if  she  is  not  on  the  trailer  you  can  see  she  is  sad

because she didn’t get to go.”

“When she is feeling good she will eat you out of house and

home, mostly hay and grass. When she  is milking heavy she gets 25

/30 pounds of grain a day 3 or 4 pounds of Alfalfa hay and the rest is mixed

grass and hays. She has her grass patty to eat from to get her grass to eat.

Nowadays  she  is dry  she gets 2 pounds of  grain a day, 10  /15 pounds of

good grass hay and the rest is not so good hay.”

Allen says “She  likes  to  travel but  the  long  trips  to Expo could be

hard on her. She would get to Expo and  look  like hell  for the first 3 days.

One year when we stopped to milk and feed her we gave her an IV bottle

of Dextrose and that made a big difference when she got to Expo.” Bear in

mind  that  with  all  her  showing,  visits  to  the  vet  etc  Snickerdooodle  has

probably travelled on road around 22,000 miles, with maybe 16,200 just to

Expo and back.

With  all  of  her  accomplishments  she  has  an  estimated  150

offspring  around  the  globe.  Her  highest  scoring  daughter  resides  here  in

the UK,  Old Mill  Starbuck  Spottie  is  scored  EX94.  Snickerdoodle  also  has

had several sons gain a proof through AI, the most successful so far being

Old Mill WDE Supreme who was Premier Sire at Expo 2013 and has a nice

all‐round  proof.  Unfortunately  he  died  young  and  there  is  no  semen

available to use today. Of course she is still producing embryos through IVF

and there are other

sons  out  there  in

use  and  more  to

come. Her offspring

are  continuing  to

add  to  her

successes,  so  far

Diarist Emma Bruce farms in Shropshire with her partner Rob Darlington. They regularly show their Swiss at regional and national shows with the Moonriver herd.

Where this summer has gone to is anyone’s guess. We seem to be hurtling towards Autumn and the nights and mornings are drawing in far too fast. Summer for us has not quite gone to plan. We had dreams of an easier season than last year and high hopes for a holiday, even just a few days away somewhere. We were looking forward to both attending our National Show at the NEC with some cattle and similarly enjoying a couple of days at the Cheshire Show.

I always deliberately avoid serving heifers and

any potentially problematic cows to minimise calving hiccups and hopefully facilitate an easier time for whoever might be looking after things in our absence hence any plans for shows etc are considered nine months in advance. I know from my past experience at farm sitting and relief work that the only Caesarean

section ever in the history of the farm or the worst calving in the vet’s experience only occur in the owner’s absence and just before the poor worker was about to go home.

One of my worst calving’s was whilst the

owner had gone away for the weekend and involved me, a vet and several contractors who had just finished his silaging. The cow was ok(ish), the calf rotten and I did not get home much before 11pm. Several days later a florist van pulled up outside our house and knowing that Rob is not particularly the romantic type, I just assumed the driver was lost. You can imagine my surprise when a beautiful bouquet of flowers was shoved in to my arms that had my name on it. The flowers were from the farmer with a card thanking me

for my efforts with his cow which I thought was a lovely gesture.

I had planned (and rather desperately hoped) to finally tackle the house and garden and knock them into shape once and for all. The house had not been lived in for several years when we rather hurriedly moved in from a house nearly twice the size of this one. Hence a lot of boxes still remain packed and crammed in to one bedroom whilst waiting for the plastering (now done) and painting (next job). The garden was (and parts still are) a wilderness and full of ground elder – a gardener’s worst nightmare and a weed that involves a lot of digging and re-digging several times over to ensure all bits of it are removed. I had even dreamt of a veg patch as productive as the one at our old house and a bit of an office upstairs, so I could leave piles of paper there which would remain as piles of paper without being scattered everywhere by an exuberant Labrador and also to be able to leave the internet on all the time (one of the cats has a fetish for internet cables and over the years has devoured three). The cats however have done an excellent job on the rabbit warren in the garden, and one has pretty much decimated the entire rabbit population in the village and now has progressed onto rats from the farm next door which he piles up at the door to greet us with. He certainly has the flesh on his frame to prove it – not bad for a cat with a heart murmur.

We had also looked forward to the AGM and to

Clive Davies’ open day in Pembrokeshire – a beautiful part of the country. We had an enjoyable few days away last year at the McColms’ open day at Stranraer and whenever the ‘Brown Swiss’ get together, there are always plenty of laughs and interesting conversations to be had.

So, at the beginning of April our relief milker

dropped the bombshell you never want to hear (particularly when they are reliable, clean, conscientious and brilliant with the cows – she even fed them doughnuts!).

Rachel had found a full time job... but when we

were able to offer a full time job could she come back she asked. We were gutted to say the least. We found someone else but after four weeks and the mastitis cases shooting through the roof, that one was on a one way ticket. The next one let us down on the morning before Cheshire Show just as we were looking forward to getting to the showground with the cattle for a couple of days. He did not turn up to milk and instead sent a text to say that he was not available to work

Visiting the Society stand at the Livestock Show

until after the show. He would not answer his phone when Rob tried to ring him. Incensed to say the least, another relief milker bit the dust leaving us to having to go back to home to milk at each end of the day.

All in all Rachel leaving left us with a manic summer. Sadly we were not able to make the AGM and open day and we did not get to show at the NEC. Hopefully next year will be different. So we are still trying to sort out the staff situation because we need too! The workload now is too much and we are both knackered!

The flies have been horrific these past couple

of months, turning mild mannered cows into demons and requiring us both in the parlour for the first half of milking in the afternoons. If we had had a relief milker they would probably have run for the hills! The cows had been treated with Swish – they have too here as some of the fields adjoin woodland and when the flies and other biting critters are bad the cows will not settle on those fields. The large parlour fan, copious amounts of water from the volume washer and enough fly spray to knock down an elephant, never mind us, helped slightly. I suppose though you could not help but have sympathy for the cows as we were bitten too by flies, midges and some monster horse flies. Our milk recorder commented that the situation was the same on all her farms. At least the tail end of Hurricane Bertha has improved things from the fly point of view just not if you have still got corn to harvest. Thankfully we have not.

The cows have milked really well this summer.

Last year’s Swiss heifers have calved in for the second time and having just recorded this week, we were pleased to see how many were doing above 35kgs. The highest is predicted to do just over 11200kg in 305 days and yes that is a purebred on twice a day milking. The highest yielding crossbred second calver predicted to do 12100kg is due to calve again in 363 days and with a week to go before drying off is still walloping out just over 27kg a day. We are delighted with this year’s heifers – it is always nice to see how much they alter and develop after calving. We try to calve most of our heifers at 24-26 months as they are normally big enough. We have just served some heifers to calve at 23 months as they are racing away from us in terms of size. It must be the Cheshire air!

I always keenly await the first calves by the

bulls that we have chosen to use. The last few weeks have seen the arrival of several such calves. The Swiss

calves are always photogenic but we have three heifer calves by Don that are probably the most attractive calves we have ever had. Beautifully put together with a perfectly shaped head in the most gorgeous colour coats and right little characters, I look forward to watching them grow and eagerly await the arrival of the rest of his calves.

Rob went to check on the dry cows the other

morning whilst I was milking only to discover that the milkers that had been through the parlour had taken a detour on to our maize field on their return to the grazing ground and were happily enjoying a post milking snack on the maize. He said they looked as happy as me in a chocolate shop but I am not sure what he meant by that! After an assortment of choice words to the cows they came back to the correct field. They had mainly only been round part of the headlands (and onto someone’s garden) with a couple of cows meandering back through via the footpath – we knew it was useful for something. We are lucky that the maize field has a tall monument on it with a staircase and viewing platform which came in handy for checking that there were no stragglers lurking in 25 acres of 7 foot tall maize. The damage was minimal and the people were fine about the garden so despite a big fencing job and one cut teat (I just dried her off a week early), we were quite fortunate.

Something I know that I must catch up with is

our pedigree registrations. They do after all make up the backbone of the Society’s income. Most of our Swiss and Holsteins are registered but I seem to have got behind with the Swiss (there are far more Swiss calves than Holsteins). The Holstein heifer gets registered because she has to be done before 60 days old (or before 42 days to avoid the late registration fine) if you do not wish to fall foul of Holstein UK.

The Swiss calves can be registered at any age

but where I fall foul is remembering to do them all before 60 days because I use Webreg and Webreg will

Rob with the cattle at UK Dairy Day

Page 18: GERMAN BROWN SWISSbrownswiss.org/forms/SwissChimesOctober2014pdf.pdf · GERMAN BROWN SWISS follow the latest GBS news of SPERMEX: longevity + protein power + profitability! HURAY

only accept calves up to 60 days old. Webreg is available 24 hours a day, Telereg is not and registering calves (and doing passports, internet banking, emails etc) usually gets done at night. Hence anything which gets forgotten or Webreg will not accept tends to sit on a ‘to do’ list and that is one hell of a long list! So long is this list that heifers are now calving in which I am finding not to be registered so they (and their calf) go on the ‘to do’ list again. I am determined to square this up steadily over the next year to avoid the third

generation being on that list. Unless our situation changes and we find an

opportunity to expand, we will almost certainly have a surplus of heifers next year due to sexed semen and a not particularly high replacement rate. Somebody pointed out recently that pedigree animals do tend to make more at auction than non pedigree and buyers for some subconscious reason prefer to take home a pedigree animal even if they have no intention of registering any subsequent offspring. From our own experience of buying cattle I would have to agree although a decent non pedigree animal should always make more than a poorly conformed pedigree one.

Hopefully we will find a suitable relief milker in

the next few weeks which will give me a chance to hit that ‘to do’ list before winter strikes. If I look at the piles of paper stacked on the sideboard through half closed eyes then it does not look quite so much like Mount Everest – a situation that I am sure many can relate to!

It was a great honour to be invited to judge the Brown Swiss cattle at the National livestock show at the NEC in July, there was a great atmosphere at the show right from the start and the Swiss cattle on parade certainly did the breed proud with high quality cattle competing for all the classes.

First in were the milking 2 year olds and what a heifer we had to lead the class and the heifer championship, Brian Miller’s out of the now famous Picasso Trulla is up there with the best heifers to grace the show ring in recent times showing great breed character and style, this combined with her faultless udder made her a an easy choice for the top spot.

4 and 5 year olds were next in and what a pair of cows we had contesting the top spot with both Jonathan Lochhead and Rob McColm producing their big guns on top form, there can be though only one winner and it was Soulseat Jublend Beatrice just getting my decision over Keder TD Reia, the winner having the advantage in her wonderful front end, rump width and being slightly higher in her rear udder attachment, taking nothing away from the second cow though she is perhaps the best cow I have ever had to place second in all my years of judging.

Aged cows were to follow and this time it was Jonathan Lochhead’s Kedar Becks Karolin taking the red ribbon over Soulseat Zola Marion by virtue of her true breed character and quality of teat, and teat placement.

Cow Championship

Day one concluded with the championship and my 1st and 2nd cows from the intermediate class, Beatrice and Reia were an automatic choice for champion and reserve with the heifer Trulla getting an honourable mention to be 3rd in the finale

Day two kicked off with 8 calves under 12 months of age making an awesome start to the morning, quality as well as quantity was in abundance and at first glance they

looked a tough bunch to sort out, however one calf was standing out like a diamond amongst the other jewels, Kedar Rhapsody from the Lochhead’s stole the hearts of both the judge and the ring side to nail down the top spot, this daughter of the reserve champion from the previous day showed such breed character, style and mobility to head The West families lovely calf Farrick Jongleur Ellie ET, the quality of all the calves in this class was a pleasure to see with all showing great promise of making great cows for the future.

Maiden Heifers were in next and yet another daughter of the Miller’s Picasso Trulla this one by Sun Made Vigor took top honours, this one may even be up there with her older sister in the future, following in second was another fabulous heifer from the Lochead team Kedar Calvin Sanchia Maria a daughter of Old Mill Starbuck Spottie. Final class was for in-calf heifers and again what a pair of youngsters doing battle from the Lochhead’s and the McColm’s, first choice was Soulseat Jackpot Dee by Superbrown Jackpot just getting the nod from another daughter of Spottie this one by Scherma Glenn Blooming.

Junior Championship

Six wonderful calves made an impressive sight as they lined up nose to tail across the ring with four heifers in contention for the top honours, being asked to judge these cattle was as previously stated an honour but it was also with much pride that I had such quality animals to place in this finale with all the show men and women showing good grace, so not letting my heart rule my head it was Brian Millers maiden heifer Sedgemoor Vigor Trulla taking the top junior honours over my 1st and second in calf heifers from Rob McColm and Jonathan Lochhead, Soulseat Jackpot Dee and Kedar Snickerdee, with the winning calf from the first class Kedar Rhapsody getting a special mention. This champion heifer of the Millers is just so stylish and exhibits great dairy strength she brought a memorable breed display to a wonderful conclusion

The National Brown Swiss Showcase at the Livestock Show is our main show every year. What could entice you to bring cattle along. The Champion animal gets presented with the Cimarron perpetual cow bell, and gets the Spermex cow bell to keep. The facilities at the show are really good, there are visitors from all over the UK and abroad, but we would like to see more cattle there. You will meet lots more Brown Swiss people through being there and get to know the people who already exhibit, and everyone will be happy to help. Do you think it’s the right time of year, the right venue? Would you prefer to not have young-stock there? Let us know if there are reasons why you don’t show or if there’s anything we can do to help get you there!

Manor Farm Brown Swiss

The Davies family have been farming at Manor House Farm in the village of Neston just outside the Wirral for over fifty years, brothers Les and Ron run the farm in partnership along with their sons Jonathan and Mark.

Jonathan oversees the milking herd while Mark is more involved in the tractor work. Ten years ago the family were milking Holsteins and getting lots of milk but not without health and feet problems. Research was done and Brown Swiss came up as a possible alternative. Les comments “People were telling us not to cross breed our cows with Swiss as we would devalue our herd”. It so happened that Jones Peckover (Auctioneers) were having a sale at St. Ash with some cross-bred Swiss in it, so I went along. I found the opposite to what people were saying. The cross-breds were in demand and topping the sale. This gave us the confidence to give it a go”.

“Clive Davies of the Garne herd in Carmarthen was contacted and Clive really sold the breed to us, telling us about their longevity, their sound feet/legs, quiet temperament, good components and a good cull cow when she has done her time.” A bull was purchased from Clive out of the Flower family that had just won the breed championship at the Dairy Event along with a heifer from the Wilma family by Garne Sydney, which has since gone on to breed well within the herd.

They currently milk 340 Brown Swiss and Brown Swiss cross cows with usually about 60 dry cows, averaging between 30-33 litres a day all year round at 3.7%F and 3.26%P, and cell counts of 100. When the

family first moved to Manor House it was 200 acres. They now own 400 with a further 200 rented. Cows calve all year round and are housed full time. Silaging is done with their own labour and a self-drive, self-propelled forager is hired. 300 acres are taken for 1st cut, with another 250 for 2nd cut and 200 for 3rd. Another 200 acres of maize is grown. The diet consists of 15kg grass silage, 22kg maize silage, 12kg blend, 7kg brewers grains, 100grams acidbuff

and a mycotoxin binder. The far off dry cows are

grazed in the summer with the near calving cows receiving a specialist pre-calver diet with a high Dry Matter and starch factor.

All cows are served to Brown Swiss by natural service, 12 bulls are used for serving at any time with 4 of these free to run with the cows for 3 weeks while the other 8 are resting. This system has been developed over the years as Jonathan found that leaving the bulls in with the cows all the time meant they tended to go sore on their feet because of too much work. The system does have some flaws as Jonathan explains, “there always has to be two people around if you are in with the cows for safety, the bulls are very territorial, and any bulls showing signs of turning

aggressive are immediately culled.” Bulls are usually weighing in at over 1,000kg at culling with the top so far being 1,260kg. Approx 6 young bulls are sourced a year, Jonathan likes to buy them as young as possible so they can be reared as a group and move into service in the same group to keep fighting to a minimum. When sourcing bulls Jonathan is looking for strong cow families with several generations of VG/EX dams with high yields and components, he currently favours American bred bulls.

170 heifers are reared a year, with calving age at around 27 months, although this is being looked at to get nearer to 24 months. 100 of these heifers are contract reared from weaning to bulling weight. The longevity of the Swiss means that surplus fresh cows and heifers can be sold through Mold auction where they are finding they have plenty of repeat customers already.

Cow comfort is high on the list of priorities. Sand is currently used in cubicles on top of concrete but cows tend to drag a lot out, currently 20 tonnes a week is being used. Mattresses are being given a trial with a dusting of sand on top. Large fans have also been fitted in one the sheds to aid ventilation as it was found yields were dropping in hot weather. A new shed purposely designed for the dry cows is now under construction as they see this is one area they can make significant improvements.

The vets from Liverpool university and visits are weekly for fertility work. Students tend to come along with the experienced vets to gain practical skills in a real farm scenario. Cows are vaccinated IBR, BVD, Lepto and Salmonella

The Davies are now looking to fine tune their system as they don’t see cow numbers rising in the future.

WIND MILL FARM BOASTS TRIPLET HEIFERS

On June 2, 2014, Wind Mill Farm delivered three live heifer calves named Meanie, Miney and Moe, from Wind Mill Jenner Mynce, a 6-year-old Brown Swiss cow. This triplet phenomenon is not the first for this Brown Swiss farm in Pine Grove, PA, however, it is the first time all of the calves were healthy heifers. According to Holstein World, the fact that all three calves are live heifers makes this a 1 in an 8 million chance.

Mynce had been in the calving pen for a few days and as soon as she broke her water, Dennis Daubert, co-owner of Wind Mill Farm, and Andrew Daubert, calf specialist on Wind Mill Farm, checked to make sure she was okay. Dennis found “too

many legs” and so he and Andrew immediately began working on getting the first calf out. The first calf, a heifer, was backwards but was successfully delivered. Again, Dennis checked for the next calf and again found “too many legs.” Thankfully, this calf was in the correct position and was delivered successfully and to the relief of her helpers, was found to be a heifer. Once the first two were out, the third came, even though she, too, was backwards. After the calves were placed in their own hutches, the more important objective became to keep them healthy, growing and of course to focus much more attention on Mom. Mynce is thankfully doing wonderful, considering her ordeal. Regular attention from Ronald Daubert, co-owner of Wind Mill Farm, and Dennis is provided to Mynce as her health is of utmost importance for the success of this experience. This story just brings so much more attention to the constant care all Moms and babies receive on dairy farms. There is constant vigil and awareness, regardless of whether that calf is one of three triplet heifers, or just another bull.

Did you see?

Brown Swiss seem to have been appearing on our TV screens lately one way or another. In the adverts for the TV coverage of the tour de France, a group of Brown Swiss were seen being led (or dragged) as the cyclists sped past. One South Wales Jersey breeder commented that it was Welsh Brown Swiss breeders preparing for the Royal Welsh group of 5!!! You’ll agree it’s a sight most of us have seen at some point!!

In July the European Athletic Championships were taking place in Zurich with comprehensive coverage on the BBC, who were very impressed with the Swiss cowbells, having a big bell on set which they rang every time a British athlete won a medal (more often than you’d think!). The official mascot for the championships was Cooly the cow, a Brown Swiss cow, who became quite well known for her (his?) antics. The BBC had three cardboard Cooly’s with a Gold, Silver & Bronze medal and they stuck a photo of the successful UK medallists on them. “Go Brown Swiss!!”

Stranraer Show 5 am, not my usual time to get up through the summer

holidays, add another 5 hours. Getting up is the hardest part of a show for me! Anyway, by the time I awoke from bed, the first run of cows had left for the show, and the sound of Dad shouting impatiently for me to “get ready”, (not the exact words, but I thought I’d keep it PG).

So, downstairs I went to prepare a few rolls for the day, and had a strong (very strong) cup of coffee to keep me going. I don’t know if you can tell how much I like my sleep! It seems to be a running theme throughout this report. Then off to Stranraer rugby field for Stranraer Show!

We off loaded the last load of cows and the team went to give the cows a touch up, then the organised chaos began.

The first class went in, then the second, then the third, and then I was showing. Showing is one of my favourite hobbies, it’s something different, and something enjoyable – what more could a girl want? Anyway, I got second with our heifer Soulseat Pitagora Molly(VG 83) to Robert Buchanan’s (Tintoview Holsteins and Jerseys) Brown Swiss heifer, which is a great cow to come second to. We then went on to win the any other breed championship with Soulseat Jublend Beatrice (3rd calver, Ex 93) , and Mr Buchanan came Reserve.

Then for the supreme championship. A Holstein, an Ayrshire, a Jersey and our Brown Swiss. ‘No chance...’ I thought to myself. The judge wandered, looked, touched, chatted, and then spoke about the line up of the cows. He then went to tap out his champion. He stuck around the Ayrshire for a while and at that point you sort of regret not putting a bet on it, but he then wandered over to our cow and gave her a slap on the rump. Dad’s fist flew into the air, and Daniel and myself gave a big smile, and a high-five. Absolutely brilliant! People were taking photo after photo after photo. Although I can’t say much, as I was doing the same!

I wandered around the show, got my freebies, and returned back to ‘camp’ ready for the parade. It was a proud moment when our Brown Swiss cow was leading all the animals around the ring. We waited a bit before it actually started, but then in we went and around and then back, to take them home before the celebratory drinks!

Personally, Stranraer Show is one of my favourite shows, I don’t know why, but you always have a great day – even if it’s raining. It just has a great atmosphere, full of people you know, and it also has the biggest beer tent out there!
