German and Japanese Concentration Camps

Auschwitz• Was created on May

26th, 1940. Known as “The Death Factory”.

• Estimated that 2.1-2.5 million were killed.

• Located in Oswiecim, Poland.

• Developed reputation for torture and mass shootings.

Terezin (Terezienstadt)• A city, built NW of

Prague in 1780.• Located in

Czechoslovakia.• 97,297 died, including

15,000 children;only 132 children were known to have survived.

• Was checked out once by the Red Cross, said to be OK.

Bataan March• During the March,

76,000 POW’s were bound, beaten, or killed by the Japanese.

• Only 56,000 prisoners reached the camp alive.

• Thousands later died from malnutrion and disease.

Burma Rail Road• Located in Thailand.• 16,000 allied POW’s

and 60,000 Asian POW’s died.

• Major General Takuro Yamashita encouraged rape, murder, and pillage among his troops.

Execution Methods

• Some prisoners were worked to death.

• Some were killed because of “medical” experiments.

• Most were gassed and shot in large numbers.

Medical Experiments

• Nazi medical experiments: a prisoner is submerged in a tank filled with cold water. The goal of this type of experiments was to check how long German pilots, who had to parachute into the cold north sea, would survive. Different types of clothing were tested, as well as different methods for reviving the experimental subjects who survived.
