Magazine Purpose and GoalThe purpose of GenZ TeenSmack® is two-fold. First of all, to gain the attention of Generation Z teens, ages 13 – 17, and provide them an avenue to anonymously reach out to professionals for advice. Secondly, creating an opportunity for peers to glean information from the professional advice they deem appropriate and useful to their lives and situations. The print edition along with its’ e-version will include timely articles on topics important to this group such as social issues, technology, trends, sports and education… while engaging them with “cool” print and interactive components such as YouZone, MusicZone and Media/TechZone. The Zones will include surveys, contests and forums for such things as technical support.

The goal of this magazine is to provide a safe avenue that creates an anonymous stage for conversation among teens experiencing similar problems and feelings; while simultaneously creating a sense of ‘Generation’ as readers learn about and relate to peers through common interests, problems, cultures, strengths and objectives.

Video GamesGen Z is the most aware generation in recent history, so it’s no wonder

most teen boys see video games as a cool escape from reality.

Sports & ActivitiesTeam sports are the coolest and most common way for Gen Z to connect & serves as the antidote to tech-overload. Football & basketball are most watched; soccer, basketball & running/track are most played.

Food & DrinkGen Z may be the most evolved generation, but they’re still pimply teenagers with cravings. Teens love junk food & get almost 17% of their calories from fast food.

Reading & KnowledgeNo airs amongst Gen Z – reading is right up there with video games as the coolest activities. Teens love learning & knowing.

Mobile is still king - Smartphones, all things iOS & VR/Augmented reality are the coolest things in tech.

Gen Z Phone Ownership

MusicTeens think music that makes them ‘feel’ something is cool. Playlists include a mix of newer and oldie artists.

Social media is for consuming & connecting, not sharing. Shapchat & instagram are the coolest platforms. Facebook is still a daily habit for consumption and stalking, but rarely for posting; not seen as cool.

Media & EntertainmentTop 4 coolest streaming platforms:

1. Youtube2. Netfilix3. Spotify4. Hulu

Beauty

It’s cool to be you- confidence & integrity! Not only is inward

important, but teens also acknowledge that appearance is

another way to be beautiful – and their fave brands include: Mac, Clinique, Nars, Maybelline,

Neutrogena, Tarte and Too Faced.

Clothes & FashionShoes are the currency of cool for Gen Z. Obsessed with shoes – within the clothes/fashion/beauty category almost 30% say shoes are the coolest. Top 3 brands are Jordan, Converse, Vans.

Dear Friend,It is totally understandable that your girlfriend’s history of suicidal thoughts and actions has you feeling concerned. Most people realize that suicide is a serious mistake and solves nothing. We all make mistakes throughout our lives, but suicide is one of those permanent ones. There are some details that you didn’t include, which may lead me to make some assumptions.

It seems your girlfriend trusts you enough to share her past and that is a good thing. Her history might make you feel as though you can’t completely trust her or how she might react to tough times. Also, if you are attracted to happy people, I can only guess she must be pretty happy these days. Sometimes when we learn good and bad details of someone’s history, it naturally paints them in a different, but not necessarily bad, light. I personally admire anyone who has found better ways to cope with stressors after they learned the hard way about how NOT to handle stress. It may indicate a degree of strength, rather than weakness, and that is very admirable.

If you ever have any fears that she might feel suicidal again, seek interventional help through a resource such as www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org this lifeline is available 24 hours every day 1-800-273-8255.

Finally, about your feeling that you don’t know her anymore, I would say that you actually know her better now. Nobody is perfect. We all have aspects to our history that others might find questionable, even worrisome, but a good relationship is built on trust and communication, and your girlfriend seems to have those two important factors going for her.

So, my girlfriend tried to commit suicide long before we got together. It scares me because I like being friends with very happy people and she is usually happy but I feel like I don’t know her anymore. Can you help me try to figure this out?
