A fresh new approachWe are a family owned New Zealand company specialising in premium Pesto’s, made with fresh herbs and natural ingredients to ensure every pot has exceptional quality and taste.

The origin of Genoese Foods lies at Parkin Farms which is in the lush growing area of the Horowhenua, the ‘Food Bowl of New Zealand’.

In 1993 the original partnership of Parkin Farms and Sean Kerins needed a name for their ‘Pesto’ company. Pesto is a traditional Italian condiment. With it’s roots in the city of Genoa (Genova) in the Ligurian region of Northern Italy. Hence, the name ‘Genoese Foods’ was born.

The fresh herbs used in the manufacture of the pesto sauces were originally only grown in the Horowhenua, but when Parkin Farms expanded it’s asparagus growing operation to Fiji, they decided to grow the herbs there also. Due to the warmer climate the herbs grew wonderfully well, and all year round.

Careful crop management, harvesting and unique processing of the herbs helps capture the sweetness and freshness you taste when using our products. ‘Pesto’, the Genoese Food.

Our passion for fresh ingredients is what we’re all about, leading us to begin farming in Fiji to grow fresh basil and other herbs all year around so you can create delicious dishes for your menu.

Fiji’s year round climate is very similar to summer temperatures in Genoa, Italy. Basil flourishes year round in this ideal growing environment.

We fly fresh basil to NZ weekly to make small, handmade batches of Fresh Pesto, Tapenade and Chunky Pesto Dips.

Our Kiwi farm manager John Kemp, born in NZ raised in Fiji is a close family friend and excellent horticulturist.

Passionate about making sure the best tasting plants are used to enrich the pesto flavour, John runs the farm using biological farming methods to enrich the soil and is moving toward organic farming methods as much as possible to achieve healthier plants with longer lasting freshness and taste.

The 18ha farm is 2 minutes from the Nadi International Airport; a staff of 17 hand pick and pack only the best herbs.

Product QualityAdditional to our Food safety programme, we operate a product and service assurance program to ensure every aspect of product quality, service and experience is monitored and maintained to the highest standards.

Product TestingScheduled routine pH, water activity and sensory testing is conducted internally. All microbiological testing is conducted by an external IANZ accredited laboratory

Certificate of AnalysisGenoese will provide a Certificate of Analysis for products supplied when requested by the customer.

Genoese’s Processing FacilityOur factory is of the highest standard, our pesto’s are manufactured in a filtered positive air pressure, and temperature controlled facility.

Product PositioningGenoese pestos sit on the chilled shelf in stores with either dips or chilled ready meals / quick and easy meals like fresh pasta and pasta sauces.

Stored at 4°C our pestos have a 90 day shelf life from the date of manufacture. We produce pesto daily in small batches to maximise freshness and taste.

Manufacturing for tasteWe manufacture in small batches to lock in the flavour and taste in every batch and pot we fill.

Selected ingredients are lightly blended without heat treatment, which is reflected in our consistency on quality and taste.

We have taken a simply approach to packaging to minimise waste and maximise reusability.

Chilled DistributionThe cool chain is critical; it starts at the basil fields in Fiji where the fresh herbs are brought down to an ideal temperature – ready for shipment to NZ. The herbs are carefully handled to ensure the cool chain is maintained throughout its journey to our NZ factory. To verify this, the temperature of every shipment is electronically monitored.

The pesto is blended in a temperature controlled environment and then stored at 4°C.

All products – are then distributed from Genoese by temperature controlled transport.

The products suitable for either air or sea freight for export markets.

Where necessary, the product can be frozen and stored to extend the shelf life from 3 months to 6 – 9 months.

Andrew Parkin

My role has evolved over the years at Genoese and I now run the business.

A background in engineering has allowed me to manage the business in a more strategic, planned way, staging growth, consolidating processes and investing in innovation.

We are poised for export growth in 2011 having consolidated our ranges, minimised our cost structure to be more competitive and sharpened our new product development activity to really lead the market growth in our sector.

We will never compromise on quality and taste, always looking to deliver the product in the best condition, in the best packaging for a fair price.

Sean Kerins

Sean is a founder of the business and heads up our Food Service Division here in New Zealand. Passionate about food and pesto, Sean has been a willing partner in the quest for fresh basil as our signature ingredient.

Working with chefs in this wonderful industry that has gone from strength to strength here in New Zealand, Sean knows the importance of the quality, consistency and taste of each and every product we present. Listening and learning to feedback over the years has tweaked our brand and we never stop learning.

Working with our food technology team, Sean is forging ahead with the Industrial ingredients business, providing pesto’s and herbs based

products to other food manufacturers for products like , Pizza’s, breads, pasta sauces, gourmet cheeses and dips.

Ground Pesto sauced from nature

Traditionally, green pesto is made from a delicious combination of fresh basil leaves pounded with garlic, parmesan, pine nuts and olive oil, we have not changed a thing!

We think our pesto should coat every piece of pasta, making it drip with colour and flavour. It’s also fantastic with meat, fish and vegetables, spooned over potatoes, replacing butter or used as a stuffing to add a twist!

It is preservative, gluten, soya, MSG free.
