History of the IEEE
Formed in 1963 with merger: – The AIEE (American Institute of Electrical Engineers,
formed in 1884) and– The IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers, formed in 1912).
From its earliest origins, the IEEE has – advanced the theory and application of electrotechnology
and allied sciences;– served as a catalyst for technological innovation;– supported the needs of its members through a wide
variety of programs and services.

The IEEE Today
• more than 365,000 IEEE members in over 150 countries• publishes nearly a third of the world’s technical literature in electrical engineering,
computer science and electronics• IEEE Xplore® digital library contains more than 1.2 million documents • over 100,000 technical professionals attend the more than 300 conferences sponsored or
cosponsored by the IEEE• 900 active standards and more than 400 standards in development, including the IEEE 802
standards for wireless networking• IEEE Foundation provides approximately US$2 million in philanthropic support each year • IEEE Medal of Honor: Past recipients have included such visionaries as:
• Guglielmo Marconi (1920, for radio telegraphy)
• William Shockley (1980, for junction, analog and junction field-effect transistors)
• Andrew S. Grove (2000, for pioneering research in metal oxide semiconductor devices and technology)
