UTTAR PRADESH STATE RURAL LIVELIHOOD MISSIONUTTAR PRADESH STATE RURAL LIVELIHOOD MISSION
Chief Minister Message
The Government of Uttar Pradesh is committed towards the wellbeing and
development of the rural poor households in the State. The prosperity of our State rests
on the equitable participation and main streaming of rural poor households. This
cannot be accomplished without empowering the most vulnerable and marginalized
sections of our society especially rural women.
Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission has been established with an
objective of alleviating poverty and empowering rural poor women by organizing them
into self-owned and managed institutions i.e. Self Help Groups (SHGs). Village
Organisations and Cluster level federations, which will act as vehicles for leveraging
financial assistance from banking institutions and the private sector thereby ensuring
sustainable livelihoods to rural poor households. The Mission will organise more than
one crore rural poor households into almost 10 lakh SHGs over a period of 10 years.
I wish the Mission the very best as it sets out to achieve this daunting task.
Moreover, I congratulate Mission on compilation of 'Hamari Kahani Hamari Zubani', the
success stories of poor women whose lives have moved towards betterment. I am
confident that woman from each poor rural household in the state will get rid of poverty
through Self Help Groups.

Message
The Rural Development Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh has taken
several initiatives for development of people residing in rural areas. Uttar Pradesh State
Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) is an effort in the same direction. UPSRLM was
formed as a society in 2011 to implement the Government of India's flagship programme,
the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). NRLM is a radical departure from the
earlier Swarn Jayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojna (SGSY) as it seeks to harness the inherent
capacity of rural poor to come out of poverty. The Mission will focus on empowering
rural poor specially the most socially excluded groups. The objective of the Mission is
to saturate each & every village in the State in the next ten years by ensuring that at least
one woman member of each poor household becomes a member of a Self Help
Group(SHG). It would also evolve innovative strategies for enhancing the livelihoods of
rural poor households in the State. I am pleased to know that the women whose stories
have been captured here, and others like them, have been able to improve their lives by
virtue of their membership of community institutions. I hope that each one of us would
support the Mission in its endeavors to eradicate rural poverty from the State.

The National Rural Livelihood Mission is a commendable effort to invest
intensively in the capacity building of rural poor households. The programme makes a
paradigm shift from a supply driven to a demand driven approach. It seeks to create
institutions of the poor that play a catalytic role in enhancing capacities, financial
literacy, access to financial institutions and collectivization of income generating
activities for advancement of livelihoods of people on a sustainable basis. The Uttar
Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission provides a purposeful interface between poor
households, Panchayti Raj Institutions, public-private organisations and other
agencies of the Government as it seeks to accomplish this task. The Mission seeks to
unleash the inherent potential of the poor specially the most downtrodden and
marginalized sections like Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Minorities, Women, etc
by giving special impetus to their inclusion, capacity building, skill development, and
financial intermediation. I am sure the Mission will play a leading role in poverty
eradication and livelihood advancement in rural Uttar Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission was established in 2011 as a
society under the aegis of Department of Rural Development to implement the National
Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) with the singular objective of eliminating rural
poverty. The Mission firmly believes that the “poor have innate capabilities and a strong
desire to come out of poverty”. The Mission acknowledges that social mobilization and
institution building of the rural poor are the foundation stones for achieving this
mandate. NRLM's objective is to reach out to all the poor families, link them to
sustainable livelihoods opportunities and nurture them till they come out of poverty
and enjoy a decent quality of life. Towards this end, NRLM has put in place dedicated
and sensitive support structures at various levels. I compliment the Mission in bringing
out this testimony of successful community interventions which I am sure would act as a
source of inspiration for all of us to redouble our efforts in eliminating the scourge of
rural poverty.

The National Rural Livelihood Mission was launched by restructuring the
erstwhile Swarnjayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojna (SGSY). NRLM seeks to remedy the
shortcomings of SGSY like vast regional variations in mobilization of rural poor;
insufficient capacity building of beneficiaries; insufficient investments for building
community institutions; and weak linkages with banks leading to low credit mobilization
and low repeat financing. The underlying spirit of NRLM is that “poor have capacities
and an inherent desire to come out of poverty”. The Mission focuses on social
mobilization, institution building and capacity building of the rural poor. The
Institutions of the poor – Self Help Groups, their federations and livelihoods collectives
- provide the poor the platform for collective action, based on self-help and mutual
cooperation. So that they become a strong demand system on behalf of the poor. They
build linkages with mainstream institutions, including banks, and Government
Departments to address their livelihoods issues and other dimensions of poverty. The
Mission ensures that these Institutions of poor involve socially excluded groups
particularly women. Through this compilation, it is indeed heartening to learn that how
community institutions are transforming lives of the poor rural women across the State.

Message
The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) is an effort to foster development
and create opportunities of livelihoods for the poor rural households within the State.
The Mission believes that the poor should form, own and manage their own self-
sustaining institutions. NRLM endeavours, through its dedicated sensitive support
structures and organizations at various levels, to reach out to all the rural poor
households, and take them out of poverty through building their capacities, increasing
their financial access, and self-managed self-reliant institutions. This is accomplished
through placement in jobs, and nurturing them into profitable self employment and
enterprises. The institutions of the poor gradually take charge of supporting their
members to be in control of their livelihoods, lives and destiny. I am sure this
compilation of success stories of women from all across the State will inspire millions of
other women to undertake the arduous journey towards prosperity, with renewed
vigour and confidence.

Message
NRLM has an ambitious mandate. It aims to reach out to all the rural poor families
and link them to sustainable livelihoods opportunities. It will nurture them till they come
out of poverty and enjoy a decent quality of life. Mobilising the poor into their
institutions needs to be induced by an external sensitive support structure. Government
agencies, NGOs and civil society organisations, Local Self Governments, Banks and
Corporate sector can play this role. With time, as the institutions of poor grow and
mature, they themselves become sensitive support structures. The dependence on
external support structures should decline over time. Their successful and empowered
members and leaders take charge of and accelerate many of these processes. Thus, the
programme for the poor becomes the programme by the poor.
The women whose stories have been so movingly captured in this compilation,
have successfully made the transition from poverty to prosperity by adhering to these
principles. I am sure NRLM will inspire many such success stories all across the State in
the years to come.

It was not easy for me to talk to strangers. It was not
acceptable that I could suggest something to my in-laws or
tell my husband to take care of our children today, as I have
to go to the bank or to participate in training programme. I
have changed; I am not like what I used to be.
I was so engrossed in my daily chores that taking out time
for meeting with neighbours or relatives was unthinkable.
This was only possible during festivities. Earlier I would
hardly think of meeting with each other. Despite living
together for so many years, I never realised the
importance of meeting with each other or sharing our
problems. However, this realisation came with regular
participation during SHG meetings, which gave us
opportunity to share jokes, our problems and together we
have developed an unimaginable bond among us.
I was deserted by my husband. I had to bear the responsibility of 3 daughters and a son. There were
times, when I was in need of money. It was not easy for me to get credit. Moneylenders were not ready to
provide even small loans. Even if they did then they required some collateral like our jewellery, land etc.
that too for that they will charge exorbitant rate of interest. Whatever I used to earn went away in
repaying expensive loans. I first took a small loan from SHG to meet my domestic needs and repaid the
loan by doing small labour works. I then took a loan of Rs 15000/- and opened a general store shop in the
village.
It was not easy to become member of SHG. My brother was not ready for me to become a member of SHG.
He said that nobody from our family will join SHG. He would often get angry whenever discussion took
place in the house. He was not ready because some of his friends have told him that “your sister will go
out alone for three four days to other villages in the name of trainings and God knows what they will do to
her”. Villagers will say different things about you and this will bring bad repute to me and the family. But I
was firm on joining SHG, as I didn't have enough money. Often when my children would fall sick or want
to buy clothes during festivals, I would have to depend on my contractor or my family for that money and
would have to hear something or the other, which I didn't like. Thus I wanted to save some small money
so that I can start something of my own.

Kusma is a proactive leader of her group.
She has been able to rebuild her life after
she was deserted by her Husband. Her
habit of regularly saving in SHG enabled
her to open a Shop, which provides
income for her family. She was not only
able to improve her living conditions but
motivates other women too to overcome
their woes.
Once I joined SHG, I and my brother had an altercation. For days we didn't talk to each other. He was not
happy about it and was not ready to listen. However, gradually he did understand the importance of SHG
in my life and started supporting me. He would often come down to our training place and sit outside to
know what is going on.
I was not the only one who faced this problem. Similar problem was faced by Gyanwati didi. Her husband
too was not ready for her to join the SHG. Her husband was alcoholic. He would often spend his earned
money on drinks. She was always short of money for meeting necessities like for daily groceries,
household repairs, children education etc. He would often come drunk and will misbehave with her. This
habit was increasing day by day. She was quite worried about his behaviour and quietly joined SHG.
One day her husband, after having altercation in family tried to commit a suicide. He put kerosene on
himself and set himself on fire. He was badly burned and lot of money was needed for his medication but
nobody was coming forward to support them. When, I went to meet Gyanwati she was crying. She told
me that she desperately needed money to save her husband's life and she has asked for the money from
relatives but nobody is providing her money. I told her why you are asking everyone for money. You can
take loan from SHG. She took a loan of Rs 16000/- from SHG for his medication.
Our lives have changed just because of SHG. I am no more dependent on my parents or my brother. Today,
I have my own shop. I have been able to do mint cultivation on batai. Some of my SHG members have
bought some lands; some have started doing mint farming. Earlier nobody used to know me but now
people and officers come to meet me. My family respect me and recognise my contribution to the family.

Our hamlet is known as hamlet of snake charmers in
Hanspura. All the households in my hamlet are Schedule
Tribes. Our ancestors had migrated long time back from
West Bengal.
We were initially beggars and my husband would roam
and beg. In monsoon we would catch snakes. Then my
husband would travel to distant places to show snake
charm. There were times when we didn't have twice a day
meal and have to content ourselves with a single meal in a
day. Our house didn't have a roof and we didn't have
enough money to buy thatch. Those were quite difficult
days. We had no land and I would have to do labour on
others land for which I used to get very low wages.
When CRP asked me and other women like me to form the
Self Help group we were not ready as we didn't have
enough money to do weekly savings. CRP regularly come to me to explain that if I can save Re 2 per day
then it will be Rs 10 in a week. This motivated me and I considered this as possible. However, the
challenge was not limited to savings only. Neighbours would scare us that if we took loan from bank and
didn't repay. We shall be put behind the bars.
Block officer advised us not to worry about such arguments. You will have to pay what you will borrow
from bank. Why you would borrow so much, which you cannot afford to repay. All this is being said just to
discourage you from forming SHG. Second what is the harm in trying; your savings are with you. This
gave us some strength and we agreed to form SHG.
Initially I was not able to express myself. CRP would often encourage me to speak. SHG first taught me
how to speak, express myself and enabled me to overcome my internal hesitations.
Indeed there were times when moneylenders would not give me loan. If they did it will be on a high cost
of Rs 10-20 per 100 rupees. But because of SHG I didn't have to look towards them anymore. I brought a

A decade ago it was not easy for me to get a loan. Only
those households would get credit which could mortgage
something. It was much difficult for me to get credit as
we were poor and didn't have much to mortgage. We
didn't have adequate space for making a shed for goats,
forget about buffaloes. Apart from that there were lot of
restrictions on women; it was not socially acceptable
that we go out alone for our own work and interact with
men.
I had to struggle a lot. Even for saving in SHG I would
save from grocery purchases. My husband was against
joining SHG. He would not permit me to join SHG. I
become part of SHG without his consent initially but
when our son fell ill and we were in need of money, I gave him money; he asked me from where
you got this money. I hesitantly told him that it was from SHG. He didn't say anything but
accepted the money for our sons' treatment.
Today I don't have to look to anyone for credit. Now, I have been able to overcome all hurdles to
get money. My SHG has a substantial saving of Rs 1.25 lacs, which is still growing. This saving is
after we have distributed profit among all the group members. I first learned to regularly save in
group. After that I learned to take loans from these savings for my household needs. We also got
financial support from government. With this support we purchased buffaloes. Buffalo milk
provided us income. However, local milkmen did not give us good prices. We raised this issue
with project staff. A meeting was arranged with Parag dairy and the dairy agreed to purchase
our milk. This increased our household income from sale of milk at better prices.
The local milk man getting to know that we are going to sell milk to dairy. First he increased the
price of milk. Then started telling us that dairy will not give good payment. But we knew that he
will decrease the price once we abandon our dairy. With increased prices and enhanced income I

felt confident. We took another loan from bank and bought more buffaloes. Now we were having
more volume of milk, which could not be properly handled at collection centre. Looking at our
efforts other households in the village too started selling milk to dairy. After seeing the quantity
of milk at our milk collection centre, a chilling unit was opened in our village.
We did not limit ourselves to SHG but we formed our cluster federation too. The important thing
which our federation did was to raise the issue of liquor shops spoiling the environment of our
village. Then we all agreed to put pressure on the liquor sellers. With our federations' efforts, we
were able to shift the shops away from the village. I am really proud of what I have been able to
achieve in my life.

My husband didn't have much land. We were struggling to
feed our children. I would often tell him to look for other
employment opportunities but this would often end up in
an altercation. I realised that encouraging him is going in
vain. I will have to do something to earn for betterment of
my family. Whenever the idea of going out for work was
discussed, it was met with uncomfortable silence. The idea
of daughter in law going out of house to work did not go well
with my in laws.
In the midst of these deliberations, I came to know from
our relative about the newly formed Self help group in our
neighbouring village. I was enthused to form the SHG. I
tried to discuss it with my husband but he said in a profane
manner that we don't have to form any group. Meanwhile
I further got some more information about SHG from my
neighbours and again tried to persuade my husband to
take me to the concerned office. I said to him that I am high
school pass, will be able to maintain the records and there
will be some income from SHG. Our financial condition is
not good and our children's future depends on good
education and on assets we can create for them. Finally he
agreed and we went to the Block office, where I was
provided full information about SHG and how it provides
some opportunity to save for meeting our daily needs and later assistance from banks and government
for starting income generating activities.
After this meeting with Block office, I was determined to form SHG. I would often go from door to door to
convince other women in the village. With lot of perseverance, I was able to form Gauri Shanker Self Help
Group. I would regularly visit Block office and enquire about the next steps, which enabled me to guide
my other members from time to time. Soon, our group was graded and we received our first financial
assistance from bank and government. All this was not easy for me. Often my husband and in laws would

criticise me for participating in SHG meetings. They would say that you will not get anything, its waste of
time. At times I was told that a good nurtured woman should not go out of village alone. Even this
criticism was not limited to my family; some people in my village too would comment on my going out of
village and would come to my husband to tell him that “someday your wife will run away with someone.
The enormity of these challenges did not forestall me.
Meanwhile, I was getting identity within my village, as one who has knowledge, converses with block
and bank officials. The officials from bank and block office would come to meet me too. Looking at this,
other women in the village started approaching me to know what we do in SHG meetings. How it will
enable us to get out of poverty? What our SHG will get from government? They would also share their
problems with me. I started guiding them to form their own SHG. I motivated them to come with me to
the Block office. This turned out to be the beginning of another journey in my life.
The Block office was impressed by my efforts. Looking at how I am motivating other members of my
village, they offered me to become a resource person for them. They assured me that “if I will form SHG's
then they will pay me some money”. I was thrilled to hear this. I started putting my best efforts and
formed some 20 SHGs in a short span of time. At the same time we reached a stage where my group was
looking forward for starting some income generating activity. Some of our members were engaged into
incense making. They convinced all of us that it's not difficult to learn and will provide reasonable
income. After deliberations and discussion with project office, we got training on incense making from
project office and commenced our incense production.
The project office supported us in establishing linkages with technical and marketing agencies. In the
process, we were able to develop good relations with Fragrance and Flower Development Centre-FFDC,
which extensively supported us in procurement of raw materials and marketing. Today, I produce one
quintal of incense per month. I am able to fetch Rs 4800 per quintal price and earn a profit of Rs 2300 to
Rs 2500 per month. With support of project office, I have participated in many fairs in the State.
My family has also accepted my efforts. Now there are no comments, when I go out to participate in
meetings, for trainings or for going to bank. I am very happy for providing financial assistance to my
husband. My earnings has enabled us to send our children to school and take care of deteriorating health
of my father in law. I am so happy to see that now people come to me for their work in Block office, which
gives me sense of achievement and enjoy respect from everyone.

I was landless and earned my livelihoods by doing daily
labour. We didn't have food for whole year, we were quite
poor. Our house was made of mud and we would go for
open defecation.
I had no idea about SHG. I was engrossed in daily
household works. Whenever, I was in need of money. I
would borrow money from money lender for marriages,
education, day to day domestic expenses. He would lend
money only if I could mortgage my jewelry or some
valuables and that too at very high interest rates. Even for
smaller borrowings of Rs 100 to Rs 500, I had to go from
one house to another.
When I was asked to form SHG, I was not ready to form
SHG. I was thinking what will I get from SHG? How much
money will I get? How much I would have to deposit in bank and how much grant will I get? These
thoughts were preventing me to form the SHG. However, our facilitator informed that by forming SHG we
can economically help each other.
Then I decided to form the SHG. Whatever will happen, will be seen latter on ! After forming SHG, I faced
lot of problems like first there was no one to write the books of SHG. But gradually a local book keeper
was mutually selected by all the members. Subsequently, I had to go out of village to participate in
meetings and trainings and leave behind children, due to which my husband would get angry with me.
Then opening of SHG bank account was another. I had to visit bank several times after which I we were
able to open our SHG bank account. This never dither me from going on because I always felt that now I at
least have some savings in my hand.
After forming Self Help Group, I got lot of new information, which brought change in my life. First, it
developed confidence within me. We took several times loan from SHG from Rs 2000 to Rs 15000, which

Earlier, when the water level would recede in river, I would do vegetable cultivation with traditional
method but now I use good quality seeds and our productivity has improved. Earlier, I didn't have
enough vegetables so I would just take vegetable bucket to market but now my vegetable yield has
increased and I have opened a vegetable shop in the market.

I lived on the bread earned through doing labour work
for which I would get only Rs 30 to Rs 40 per day.
Moreover, I could only get this labour work for 10 to 15
days in a month. My house was a bamboo shed. If
someone in our family fell sick, we had to borrow money
from our neighbours and relatives. Often I would face
situations where people were not willing to lend
money. They thought that we don't have the capacity to
repay their loans.
I was informed about the Self Help Group that “it
enables its members to come out of poverty”. However,
the first challenge before me was that I didn't have
money to save. My husband was not ready to give me
money for depositing in SHG. I discussed this issue
with the project staff. He suggested an idea that “while
cooking food, I could save some rice and wheat grains. Then can sell these grains at the local
shop”. Whatever amount I get from selling the grains, we could decide that as regular saving
amount for SHG. This is how I joined in my group and started saving within SHG.
SHG has substantially contributed in improving my life. I took small loans from SHG for
fulfilling my household needs. My SHG got financial assistance from SGSY for our dairy
proposal. All of us purchased buffaloes and started selling milk, which enhanced our incomes.
This gave me lot of motivation.
We further discussed with project staff what else we could do to enhance our livelihoods. After
discussion with project staff we decided to learn pickle & jam production. We got training for
making pickle and jam. After which, we initiated production of pickle and jam and sold it in
market. Subsequently, the project gave us opportunity to participate in Saras fair and other
fairs. Our Group participated in Lucknow, Varanasi mahautsav, Kashmir, Mumbai, Delhi and

My economic condition was not only low but my social
status within the village was equally low. This was not
only my situation but other members of my group too
were living in similar conditions. I had to depend a lot
on my husband for monthly savings within SHG. I
always felt hesitant while going out of house alone.
There were days when some men in my village
considered that I am not a good mannered woman, as
strangers would come to meet me. I too would go out of
village to participate in trainings. They would often
tell my husband “to check your wife. She is creating
bad environment in the village.” Some would say that
“you will regret once your wife will desert you”. But
despite such storms, I didn't abandon my Self Help
Group.
I used to save from daily wage earned through labour work for monthly savings of SHG. As often
my husband would not give money to save in SHG. This challenge is difficult to comprehend. It
took some time for him to acknowledge that these savings were beneficial during emergencies
and crisis, when we didn't have to look or knock at our relatives and neighbour's door for money.
It's has been a complete turnaround. Not only my husband but the entire village has now been
accustomed to our habit of conducting SHG meetings, our frequent meeting with officers and our
going out of village to attend trainings. Today we have been able to save Rs 24000/- among
ourselves. This is a big amount for us. Earlier having this much money was unimaginable to me.
Now, I don't have to think again from where I will get money to buy seeds, new clothes etc. I have
been able to buy some jewellery for my daughters' marriage. I am able to take loans from SHG
for my day to day needs. Now, I don't have to beg for credit from money lenders or mortgage my
belongings with him.

SHG is not merely about thrift & credit. SHG has given me
the most precious thing in life. My husband was having
illegitimate relations with another woman. Each
evening he would come to home spending all what he
has earned during the day on the second woman in his
life. While returning to home he will stop at her place to
give her money, buy her groceries. When he would enter
the house he will be completely drunk, would beat me
and my children horribly on inquiring anything.
I was not able to understand, why he has become so
irritating and rude to me. But gradually, I did figure it out
about his relationship. I would often wait close to the
entrance of the village and try to look for him from
distant at the time of his return. Even, after discovering
about his relationship with the women I could not
muster the guts to ask him or inquire about his
relationship. This went on for some time; I was becoming sad and was finding myself a bit helpless.
During SHG meeting, some members asked me “didi you have become quiet is there any problem? You
don't talk! What's the matter” At this point I could not hold myself and the tears rolled down. Then
everyone consoled me and asked to tell them what the problem is. I then told them what I am going
through. They all said that they are with me and will extend all support. This gave me lot of confidence.
Everyone suggested that firstly I will have to confront with my husband and catch him. I finally decided to
confront him and caught him with the second woman in his life. I could not resist myself an started
beating the woman who has encroached on my happy married life. I am happy that all is over now. My
husband had to face so many taunts of my SHG members. They forced him to swear that he will always
remain loyal to me.
This incident bolstered my self-confidence. Unfortunately Suman my SHG member faced a similar
tribulation in her life too. Her husband was alcoholic and was in habit of regular gambling. One day her

husband didn't have money for gambling so he took away all the jewellery of Suman and mortgage it for
Rs 5000/-. She tried to stop him but he battered her and left her helpless crying at home. She came to me
and told me about the whole incident and requested me to do something about it.
I told her not to worry and went out to call all other group members. We all went to the place where he
was playing cards and put pressure on him to tell with whom he has mortgaged jewellery. He was angry
first but we told him that before you do anything, just think if we all women started beating you, what will
happen to your reputation. Realising the situation he calmed down. Then we arrived at a decision that
SHG will lend Rs 5000/- to Suman for release of jewellery but this loan would be repaid by her husband.
Her husband was spared on the wow that he will not gamble and will not beat his wife again. I often tell
women that can any amount of money would have been able to bring our husbands back. It is only the
pressure of women that checked our husband's behaviour. Hence, to me and our group, SHG is more than
finance and credit.

I wanted to further study but my marriage was
solemnized after completing my intermediate.
Unfortunately my husband was not doing any
work. We were having financial problems. Soon our
family got expanded and our financial problems got
manifold. I was often thinking that I will have to do
something to change our lives. One day, I came
across a book at my uncles' house, which had many
production techniques.
I decided to start producing candles but I didn't
have the money to start it. I also didn't want to ask
any one for the money. However, finally I borrowed
Rs 4000/- from my grandmother and Rs 3000/- from
my brother and initiated candle manufacturing. I repaid their loan through candle sales. This
did not go for long as the electricity supply increased and increased use of inverters, the demand
for candles fell considerably. During this phase my daughter fell sick. We had to incur lot of
expenses on her illness, which further weakened our financial condition.
In the meantime, I got awareness about SHG. I identified and motivated other members of my
village to form SHG. First we would meet in a month for savings. These savings enabled us to
meet are small needs. After six months our group got Rs. 25,000/-. This money was used for
production and packaging of chips. This was the beginning of my dream.
We also got loan from bank, which we invested in packaging of our chips business. We got a shop
allocated through support of Swarn jayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojna-SGSY for sale of our chips.
In our first representation in Saras fair, we were able to earn Rs 50000/-. We all were very
pleased with the response in fair. Now, we are planning to start production of pickle. I am happy
that with enhanced income I am able to send my children to good school. I have also been able to
arrange for our small own house. My life has changed and now my husband too supports me.

It has been a long journey for me, we were quite
poor. In my SHG only four members had some 2-3
beeghas of land and the rest of us were landless. I
am from backward caste. I would earn my bread
doing labour work in village. Even for small needs, I
would have to look towards moneylenders or Rajput
households.
I used to annually borrow money from Rajput
households, before the onset of monsoon for
agriculture and repay the entire loan along with
interest at the time of harvest”. It was not only that
I had to borrow money from them but for a loan of
more than Rs 1000/-. I would have to mortgage my jewellery and would be charged Rs 5 per Rs
100/-. If the loan was big then I would migrate. With money earned from migrating I would repay
the loan to moneylenders.
I did not join the Self Help Group easily. I was confused, whether to join or not. Often my
neighbours would discourage me by saying “they will take away your money” or “they will trap
you in bank credit”. Then a meeting was convened with facilitator. All the members participated
including the block officials. During this meeting they discussed the benefits of SHG, what is the
process of bank loan and repayment. We were clearly told that bank loan is cheaper than the
loan provided by moneylender. The bank loan can be repaid in easy instalments. This motivated
me to join the group. I did not want to remain dependent on moneylenders for my entire life.
Two members of my SHG were misled by their relatives and they left the group. Even some other
members were on the verge of leaving the group but we discussed and clarified that this is an
effort to fails us. Since that day till today my SHG is functioning well. We had to struggle a lot to
open our bank account. This was again a point where we thought to disband our SHG.
Often there were some conflicts within SHG with respect to bearing the cost of bank visits and
trainings but we never lost hope. Today each one of us feels that we took correct decision to
continue with SHG. 17

Usha Devi is from backward caste. SHG has
enabled her to reduce her dependence on
moneylenders. The group has been able to

literacy levels of its members
Today, it has been a turnaround, I take small loans from SHG and repay in easy instalments. My
interest is with my SHG. It does not go to anyone else, which increases our fund. We utilise this
fund in times of need.
We took a loan of Rs 4.0 lakh and all of us bought buffaloes and sold milk. This gave me some
income, which enabled me to meet my household's expenses. I first sold my milk to local
milkman but he did not give me fare prices. Now I sell my milk to dairy on fat basis. My SHG
member, Malti has bought a pump set by a loan from SHG. Earlier only three members were
able to do signature now all the members of SHG have learned to do signatures, which has given

My village does not have adequate access and means
of transportation. This creates hindrances in going to
market, offices and hospitals. The major transport is a
railway which is located some 3-4km from village in
the midst of forest. The way to railway station is non-
metalled road with risk of wild animals and thieves.
My social and economic living standard was quite
poor. I had to always look towards other households in
the village to meet my small & meagre needs. I would
get loans at exorbitant rates of interest some would
charge up to 5 per cent per month. Even if, I repay the
loan I would not get respect and often I would not get
loan at the time of need. I had little knowledge about
banks and felt scared going to banks. Before joining
SHG, I used to think that I will never get out of
poverty. I was born poor and will die as poor.
Once I joined SHG, lot of rumours started circulating within the village like project people will
run away with your savings! You will not get any support from government programme! If you
took loan from bank your land and house will get confesticated. You will not be able to do
anything and so on. But without heeding to these rumours, I continued to attend SHG meetings.
Even after the formation of SHG, the road ahead was full of challenges. First challenge was to
open the bank account. To open the SHG bank account, I had to visit bank several times, which is
located some 13 kms away from our village and is across the forest. The bank was not ready to
open our bank account as we didn't have adequate identity cards. The identity cards, which we
had, were not being recognised by bank. This led to several visits to bank and I almost got de-
motivated.

Despite the adversaries of being from a
marginalized community and residing in
an isolated village, she never let the ray of
hope for her economic freedom. She
pursued her dream of being self

through financial assistance from SHG.
She now enjoys respect from her family.
I wanted to be self employed but I didn't have the money to start it. I took a loan from savings of

SHG how to stitch.
We have a saving of Rs 28000/- in our group, which helps us to meet our needs. We have also got
Cash Credit Linkage from bank of Rs 25000/- which further enabled us to meet our raw material
and procurement needs. Today I am more confident. I constantly think of increasing our savings.
As woman, I have been able to overcome barriers. I have gained respect in my family. I don't have
to look towards anyone for credit anymore. This has opened lot of opportunities for me. Now if I
am in need of money or credit to start any business, I can take loan from SHG or Bank.

SHG has brought about a turnaround in my life. Earlier
we didn't have much money. My husband didn't go to
work and income from agriculture was meagre. It was
difficult for me to visualise becoming part of SHG, as I
didn't have much to save. I would often think from
“where I will bring money to regularly save in SHG
meetings. What my group members will think of me if I
was not able to deposit saving amount. I was able to
overcome this dilemma with the support of our group
facilitator. Who told me that the group must decide on
such a saving amount, which the poorest member can
easily save. We arrived at the decision to save Rs 10 per
month, which I was easily able to do.
I first took a small loan of Rs 500 to buy good quality
tomato seeds. Through tomato cultivation our family
earned a profit of Rs 5000/- We were very happy with this
experience. Then I took second loan of Rs 5000/- for doing
peppermint cultivation. This time we had a earning of Rs
50000/-. Our family was thrilled. We were easily able to repay this money to SHG.
This turnaround is not only for me but for our group member too. My SHG member Choti
Ramrati lost her husband in accident. She was left with a responsibility of taking care of
children including the responsibility of two grown up daughters. She was worried about their
marriage. She had eight biswa of land and had to work as agriculture labourer on others fields.
Being a woman she was underpaid, which was not enough to feed her family. She considered her
priority first to marry her daughters respectably. She was able to marry her two daughters
through financial assistance from SHG.
We all have been able to do something for our families. I was finally able to release our
mortgaged land. Since, I have joined SHG. I don't have to look towards anyone for giving me
credit. I don't have to depend on relatives or feel embarrassed, while asking for money. I have
been able to overcome my economic hardships. I am now trying to give better things to our
children. I feel good whenever he says that you have supported me a lot in life.

I had a mud houses with no toilets. I was almost
landless. My household income depended on seasonal
labour. Before joining SHG, I had to borrow money from
moneylenders for marriage, sickness and other
household needs on high interest rates.
I was told that an SHG should have 10-15 members.
SHG will get bank loans at low rate of interest. The
project will give financial assistance to SHG. But at the
same time some villagers started talking that “they will
run away with your money”. Some were saying that “if I
was not able to repay the bank loan. The bank in turn
will take away our little belongings”. However the
constant motivation by our facilitator motivated me and
then I motivated other households to form SHG.
I faced lot of difficulties in opening the bank account. I
had never visited bank earlier. The filling of forms and
understanding the procedure to open bank account was painstaking. My regular bank visits to
do transaction was again cumbersome. Even maintaining the books of SHG was difficult. We
had to call a local book keeper who would charge Rs 50 to Rs 100 in the name of petrol charges.
Gradually, I did understand the importance of my savings. I took loan from SHG savings and
invested in activities which gave us income. Some of my SHG members bought goats. Some
bought a calf out of SHG loan. I opened up a small shop in the village. I earn Rs 50 to Rs 100 daily
from my shop.
I feel that not only I got economic benefit but SHG has contributed in building my confidence. I
can now easily talk to officials. I don't hesitate to speak before males and my husband now listen
to my opinions. He also seeks support from me whenever he is in need of money. This is not the
end for me rather it has just begun for me.
