Sco and Aunna Fadness are relaxed and easy going, ready to talk. Given the last 12 months of their life, that demeanor is a pleasant surprise.

One year ago from September, Sco and Aunna began Sco ’s campaign for mayor in the town where he has worked since 2006, Fishers. “ e last 12 months have been a bit action-packed,” Sco confessed.

“ e choice to run for mayor was Sco ’s and we have just rolled with it,” Aunna agreed. Sco , 32, and Aunna, 31, moved to Fishers

in 2007, a year a er Sco began an internship and commuted from Bloomington. Sco and Aunna inevitably were drawn to call Fishers their home.

e build up to the primary last spring was a crazy time, and exciting in another way. During the busiest part of the race, Aunna discovered she was expecting. e couple withheld this bit of news from the public until a er the primary. To top it o , their due date is mid-November, just a er the main election.

Sco Fadness is a bit of a reluctant politician. Since 2006, he has held several di erent job titles within the town, learning as much as he can about each department along the way.

“If Aunna goes into labor on election day,

I’ll be with her of course. ey are forever, the

o ce isn’t.”

“I love the job of town manager.

is is where my passion is....I

ultimately decided to run for o ce

so that I wouldn’t leave the team

that I have loved being a part of.”

Growing up on a farm in North Dakota in a town with a population of 2,200, Sco ’s parents, Deb and Bruce Fadness, were surprised that he adapted so well to bigger city living. ey were not surprised, however, by Sco ’s soon to be new title of mayor. Working out in the elds with his dad and grandfather, Sco learned every aspect of their farm through hands-on experience. ey know this is where Sco gleaned his work ethic.

Frequently on ride-alongs with Fishers police o cers, or helping plow the streets in the middle of the night, Sco continues to spend time with all departments. “I love the job of town manager. is is where my passion is. When the people voted to approve Fishers becoming a city in 2011, I had not realized that it meant I would lose my job,” Fadness said. “I ultimately decided to run for o ce so that I wouldn’t leave the team that I have loved being a part of.”

Fadness earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of North Dakota. “I thought I would be a third generation farmer,” he said. Apparently he was guided down a di erent path. He knew he wanted to get a master’s degree in public a airs from Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental A airs which is at the top of the list of schools, next to Harvard.

When Fadness’ parents ew down to see him in Bloomington, he drove them around to let them get a feel for the city. “When you drive in downtown Bloomington and surrounding areas, you get an immediate feel for what Bloomington is all about. at is the feel I want to create in Fishers,” said Sco of his vision for the newly found city.

e move to Indiana would prove prophetic for not only his career path, but most importantly this is where he met Aunna. Aunna is from a small, unincorporated area in northwestern Indiana called Union Mills, which has a population of 2,212. She graduated from South Central High School, located in southern La Porte County. A er receiving a bachelor’s degree from Purdue, she earned a master’s degree in Environmental A airs at Indiana University, as well. She works for an environmental engineering company.

Both Sco and Aunna share a passion for giving back. Sco is on the Board for the Hamilton County Humane Society. ey volunteer with the American Red Cross and for Alternatives, the women’s shelter in Anderson. ey are also on the commi ee to fund a shelter in Hamilton County. Both are young, dynamic and easy-going, which are all needed characteristics for the job at hand.

Fishers has witnessed more than its fair share of growth and change in the last 25 years. Interestingly enough, a farm boy from North Dakota is leading us through the bulk of this shi . Given Sco and Aunna’s background and adaptability for change, their small town, country upbringing has perfectly

prepared this couple for what lies ahead.

Sco is in the right place at the right time. But what if the baby decides the right time to arrive is on Election Day?

“ at is easy. I am with my wife and son. ey are forever, the o ce isn’t,” says Sco .

He has his priorities straight.

I ndy Premier comprises of the combination of three travel programs: the Noblesville Soccer Club, the Fishers Soccer Club and the Indianapolis Premier Soccer Club.

“We merged to combine the best training experience for our players,” General Manager Jamie Wood said.

is merger also opened the doors for players outside the Fishers and Noblesville areas to tryout for their teams. “We have expanded our programming and opened up the opportunity to allow players from surrounding communities to play at the various levels within our club,” Wood said.

Wood, who had been the director of coaching for the Fishers Soccer Club for the past ve years before stepping into the general

manager role, has seen the travel programs double in participation. Under Indy Premier, the number of travel participants has grown exponentially. “We credit our professional coaching sta and the positive experience that they give to the players,” says Wood.

Wood grew up in central England and played professionally for Oldham Athletic. He played for the English Premier League club for three years before being sidelined with a spinal injury.

“Today’s medicine would have probably seen me miss a season, but then it was career-ending,” Wood said. But soccer is his life, so he began coaching. “I worked to stay close to the game that I love,” he said.

Indy Premier has the largest and highest licensed full-time coaching sta in the state that are dedicated to developing young players. “We have worked hard to

improve our quality of coaching and level of competition,” states Wood.

Almost all of the coaching sta played soccer at the collegiate level, several having professional experience like Wood. All of the coaching sta is commi ed to the players, with a couple notable additions that are still players themselves. Indy Premier has recently added two new coaches from the Indy Eleven, forward Mike Ambersley and goalkeeper Kristian Nicht.

Ambersley, celebrating his homecoming to Indiana, scored the rst goal of the club’s inaugural season. As a standout at IU who won two national titles, he feels very much at home. “Playing at IU had a big in uence on my decision to sign with Indy Eleven. I have always considered Indiana my second home and my wife, Lauren and I are really enjoying our time here as a family,” says Ambersley.

Scoring the rst goal for the Indy Eleven came just a day a er Ambersley’s wife and newborn son were released from the hospital. “George was born on that Tuesday leading up to the game so needless to say I did not have much sleep going into that game. It was the best distraction I have ever had! When my career is over and George is old enough to understand what I did, I can look back on that night with him and tell him that goal was for him,” Ambersley said.

Goalkeeper Kristian Nicht began his professional career playing in the Bundesliga, a top- ight league in Germany. Nicht was the rst player signed for the Indy Eleven squad, creating a strong defensive foundation. Nicht has been thrilled with the fan support. “ e excitement for a whole new team is extraordinary here,” Nicht said. “I really like living in Indiana, it

is a very relaxed place with a very nice downtown and outskirts.” And most importantly, home to a throng of soccer fans.

Both Ambersley and Nicht enjoy giving back to the game of soccer. Becoming trainers with Indy Premier was a natural t for both professional athletes. “I have learned so much during my time at IU and playing professionally for nine years. I want to share my knowledge of the game with the youth and what be er way than to coach young kids who are willing to learn,” Ambersley said.

Nicht shared the sentiment, “I had some very good mentors in my youth career and now I feel it is my calling to be that mentor to young goalkeepers.”

When you “THINK SNOW!” you should conjure up images of the Indianapolis Ski Club.

While Indianapolis may not be synonymous with snow skiing, there is a group of nearly 300 snow enthusiasts who are members of the Indianapolis ski club.

e club has been in existence for almost 60 years and still promotes friendships and great ski trips!

Club President Lisa Sindelar said that is exactly what the club is all about—making friends and skiing great mountains. “ e bonus is the hassle free travel that comes with being a club member,” Sindelar said.

Sindelar said trips are planned with almost everything included, from li tickets to transportation to lodging.

“It’s just a great way to enjoy a ski trip,” Sinedelar said.

Lisa joined the club in 2002 a er talking to a club member in the winter sports section of Galyans.

“I didn’t know there was a ski club in Indy,” Sinedelar said. “I went home, looked up the website, a ended a social event and joined!”

Lisa has since married a club member and has enjoyed several trips with the club.

Fellow skier and Lawrence resident Joan Na ziger has been a member of the club since 1992 and has been a volunteer “go-to” person on several trips.

“It’s so much fun traveling with a group of fellow skiers and friends.” Na ziger said, “It makes it much more bearable when you get stuck in a blizzard in Minneapolis, too!”

is year the Indianapolis Ski Club has six trips planned for the upcoming season in the western United States and Europe.

In January, they kick o their line up of trips at Ban in Alberta, Canada.

Trips to SteamBoat, Winter Park and Beaver Creek in Colorado are scheduled in February. Also a European trip is planned to Cortina, Italy, and Madonna di Campiglio, a popular ski resort in Northeast Italy, scheduled for March 2015.

e group’s nal trip of the season o ered is Big Sky Montana—a favorite by many—in March.

e US trips start at a li le more than $1,300 per member – more for European trips. Trips are for members only, but it’s easy to join and the club always welcomes new members!

Writer / Neil Lucas

Dr. Steven Levine is pleased to announce Midwest Pain & Spine has added Dr. Kent B. Remley to its team of physicians dedicated to providing the highest quality non-invasive diagnosis and treatments for chronic back and spine pain su erers. Dr. Remley joins Levine and Dr. William Hall at Midwest Pain & Spine.

Dr. Remley, a graduate of IU School of Medicine, is an Interventional Neuroradiologist specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery as well as diagnostic and therapeutic injection procedures of the head, neck and spine.

Prior to practicing in Atlanta and Indianapolis he served as an assistant professor of Radiology and

Otolaryngology and director of ENT/Head and Neck Imaging at the University Of Minnesota and was a clinical instructor in Neuroradiology at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Remley’s area of special expertise and research focuses on the treatment of osteoporotic spinal fractures utilizing minimally invasive surgical techniques. is means that Dr. Remley is specially trained to treat fractures caused by osteoporosis, a disease in which the bones become extremely porous and are thereby subject to fracture, and heal slowly. As many of you may know, this occurs especially in women following menopause, but can also arise with men.

In addition, Dr. Remley is a well-published writer and lectures nationally in the elds of minimally invasive spine surgery and interventional neuroradiology. He serves on the scienti c advisory board for Benvenue and is a consultant for Joimax

Planning your holiday party? When you host an event, you’re presenting yourself, your family or your company to others, so it’s important that your name be represented well. With venues throughout greater

central Indiana, we can be anywhere you need us to be. From 30 people to 3000… simple or exquisite… disposables or fine china… finger foods or fancy dishes... whatever you choose, we’ll serve it up with a

helping of hospitality that will make you glad you chose Jonathan Byrd’s for your special occasion.

Ten years ago, Sue Zilisch peered out of her Broad Ripple

home and thought, “This neighborhood is ripe for a home tour, one that celebrates the history of the community through the stories of its houses.”

So—Sue and a small army of friends “accosted” home owners and scheduled the first “Bungalows of Broad Ripple” tour. As researchers conducted interviews and delved into abstracts of titles, city directories and genealogical sites to bring out the stories that were hidden within the walls of the tour homes, the name soon morphed into the Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour.

This year’s celebratory event (Saturday, September 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.) features a home that appeared on the first tour—its claim to fame being that it was a Sears “kit home.” For many years, the Sears Roebuck Company offered floor plans and building materials to prospective home owners. Building components—from lumber to nails—were numbered and shipped to the customer, who either hired a contractor or took on the task himself.

Another feature of this year’s tour is the recently opened Broad Ripple Hotel. A late 1880s brick house and an early 20th century bungalow have been tied together to form a charming boutique hotel.

There are many inspiring groups in the fight against breast cancer, but one local group is focusing on breast cancer survivors and their road to recovery.

The group called Casting for Recovery gathered at Moon Dog Tavern this summer to raise money to send breast cancer survivors on fly fishing retreats.

So what does fly fishing have to do with breast cancer recovery?

Well, apparently, it has a lot to do with “casting a line.”

The group was founded in 1996 by an East Coast breast cancer reconstructive surgeon named Dr. Benita Walton and Gwenn Perkins, a professional fly fisherwoman. Walton saw that casting a line was a motion that mimics the exercises surgeons prescribe after surgery or radiation to promote soft tissue stretching.

“Its just a great program,” said Carmel resident Mary Smith, who learned of the group while she was fly fishing in Michigan.

“I met these women who were having so much fun—they were away from hospitals and enjoying the outdoors,” Smith laughed. “I went home and told my husband we need this in Indiana.”

Smith, who is not a breast cancer survivor started the local chapter with friend Barb Simpson and organized its first retreat in 2004. They said they have enjoyed the ripple effect ever since.

Geist resident Deb Hire is a breast cancer survivor who enjoyed a retreat in 2006. “I wish every woman in Indiana could experience the retreats,” Hire said.

Sponsors are catching on and coming on board including Midwest Sisters on the Fly,

Clay Terrace of Carmel, IU Health North, Reel Women – Reel Men of Indy and Moon Dog Tavern. Moon Dog Tavern is also where the summer fundraiser that took in approximately $400, enough to send four more on a retreat next year.

Applicants are chosen through a lottery system and sent to the Wooded Glen and Conference Center located in Henryville, Ind., where lakes are stocked with bass, catfish and bluegill for catch and release fishing.

“The women are usually meeting for the

first time, and sometimes they are a little shy about fishing,” Smith said. “But, by the end, typically, they are catching fish and making new friends. I like to say the women come to the retreat as rosebuds and leave in full bloom!”

Casting for Recovery will celebrate its 200 alumni member group with a reunion on Sept. 27 at the Lake Haven Campground in Indianapolis.

As a former seventh grade special education teacher, Leah Desserich put her students first. That meant she always adjusted her teaching style to each student’s special needs or concerns.

This training has served her well as a Pilates instructor because each client deserves personalized care and everyone starts at different fitness levels. The former gymnast never envisioned herself as an owner of a Pilates studio and yet everything about her previous training helped make Just Breathe Pilates a successful business even before she opened the studio door in July 2014.

As Desserich looked for a way to stay fit, she stumbled upon a class at the Fishers Y that introduced her to Pilates. Soon, Desserich was completing her certification and training clients in her home.

Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, Pilates has literally saved Desserich. This is why she committed herself to continue teaching; it makes a difference in her own health.

But what is also evident is the love she has for every one of her students.

“My clients were used to sitting on my couch, chatting with each other before and after class. I didn’t want to take that feel of my business away,” Desserich said.

The personal attention she pays her clients has paid off in many ways. “Many of my clients did not know each other before working out with me and now are dear friends,” she added.

Evidenced as her clients arrive, leave or simply stop by to say, “hello,” Just Breathe Pilates offers an atmosphere where you are likely to feel at home. Many of her clients have been with her from the beginning nine years ago.

While Pilates is the main attraction, the studio offers YoPi, TRX and yoga. In addition to online scheduling, the studio offers a “scheduling app” that allows you to schedule from the convenience of your smart phone.Desserich offers a two-week unlimited trial for $30 for first time students.

In addition to new instructors, the studio now offers massage therapy from licensed massage therapist and Fishers resident, Laura Graham. Graham was introduced to massage therapy in Hawaii by a Japanese holistic healer who encouraged her to continue training in massage therapy. Now certified in Swedish massage, reflexology and esthetics, Graham is offering new clients a 60-minute massage special for $45 in September and October.

Stop by the studio at 11446 Olio Rd. next to El Rodeo or visit them online at justbreathepilates.com.

On a warm Friday afternoon in June, Town of Fishers officials were touring one of the fastest growing brewing companies in the country with its owners and founders: Sun King Brewing Company. Two months later, they announce an $8.8 million expansion deal that will bring jobs, visitors and the cool factor to Fishers.

“We met with several municipalities in the process, including Carmel and Indianapolis,” said Steve Koers, VP of Sun King Brewing. “We were looking for a big piece of land, 13-15 acres in size where we could build a purpose-built building unlike the retrofit facility we have downtown.”

From the initial meeting, Fishers officials knew they were in contention for the business, a possibility that seemed impossible when most of Fishers was only blueprints and drawings four years ago.

“It was a fit for what we’re trying to create here in Fishers,” said Tom Dickey, Community Development Director for the Town of Fishers. “We tried to make that clear from the first meeting, and I think that resonated with them.”

Led by the Town Manager and future

Mayor of Fishers Scott Fadness, Fishers pulled together a team comprised of Dickey, Fire Chief Steve Orusa, Acting Police Chief Mitch Thompson, Director of Parks and Recreation Tony Elliot and Communications Director Autum Gasior for the Sun King visit.

“Our meeting was scheduled for 30 minutes, and it ended up going for 3 hours,” recalls Koers.

Dickey and company gave Sun King representatives a golf cart tour of the Nickel Plate district, going down a trail that led to the 106th St. corridor. Talking about the upcoming 106th Street interchange off of I-69 in 2016-2017 and the Nickel Plate bike trails, Sun King representatives saw the vision and bought in.

“It came down to how much Fishers wanted us,” Koers said. “When you see the amount of love and respect the town had for us, it was really a no-brainer.”

The new 40,000-square-foot Sun King is ready to be built on the southeast corner of Kincaid Drive and Park Central Drive. The 13-acre plot also gives Sun King the intriguing possibility to grow its own hops and take its business to a “farm-to-beer” model.

“This isn’t the biggest deal we’ve brought to the town,” said Dickey, “but it does fit our vision to be a vibrant, entrepreneurial community.”

As for winning the winning formula for Fishers, Dickey attributes the economic development strategy and recent downtown developments as key selling points.

“It’s hard to make a pitch based on drawings. People want to see proof that things are happening. Having been involved in several deals, both in the private and now public sector, I’d much rather be in the position we are now and be able to show people things are happening.”

Ground breaking should occur in late October or early November of this year. Koers hopes to have the new facility open by the 6-year anniversary of Sun King Brewing Company, July 1, 2015.

Writer / Kara Reibel

Enjoying the newly renovated Mama Bear’s, Indianapolis resident and author John David Anderson indulged me by sitting down for coffee and conversation. Recently celebrating the release of his third novel, Minion, a companion to Sidekicked (his second novel), Anderson discusses his inspiration and focus.

KR: What is your earliest memory of writing?JDA: I remember making my own comic books as a kid. All stick figures—I’m a terrible artist—but full of explosions and aliens and tanks and the stuff of a 7-year-old boy’s imagination. Light on plot, but heavy on action. I have always been a storyteller, but I didn’t find joy in writing until high school, which is about the time I could start to appreciate other writers for their style and for their artistry, rather than just the story they told.

KR: Has writing always been a passion of yours?JDA: I’m passionate about stories. I’m passionate about characters and their evolutions and their conflicts and their relationships. I’m passionate about the power of narrative to shape and give meaning to our lives and beliefs. But I always worry that I’m putting the puzzle together incorrectly and that my words won’t do justice to the story in my head. The actual act of sitting down and writing is both torture and bliss.

KR: You and your wife have 9-year-old twins. Do you make up bedtime stories for your kids off the cuff?JDA: I used to. Now we make them up together. Their imaginations are equal, if not superior, to mine, so they bear some responsibility.

We sometimes make up stories, each of us contributing one sentence or word at a time. They’re usually awful, and, always bizarre, but there is value in the shared act of creation that I treasure. It’s gratifying to watch them become storytellers in their own right.

KR: Your writing is geared toward middle school children. Have your kids read your books? What do they think of them? Do they present ideas to you? In what ways do they inspire you?JDA: My son reads everything I write and constantly reaffirms that I am his favorite author, which is very sweet. My daughter is more leveled in her appraisal; she loves them, but they aren’t her absolute favorites (note: her favorite changes weekly). They don’t give me ideas explicitly, though I am always mining their behaviors, comments, reactions, etc., for inspiration. I think it’s important for me to write books that my own kids would enjoy and take something away from. I want them to be proud of me. Or at least not embarrassed by me. (Good luck, kids!)

KR: Do you take frequent notes throughout the course of a normal day as the ideas come to you? What portion of your week or of a day do you spend writing? And is your work done at a computer or do you prefer a tablet?JDA: I am not a note-taker, a journaler or a planner. I write organically, one idea naturally budding off of the next (and often getting trimmed later), so most of my ideas surface during the process. Only when I get stumped, which happens fairly often, do I need to step away and brainstorm, and then I might jot something down. I spend a good chunk of my day writing, so that provides plenty of hours for the ideas to germinate. All of my writing is done at my desktop looking out over my back yard so I can get distracted by the birds and remind myself that it is time to mow the lawn.

KR: You grew up on the north side and attended North Central High School. Have you been back to those halls or the schools you attended in elementary or junior high to speak?JDA: I have been back to Nora Elementary, though I was a student there 30 years ago, so I didn’t run into any former teachers. It’s fascinating to look at the students and think that one of them could be back there, in that same classroom, 30 years from now, talking about their work, their passions, their life experience and maybe one of those in their audience could be my grandchild. Who knows? Hopefully I will still be churning out books when that time comes.

John David Anderson lives with his wife and twins in the Geist/Lawrence area. Dave’s wife, Alithea, teaches at IPS and the twins do their best to keep their parents as busy as possible. Dave enjoys speaking to middle school and upper-grade elementary students, and from the rave reviews, he is apparently quite good at it. If you would like to contact him to set up an author visit, you can visit his website at johndavidanderson.com or email him at [email protected].

His novels, Standard Hero Behavior, Sidekicked and Minion, are available online at amazon.com and at local bookstores Kids Ink and Indy Reads.

He knew. When Darrin Kirkland, Sr. watched his son play varsity football as a sophomore, he knew the 15-year-old would likely have an opportunity to play at the next level. “When he came in the game, he made an instant impact,” remembers Darrin, Sr. It was a hunch that’s paying off—big time.

While a student-athlete at Park Tudor School, Darrin’s physique began to fill out and his athleticism jumped off the chart. Desiring a more competitive opportunity, Darrin enrolled in Lawrence Central High School. Now, at age 17, he’s a strapping 6 ft., 2 in., 230-pound, gifted athlete. “He’s one of the best linebackers I’ve seen in high school since I’ve been around,” offers Jed Richman, LC’s head football coach. Kirkland also is no slacker in the classroom, which made him a prime target for top-flight Division 1 college football programs.

During his junior year, 31 schools recruited Darrin including Ohio State, Louisville,

Ole Miss, Texas, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Notre Dame. “Darrin has always been a strong student, so it was important for us first to investigate what these schools were most noted for. That was at the top of our list,” says his mom, Stephanie. In the end, the University of Michigan was the choice. In December, Darrin graduates and will enroll in college—ready to take on the biggest athletic and academic challenge of his young life: studying finance and business law, and playing Big 10 football for the Wolverines. “It was important to me to find the best place for me—academically as well as athletically,” says Darrin Jr. “Someplace where I would grow as a man and a great football player. They offered me a plan.” “I’m just very proud of him,” says his smiling father. “He’s done everything in and out of classroom, on the football field, around the house. He’s just a humble kid.”

Darrin is arguably the best player in

Indianapolis, and may well be a candidate for Indiana Mr. Football. His team plays in the hyper-competitive Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference (MIC). When you face Ben Davis, Carmel, Center Grove, Warren Central, North Central, Lawrence North and Pike every week, it’s a meat-grinder of a schedule. “There’s no comparison in this state to it,” explains Greg Rakestraw, sports talk radio host and play-by-play voice of HomeTown Sports and News, which will carry nine MIC games this fall on WRTV’s cable channel. “MaxPreps ranks the MIC as the ninth-toughest high school conference in the country.”

High school football is enormously competitive and popular, particularly in Marion County and Lawrence Township. While Lawrence North has struggled in recent years Rakestraw predicts a different LC-LN game this season (September 5). “My expectation is that LC should win, but this year it should be a lot more competitive.”

Richman agrees about the township’s pigskin prowess (especially when Cathedral is added to the mix.) “I think it’s an exciting time to play football in Indiana, Indianapolis and especially Lawrence Township.”

Kirkland, who wears jersey number 34 and plays middle linebacker, is a big reason for LC’s recent success. “He’s big, he’s strong, he’s fast,” Richman says. Darrin’s 40-yard dash time is 4.58—very quick for a young man his size. He’s consistently ranked in the top ten nationally at his position. “He’s the kind of kid you never have to take off the field. He’s a football player. Period.” For that and other, more important reasons, Richman says he’s not surprised Michigan came calling. “He’s an easy kid to coach. He’s a hard worker and makes everyone around him better. He’s always trying to bring his teammates up and lead the program in intangible ways.” As an example, Darrin helped coordinate a visit to Gleaner’s Food Bank last winter where LC football players

packed food for holiday distribution.

Richman says it was impressive how Darrin handled the attention from big-time colleges, and the continuing spotlight that comes with being a Michigan recruit. For that, he credits Darrin’s parents. “Nothing goes to his head. Obviously they’ve installed great values in him,” says Richman. “When the recruitment got really heavy, he still had a lot of high school to stay focused on,” says Darrin’s mom. “I still wanted him to be a kid.” And apparently Darrin’s teammates understand the media spotlight. “Nobody’s perfect, but he’s done a nice job handling all the pressures that come with being a high recruit,” says his coach.

Kirkland has racked up impressive awards over the course of his athletic career including MVP honors at several national football camps. This January, he’ll participate in the U.S. Army All-American Game in San Antonio with 90 of the nation’s best

high school football players. “I’m ready for the next chapter,” offers Darrin. “A little nervous—just for starting college, not for the football part. I’ll get comfortable with it after the first few weeks.”

Unsurprisingly, Kirkland dreams about the NFL (observers say he has the skill set.) “If it happens, it happens,” Darrin understands. “I just want to be the best football player I can be, and if that end’s up in the NFL, that would be great.” But first, there’s plenty of work to do. After all, he hasn’t even stepped foot onto the college gridiron. Stephanie, however, notes that her son has always had big dreams. And, why not?

The crowds of guests arrive adorned in everything from beach bum chic, disco dancing wear, pirate duds, western/cowboy costumes and even Mardi Gras costumes. It seems like a giant Halloween party for grown-ups. But this party trumps Halloween! It’s time for Saint Simon’s 15th Annual Royal Extravaganza. The date is set for Saturday, October 18 at the parish.

The Royal Extravaganza is held each fall and is one of Saint Simon’s largest fundraising events; the other is Saint Simon Festival in June. The extravaganza usually draws between 400 and 500 guests, and this year promises to be no exception.

For the 15th annual event, the event co-chairs, Jennifer Keller and Mary Williams, wanted to plan a special, unforgettable evening, one like they’ve never had before. The theme for the 2014 Royal Extravaganza is “The Royal Ball.” “In the past we almost always did costume type themes, which is always fun. But this year we want it to be special and different,” Keller said. “We’ve never done this before. This time, formal and black tie are strongly encouraged,” she added.

Special is exactly what the committee is delivering. The extravaganza kicks off with a silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by dinner served at 8 p.m. The open-bar is available from 6 to 11:30 p.m. The silent auction closes at 8:30 p.m., and the live auction begins at 9:00 p.m. Guests can enjoy the tunes of one of Indy’s favorite pop, rock, bluegrass, R&B cover bands, “My Yellow Rickshaw,” beginning at 9 p.m. “We’re very excited to announce that this year, for the first time ever, we will be having a Bling Ring Raffle sponsored by Distinctive Diamonds,” Keller said.

Keller says there is so much to plan for an event of this magnitude, “We give ourselves almost a full year to plan the Extravaganza.” The Royal X committee is made up of more than 20 parishioners who work throughout the year securing donations and sponsors, as well as working with vendors and coordinating a large number of volunteers to help during the week of the event setting up and much more. “One thing that can never be questioned is our passion and dedication to this event. We pour 110 percent of ourselves in to making it happen and do not stop until it is done. None of this

is possible without the countless hours that our committee gives to this event. It is always so heartwarming to see people using their talents and strengths for such a good cause,” Keller added.

It’s no wonder the event takes a year to plan. The money raised goes to fund more than 30 ministries within the parish, like Adult Religious Education, Children’s Religious Education, The Lord’s Pantry and St. Vincent de Paul. “We do it for our sister parish in Haiti, to help fund medical missions and to send clothing and other necessities to them. We do it for our own children of Saint Simon School, where a portion of the proceeds from the event help with the many programs that we offer for them. We do it so that we can use the talents that God has given us to help others,” Keller said.

Keller explained she became involved just two years ago. “I have attended many of the past Royal Extravaganzas, and I still remember the first one. My husband and I have been involved, mostly behind the scenes. It wasn’t until 2012 that I decided to officially join the committee. After my first year volunteering, I decided I would like to try my hand at chairing the event. I teamed up with one of the most amazing women I know, Mary Williams, and this is our second year of chairing the event together. There is no one else I would rather do this with,” Keller said.

The event is open to the public, so you may want to get your tickets early. Tickets are available for purchase on the event’s website: saintsimon.org/royal-extravaganza. The cost is $70 per person, and it goes up to $80 per person after Oct. 4. Seniors ages 55 and up can get their tickets for $50 per person, or $60 per person after Oct. 4. If you’re a last minute planner, that’s OK. You can walk in the night of event, and those tickets are $100 per person. One ticket price covers dinner, open bar and entertainment.

In addition to contributing to the school and the community, the extravaganza is a great way to promote your business. You can become a sponsor for the event or place an ad in our event program. Either way, it’s great publicity for your business. Sponsor package details along with reservations, donations and raffle tickets can all be found at saintsimon.org/royal-extravaganza.

See you there!

We love celebrations and anniversaries. So Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 8115 Oaklandon Road in Geist, is providing both opportunities as part of its Silver Anniversary Celebration. 25 years ago, the new church opened its doors to worshipers, and in recent years to elementary and middle schoolers who a end classes on the church campus. “ e public can expect a weekend of family fun—a great time for the community to come together, be outdoors, visit the campus and see what we’re about,” explains Angela Dant. “It’s about celebrating the di erent ministries we have, and inviting people to be a part of it.”

ursday, September 4, celebration activities begin with a concert on the church lawn featuring the Christian band,

Remedy Drive. e music begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. A endees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and coolers. Friday, September 5, has been dubbed Food Truck Friday & Game Night. Beginning at 6 p.m., area food trucks will be in place for an outdoor feast under a large tent erected on the church lawn. Kids can enjoy carnival-style games too. Again, it is open to the public.

A fundraising golf outing is set for Saturday, September 6, at Grey Eagle Golf Club in Fishers. e noon shotgun start is open to the public and requires an entry fee. All proceeds go to technology and athletic needs at the church’s school, Holy Cross Lutheran School, for students age 2 through 8th grade. Sunday, September 6, will bring a combined worship service at 9:30 a.m. under the lawn tent, followed by a picnic for

church members and visitors alike. Many of the church’s charter member will be on hand to hear Pastor John Sa ler who, while not the founding minister, has been pastor at Holy Cross Lutheran for more than 20 years. More details at hclc.info.

[Editor’s note: We are proud to have been given the opportunity to introduce to the community Jonathan Nalli, St.Vincent Health’s new CEO, and his family. Moreover, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to St.Vincent Health and Jonathan and his family for making themselves available for this interview. At the age of 39, Jonathan impressively sits at the helm of this 22-hospital system, one of Indiana’s largest, serving Central and Southern

Indiana. He and his wife, Cathleen, and their young children, Jonathan, Delaney and their latest addition, adopted newborn daughter Hadley, are acclimating to their new home in Zionsville and are eager to become engaged in the local communities that St.Vincent Health proudly serves.]

Jonathan Nalli very recently relocated his family to Zionsville after accepting the position as CEO of St.Vincent Health in February of 2014. Jonathan has accomplished a great deal within the

health care industry, even though he is only 39 years old. St.Vincent Health is a 22-hospital system that serves Central and Southern Indiana. This faith-based healthcare provider specializes in quality care in a number of service areas, including cardiovascular, women’s health, pediatrics, neurosciences, cancer care, bariatrics, orthopedics and trauma.

Jonathan served as the CEO of Porter Health System, a Community Health Systems affiliate in Valparaiso, Indiana, prior

to accepting his current role with St.Vincent Health. The Porter Health System, during Jonathan’s watch as CEO, experienced the construction of a 238-bed replacement regional hospital, generated a net revenue of $310 million, developed a multi-specialty physician group of primary care and surgical providers, and was recognized by the Northwest Indiana Business Quarterly as a Best Place to Work from 2011-2013.

Jonathan, originally from Kentucky, earned his Bachelor of Health Sciences in Health Administration from the University of Kentucky and his MBA from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Jonathan became COO of Chestnut Hill Health System in Philadelphia, and then went on to be the COO of Pottstown Memorial Medical Center in Pottstown, PA. It was in Pennsylvania that he would meet his partner in life and mother to his children, Cathleen. Originally from north central Pennsylvania, Cathleen would leave her family and childhood home and accompany Jonathan on an exciting journey that would lead them to Valparaiso, and now Zionsville.

Jonathan recalled the fateful night he told his fiancée that he had been given an assignment in Indiana. “We were engaged on January 13, 2007, and were in the preparation stages for our wedding in November,” Jonathan said. “I came home from a board meeting one evening and told Cathleen that they wanted me to go oversee a hospital in Indiana for four weeks. She looked at me and asked, ‘What if they offer you the job?’ and I told her they wouldn’t. It [the job] is too big and I’m too young. She turned around in a knowing and flippant manner and as she walked away, said, ‘Just be home in time for the wedding.’”

“On our way to Cathleen’s sister’s wedding that September, she asked me if they had found somebody for my job,” Jonathan said. “I replied, ‘Well, they’ve offered it to me again.’ She asked, ‘what do you mean, again?’” Jonathan reluctantly came clean and admitted at that point that they had twice presented him with an offer for the position of CEO. “Cathleen turned to me and said, ‘You know, we’ll regret this in 10 years if we don’t do it.’ So, it was actually Cathleen who

motivated me to accept the position. It was at that point in time that I recognized the selflessness of this person who was going to be my spouse and what she was willing to sacrifice to make us successful. It is something that I don’t ever forget.”

Jonathan and Cathleen quickly became rooted in their new community. Together they served as co-chairs for the 2011/2012 United Way campaign in Porter County. Jonathan was with Community Health Systems for 15-plus years before accepting his current position with St.Vincent Health. Jonathan’s predecessor, Vincent Caponi, said this about Jonathan: “As a proven healthcare executive with vast experience in growth management strategies, improvement plans and demonstrable results in achieving business objectives, we look forward to Jonathan leading the transformation of our business and building on the successes of our ministry.”

Jonathan spoke about the current status

of the health care industry and his overall vision for St.Vincent Health.

“When you look at health care today, I honestly believe we haven’t seen as turbulent an industry since the discussion surrounding the beginning of Medicare in the mid-’60s,” he explained. “For health care systems to survive, they have to strategize differently. They’ve got to align their resources to be as nimble and proactive as possible. They’ve got to align to achieve the efficiencies necessary to bring about a great health care outcome. We have made the decision to focus on our second phase. The first phase was under Vince Caponi, a phenomenal man whose career and tenure was spent growing the ministry from 2 to 22 hospitals. Now the second phase of the strategy is focused on how we will align those 22. You hear a lot within and outside of St.Vincent this idea of ‘One St.Vincent.’ We are a statewide system, a statewide ministry aligning all of our resources appropriately.

Geist_September_2014.indd 51 8/26/14 11:15 AM

“I believe you have to work hard for what you do and you support and love each other. If you do those two things, everything else will fall into place and that’s the biggest thing for us. No matter what is happening in our lives, as long as we are together, we can be anywhere.”

We base that on what we call QEP (quality, experience and performance), and those service outcomes related to it. We put together the latest evidence of how we should be practicing medicine, align those in every ministry and cascade where they need to be.”

Jonathan identi es the discipline and structure he learned while employed by Community Health Systems as the key assets he brings to St.Vincent Health. “If you look at the roots of St.Vincent, we are greater than 133 years old. Our roots are based on care for the poor, vulnerable and marginalized. We do that through “One St.Vincent,” which is a statewide network, and we do that through clinical integration. ese together allow us to weather this turbulent market we’re in as a health care industry, and not just survive but actually move toward strong viability and nimbleness.”

While understandably proud of her husband, Cathleen weighed in as the spouse of a young and successful CEO and the growth she has witnessed in Jonathan.

“ e transformation I’ve seen from a personal side, watching him grow into this leader, is simply amazing,” she said. “He is so young, which is a blessing and a curse because he is so young to be doing what he’s doing. I don’t think people realize what his position entails. It is a huge undertaking, especially because of where we are in our personal lives with two small children, an adoption, a move and a new house. It’s been a lot. It’s been like this since I met him; it’s a roller coaster but it’s been a great ride.”

When they rst met, Jonathan sent an email in which he discussed himself and what he did for a profession. Cathleen, a former schoolteacher, thought he was a hospital cook a er his sentence was missing critical punctuation. He wrote that he was a coo for a hospital instead of COO. Cathleen laughingly admi ed to her mistaken assumption. “I did, and I thought if that man can cook for a hospital, he can cook for me!”

Cathleen is passionate about volunteering and being hands-on in the community.

She has served in the Tri Kappa Sorority chapter in Valparaiso as well as in the United Way. She looks forward to joining local organizations and ge ing involved with the local community.

When asked what the secret to having a successful family life is and balancing one spouse’s high-level executive role with the role of parent and spouse, she replied thoughtfully, “I believe you have to work hard for what you do and you support and love each other. If you do those two things, everything else will fall into place and that’s the biggest thing for us. No ma er what is happening in our lives, as long as we are together, we can be anywhere. We love this area and it has so much opportunity for us and for our family, but it wouldn’t have to be this wonderful for us to be happy. Together, as a family, we would make it wonderful anywhere.”

Jonathan concludes his sentiments on his family’s new position and roles in the communities they serve. “We want to be advocates of good health outcomes and good health statuses and would love to be

viewed in that light. We want to contribute to our communities. We engage in a community for a lot of reasons and want to continue to engage Boone and Hamilton counties in hopes that we can continue to increase and expand the health status of the communities.”

Q & A WITH JONATHAN & CATHLEEN NALLIWHERE ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO GO WITH CATHLEEN AND YOUR FAMILY?“Prior to moving to Zionsville, we lived at City Center in Carmel. e City Center was the center of our universe for two months and allowed us to get out of our apartment with our crazies [kids] and it was wonderful. In Zionsville, we have become fond of the local restaurants like Patrick’s Kitchen and Noah Grant’s. We enjoy going to Lions Park and Scoop’s. e rst place we went in Zionsville that we fell in love with was the Dairy Queen. We went for Dilly Bars at 8:45 p.m. and that was a blast.”

ARE YOU A SPORTS FAN AND WHAT TEAMS DO YOU ROOT FOR?“Obviously, I’m a fan of the Kentucky Wildcats. We are big Pacers and Colts fans, although we have a warm spot for the Denver Broncos.”

Clearly not a random a liation with the Broncos, it leads to the question of how involved is Peyton Manning with the St.Vincent Children’s Hospital since his move to Colorado?

“Peyton remains connected to our children’s hospital to this day. e work he does when he’s back in town and his dedication to call patients every week is remarkable. With that we are loyal Bronco fans. When you think about a namesake to a children’s hospital, for all of the deep-rooted reasons, that man’s it.”

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE THIS CAREER?“Having a ended school before the Internet, we had a ‘career box’ in high school. In my 10th grade English class, I selected hospital administrator and it

all started from there. I have a cousin who is one of the administrators of the omas Je erson University Hospital in Philadelphia, and though he was not the inspiration behind my career choice, he was the element that stoked the re and my exposure to what it was and what it meant to be in the industry.”

HOW DOES INDIANA’S OVERALL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM COMPARE TO OTHER STATES?“We have a ways to go. It’s tough to really say there is a state that is phenomenal in

health care. We all have our own different challenges. I look at how progressive Indiana is in terms of that market sector and I think of Indiana as a progressive state in terms of thought processes. For example, with what we’re seeing with HIP 2.0 (Healthy Indiana Plan), this is going to

allow the state of Indiana to flourish. With the expansion of HIP, and to use that as our Medicaid expansion product, the health system has all rallied behind it, as they see this as an incredible opportunity.”

WHAT MAKES ST.VINCENT HEALTH DIFFERENT FROM OTHER NETWORKS?“We have such a connection with the Daughters of Charity and while everyone within the organization respects each other’s faith base, it is the founding faith-based element that is out in front of what our roots are. This faith-based element is, literally, the basis behind everything. Our culture is our mission. Our mission is to care for the poor, the vulnerable and marginalized.”

CATHLEEN, WHAT DOES JONATHAN LIKE TO DO WHEN HE’S HOME WITH YOUR FAMILY? “We just want to be together and relax because we don’t get to do that very much. We love sitting down and reading stories together. He loves to take the kids shopping at the grocery store and to their soccer games. He loves to spend one-on-one time with our son and also with our daughters. That time is special to him.”

helping of hospitality that will make you glad you chose Jonathan Byrd’s for your special occasion.

Contributed by Department of Natural Resources Staff

Steve Cooke of Noblesville is one of countless Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience success stories.

The sixth annual event, sponsored by Central Indiana Ford Dealers, is Sept. 20 and 21 at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Admission is free, as are parking and all activities.

Cooke attended the first event in 2009 with the goal of learning about fly-fishing. He took a brief lesson and was hooked. He followed up with professional lessons from Patti Beasley of Reel Women-Reel Men fly club in Indianapolis. He now fishes the White River in Central Indiana for panfish and Brookville Lake’s tailwaters on the Whitewater River in southeastern Indiana for trout.

“Fly-fishing is my outlet,” Cooke said. “I like the serenity of being in nature.”

Organized by the Department of Natural Resources and Indiana Natural Resources Foundation, this is Indiana’s largest hands-on outdoor recreation event. Last year a record 32,000 people participated. The idea is to get more Hoosiers interested in outdoor recreation.

The concept came about because nationwide participation rates in many traditional outdoor sports have been declining. In Indiana, the number of licensed hunters and anglers has remained relatively stable over the past few decades. This sounds comforting, said Bourke Patton, director of the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation, until you consider that the number hasn’t kept pace with the state’s overall population growth.

Conservationists worry that if the trend isn’t reversed, fewer Americans will care about protecting natural resources. “The whole point is to get people to embrace the outdoors,” Patton said. “It’s about taking people who have little outdoor knowledge, or even no outdoor knowledge, and showing them what’s available and how to do it.”

Although fly-fishing is not part of this year’s event, about 50 other outdoor activities will be offered by some 120 grassroots organizations. All activities take place in the 1,700-acre state park. Activities available will range from archery to mountain biking and more.

Trolleys from the State Fair roll through the grounds, and activities are clustered to make each stop action-packed.

Information on trolley routes, a listing of all events and directions to parking areas can be found at HoosierOutdoorExperience.IN.gov. While it’s not required, visitors are encouraged to register at the website before they attend. This helps in planning the event.

The programming is essentially the same both days. Participants are welcome to come either or both days.

Horseback riding is one of the most popular activities at the Experience, but space is limited. To register for ride times, visit the saddle barn during the event on the day you wish to ride. There will be both a morning and an afternoon sign-up period. The reservation window will open at 10 a.m. to fill the available morning slots and then again at 1:15 p.m. to fill the afternoon slots.

Visitors should expect lines.

Cooke plans to attend the 2014 Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience with his daughters, ages 9 and 5, to see what other outdoor sports are out there. “It’s always on my calendar,” he said.

Make sure it’s on yours, too.

You are invited to the 3rd Annual Project Pink Fashion Show, which is runway-ready. is fundraiser for Susan G. Komen® Central Indiana is ursday, Sept. 18.

is year, the show is moving to a new venue—City Market in downtown Indy. Doors open at 6 p.m. with appetizers, desserts and cash bar at Tomlinson Tap Room with access to shopping.

A limited number of VIP tickets are available for purchase. VIP tickets allow guests to a end an exclusive meet-and-greet cocktail hour and more. Go to komenindy.org/project-pink to purchase tickets and see details.

e fashion show begins at 7:30 p.m., and features newly created apparel made from repurposed Race for the Cure® T-shirts. Each unique piece has been designed by students from e Art Institute of Indianapolis.

e T-shirts aren’t the only regenerated materials. is year, commi ee members have constructed distinctive decorations from posters, adding a more creative air to this upscale experience.

e models are local survivors, co-survivors and celebrities such as Pippa Mann, who ran a pink car in the Indianapolis 500 this year to partner with Komen to help raise money and awareness.

“Since we do not have a budget for Project Pink, we rely on in-kind donations to make this event happen,” said Sarah Schmitz, Operations Manager of Susan G. Komen

Central Indiana. “ is allows us to put all our funds raised toward our mission to end breast cancer. Of donations received, 75 percent of net proceeds stay in Central Indiana to fund lifesaving breast screenings, treatment assistance and survivor support to underinsured and uninsured Hoosiers; while 25 percent of net proceeds are invested in international research seeking causes, improved treatments and cures for breast cancer.”

ere will be a new panel of judges this year that will select the winning design including long snapper Ma Overton from the Indianapolis Colts and Helen Wells of the Helen Wells Agency. Also models will have a chance to win a popular vote by soliciting $1 donations from friends and family members in the audience.

“We changed our venue this year in hopes to grow this event,” Schmitz said. “We wanted to expand the appeal to a broader audience. We’re excited to have City Market, an exceptional se ing with a modern, chic, urban feel that captures a new look for Project Pink.”

Live entertainment will be provided by DJ Gabby Love with Crush Entertainment. e emcee will be Tom Bri , founder and publisher of Geist and Fishers Community Newsle ers.

Project Pink has raised more than $20,000 for Komen Central Indiana in the past two years and has touched the lives of many local breast cancer survivors. In July, Komen held an open call for survivors interested in modeling for Project Pink. ey submi ed stories and reasons why they wanted to walk on the runway.

One survivor, Jennifer Spees, expressed her interests and passion for the event.

“I will celebrate ve months cancer free on Aug. 19,” Spees said. “I was 44 when diagnosed, in the best shape of my life, as I was training for my rst marathon. I had no history of breast cancer, and my genetic testing was negative. I have two daughters who now know a great deal about breast cancer and are advocates for a cure. ey were two of my biggest cheerleaders throughout chemo, surgery and radiation. Having cancer, I knew I had to show them that you can do anything and be strong doing it! I would love to teach the girls another life lesson, that no ma er how tall or how

much hair you have, you can be a model and be proud of yourself. I would like to be considered for the Project Pink Fashion show to send a message to my girls and the world you can do anything. Never give up.”

“It is stories like this one that encourage and inspire us to make Project Pink bigger and be er every year,” Schmitz said.

If the board of directors for the Mud Creek Players placed a want ad in an Indiana newspaper, it could easily ra le o a few major needs for the upcoming 2014-15 season at the Geist area community theatre.

Such as the need for as many as 60 actors to participate in four plays this season. Or the continued desire to add season ticketholders and full-time members to the facility on 86th Street.

But perhaps the board’s biggest need is, by de facto, its tallest order. e Mud Creek Players hope to ll 4,000 seats for the 28 upcoming performances of “Arsenic and Old Lace” (September 9-27); “It’s a Wonderful Life” (November 21-December 6); “California Suite” (February 13-28); and “Southern Hospitality” (May 1-16).

It may not be an easy task to produce 28 sellouts, but the directors are armed with passion and four fan-favorites on their new calendar. Each play rings with familiarity.

“Every theatre struggles to nd a good

balance between creativity and productivity,” said Michelle Moore, an active member of the drama commi ee. “You want to put on shows that will challenge audiences and stretch your performers and designers. But you also have to put bu s in the seats.

“You can’t always limit your repertoire to Neil Simon and Agatha Christie, but familiar plays sell well. But they do come with higher expectations. If you do a show that everyone loves and knows, as a director you feel a great deal of pressure to give them something more than they’ve previously seen.”

at is the challenge that Ann Ellerbrook faces in directing “Arsenic and Old Lace” and Ken Delp for “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Both have been familiar theatre shows, and each is a legendary movie favorite that has been frequently telecasted. Fabled Hollywood stars Cary Grant (“Arsenic and Old Lace”) and Jimmy Stewart (“It’s a Wonderful Life”) are big screen anchors in the two performances.

“You try not to get too far away from the original,” said Ellerbrook of the play that was scripted in the 1930s by German immigrant

Joseph Kesselring and directed by Frank Capra in the 1944 movie version. “It was good in the 1940s, and it is still good today. It’s a clever comedy that has stood the test of time.”

It is also a dark comedy that focuses on two spinster sisters and their three nephews. Barcia Alejos and Carla Crandall perform as Martha and Abby Brewster.

“ e cast has to have chemistry in this play,” admi ed Ellerbrook, who has 13 actors to corral. “It is important they are believable, and they have to be on their toes with their timing. Timing is extremely important in a comedy.”

Delp will face similar challenges with “It’s a Wonderful Life.” He hopes to have more than 20 actors during upcoming open auditions. And he knows he won’t have the services of the most familiar person in the movie.

“Jimmy Stewart isn’t available, so we’re looking for a person to play that role and building a cast willing and able to put in the work needed to create a memory,” said Delp, who has acted in numerous productions at Mud Creek. “I found a script that is close to the lm but with a life of its own. ultimate goal is to make a holiday memory for the performing side as well as the people who come to see the show.”

The second half of the 2014-15 season will be carried by two heavyweights. First, there is “California Suite,” and then comes the season closer, “Southern Hospitality.” “California Suite” is one of a long line of Neil Simon plays (“The Odd Couple,” “Biloxi Blues,” “Barefoot in the Park,” et al.) that have rocked Broadway, Indianapolis and Peoria, Ill.

“Southern Hospitality” is the third installment of a raucous comedy series that tells of the preoccupations of the Futrelle sisters – Frankie, Twink and Honey Raye – in Fayro, Texas. Its predecessor, “Christmas Belles,” played in front of several sellouts last season. Theatre veteran Linda Eberharter returns to the director’s chair.

Eberharter confesses she already has the cast selected.

“I could have gone differently [with “Christmas Belles”] but, truthfully, there was no way not to bring back the same people,” she said. “We have such a loyal patronage, and the cast has a following. Believe me, people want to see what happens to the Futrelle sisters from Texas.

“I relish doing the play, but I also can say that I’m already sad to think about leaving Fayro, Texas, and these wonderful and colorful people who have been so much fun. It will be bittersweet for the cast and me.”

Already submerged into a future play for 2015-16 at Mud Creek is wily director Paul Haskin, who recently steered “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Shakespeare Goes to Hollywood” at the theatre. His undertaking of the musical “A Funny Thing That Happened on the Way to the Forum” will be a major test for Haskin and musical director Ashton Wolf.

“Our biggest challenge will be putting on a big show in limited space without

diminishing the scope of the play,” said Haskin of the play, written in1962 with a movie produced in 1966 that starred actor Zero Mostel and the songs of Stephen Sondheim. “We will have to get the word out early to attract the talent needed and to draw a full house every night.”

Sounds like another want ad may be needed.

When you think of breweries in Indy, you probably think of Broad Ripple or downtown. Well, guess what ~ you have one right here in your own backyard. Located just north of the railroad tracks off Olio Road in McCordsville is a new brewery called Scarlet Lane Brewing Company.

This hidden treasure opened in May and is off to a great start! You can already find its offerings in more than 65 locations around town. It produces between six to eight ales at any given time. It is constantly adding to its collection of Hoosier crafted ales. So, if you fall in love with one of their selections this week ~ stock up!!! It might not be there next time.

The night we went with our friends, we sampled all of its selections. The girls really liked the Humbled Peach! This started off as a seasonal beer, but it was kept on due to its popularity. The owners never thought a peach beer would take off here. They were happy to be wrong. All natural organic peaches are used for this beer.

Dorian, Vivian and Silas are Scarlet Lane’s three most popular beers. The Dorian is a coconut coffee stout and was a favorite with the guys. That night the Scarlet Lane Brewing Company also had the Paeonia Farmhouse ale made from the Indiana state flower. Did you know that was the state flower? We didn’t!

SCARLET LANE BREWING OPENS IN MCCORDSVILLE

• Beer makes you smarter! A New England Journal of Medicine study found that women who drank

moderately had better cognitive function.

• At one time it was illegal for men to brew beer, and women were the first professional brewers.

• Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty glass.

• It’s believed the Pilgrims on the Mayflower stopped at Plymouth Rock instead of continuing to Virginia because they ran out of beer?

• Freezing your beer will make it stronger!

• IPA = India Pale Ale…it’s a hoppy beer style within the broader category of pale ale.

• A growler is a container for beer bought by the measure.

• Stout vs. Ale? A stout is a dark beer made using roasted malt or roasted barley. It’s stronger with higher alcohol content than an ale, which tends to be more fruity and robust. Stouts take longer to brew.

All You Can Eat, Made to Order Breakfast!

What a great way to experience Hoosier roots! We could really taste the di erent avors in all of the samples we tried.

is whole enterprise started seven years ago with a brew making kit given to the company’s CEO, Eilise Lane. She fell in love with tinkering around with di erent ingredients and trying to brew the perfect beer. A er years of perfecting her cra and completing her education at the American Brewer’s Guild, while shadowing at some of her favorite Oregon breweries, Eilise made the jump and opened her own brewery. She wasn’t alone though. She got the help of six of her friends. ese college-educated friends came back to their Hoosier roots to start the launch process for Scarlet Lane Brewing Company (SLBC). ey then began the process of creating a unique brand of ales. eir mission is to be your humble brewers promoting knowledge and continued be erment in the art of beer making.

Located at 7724 Depot Road in McCordsville, SLBC is a warehouse marked by its scarlet red door propped open by a 10-gallon bucket lled with fresh Indiana corn. When you walk in, you’ll see the large stainless steel ke les that brew the beer. You’ll also be greeted by one of the six owners serving samples behind the bar. is isn’t a restaurant; this is a working brewery that also happens to have all of its beers on tap for you to taste before you purchase. Bring in your growler (see Fun Facts) to have it lled with one of their beers. Filling a growler costs $10-$15, depending on your choice of beer. If you go empty handed like we did, you can buy a growler there. FYI…your growler must be clean in order for them to be able to ll it. SLBC is also in the process of obtaining permission to be able to serve customers in a more traditional pub way. Watch its website for information.

Oh, wait! It’s Sunday, and you forgot to buy beer before heading to the lake?!? Scarlet…

frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn! Grab your growler and get a re ll here from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.! For poor planners like us, this place is a dream on Sundays! is place can make your SuNdAy FuNdAy!!!

ere are a lot of fun events coming in the month of September that SLBC wants you to know about! ey will be at the Taste of Hancock County on Sept. 13. Also, join in the Literary Pub Crawl on Mass Ave on September 20. (I suppose we can skip book club for September because we will be doing this!) How about dressing in white and heading downtown to the Circle on Sept. 21 to enjoy “Le Diner en Blanc”? SLBC will also be part of the fun at the Colts Tap Takeover Tavern on Sept. 28. Most importantly, don’t forget to stop in and say “Happy Beerday” to Eilise on her birthday on Sept. 7! With so many beers to enjoy and so many places to enjoy them, what’s not to love about Scarlet Lane Brewery? Frankly my dear, we DO give a damn!!! Cheers!

You know her from her smiling face on the evening news on Fox 59. Fanchon Stinger co-anchors at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., delivering the news with plenty of ease and in a straightforward, no-nonsense, relaxed style.

Don’t let that laid back demeanor fool you, our northern neighbor is a 13-time Emmy award-winning anchor/journalist, who has forged a career centered on making a difference in community around her.

Stinger sees her television news job as a way to give back. She enjoys contributing to the positive growth of the community with the emphasis on the success of central Indiana young people.

Stinger works with several anti-bullying initiatives in Central Indiana aimed at encouraging positive self-esteem and character enforcement in and outside of the classroom.

She also spends a lot of her free time mentoring young people through their academic years and professionally.

A goal of hers is to spend time with homeless teenagers in our city.

Fanchon, which is French for “freedom,” was born and raised in Detroit. Her parents were educators who sent her and her sister to private schools growing up and always taught them they have gifts to give back.

She attended the University of Michigan and became interested in television news.

She was a natural in the newsroom— moving up from a paid intern position to a reporter, then to an anchor job.

She spent 11 years in Detroit as anchor /reporter before one day getting a call from Indianapolis.

“I kept seeing the ‘317’ area code pop up on my phone,” Fanchon said. “I said who could that be? I don’t know anyone in that area code.”

It was Fox 59 calling, and the rest is history.

Fanchon and her husband lived on Geist for a couple of years where they enjoyed boating. “Water centers me,” Fanchon said. “Maybe it’s my Michigan background, but I love the water.”

Today the couple resides in the Westfield area to be closer to the Fox 59 studios.

Fanchon enjoys spending time with her husband and puppy “Arie,” an adorable beagle mix that she posts photos of on Facebook.

“Someone stopped me the other day and instead of saying, “Are you Fanchon Stinger? they said, ‘are you Arie’s mom?’” she said with a laugh.

For now, Arie is the couple’s only child, but they do hope to have children someday, as well.

In the meantime, Fanchon will be anchoring another new newscast on Fox 59 this fall and as always, she seems to take it all in stride.

“It’s all about time management and prioritizing,” she says with a smile. “God comes first, then family, then business.”

Watch for Fanchon Stinger on the new 7 p.m. newscast in late September and learn more at Fox59.com.
