DENVERHistoryIn the summer of 1858, a small group of prospectors from Georgia crossed the great plains of the Colorado Territory and made a region-changing discovery at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Gold. And although not much of the precious metal was found, the mere whisper of the word was enough to start a veritable stampede into the region.

GeographyDenver is in the center of the Front Range Urban Corridor, between the Rocky Mountains to the west and the High Plains to the east. Denver’s topography consists of plains in the city center with hilly areas to the north, west and south. According to the United States Census Bureau the city has a total area of 155 square miles (401 km2), of which 153 square miles (396 km2) is land and 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2) (1.1%) is water.[53] The City and County of Denver is surrounded by only three other coun-ties: Adams County to the north and east, Arapahoe County to the south and east, and Jefferson County to the west.

Although Denver’s nickname is the “Mile-High City” because its official elevation is one mile above sea level, defined by the elevation of the spot of a benchmark on the steps of the State Capitol building, the elevation of the entire city ranges from 5,130 to 5,690 feet (1,560 to 1,730 m). According to Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) and the National Elevation Dataset, the city’s elevation is 5,278 feet (1,609 m), which is reflected on various websites such as the National Weather Service.

TransportationWhether on foot, by car, by bike, or by light rail, there are plenty of options for getting around Denver. Looking for Downtown Denver transportation to get around the 16th Street Mall? Denver offers free public transportation with the Lightrail. Want to tour the city on a bike? B-Cycle makes Denver even more bike-friendly. These are just a few examples of options for transportation in Denver.

ClimateDenver lies within the semi-arid, continental climate zone (Köppen climate classification: BSk).[58] Despite having a partially dry climate, data from the University of Melbourne show that Denver is influenced by other climates that are possibly a consequence of the adjacent elevation that changes precipita-tion and temperature. Humid continental and subtropical microclimates can be found.[59][60] It has four distinct seasons and receives most of its precipitation from April through August. Due to its inland location on the High Plains, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, the region can be subject to sudden changes in weather.[61]

July is the warmest month, with an average high temperature of 88 °F (31.1 °C).[62] Summers range from warm to hot with occasional, sometimes severe, afternoon thunderstorms and high temperatures reaching 90 °F (32 °C) on 38 days annually, and occasionally 100 °F (38 °C). December, the coldest month of the year, has an average daily high temperature of 46 °F (7.8 °C). Winters consist of periods of snow and very low temperatures alternating with periods of milder weather due to the warming effect of Chinook winds. In winter, daytime highs can exceed 60 °F (16 °C) but also often fail to reach 32 °F (0 °C) during periods of cold weather and can even fail to rise above 0 °F (−18 °C) on occasion.[63] On the coldest nights of the year, lows can easily fall to −10 °F (−23 °C) or below. Snowfall is common throughout the late fall, winter and early spring, averaging 53.5 inches (136 cm) for 1981–2010.[64] The average window for measurable (≥0.1 in or 0.25 cm) snow is October 17 through April 27; however, measurable snowfall has fallen in Denver as early as September 4 and as late as June 3. Extremes in temperature range from −29 °F (−34 °C) on January 9, 1875, up to 105 °F (41 °C) as recently as June 29, 2018.[65] Due to the city’s high elevation and aridity, diurnal temperature variation is large throughout the year.

EconomyThe Denver MSA has a gross metropolitan product of $157.6 billion in 2010, making it the 18th largest metro economy in the United States.[87] Denver’s economy is based partially on its geographic position and its connection to some of the country’s major transportation systems. Because Denver is the largest city within 500 miles (800 km), it has become a natural location for storage and distribution of goods and services to the Mountain States, Southwest states, as well as all western states. Another benefit for distribution is that Denver is nearly equidistant from large cities of the Midwest, such as Chicago and St. Louis and some large cities of the West Coast, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco.

FoodHome to award-winning chefs and restaurateurs, Denver has emerged as one of the top dining locations in the country. Denver’s local culinary scene is thriving, offering everything from farm-to-table bistros to classic steakhouses to historic Denver restaurants. Whether downtown on the 16th Street Mall or looking for a unique spot in Cherry Creek, visitors have a variety of great options to choose from. To find the best restaurants in Denver, explore VISIT DENVER’s articles on Denver Dining or search the Restaurant Listings below.

TippingWhile tipping is not mandatory in most of the United States, it is customary in many circumstances for service, especially at almost all sit-down restaurants which offer table service and many food servers depend on tips as an essential part of their wage. Some states allow a “tip credit” to count as part of the Federal Minimum Wage of $7.25/hour so tipped employees may be paid as low as $2.00 an hour plus tips. Generally, the average tip is 15% to 20% of the total meal cost.

Keep in mind that those who provide service are often depen-dent on tip income and generally are grateful for any tips received, especially when prompt and exceptional service has been provided. Tipping is the means by which to acknowledge good service.

Credit CardsIn the United States, the credit card is king, be sure to check with your financial institution that issued your credit card to find out their fees on foreign exchange. Sometimes you are better off using one particular card over another. No matter what method payment you use you will have to pay an exchange rate. Some establishments will try to disallow the use of credit cards for small purchases. Also, some smaller restaurants still operate as “cash only” -- be sure to ask before dining if you are out of cash. You’ll also want to keep some small bills in your wallet for the many toll roads and bridges you may encounter, especially along the east and west coasts. Some take credit or ATM cards, but most do not.

If you have a “chip-and-PIN” credit card as used in the UK and most other countries around the world, you’ll find that it is nearly always treated in the old-fashioned way - i.e. the retailer swipes the magnetic stripe and you sign the printed slip. However, some establishments might have “chip-and-PIN” enabled equipment, but the employees don’t know how to use it. When they swipe the card, they see a message on the machine asking them to “Enter the card, chip-side up,” or similar, which they don’t understand. If this happens, they may want to reject the card, in which case you may have to talk them through the process. Also, it may be difficult to enter the PIN as they won’t neces-sarily have a PIN-pad within reach of the customer. Be careful, as the old-fashioned ‘’swipe and sign’’ method is still used in the United States, this means that credit card fraud levels are very high (highest in the world at 47%) and if your card is stolen, it is extremely easy for the thief to use your card as they can simply fake your signature (as no PIN is required) and no one usually checks. Card skimming is also highly prevalent due to the old system used.

At gas stations, all the pumps are Pay at the Pump. Most of them require the ZIP code pertaining to the credit card, but not a PIN. UK post codes are not valid, so you must take your card to the cashier and pay for the fuel you estimate you need. If your tank takes less than you have paid for, the cost is deducted from your card. Some pumps don’t require a ZIP code, so you can use your card, again without a PIN, so it’s worth trying your card first.

ATMs (Cashpoints) - for our foreign visitors residing outside the USAn important tip for German travelers is the fact that customers of Deutsche Bank are not charged for withdrawals from ATM machines that are operated by Bank of America.

If you plan to travel to the USA with a GPS device in tow (TomTom, Garmin, Magellan....) please note that many of these carry little applications that will indicate where to find an ATM machine in a given area; it is just a matter of investigating the company website or the computer application that comes with your device. For operators of iPhones and Blackberries, similar technology exists, so keep an eye open for it: it may help you get your cash even in the most remote parts (the stretch from Flagstaff Arizona through to San Diego being an example.)

When using an ATM in the USA, note that some machines may differ from those in other countries. Occasionally, after entering your PIN your card will be returned to you and not held in the ATM until your transaction is complete. Pocket your card and continue.

In 2015, very few ATMs are chip and PIN enabled in California, Arizona and Nevada. This may apply to all other states. You will NOT be able to withdraw cash from a non-chip and PIN ATM. As stated below, some banks, allow you to withdraw cash over the counter using a debit card, but you must present your passport as ID. No fee is charged. ATMs charge a minimum fee of $3 for withdrawals using a US debit card.

Also, many banks, gas stations, and supermarkets will give you cash over the counter (called “cash back”) with your debit card and ID. Getting cash back in a supermarket when you make a purchase is a good option if you are trying to avoid ATM fees, which can be charged both by the bank which owns the ATM, and your home bank.

PhonesInternational calls are initiated by dialing “011”, followed by the ‘country code’, the ‘area code’ and 7-digit phone number. If the phone you’re calling from is a cell (mobile) phone, then the ‘1’ is not required but the ‘011’ is required.

The standard American telephone number is ten digits, such as (555) 555-1234. The first three digits are the “area code,” which, in the past, indicated in what part of the country the phone was located. At present, with the popularity of cell (mobile) phones, people in one area of the country might have phones

with area codes from a different part of the country (since these phones were purchased there). If you make a call from a phone with an area code which is different from the area code of the phone being called, then you must always include ‘area code’ when you make such a call. Sometimes, the ‘area code’ must be entered even when the originating phone and the phone being called have the same area code. (In the case of calling between two phones that have the same area code, try the call without using the area code first; if you get an error message directing you to enter the area code before the number, re-call the phone by entering the ‘area code’, and then the 7-digit phone number).

911 is the standardized number for emergency services (for example fire, police, and ambulance). You can normally call 911 for free from any phone (including cell/mobile phones) including pay phones (coins aren’t necessary, just key in 911).

Electric Power in the USAElectric power is standardized in all states across the USA. It is set at 110 Volts and 60 cycles. 220 Volt power is used in homes only for large appliances like stoves, water heaters and clothes dryers. It is not normally available for personal appliances.

Standard electric plugs have two flat blades. The plugs on some newer appliances have a third round grounding pin. Almost all homes and commercial buildings are equipped with electrical receptacles that can accommodate either type of plug.

You may need an adaptor and power converterIf you bring any electrical appliance to the USA, you may need an adaptor to fit the US electrical receptacles. You may also need a converter to change the voltage from 110 volts to 220 volts.
