Dear Parents

Guest speakers always receive a warm welcome in Junior School assembly and talks which transport the audience to other parts of the world are particularly well received. On Tuesday Miss Kelleher spoke about her experience at Science Foo Camp, held at the corporate headquarters of Google in California, in mid-August. The children enjoyed seeing glimpses of Googleplex and were keen to tell Miss Kelleher how to get her Google watch working! The Woolly Mammoth slide in her presentation also attracted a lot of attention and led to some lively discussion later in the day. Miss Kelleher’s blog about her visit to Sci Foo can be found here.

Other recent visitors have also come from within the Foundation; last Thursday Isabel Shears and Dom McGann, two Year 13 students from our Sixth Form College, gave an excellent presentation about their three week visit to Ladakh with the Exploration Society. As well as giving us real insight as to what they both gave to and gained from this unique experience, they answered a variety of questions from across Years 3-6 with real understanding and sensitivity. The following day the focus of attention moved to the Library where National Poetry Day was celebrated, during break times as well as lessons. It was a particular pleasure to see members of Year 3 entertaining their class-mates with poetry of their choice from the luxury of the green O seat!

The rain and lower temperatures have not deterred juniors from making the most of outdoor learning opportunities; there have recently been a number of open air lessons, including Maths in the grounds of the Senior School and at Latham Road, Art in the playground, English in the garden of 5 Brookside, Geography in the Botanic Gardens and Science at the Nature Reserve! 6Alpha thoroughly enjoyed the first of a series of lessons on the Reserve and members of 6A are looking forward to their visit next week.

This morning we congratulated 18 Junior School pupils for their participation in the Aquathlon at Bottisham Village School last Sunday. The girls were in six teams and they faced stiff competition as all the other competitors were members of triathlon clubs. Stephen Perse Foundation was, in fact, the only school to compete and the teams finished about mid table with SPF Seals narrowly defeating SPF Sharks! Special mention must go to Ava Miels, who finished second in the Tristart category, and Katy Leonard and Sophie Allen, who finished 4th and 5th respectively in the Tristar 1 category.

Congratulations also to the members of Years 1-3 who entered the Christmas Pudding Lid Design Competition. It is not particularly easy to think of festive pictures in September but the children produced some brilliant designs and the judges had a very hard time choosing the winner. In the end the prize went to Nicholas George in 3Alpha; Kamran Bennett, 3A, was highly commended for his design.

We look forward to seeing you, your families and friends at Junior School Open Morning tomorrow!

Kind regards,Katie MilneHead of Junior School

City Pre-prep

In the Pre-prep we encourage our children to be active thinkers. Discover how we do this in the Year 2 classroom and take home activities that you can do with your child to help them develop

their ‘thinking tool box’.

In Year 1 find out about this term’s topic ‘Under the Sea’. We will be sorting objects that could be found in the sea and making an RNLI life boat. You will see photographs of our adventures in Great Yarmouth and hear

how the children learn skills in Music, Geography, Science and Art through this watery theme.

Our Reception children are experts on the iPads - come

along to their classroom to see how the iPad is just another tool for learning and a great way to spark the children’s

imaginations.

Kindergarten is the beginning of the learning journey - spend

time in the Kindergarten classroom to see how we

encourage lots of talking and how important this is in helping

the children understand the world around them.

Christmas Puddings - Plum & Chocolate

Plum Pudding (available in two sizes) This Christmas take a break from cooking and try the award winning Ultimate Plum Pudding. An exceptionally light and delicious Christmas pudding made by a small (but fully accredited) Cumbrian company which has been making puddings for over 20 years. All the vine fruits are soaked in lots of brandy and dry sherry. Fresh breadcrumbs and freshly grated carrot help give the pudding a lighter texture. Ingredients are top quality and much more varied than usual – almonds, walnuts, stem ginger, apricots, cherries - as well as the best raisins and sultanas. (Contains nuts but suitable for vegetarians). Chocolate Pudding Alternatively, try the Triple Chocolate Pudding. Not just cocoa - proper chocolate! It’s made with melted dark Belgian chocolate, fine French cocoa powder, chocolate chips, chocolate liqueur and a good slosh of brandy. The pudding will be labelled with The Stephen Perse Foundation competition winning design, making it an ideal gift for friends and relatives and prices are comparable with the very best puddings available in the shops. We are ordering direct from the manufacturer which allows enough profit to go to the school and an offer of a very reasonable price to you. All proceeds raised from the sale of puddings will be allocated to the development of an outdoor learning centre at our Latham Road Sports Field and Nature Reserve. To order, please complete the form below and return it asap with your cheque made payable to The Stephen Perse Foundation PFA , in an envelope marked ‘PFA – Christmas Puddings’.
