Lenray Gleaned from 1923 Greeley County Republican By Nadine Cheney Nov. 22, 1923--There was to be big doin’s at Tribune. Greeley County had arrived at that point in the development of civilization where a county seat fight was necessary. T.P. Tucker was in Goodland 70 miles away. He craved to see that fight and maybe to fight some himself. That was in 1888. A county seat fight was a top liner in amusement circles in those days. Tucker preferred to be in Tribune when the show started. There was no artificial means of transportation for Tucker because he was without funds. Maybe one side or the other would supply fighting equipment when he got there, or he could have a right good time just looking on. Consequently, he strolled over. Tucker was impressed with the neighborhood. Tribune and Horace 2 miles west were good towns in those days and down into the early “Nineties.” He decided to stay. Barbering was his means of making a living. He opened a shop where anybody could be shaved or have his hair cut during two days a week. If a fellow cared for tonsorial work on off days he looked around town for Tucker who threw down the shovel or tied the team, according to what he was doing at the time, and led the way to his one-chair barber shop. HELPED MOVE TOWNS—He was a good barber. Many a customer, who had been shaved in New York and Chicago, after experiencing the soothing influence of Tucker’s razor, asked why he wasted his time in a place like that. But Tucker had his eyes on opportunities that would pay better than the best shop location on Michigan Boulevard or Fifth Avenue in the big towns. When he came to Tribune he worked outside of barber shop hours at whatever came to hand. After a while he acquired a team and did hauling about town and during dry seasons between Tribune and Granada, Colorado, 55 miles away. The barbering business did not flourish when Tucker was away but he soon reduced the accumulated whiskers when he came back. After he was 22 years old he went to school two years. Then came the dry seasons of ’93, ’94, and ’95 folks in Horace and Tribune decided the grass looked greener around Holly, Colorado, and they moved over, 42 miles. Houses were loaded on wagons and taken along. Tucker helped in the moving. Brodey hit another 3 in the second period as Tribune pulled to within two points 14-16 at the half. The key is getting out early. If we score well the 1st quarter, our confidence soars.” In the B game Tribune led 5-4 after one period, but the Indians controlled the rest of the game for their 34- 18 win. Nolvin Mancia led the Jackrabbits scoring with 10 points; Joel Lira scored 9. “We played well against St Francis,” remarked coach Shafer. “It’s nice to get a win. We needed it. We did not turn the ball over much against St Francis, and we did a lot more scoring on transition.” The Jr. High A team, which has only one 8 th grader on the starting lineup is 3-5 on the season. “We will probably have the #4 seed next week in the NWKL league tournament next Thursday and Saturday at Atwood,” remarked Shafer. “With the way we have improved, we can scare some folks.” Jr. High boys’ basketball teams lose to Leoti and win against St Francis Bryson Bjorklund shoots a 3.

In games this past week the Tribune Jr. High boys’ A and B teams both lost to Leoti on Monday, Dec. 9 and both teams won against St. Francis on Thursday, Dec. 12. The games were played at Tribune. The Jackrabbit A team lost to Leoti 25-36 and the B team lost 18-34. In the A game, the Tribune boys trailed 9-12 after one period of play. Brodey Grubb and Kasen Felty both hit first quarter threes. Brodey hit another 3 in the second period as Tribune pulled to within two points 14-16 at the half. With two more 3s by Grubb and 5 points by Max Whitham, Tribune trailed by 2 points with 1:20 remaining in the game, but the Indians dominated the final minute of play and won 36-25. “We didn’t shoot the ball well at all,” remarked Tribune coach Kyle Shafer. “Our defense played well, but we were only 4 of 12 from the line. The key is getting out early. If we score well the 1st quarter, our confidence soars.” In the B game Tribune led 5-4 after one period, but

the Indians controlled the rest of the game for their 34-18 win. Jesus Chanez led the Tribune scoring with 11 points and Eli Sherer scored 7. Against St. Francis, the Jackrabbit A team dominated from the start with a 16-0 first quarter lead. Lincoln Shafer hit 6 first quarter points, Max Whitham 4, Bryson Bjorklund 4 and Brodey Grubb 2. Lincoln and Bryson led the 2nd period scoring with each hitting two 3-pointers for a 35-8 lead at the half. Tribune led 45-12 after three periods before letting the second string finish the game. Shafer led the Tribune scoring with 17 points. Whitham scored 6 and Jesus Chanez and Kasen Felty both scored 5. The Jackrabbit B team dominated the Indians in their 38-11 win. Nolvin Mancia led the Jackrabbits scoring with 10 points; Joel Lira scored 9. “We played well against St Francis,” remarked coach Shafer. “It’s nice to get a win. We needed it. We did not turn the ball over much against St Francis, and we

did a lot more scoring on transition.” The Jr. High A team, which has only one 8th grader on the starting lineup is 3-5 on the season. “We will probably have the #4 seed next week in the NWKL league tournament next Thursday and Saturday at Atwood,” remarked Shafer. “With the way we have improved, we can scare some folks.”
