Our HistoryOn June 23, 1969, George E. Butler & Associates, Inc., consulting engineers was established. The firm’s offices were located on the sixth floor at 114 West 10th Street in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. GBA started with ten employees, led by George Butler, and specialized in site development, land planning and surveying.

First-year clients included the Bode Benevolent Trust, an inheritance left to the City of Saint Joseph, Missouri, and the new Jackson County Sports Complex Authority, for which GBA provided all civil site engineering services, including design of roadways, bridges, and parking facilities.

With the dedicated efforts of a small but capable staff, many jobs — and much growth — were to come.

Bridge Design & Inspection

We design and inspect bridges ranging from small pedestrian bridges to multi-span highway structures that carry several lanes of traffic. Our design team — one of the largest in the Kansas City area — provides on-call and emergency design for several clients, from cities to counties to DOTs.

GBA provides a comprehensive range of bridge design and rehabilitation services, from assistance in obtaining funding to planning, preliminary and final design, and construction period observation.

Our staff is experienced in determining economical bridge sizes and types and is sensitive to client needs for low-maintenance costs. This experience includes structure inventory and appraisals, studies, and feasibility reports. GBA uses several design software programs for roadway layout and bridge analysis and design. Computer-aided drafting (CAD) with either MicroStation or AutoCAD is used for drawing preparation.

WaterThe water industry is turning into the age of replacement as aging waterlines and mains continue to fail and cause service disruptions and breaks. Our water technicians and engineers are trained to utilize PICA data for repair and rehabilitation recommendations. Our condition assessment services are well suited to provide construction recommendations that minimize disruptions and service downtime.

Having established water main replacement programs at a number of cities, we know what it takes to implement and carry out such programs. From program management to one off repair/replacements, we can tackle any water system need you might have. We have constructability and permitting experts on staff to provide the design alternative evaluation and project assistance necessary to ensure the success of a project.

Water District No. 7Johnson County, Kansas

As the District merges with the smaller CRWD6 to expand and provide water to a larger area, GBA was hired to provide interconnection evaluation. This evaluation involved evaluating and updating the WD7’s existing model to confirm the hydraulic design parameters of the booster pump station, the size and location of the elevated storage tank; location and settings for pressure reducing valves and finally, establishing a phasing plan for improvements. Once completed, GBA is currently under contract to design the new elevated storage tank that will be needed to complete the merger.

Water Main Replacement & Relocation ProjectLee’s Summit, Missouri

The pipelines were relocated in coordination with construction of a new interchange for US-50 and MO-291, and for reconstruction of the City’s Jefferson Street. This required coordination of some design criteria to meet State and/or City standards, depending on pipeline location. The pipeline was located to maximize placement in easements just outside of city street and state highway right -of-way, to avoid conflicts with other utilities, and in coordination with grading and development plans for adjacent properties.

Water Main Relocation ProjectsLawrence, Kansas

We have designed several projects as part of Lawrence’s water main replacement program. Assisting with these designs provided us opportunities to assist with maintaining the continuity of the program.

We have engineering expertise in data analysis, I/I quantification and removal, master planning, and sewer rehabilitation design. Our engineering and turnkey capabilities allow us to better evaluate sewers with the end user in mind so our clients are assured the collected data is appropriate for their needs.

To assist our clients in cost effectively managing and maintaining their sewer systems, GBA has taken a comprehensive approach using system inventory and mapping, flow monitoring, field inspection, system modeling and analysis and master planning.

In addition to our expertise outside the fence of wastewater treatment plants, we have the technical experts that can assist with repair, rehabilitation and design of pumping and treatment facilities within the fence. Our team can assist with evaluations of existing facilities, future repair recommendations and new construction considerations. As part of both aspects of wastewater engineering, collection system and pumping and treatment, we have experience providing business case analyses for repair/rehabilitation recommendations and new development requirements.

From the collection of comprehensive and accurate data to the recommendations of repair/rehabilitation from the collected data, we consider SSES to be one of the staples of our business. Our field technicians understand that quality data is of utmost importance for the smooth and successful completion of any SSES. The GBA Team provides all aspects of data collection for sewer improvement projects. We provide these services daily and specialize in sewer investigation and design. We have invested in the equipment, personnel and training to complete this work with a systematic approach. We offer the full complement of SSES services:

Flow MonitoringWe own 100+ of our own flow meters, rain gauges and piezometers with field technicians who are experts in site selection for acquisition of quality data.

Smoke & Dyed-Water Testing We have performed smoke and dyed-water testing in cities throughout the Midwest. We own the equipment and resources necessary to self-perform these services.

Manhole Inspections Whether it’s a basic surface inspection or full NASSCO Manhole Assessment and Certification Program evaluation. Our field crews are trained to perform whatever level inspection you require.

GBA has completed many sewer improvement plans that have resulted in I/I reduction, renewed systems, elimination of overflows and elimination of basement backups. Since no two projects are the same, we tailor every project approach to determine what improvements will yield the best results with a cost-effective approach. When recommending improvements, we analyze the current assets and provide:

When identifying capacity issues, GBA has vast experience in modeling sanitary, storm and combined sewer systems. Our technique has evolved from a model developed by GBA in the late 1980s to the use of InfoWorks ICM, PC-SWMM and Optimizer.

Specifically, in our water environment group, we have experience providing new sewers to expanding municipal areas but also providing the sewer networks that accompany our development projects led by our Civil/Survey group.

Additionally, when existing sewers are at capacity or new sewer is needed to assist aging infrastructure such as removing an under-performing pump station or end-of-life sewer, we have the expertise to provide solutions for this as well. We will account for all necessary aspects of your particular project to minimize public disturbance and maximize positive public perception. GBA’s experience with future growth projections, business case analyses and modeling of existing sewers provides us with the ability to provide a holistic solution that best answers the call to your unique situation.

As part of GBA’s water, sanitary and storm sewer capabilities, our staff has provided treatment, pumping and facility planning experience on a variety of projects. This expertise can range from existing pump station evaluation, treatment upgrades or new treatment and pumping process design. GBA’s team includes professionals who have worked on pump stations and treatment plants during all stages of useful life – from brand new to decades old. We can evaluate needs in the field and discuss necessary changes with the people who operate these stations and plants regularly.

Pump station evaluations can take many forms, from simple inspection of items that are reaching the end of their useful life, to analysis of pumping capacity and flow curves. GBA has staff with pump station design, construction, and troubleshooting analy¬sis experience.

New pumping or treatment process design is another facet of our pumping and treatment capabilities. Whether it’s to replace systems at the end of their useful life or construct entirely new ones.
