The anticipated event went down a storm with Las Vegas style stilt walkers welcoming guests and catching the eye of passers by, whilst indoors a fun casino and dance acts Kdanz and Bambeat enter- tained the crowds. Special guests included local dignitary Mayor of Shildon Gareth Howe. The training company, which was founded in 1984 has directly helped more than 3000 individuals to find employment and put over 5500 onto courses. Many of these learners have overcome great personal barriers, often requiring additional support in specific areas of their lives. The Annual Awards Evening is an opportunity to celebrate the achieve- ments of the learners and to thank those who have supported them along the way. Highlights of the night included the presenta- tion of the highly-coveted Lipinski Award, which is awarded to the most “Out- standing and Inspirational Learner of the year”. This year’s winner was Sean Deant. Sean started on the Gateway To Work programme having been unemployed for several years due to being the main carer for his sick daughter as she spent the first few years of her life in hospital. His gap in employment became his barrier to securing employment. Through sheer hard work and determination and support from S & D Training and Working Links Sean eventually went on to secure full-time employment with Tallents in Newton Aycliffe as a production operative. Company MD Toni Stratton said, “Every year we celebrate the achieve- ments of our learners and the businesses that support them. This year however, has been that little bit extra special with it being our 25th Anniversary. “What sets S&D Training aside from other training companies is that it was set up purely for the benefit of the local community and a strong fundamental belief that everyone has the right to an education, to learn and to achieve still underpins the companies operations to this very day.” The company is now a registered charity and is currently going through positive new changes. Bishop Auckland Town Hall’s ‘Have a Go’ season invites you to try your hand at a variety of activities to keep you occupied in the winter months. Among the activities on offer are a beading workshop, a glass jewellery workshop and beginners printing workshops. Most are aimed at all ages from 12 years through to adults and are an ideal op- portunity for people to try new crafts they might want to develop, or for families to get crafty together! The season begins on Saturday 2nd October at 10am with a Beading Workshop where, under the expert guidance of Andrea from Bead Ladies, participants will create a daisy necklace and 6-chain bracelet. The cost is £6 and includes materials. On Wednesday 27th October at 10am there is a Steel Pans Workshop, where participants can try their hand at making music caribbean style! The class is for ages 10+, places are limited and cost £6. A Glass Jewellery workshop on Saturday 6th November will give participants an opportunity to create up to 3 pieces of unique glass jewellery, under the expert eye of tutor Alison Lowery from Entropy Glass. Alison will have completed pieces returned well in time for Christmas. Due to the nature of the workshop under 14's must be accom- panied by an adult. Places for this workshop cost £10. ‘Let’s Get Digital’ FREE Computer courses

Using Technology Sessions As part of the UKOnline funded ‘Let’s Get Digital’ project, Sunnydale Community College are running the following sessions to help people within the community get to grips with some of the technologies they have available to them at home. You don’t have to attend all sessions you can just attend the sessions that you are interested in.

Working With Photos Tuesday 19th October 9.30-12 noon

Many people have a digital camera and rely on supermarkets or other high street outlets to help process the photos, why not come along and learn how to copy your photos from the Digital

Camera to your own PC, learn how to print them out and make some basic amendments. We can also show you how to use a Photo Slide and Negative Scanner to bring your old photos to life and enable you to save them to the PC in digital format. You will learn how to keep the photos safe and backed up onto storage devices such as CD’s or USB memory sticks.

Working with Music Tuesday 19th October 5.30-8.00pm

This session will introduce you to copying and transferring music from your CD’s onto the computer and then onto your MP3 Player using Windows Media Player or onto your iPod or iPhone using iTunes. We can also show you how to use a USB record turntable that allows you to copy music from your old LP’s and Vinyl’s onto the Computer and then onto CD. Webcams & Skype Thursday 21st October 1.30-4.00pm

If you already have broadband access at home come along and learn how you could save money on your phone bills by making free internet calls, we will show you how to use Webcams and Skype to make free internet voice calls to friends and family. We will also demonstrate how you can bring your conversations to life using free video calls, rather than just telling someone you can show them. Video calls are great for keeping in touch with loved ones who no longer live close by.

For more information or to book your place on the course telephone Susie Bird or Joanne Harwood on 01388 772526 or email [email protected]

Durham County Council has launched a county-wide crackdown on a foul habit, and is specifically targeting Bishop’s Town Recreation Ground behind B&Q.Bag it and bin it – any rubbish bin will do! That is the message at the heart of a council clampdown on irresponsible pet owners who allow their dogs to mess in public places and leave it for other people to pick up.The issue of dog mess has been highlighted as a major concern in com-munities across County Durham and the launch signalled the start of a targeted campaign aimed at hot spots in all 14 of the council’s Area Action Part-nership (AAP) zones. The authority is the only major partner in the North East supporting the push, run by Keep Britain Tidy. The central message urges owners to bag and bin dog mess as ‘there’s no such thing as ‘the dog poo fairy’.Durham County Council Cabinet member for Streetscene, Councillor Brian Stephens said, “We are trying to get the message across to irre-sponsible dog owners who don’t pick up after their pets, that dog fouling is not acceptable. “Not only is it unpleasant, it can be dangerous too, particularly for our children. While we have ongoing education and enforcement programmes running on this subject,

Andrea Hodgson, Durham County Council neighbour-hood warden, and Monty at the launch of the campaign.

Launch of county crackdown on dog mess

for a month we will be increasing enforcement patrols in 14 hot spots, including Bishop’s park, encouraging residents to clean up after their dogs and handing out fines if they don’t.” The council’s Streetscene area manager Ian Hoult said, “Bagging it but then hanging it on a bush or tree does not count, please find a bin, any rubbish bin

will do, and dispose of it properly.” Durham County Council’s civic pride officers are also visiting Etherley Lane School. Ian continued, “We are making them aware they need to take care when playing outside. It is very important from a health perspective as well as from a general citizenship point of view.

A restaurant chain has applied for planning permission to build at St Helen’s, near to the site currently being developed by Sainsbury’s and Bishop Auckland FC.Terrace Hill, who are

running the development, say the Marston’s Inns and Taverns restaurant would be a positive addition to the site. Fast food chain KFC are also looking into building a drive-through on the site.

    Marston’s hope to build restaurant

Hospital parking fees rise by 150%Bosses at Bishop Auckland Hospital have defended increasing parking fees by 150% by stating that the fees have not risen for six years.Although people visiting the hospital currently pay £1 to park, they will now face a charge of £2.50 for

up to two hours. The rise has been condemned as a tax on illness by residents, with Councillor Sam Zair branding the decision as disgraceful, saying, “Once again, the poorly and sick people have been victimised by the trust.”

Sanctuary fundraiserA sixties and seventies night is to be held at Cockton Hill Workingmen’s Club in aid of Kayshill Animal Sanctuary in West Auckland. The event will be held on

Saturday 9th October from 7pm and fancy dress is optional.Tickets costing £6 for adults and £4 for children are available from the sanctuary on 01388 834996.

Shildon’s police team have proven to be some of the toughest bobbies around, after placing first in their heat of the recent ‘It’s a Knockout’ charity compe-tition.Shildon ‘Beat Team Barbarians’ as they were aptly named, were one of sixteen teams of ten who battled it out in the event which featured zany games involving plenty of foam and water, similar to those featured in the 1970s programme. The competition was held at Bishop Auckland Rugby Club on Sunday 26th September, where the cold and windy weather didn’t stop the teams having an enormous amount of fun and raising thousands of pounds for the Butterwick Hospice at Bishop

Auckland. Just some of the teams the ten policemen fought off were Bishop Auckland’s Asda, Lush Hair & Beauty, and even The Bishop Press! They weren’t quite quick enough to become overall winners of the day, however, after managers from the new Sains-bury’s store at St Helens managed to gain more

Honeyman jailed for racial assaultThomas Honeyman, 21 of Wingate, County Durham was jailed on Friday 24th September for four years after trial at Teesside Crown Court. The man battered couple Melville and Tracy Mitchell with a barstool on a night out in a Bishop Auckland pub. He had hurled racial and personal insults at Mrs Mitchell as they sat with friends in The Cumberland Arms Hotel, said Mr Bennett, prosecuting. The court then heard how Mr Mitchell had an argument with Honeyman before returning to his table. The couple were then

knocked to the floor after Honeyman attacked them - bringing down a barstool at speed from above his head. Mr Mitchell suffered from a cut head and his wife injured her hand after she tried to protect herself from the attack, resulting in them both needing treatment at Darlington Memorial Hospital.Honeyman ran outside as customers and staff helped the couple. Police officers found him walking along the street bare-chested and bleeding from a cut to the head, telling officers he had fallen over.Honeyman was released on police bail, during

which time he committed a robbery from a man walking alone outside The Llewellyn pub in Ferryhill, taking £90 from his person.Bryan Russell, defending, said Honeyman admitted that he had gone “spec-tacularly off the rails” in this period last year, but had addressed his problems taking courses whilst in prison on remand to tackle his drink and drug addiction.Honeyman pleaded guilty to charges of racially-aggravated actual bodily harm, assault and unlawful wounding and to robbery. He was sentenced to a total of four years in jail.

Tourism bosses have landed themselves in hot water after claiming that Stan Laurel was born in Bishop Auckland. The ‘Visit County Durham’ brochure states, “Bet you didn’t know that Bishop Auckland was the birthplace of Arthur Stanley Jefferson, better known as Stan Laurel.’

Although Stan was christened in the town and attended King James Grammar School, he was in fact born in Ulverston in Cumbria.Visit County Durham blames an ‘urban myth’ and has apologised for the error, but it claimed that it didn’t have enough money to recall the 50,000 leaflets!

    Tourism bosses make Laurel blunder

Metal thieves damage flood defenceThieves hunting for scrap metal have been blamed for damaging the town’s flood defences. The Environment Agency’s dam which is upstream of Spring Gardens in West Auckland, works by storing water during high river flows, then releasing it slowly. It protects 660 properties in and around

Bishop Auckland from flooding from the River Gaunless. It was fast-tracked by the Environ-ment Agency following the floods in 2000. Metal hinges and catches were stolen from the gate of the dam, causing damage of around £3,000.Agency Operations Delivery Team Leader

Paul Constantine said, “I’m shocked that people would put others in danger to steal hinges which are probably just sold as scrap.“The frustrating thing is that the cost to repair the damage far outweighs the value of the stolen metal, and the bill has to be picked up by the taxpayer.”
