Members of a local running club have joined forces with a local charity to help organise a re-launched running event. The 10k originally took place between 2001 and

2003, but this year the race, which has been organized by Butterwick Hospice fundraiser Julie Nisbet, hopes to attract up to 400 people from around the region.

“The last few years have seen an increase in people taking up running as a hobby, or a way to get fi t. The route is challenging but scenic, and hopefully runners will come along and support the event,” said Julie.The Hamsterley trail race is approximately 10k through the undulating off-road terrain of County Durham’s magnifi cent Hamsterley Forest. Aycliffe Running Club played a huge part in helping map out a new route, and will be present on the day to help with marshalling and registra-tion.Local businesses Driver Hire in Newton Aycliffe and Up and Running in Darlington are also sponsoring the 10K race, which takes place on Sunday, 15th July at 10.30am. Places are limited to 400, so entries are being accepted on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis. Police are cracking down on organised crime after raiding two sites in the Bishop Auckland area.Search warrants were executed on Green Acres Farm near Green Lane and Hostel Farm near Toronto, at around 10am on Wednesday 21st March.Around 30 police offi cers took part in the raids, as well as six offi cers from HM Revenue and Customs.A number of items were seized, including a suspected stolen car, a trailer and a suspicious

white powder.A bomb disposal team was also called after MoD smoke grenades were discovered, and RSPCA offi cers attended Hostel Farm in relation to concerns regarding the welfare of horses.Inspector Martin Peace commented, “This is part of the overriding Operation Sledgehammer against organised crime.“The message is that we cannot have individuals banding together to commit crime or intimidate the local community.”

College manager conquers Kilimanjaro for charityA Bishop Auckland College manager has conquered Mount Kilimanjaro to help raise £75,000 for charity - and inspire the young Duke of Edinburgh volunteers he leads.Rob Richardson, Head of Business Development, has just returned from Tanzania, where he braved temperatures of minus 25 degrees to reach the mountain’s 19,000ft Uhuru Peak.Rob, recently appointed as co-ordinator for the new Durhamgate Duke of Edinburgh programme, said, “Getting to the top of the highest free standing mountain in the world was no easy feat. With tem-peratures on summit night reaching -25°C, it proved to be a difficult challenge during which a number of the group suffered from the effects of high altitude related conditions and exhaustion.” The climb was in aid of Rob’s favourite charity, Help for Heroes, and the group of 23 participants were ac-companied by two soldiers who were part of the Help for Heroes Battle Back programme, which aims to get wounded soldiers back on their feet after suffering injury in service. The expedition was Rob’s third challenge for the charity since 2010, having previously completed a 350-mile cycle ride across

Petition will �ght for town centre M&SA former Marks and Spencer employee is leading a petition to encourage the store to remain at its current town centre site.Christine Atkinson, who worked at the Bishop Auckland branch for 30 years, hopes the petition will show the business how important it is to local residents.Christine decided to take action after rumours began circulating that M&S will be moving to a unit at the new retail site in St Helen Auckland, which is currently under construction. Store bosses have neither confirmed or

denied this, although they recently extended their lease at the town centre store until 2013.Christine commented, “I have been told there is not enough footfall for Marks and Spencer. They will not tell me if they are planning to move, but it is really important that the store stays where it is.“Once we have collected the signatures, I will be taking it to the head office.“It would be such a shame if we lost it.”Bishop Auckland Town Council will also write to the store expressing their wish for it to remain where it is.

Paths to close to make way for communal gardenTwo paths in St Mary’s Close on Woodhouse Estate are to close in order to make way for a communal garden for elderly residents.The project was given the go ahead by Durham

County Council’s highways committee after almost three years.On receiving criticism about the plans, Woodhouse Close County Councillor John Lethbridge commented,

“The people on the ground, who live there, are saying ‘please do this.’“We’re talking about improving St Mary’s Close and something we can be proud of.”

Hands dipped into pockets to support the customary ‘Heads and Tails’, followed by an auction which was supported by Appleby Golf Club, Slaley Hall and Sunderland FC, who sent along a Jack Colback shirt signed by the 1st team.A spokeseperson for the club said, “Gary certainly won’t forget his big 50th, especially in the knowledge that his celebrations raised £1,100 for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and is a real spring board for future fundraising events in the golf clubs calendar.”

Kate battled against hundreds of auditionees to secure a spot in the live shows. One of the region’s best known charity fundraisers has received a top honour from the chairman of Durham County Council.Dedication is the name of the game for Sue Snowdon and it has seen her rewarded with the Chairman’s Medal.Sue’s work for Butterwick Hospice and the Bishop Auckland Town Centre Forum has resulted in some of the most successful events the area has seen and a legacy that continues today – such as the Bishop Auckland Food Festival.Sue has arranged fun runs

in Hamsterley Forest, Santa Trails at Low Barnes Nature Reserve, football tournaments, Proms in the Park at Raby Castle, murder mystery evenings – the list goes on.And Sue has that wonderful ability to get people to help – and usually they do it free of charge.One such occasion was the day after one of the proms in the park at Raby Castle. The weather had been dreadful and when it was time for the stage to be dismantled it had sunk into so much mud that it wasn’t going anywhere. Sue asked the army to

help and they did - it was airlifted out!In 2007, Sue became Deputy Lord Lieutenant of County Durham – and she is also Justice of the Peace.Councillor Linda Marshall, Vice Chairman of Durham County Council, paid tribute to Sue when presenting her with her award, when she said, “This is indeed richly deserved. You are a superb role model. I would like to recognise the amazing contribution you have made over the years in voluntary and community service.”

Food Festival gets taste buds going onlineThis year’s Bishop Auckland Food Festival is tantalising taste buds by encouraging Durham foodies to swap and share their favourite recipes – some local to Durham – on the festival’s own Facebook fan page.With just three weeks to go before the festival returns, food lovers from all over Durham are posting their favourite recipes and pictures of their home-made fare and kitchen creations on the social networking site. The closing date for entries is 9th April, after which all recipes will be voted for on Facebook by the festival community. Attempted theftsBetween 9pm on Monday 19th March and 4.10pm on Tuesday 20th March, someone removed the cover from a secure black Harley Davidson motorcycle, which was parked at Crawford Close in Bishop Auckland. There was then an attempt to steal the motorcycle by removing the wires from the ignition barrel with an unknown implement. The theft attempt failed, but

there was a considerable amount of damage to the ignition barrel. Matthew Bradley, aged 14 from Escomb Road in Bishop Auckland, competed at the Northumberland and Durham County Swimming Cham-pionships at the Sunderland Aquatics Centre on the 17th and 18th of March. This was the fi rst time the annual champion-ships had been held at the Sunderland 50 metre venue. The event attracted hundreds of swimmers aged between 9 and 14 years from as far South as Richmondale and as far North as Alnwick. Matthew competed in ten races involving seven different events over the weekend against stiff competition from many of the bigger swimming clubs in the area.He was positioned fourth in the 200 metres Individual Medley and 100 metres Backstroke. His biggest achievement, however, was retaining his champion status in the 100 metres and 200 metres breaststroke. Matthew won both events taking gold medals on the Saturday morning and afternoon. Matthew had won the events in 2011 at the 25 metre venue in Middlesbrough setting new records for the two events at County level. Matthew also achieved personal best times in fi ve of the seven events that he competed in. He took overall 3rd place in the boys 14 year age group. Matthew swims with Sedgefi eld 75 ASC and has competed at county, regional and national levels since the age of 9.

Bishop now had the measure of Whitby, who could not contain Bishop's fl owing rugby, and the next three tries came in quick succession scored by hooker Leigh Cox, winger James Greathead and second row Jack Tindle, all converted by Tombling to

take the half time score to 28-0.With the bonus point secured, Bishop were looking to kick on and score more points, however Whitby - to their credit - defended better and it wasn't until ten minutes into the second half that stand-off Tombling saw a gap and ran through to score under the posts, which he then converted 35-0. The next try came from great work in the

line out, where second row Paul Fletcher ripped the ball from his opposite number and set up a maul which offl oaded to fl anker Michael Beach, who ran 30 metres to score under the posts - 42-0. Bishop's next score came from a penalty, which Tombling converted to take his tally from the game to 22 points. Whitby then stemmed the fl ow of tries for a short while but never really offered anything in

attack, and Bishop were on the counter attack moving the ball smoothly through their backs for full-back Zac Hole to score in the corner. With the conversion missed, Bishop fi nished the game 50-0.This was a confi dence boosting performance against limited opposition, but Bishop played well and never let Whitby have a sniff of the game.Final score, Bishop Auckland 1st 50 - Whitby 0.
