Sunday rail link savedRail chiefs and council officials reached an un-derstanding last week to preserve the future of a Sunday rail service between Bishop Auckland and Darlington. It was feared the service could be axed altogether when Darlington Borough Council withdrew their funding from the Northern Rail Service, with subsidies from Durham County Council also due to expire this year. However officials at Northern Rail and the County Council have thrashed out a deal that will see the service continue indefinitely.Michael O’Neill, who helped start the ‘Save Our Sunday Service’ campaign in Bishop Auckland said, “The public has stood up over this issue and forced decision makers to get their heads together and come up with an
agreement.” Hundreds of people signed a petition, lobbying that poorer and vulnerable residents would be isolated if the service was removed. “We have always known that it was a well used service and I would urge people to keep on using it. To lose it would have been devastating for the town” continued Mr O’Neill.Head of transport for Durham County Council Adrian White told how they worked closely with Northern Rail to figure out funding to save the service. “Growth in passenger revenue has allowed us to reduce our contribution. “These savings were identified in line with the council’s medium term financial plan,” he surmised and the service looks like it will continue to be well supported for many years to come.
Tony Blair shows his support for ‘Laurel Museum’
The project to save the building has been backed by Tony Blair, as well as Stan Laurel’s daughter.
A project to save the building in which Stan Laurel went to school has been backed by Tony Blair. The former Prime Minister
has sent a signed copy of his autobiography to the Stan Laurel Community Building Group, in the hopes that they will auction it off to
raise funds. They also received an email from Stan Laurel’s daughter, 83 year-old Ms Laurel-Hawes, who wishes to be informed of the progress they make. The group is working towards buying the former Old Boys Grammar School, situated between Bishop Auckland Cricket Club and King James I Community Arts College, in order to turn it into a museum and arts centre. The old Geography block has stood vacant since March 2007 when it was targeted by arsonists. The fire destroyed the building’s roof, spire and most of the second floor, leaving residents fearing the local landmark might have to be demolished. However the group intends to restore the building and ‘bring it back’ to the community.Anyone interested in becoming involved in the project can visit stanlau-relmuseumbishopauck-land.yolasite.com.

Youngsters send a message to the future
Youngsters from Woodhouse Community Primary School have sent a message to the future by burying a time capsule in the grounds of the recently opened March Hare pub and restaurant in Bishop Auckland.Newspapers, letters,
drawings, photographs and other items that are important to the children were all included in the pupils’ time capsule. They also included a picture of the school logo and the children wrote about what they thought the future will be like. A plaque was
also put up outside the building with the date of when the capsule was buried (29.9.11).The Deputy Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Councillor Charlie Kay, was also in attendance to assist the children in the time capsule burial.

Closed pub could re-open under new nameThe Beehive Pub on Kingsway could re-open under a new name if Durham County Council pass the plans.Shaun Bradford has submitted an application
for a licence to open The Vibe in the building. The pub was closed in April after Anthony Hancock from the town was killed outside of the premises. The tragedy
followed a series of 17 assaults in and around the bar since January 2009, as well as the death of another Bishop Auckland man, Stephen Wilson, who was killed in 2009.

At Bishop Barrington School in Bishop Auckland, modern foreign languages have created a new level of interest. Strategic Leader of Languages, Karen Fletcher has organised a series of events around European Day of Languages on Monday 26th September. Many celebrities can speak more than one language and Bishop Barrington staff dressed up as famous people and displayed their names, the exact languages that they speak and a quotation on a badge.A competition was organised for Key Stage three students to find out all of the information on

each staff member. They filled in a matrix and the winners of each year group, decided by the first correct form submitted, received a voucher for iTunes, clothes or books. Students were also awarded Vivo Miles, a system for rewards whereby students are given credits via the internet to spend in various shops.Karen Fletcher said, “The day has been a huge success. The aim of raising the profile of both European languages as well as their culture has really hit home and students have used a fun activity to explore the importance of languages in today’s global society.”
Make time to help save a life this AutumnPlatelets are the vital blood clotting component of blood but they only have a five day shelf life. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is urging blood donors to brave the Autumn weather and falling leaves to give blood and save a life.October can see the start of the colds and flu season which can mean existing donors are unable to donate whilst they are unwell. With only four per cent of the eligible population giving blood regularly it is important that others come forward to donate blood if they are able to do so.Darren Bowen, said, “For many, October can be a quieter time of the year and with the dark nights drawing in it can be tempting to stay indoors.
We are urging donors to come forward this month to help maintain blood stocks.“If you are generally in good health you could po-tentially help to save up to three lives with every donation you give. Colds and flu can have a knock-on effect with blood stocks, this is why we need people to act now to help save and improve patients lives across England and North Wales.” Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia. Giving blood can dramatically improve or save the lives of those in need of blood transfusions, in fact a single donation
can be broken into three component parts (red cells, plasma and platelets) which means that one donation can potentially save or improve the lives of up to three people.Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. A blood donation session will take place at The Scout Centre on Kingsway on Thursday 20th October between 2.30pm and 3.45pm and again between 4.30pm and 7pm.For more information or to book an appointment, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

The District Judge at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court spoke of how heroin addiction causes problems with family rela-tionships, before imposing a 2 year restraining order upon Paul Andrew Hodges, conditions of which mean that he must not make contact with his sister or his mother. The 32 year-old, of Proudfoot Drive, Bishop Auckland, pleaded guilty
Restraining orderto pursuing a course of conduct which amounted to harassment earlier this month, despite having received an harassment warning notice. The court heard that Hodges lives close by his mother and sister but was looking to move to the Durham area. As well as the restraining order, Hodges was handed a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £40 costs.

It's all over now by John Phelan
Bishop Auckland Cricket Club have finally had to resign themselves to the fact that the 1st team will be playing in Division 1 of the Darlington Building Society N.Y.S.D. League next season, after relegation from the Premier League was confirmed on Saturday September 17th - even though they beat Barnard Castle at Kingsway in their final match. To their credit the team, led by skipper Phil Holdsworth and coach Dan Conway, were up at the crack of dawn to prepare the ground ahead of a bad weather forecast. Unfor-tunately for them fellow strugglers Marske won by 6 wickets which put them 12 points ahead of Bishop, who were left second off bottom of the table. At Kingsway the visitors batted first but they were soon on the back foot after James Robinson removed former Bishop Auckland professional Gary Pratt for 5 and then fellow opener Sutton for 14. Former Bishop Auckland skipper Ben Usher steadied the ship with 37 runs, but when he was caught by Richard Hawthorne off the bowling of Dan Conway that was more or less the end of the Barnard Castle resistance and they closed on 102. James Robinson took 4-51, Phil Holdsworth 3-21, Dan Conway 2-29 and Richard Hawthorne 1-0.Bishop Auckland too lost early wickets, Matthew Cowling falling for 2 and Ryan Nicholson for 5, both caught by Hesp off Borrowdale. However, from a dodgy 16-2, skipper
Phil Holdsworth and Craig George gradually repaired the situation, although there was some controver-sy in the 18th over when Holdsworth appeared to edge a catch to Pratt at slip off spinner Finch. From the boundary the ball appeared to carry to Pratt and Holdsworth initially started to walk off but was brought back as it was deemed not to have carried. George, who has matured into a confident and steady runscorer this season, started to open his shoulders and hit Toulson for a 4 and a 6 off con-secutive deliveries. Just when it seemed that he would complete a well deserved half century the Bishop connection of Pratt and Usher combined to dismiss him on 49, Usher taking the catch off Pratt's bowling. It was left to Phil Holdsworth 31 not out and Richard Hawthorne 8 not out to finish the job.It is not a complete disaster for Bishop Auckland to lose their Premier League status, they are a com-paritively young team, and hopefully players like Craig George, James Robinson, Ben Thompson, Callum and Scott Oldfield will be around for many years to come. With the Junior set up second to none they will always have a steady supply of young cricketers coming through the ranks. One to keep an eye on is spinner Liam Bell who has returned some excellent figures in the 3rd team while Mark Little has turned in some very good all-round performances for the 3rd's.
