optioned from St. Louis on June 7, hitting .429 (12-28) with four home runs, 10 runs scored, 11 RBI, a triple and four walks, for a .529 on base percent-age and a .929 slugging percentage. He also played three games at center field, and he threw out a runner at the plate in his 17th inning played at the position since his freshman year of college. In his very first game, he opened the game with a home run and hit a walk-off grand slam, and he also had a two-homer game at Nashville on June 14. He was recalled by St. Louis June 17.

BACK-TO-BACK BLANKINGS: With a 2-0 win on June 11 and a 5-0 victory on June 12, Memphis strung together back-to-back shutout wins for the first time since May 24-25, 2013 against Round Rock. The Redbirds allowed just eight hits in the two games, which included Jerome Williams’ first complete game since 2012 and the fewest hits allowed (2) when coupled with innings pitched (8.0) in Deck Mc-Guire’s professional career.

JEROME WILLIAMS WIPES OUT THE SKY SOX: In his second start with the Redbirds on June 11 against Colorado Springs, Jerome Williams threw a complete game, five-hit shutout in a 2-0 Memphis victory. The 17-year veteran needed just 105 pitches to finish his first complete game since May 1, 2012, when he threw a complete game, three-hit shutout with the Los Angeles Angels against the Minnesota Twins. It was the first complete game shutout by a Redbird since Tim Cooney on June 2, 2015 against Las Ve-gas. At one point from the end of the third through two outs in the eighth, Williams retired 15-straight Colorado Springs hitters. He finished the game set-ting down 19 of the final 21 Sky Sox he faced.

REDBIRDS SEE MAJOR LEAGUE EXPERIENCE RISE: Prior to May 19, when Tommy Pham was optioned to Memphis, the Redbirds had six players on their roster with a combined 293 major league games (1.8 seasons). Pham, Kolten Wong, Michael McKenry and Jerome Williams, all of whom played in Mem-phis between May 19 and June 16, had a combined 936 major league games (5.8 seasons) entering their time in Memphis.

VALERA APPEARS IN TRIPLE-A: Breyvic Valera made his Triple-A debut on June 6 after being trans-ferred from Springfield (AA) earlier in the day when Alex Mejia went on the Disabled List. Valera was a defensive replacement in the seventh inning of a 6-2 Memphis win, and he went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and stole a base.

WASHINGTON REWARDED FOR MAY: David Wash-ington was named the St. Louis Cardinals’ Minor League Player of the Month for May after hitting .287 (29-101) with 11 home runs, which co-lead all of minor league baseball during the month, and 25 RBI in 29 games between Double-A Springfield and Memphis. Washington hit .309 with nine home runs and 21 runs batted in over 24 games after arriving in Memphis from Springfield on May 5. He also had a 12-game hitting streak from May 8-21, which was the second-longest active streak in the Pacific Coast League at the time it was snapped.

TOP PROSPECT ALEX REYES DEBUTS: Alex Reyes, the top-ranked prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals or-

ganization and seventh-ranked in all of Major League Baseball, pitched four innings and struck out eight in his season and Triple-A debut May 22. Reyes gave up two hits and walked three in his four innings of work in his first outing following a 50-game suspension. He allowed baserunners in each of the first three in-nings, including loading the bases in the second, but he struck out the final batter of the inning each time to escape without allowing a run. His eight strikeouts matched Arturo Reyes for the most by a Redbird starter in a game this season. Reyes threw 85 pitches and 48 for strikes.

WASHINGTON’S DOZEN: David Washington had a 12-game hitting streak from May 8-21, which cov-ered his first 14 games played at the Triple-A level. He hit .340 with four home runs during the streak (17-50), which was the second-longest active streak in the PCL at the time it ended and the longest by a Redbird this season.

LEFTY LITTRELL IS A REDBIRD: Left-hander Corey Littrell made his Triple-A debut with a scoreless ninth inning on May 14 against Sacramento after being transferred from Double-A Springfield earlier that day.

KIEKHEFER GETS THE CALL: Left-hander Dean Kiekhefer was recalled by St. Louis on May 14 after making 11 appearances and pitching 13.1 innings with 12 hits and two runs allowed for the Redbirds to start the season. Lefties were hitting just .105 against him, and at the time of his call-up he was one of two relief pitchers in the PCL not to issue a walk. He was optioned to Memphis June 19.

TILSON HITS IN 10-STRAIGHT: Charlie Tilson had a 10-game hitting streak from April 20-May 4, the longest by a Redbird since Greg Garcia’s 10-gamer from June 1-11, 2015. The Triple-A rookie hit .333 (14-42) during the streak, which was the second-longest active streak in the league at the time it was snapped on May 4 against Omaha.

EXTRA-BASE STRETCH: Memphis had at least one extra-base hit in the first 17 games of the season, until only having five singles in the series finale against Round Rock on April 26. Only Round Rock and Sacramento had equal streaks at the time Mem-phis’ ended. The Redbirds then had an extra-base hit in 26-straight games from May 8-June 3 before go-ing without one in back-to-back games June 4 and 5.

SATURDAY NIGHT SELLOUT: 10,171 fans packed AutoZone Park on April 23 for the first regular-season sellout since the renovations to the ballpark leading into the 2015 season. Those renovations included a state-of-the-art videoboard, LED ribbon board displays and additional premium seating and all-inclusive options for fans, in addition to a playing field replacement.

JEREMY HEFNER RETURNS: In his first appearance since August 6, 2014, after a second Tommy John surgery required him to miss the 2015 season, Jere-my Hefner allowed just one hit in 5.0 innings of work for his first outing of at least five innings and only one hit in his last 88 starts.

OFFSEASON OWNERSHIP CHANGE: This spring, principal ownership of the Memphis Redbirds

changed from the St. Louis Cardinals to Peter B. Freund. Freund is President of Trinity Packaging Cor-poration and Trinity Baseball Holdings. Trinity Baseball Holdings also owns the Charleston RiverDogs and the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Cardinals remain a minority owner in the Redbirds. As part of the move, third-year Redbirds General Manager Craig Unger was promoted to President and General Manager.

MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHESTRIPLE-A EXPERIENCE: Five members of the 25-man Opening Day roster played at the Triple-A level elsewhere in 2015, with pitchers John Church (Las Vegas [Mets], Pacific Coast League), Juan Gonzalez (Oklahoma City [Dodgers], Pacific Coast League), Deck McGuire (Oklahoma City [Dodgers], Pacific Coast League) and J.C. Sulbaran (Omaha [Royals], Pacific Coast League), as well as outfielder Carlos Peguero (Round Rock [Rangers], Pacific Coast League; Pawtucket [Red Sox], International League) playing one step from the majors last season.

PROSPECTING: Seven of the top-30 prospects in the Cardinals organization, according to Baseball America, opened the season active in Memphis, including Sam Tuivailala (#11), Charlie Tilson (#13), Anthony Gar-cia (#21), Arturo Reyes (#22), Jacob Wilson (#23), Dean Kiekhefer (#29) and Mike Ohlman (#30). Top prospect Alex Reyes starts on the Restricted List, and number-two and number-five prospects Tim Cooney and Marco Gonzales begin on the Disabled List. The 10 Cardinals prospects on the Opening Day roster are the most in the Pacific Coast League.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: Four Redbirds appeared in the big leagues last season, with pitchers Miguel So-colovich, and Sam Tuivailala and infielder Dean Anna spending time in St. Louis and outfielder Carlos Pegue-ro playing 34 games with the Red Sox and Rangers.

COACHING STAFF: Manager Mike Shildt is in his second season at the helm in the Bluff City and is joined on the Memphis bench by returning pitching coach and former Redbirds pitcher Bryan Eversg-erd (4th season), hitting coach Mark Budaska (9th season), coach Robby Hisert, athletic trainer Rafael Freitas, and strength and conditioning coach Kevin Hyde (2nd season).
