MASON BASKETBALL2017-18 Men’s Basketball Game Notes

2017-18 George Mason University Basketball GoMason.com/@MasonMBB

MEDIA COVERAGETuesday’s game will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network, featuring commentary from Thad Anderson and Pete Gillen. In addition, Bill Rohland will provide live audio through the A-10 Digital Network, with live coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m.

SKINN, KONKOL FACE FAMILIAR FOE ON TUESDAYThe Louisiana Tech coaching staff is filled with George Mason basketball connections. Head coach Eric Konkol served two stints as an assistant under former Mason head coach Jim Larranaga (2002-05, 2007-11) before joining Coach L in Miami for the 2011-12 campaign. He worked with the Patriots on two NCAA teams (2008, 2011) and two NIT-qualifying squads (2004, 2009).

In addition, Louisiana Tech assistant coach Tony Skinn starred for the Patriots at the guard position from 2003-06. He scored 1,079 career points (29th all time at Mason) and is 12th all-time at Mason in 3-point field goals made (125). As a senior during Mason’s Final Four season, Skinn averaged 12.6 points and 2.9 assists. He tallied 14 points and four assists in a Sweet 16 win over Wichita State and added 10 points and five rebounds in the Elite 8 upset of Connecticut. He tied for the team lead with 13 points in the national semifinal loss to eventual national champion Florida.

HISTORY vs. CONFERENCE USA OPPONENTSMason is 28-39 (.418) all time against teams currently in Conference USA. The bulk of those meetings have come against former CAA foe Old Dominion (21-36). The Monarchs left the CAA at the conclusion of 2012-13 and joined Conference USA for the 2013-14 campaign. The two teams then played a home-and-home series in 2013-14 & 2014-15, but have not played since. In addition, Mason’s most common C-USA opponents are Charlotte (3-0) and FIU (2-1).

A LOOK AT THE BULLDOGS (2-0, 0-0 CONFERENCE USA)Louisiana Tech was picked to finish third out of 14 teams in the 2017-18 Conference USA preseason poll. The Bulldogs won their Cancun Challenge openers vs. Southeast Missouri St (96-95) and Montana State (71-58). Sophomore guard Jalen Harris leads the team in scoring (22.0 ppg), shoots 50 percent from the floor and is averaging 6.7 rebounds per contest. TUESDAY’S MATCHUP

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University men’s basketball team (3-1) used a second half surge for the second straight game to earn a 78-73, overtime victory Saturday over Cal State Northridge.

In the team’s final opening round contest of the Cancun Challenge, the Patriots trailed CSUN 41-35 at the half. In the second, Mason allowed CSUN to shoot just 28.6 percent in the second and overcame an 11-point deficit to tie the score up at 67 heading to an extra session. Mason was +5 (12-7) in OT to capture the win.

The Patriots shot just 41 percent for the game but were clutch at the free throw line. After coming into the game shooting 52.7 percent as a team from the charity stripe, Mason was a much-improved 95.0 percent (19-20) against the Matadors.

For the second-straight game, freshman Goanar Mar came up huge for the Green & Gold. He tallied career bests in points (22) and rebounds (11) to record his first double-double of his young career.

A CONTRIBUTOR FROM THE GET-GOFreshman Goanar Mar tallied 11 points (3-4 3pt FG) in his Mason debut vs. Lafayette on Nov. 10. He was the first Mason freshman to post 10+ points in his first game since Luke Hancock notched 11 points against Liberty on Nov. 13, 2009. Mar has posted 10+ points in three of his first four games and is second on the team in field goal percentage (.500). He tallied career bests in points (22) and rebounds (11) vs. CSUN and currently leads the team in scoring average (14.3 ppg).

CANCUN PRESENTS UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITYThe Patriots will participate in the 2017 Cancun Challenge Nov. 21-22 at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Mexico. It marks just the second time Mason has played regular season games outside the United States and its territories in program history. Mason’s only other international contest was an 86-66 victory over Winthrop in the Rogers AT&T NCAA Basketball Showcase in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Dec. 2001. Outside of the Continental U.S., Mason has played in the Chaminade Classic (1989), Puerto Rico Tip-off (2009, 2014), the Paradise Jam (USVI, 2012) and the Diamond Head Classic (2013).

YOUTH MOVEMENTThe Patriots ranked 297th in the nation in Ken Pomeroy’s “experience” stat last season and are equally young in 2017-18. Mason ranks 331st out of 349 Div. I teams in the category this season (1.01 yrs/player). In a survey conducted by NCAA Div. I sports information directors, Mason was listed as one of just 10 programs nationally that returns four or fewer letter winners from the 2016-17 campaign. Mason is without a scholarship senior for the first time since 2004-05. As such, Paulsen has been quoted as saying this is essentially a “two-year season,” as the Patriots will not graduate any players.

IT’S NOT THE SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHTMason set a new program record for rebounds in a season in 2016-17 with 1,370. The Patriots were 13th in the nation in defensive rebounding last season, despite ranking 328th out of 351 Div. I teams in average height. Mason is 307th in average height this season (6’3.8”) and will look to replicate that prowess with similar small lineups likely to be featured.

JUNIOR LEADERSHIPFor the first time in 13 seasons, the Patriot roster this year will feature 0 scholarship seniors. The last time Mason fielded a team without a scholarship senior was the 2004-05 campaign, when the Patriots featured a talented junior class of Lamar Butler, Jai Lewis and Tony Skinn. That trio would lead Mason to the NCAA Final Four the following season in 2005-06. This season, the Green & Gold will be lead by a strong junior duo of Jaire Grayer and Otis Livingston II. Livingston II has started all 70 games in his Mason career, while Grayer has started 68 of 70.

OTIS APPROACHING 1,000Junior Otis Livingston II has posted 924 career points through his first 70 games and is just 76 points away from 1,000. He is on pace to reach the milestone in Mason’s first 10-11 games, which would make him the fastest to hit 1,000 in 18 years (George Evans reached in 60 games in 1999). At that pace, he would be the 12th-fastest in Mason’s 51-year history to reach 1,000 career points.

MASON’S FREE THROW KINGJunior Otis Livingston II ranks first all-time in school history in career free throw percentage (.846) and set the single season free throw percentage mark in 2016-17 (.919, 124-135). He also holds the

school record for most consecutive free throws after converting a streak of 34 in a row at the charity stripe from Nov. 15, 2016-Jan. 4, 2017. He enters 2017-18 ranked in the top-25 of all NCAA Div. I players returning in career free throw percentage.

PAULSEN NAMES 2017-18 TRI-CAPTAINSMason’s returning starting trio of captains Otis Livingston II, junior Jaire Grayer and sophomore Justin Kier combined to start 96 of a possible 101 games last season. Livingston II started all 34 games in 2016-17.

PATRIOTS GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE IN KENNER LEAGUEGeorge Mason student-athletes Otis Livingston II, Jaire Grayer, AJ Wilson and Goanar Mar took part in the annual Kenner League at Georgetown University over the summer to work on their skill sets and gain valuable competitive experience heading into 2017-18. The league features a number of college and professional players from around the DMV area. Livingston II and Wilson were two of seven players to earn all-league accolades, along with Anthony Cowan (Maryland), Kaleb Johnson (Georgetown), Drew Washington (Delaware) and Tre’ Kelley (South Carolina/Turkey) among others.

WELCOME FRESHMENMason welcomes three talented scholarship freshmen to the roster this season. Greg Calixte (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) and Goanar Mar (Mankato, Minn./DeLaSalle) each were part of state championship teams in high school, while Javon Greene (McDonough, Ga./Henry County) led his team to the Georgia AAAA Final Four in 2017.

PATRIOTS LOOK TO REBOUND FROM LOSS OF MOORE (LITERALLY)Last season, senior Marquise Moore put together arguably the best rebounding season by a guard in modern NCAA history. He set Mason’s single season rebounding record (367), tied the NCAA Div. I record for double-doubles by a guard and ranked as the top rebounding guard in the country (10.9 rpg, 8th amongst all players nationally). His prowess helped Mason finish 13th in the nation in defensive rebounding. This season, the Patriots will look to strong rebounding guards Jaire Grayer (5.4 rpg), Justin Kier (4.5 rpg) and Ian Boyd in an increased role (2.5 rpg) to make up for Moore’s production by committee.

PLAYING UP TO THE POWER 5The Patriots will play three non-conference games against Power 5 opponents in 2017-18, with matchups at Louisville (Nov. 12), at Auburn (Dec. 3) and at home vs. Penn State (Dec. 17). Mason has not played three Power 5 teams outside of neutral court preseason tournaments since the 1996-97 campaign, when the Green & Gold hosted Virginia and Colorado and played at Ohio State. In 2015-16, Mason played Ole Miss (W), Oklahoma State (W) and Virginia (L), but all three games were part of the 2015 Charleston Classic.

PATRIOTS SIGN TWO IN EARLY PERIODHead coach Dave Paulsen has announced the signing of guards Jason Douglas-Stanley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Jordan Miller (Middleburg, Va.). The duo will compete for the Patriots beginning in fall 2018. Douglas Stanley is 6-2 and plays for Mount Vernon High School in New York, where he played for three seasons with current Mason freshman Greg Calixte. Miller competes for nearby Loudoun Valley High School and was named the Virginia 4A Player of the Year in 2017.

MASON FRESHMAN SCORING AVERAGES (Last 20 Yrs)AN IMPROVED 2016-17 SEASONMason returns three starters from a 2016-17 team that recorded the 13th 20-win season in program annals. Mason went 20-14 on the year. The Green & Gold set a new program record with nine A-10 wins in 2016-17 (previous record was 5). After winning 11 games total and five A-10 contests in 2015-16, Mason ranked as one of the nation’s 20 most improved teams last season.

A STAFF OF CONSISTENCYHead coach Dave Paulsen has enjoyed consistency on his staff for more than a decade of his coaching career. Current Mason assistant coaches Dane Fischer (12 seasons) and Aaron Kelly (11 seasons) have combined to serve 23 years on his staff, with each manning the bench for all seven seasons of Paulsen’s tenure at Bucknell. They also each worked stints at Williams College, in addition to their time in Fairfax. What’s more, current Mason graduate manager Ryan Frazier played for Paulsen for three seasons at Bucknell before joining the Patriots’ staff this summer.

JAIRE UP THERE DURING CONFERENCE PLAYSophomore Jaire Grayer enjoyed a breakout 2016-17 campaign and played a signficant role in Mason’s much improved A-10 season. In conference games, he was third in the A-10 in 3-point percentage (.449, 40-89), t-5th in 3pt FG made/game (2.2) and 14th in rebounding (6.2 rpg). He scored 10+ points in 14 of 18 A-10 games. His offensive rating of 113.7 was 13th best in the A-10, while his effective shooting percentage (.539) was 15th-best in league play. Grayer was efficient on the offensive glass as well and was 16th in the league in offensive rebound percentage.

ROAD WARRIORSThe Patriots finished 2016-17 with a 7-5 road record and won six of their first seven road games for the first time in program history. The seven road wins tied the Patriots for most in the Atlantic 10 and marked the highest total for a Mason team since 2012-13. By comparison, the Patriots were just 2-11 on the road in 2015-16.
