The Riviera Maya has become one of thefavorite destinations in the world formany travelers as well as investors. Ing.Darío Flota Ocampo, Director of theTourism Promotion Board, informedthat among the new great attractionswithin the Riviera Maya is the newdevelopment called Mayakoba, loca-ted only about six miles north of Playa

del Carmen. Within the Mayakoba complex, theopening of the Rosewood Hotel is scheduled for2007 while the Banyan Tree Hotel, La Casa QueCanta and the Viceroy Hotel are due to openduring 2008. The Mandarín Oriental Hotel inPunta Bete will open its doors during this sum-mer just like Valentín Hotel that will open at theend of 2006 in Playa del Secreto. Furthermore,the AMRESORTS hotel chain is about to start theconstruction of a hotel in Playa Maroma.

It is worth mentioning that El Camaleón, theworld-class golf course designed by famousgolfer Greg Norman, and the FairmontMayakoba Hotel, will be hosting Tour PGA2007, the Mayakoba Classic Riviera Maya; anevent of historical importance since it is the firsttime that the TOUR will organize an official event

with a monetary award in Mexico.

Darío Flota also stated that besidesthese interesting investments, theRiviera Maya Tourism PromotionBoard and the Questex Companydecided to establish a strategicalliance presenting the new luxury

tradeshow called Mexico Luxury Travel Expoon June 22-24, 2006. This will be the firsttradeshow ever focusing on the luxury tourismsegment in the Riviera Maya and in Mexico. Theprogram will be arranged to suit travel agentsspecializing in the Premium tourism segment andthere will be a display area including luxurytourism providers, such as hotels, resorts, spas,golf, haciendas, destinations and transportationcompanies. More than 300 luxury travel agents,looking for options for their wealthy clients, willattend this event.

It is almost impossible to describe the magic andcharm of this place in words. The Riviera Maya isa paradise for discovering and exploring theauthentic flavor of the Mayan culture combinedwith an international atmosphere with all thenecessary first-class services for an unforgetta-ble vacation.

La Riviera Maya se ha convertido en unode los destinos favoritos en el mundopara muchos viajeros y también paramuchos inversionistas. El Ing. Darío Flo-ta Ocampo, director del Fideicomisode Promoción informó que dentro delos grandes nuevos atractivos dentrode la Riviera Maya está el nuevo desa-rrollo llamado Mayakoba, ubicado atan sólo 10km al norte de Playa del Carmen.Dentro del complejo de Mayakoba está tambiénprogramada la apertura del Hotel Rosewood parael 2007 además del hotel Banyan Tree, el Hotel LaCasa Que Canta y el Hotel Viceroy para el 2008.Así mismo, el hotel Mandarín Oriental, en PuntaBete abrirá sus puertas en el verano del presenteaño, al igual que el Hotel Valentín que abrirá afinales del 2006 en Playa del Secreto. Por otrolado, la cadena de AMRESORTS está por empezarla construcción de un hotel en Playa Maroma.

Cabe mencionar que El Camaleón, el primercampo de golf diseñado por el afamado GregNorman y el hotel Fairmont Mayakoba, seránanfitriones del TOUR PGA 2007, el MayakobaClassic Riviera Maya, con una importancia históri-ca ya que es la primera vez que el TOUR llevaráacabo un evento oficial con pre-mio monetario en México.

Darío Flota, agregó que ademásde estas interesantes inversiones,el Fideicomiso de la Riviera Mayay la compañía Questex deci-dieron establecer una alianzaestratégica y presentar la nueva feria de lujo llama-da México Luxury Travel Expo del 22-24 dejunio de 2006. Esta será la primera feria especia-lizada para el segmento de turismo de lujo en laRiviera Maya y en México. Se llevará a cabo unprograma para agentes de viajes especializados enel segmento premium y un área de exposición deproveedores de turismo de lujo incluyendo, hote-les, resorts, spas, golf, haciendas, destinos y com-pañías de transportación. A este evento asistiránmás de 300 agentes de viajes de lujo que deseancontar con mayores oportunidades para susclientes adinerados.

torneo de golf en el campo del hotel Mayan Palace. Éste torneo estuvo

dedicado a nuestros clientes y aquellas personas que han colaborado con la

revista durante todo este año. Con un éxito sin precedentes y una excelente

respuesta de los participantes, el torneo estuvo lleno de sorpresas y retos,

además de una zona exclusiva con música y stands de degustación, pero

sobre todo mucha diversión. ¡¡¡Gracias a todos por su apoyo!!!

For the first anniversary of In Playa Magazine we celebrated with a golf

tournament on the course of the Mayan Palace hotel. This tournament was

dedicated to our clients and trusty collaborators. With an unprecedented

success and an excellent response from all participants, the day was full of

surprises and challenges, as well of music, food stands and tons of fun.

• La guayabera es la prenda oficialpara el baile típico de “La Jarana”en Yucatán. Auténtica muestra delmestizaje artístico, la jarana atrae yconquista; ya sea por la cadencia yelegancia de los pasos, por la ale-gría de la música o por la actitudsolemne de los bailadores quezapatean sobre el suelo.

• Por tradición, los hombres vistende mestizos, con pantalón de dril yguayabera de seda o lino, ambosde color blanco. Sobre la cabezallevan un sombrero tejido, en losbolsillos un paliacate rojo y calzanalpargatas yucatecas o sandaliacon tacón.

• The guayabera is the officialclothing of “La Jarana”; a traditionaldance from Yucatán. An authenticdemonstration of the artistic blendingof cultures, the jarana attracts andconquers, be it because of thedecadence and elegance of its steps,the euphoria of its music or thesolemn attitude of the dancers thattap on the floor.

• By tradition, men dress as mesti-zos, with white pants and guaya-beras in linen or silk of the samecolor. They wear a knit hat over theirheads, a red handkerchief in theirpockets and yucatec espadrilles ontheir feet or sandals with heels.

HISTORY OF THE GUAYABERA

This famous item was confec-tioned around the year 1790 inCuba, where the climate isextremely warm, but a long-sleeved shirt with pockets wasnecessary to carry tobacco. Theword ¨guayabera¨ is a distortionof ¨yayabero¨, which means¨those born on the banks of theriver Yayabo¨. It crosses SanctiSpiritus, one of the oldest citiesin Cuba founded by DiegoVelazquez on the XVI century.The guayabera became a repre-sentative clothing item of theCaribbean style and a classic inLatin American fashion. Itsfame has grown so big thatCuba celebrates the guayaberaday every July 1st.

Esta famosa pieza se confeccionóalrededor de 1790 en Cuba,donde el clima es muy caluroso,pero se necesitaba usar unacamisa de manga larga y bolsillosamplios para cargar el tabaco. Lapalabra guayabera es una cor-ruptela de “yayabero”, o sea, elnacido en las márgenes del ríoYayabo, que cruza una de las ciu-dades más antiguas de Cuba,Sancti Spiritus, fundada porDiego Velázquez en el siglo XVI.La guayabera se convirtió en unaprenda representativa del vestircaribeño y en un clásico de lacostura latinoamericana. Su famaha crecido tanto, que cada 1° dejulio se celebra en Cuba el día dela guayabera.

Era una prenda muy cómodapara el hombre de campo,abrochada al frente por botonesde nácar, los mismos botonespara los cuatro bolsillos y refor-zando los puños, con los ladosabiertos para facilitar la colo-cación del machete a un lado y elcuchillo al otro, por eso en muypoco tiempo los campesinos dela comarca empezaron a usarla.

Las primeras guayaberas en con-feccionarse se semejaban a uncamisón español de mangaslargas sin plisado, con tres bolsil-los: dos abajo y uno arriba. Lospobres la portaban como partede sus disfraces en los festejospopulares. Luego evolucionóhasta adquirir cuello alto, elplisado en la parte delantera, for-mado por una banda a cadalado, hasta adicionársele losbotones que remataban lostriángulos de los bolsillos y losyugos.

A short time after, theChinese bombarded the mar-ket with cheap imitationsmade in Taiwan. Locals could-n’t compete with them,causing many fabrics to slowlyshut down. The few that sur-vived continued assemblingquality guayaberas and ad-ding new items to theircollection-children clothing,uniforms, casuals, etc. At thesame time the Chinese burstinto the market, Mexicanpresident Luis EcheverríaAlvarez, who was a fan ofguayaberas, ended his six-year presidency.

The guayabera has not onlyextended throughout the

De una u otra forma la guaya-bera ha rebasado muchas etapas,contextos políticos, económicos,clases sociales y etapas históricas.Es por eso que continúa su vigen-cia en todo el mundo, llevandocon orgullo el sello caribeño, lati-no, de campo, que persiste ennuestros días.

According to the GrandIllustrated Encyclopedia fromSelecciones of the Reader´sDigest, the guayabera isdefined as a ¨type of smalljacket or shirt for men, madeof loose and light materialand worn over the pants¨.

There have been many variousitems designed taking theoriginal guayabera as inspira-tion such as cutting thesleeves, to women’s dresses,artistic pants sets, shirts withzippers, guayaberas made oflinen, polyester, Irish thread,rayon, cotton, denim, and arange of colors such as blackand cream.

Pardo Llada states in his dic-tionary that the ¨authenticguayabera-white or cream-must have a strong neck andlong sleeves with no adorn-ment other than verticalpleats between the pockets¨.

THE GUAYABERA IN YUCATAN

Up until the late 1800´s theguayabera was a vestment forhigh class Yucatecos thatcould buy them in the famousstore “El Encanto” duringtheir frequent trips to Cuba.

When Castro took control ofthe island in the sixties thingsturned around and variousYucatan businessmen decidedto meet the demand by fabri-cating guayaberas them-selves. Since the Sixties to1985 their popularity grewlocally, nationally and world-wide creating an increasein the number of guayabe-ra factories.

Según el Gran DiccionarioEnciclopédico Ilustrado de Selec-ciones del Reader’s Digest, laguayabera está definida como“una especie de chaquetilla o ca-misa de hombre, suelta y de telaligera, cuyas faldas se suelen lle-var por encima del pantalón”.

De la Guayabera original haninventado notables variantes,además de cortarles las mangas,se han hecho vestidos de muje-res, juegos de pantalones, queson verdaderas joyas de arte, conmangas tres cuartos, otras concremalleras (zippers), de lino, depoliéster, de hilo de Irlanda, derayón, algodón, mezclilla, y todoslos colores como el hacendado(crema) y el negro.

Pero dice Pardo Llada en su dic-cionario que la “auténticaGuayabera —blanca o crema—debe ser de cuello duro y man-gas largas. Sin otro adorno queunas alforzas verticales entre losbolsillos”.

LA GUAYABERA EN YUCATÁN

Hacia finales de 1800, la guaya-bera era la ropa de los Yucatecosde clase alta, los que la compra-ban en sus frecuentes viajes aCuba en la famosa tienda “ElEncanto”.

EL EQUIPO DE INVESTIGADORES DE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Y GRUPO VÍA DELPHI

National Geographic eligió a la empresa Mexicana Grupo Via Delphi para grabarun programa especial dedicado a la calidad de vida de los delfines que habitanen áreas naturales delimitadas. Esto debido al reconocimiento a nivel mundialque tiene el grupo en programas de investigación Biológica de Mamíferos Acuá-ticos. El programa se transmitirá en el mes de Junio, a nivel Internacional.

Naional Geographic chose the Mexican enterprise Grupo Via Delphi as locationto shoot a special program dedicated to the quality of life of dolphins that livein closed-off natural areas. They were chosen thanks to the world-wide recog-nition this group has earned for their aquatic mammals biological research pro-grams. This show will air internationally National Geographic on July.

Joakim Harlin, especialista enrecursos hidráulicos del Programade las Naciones Unidas y coordi-nador de la sesión enmarcada enel tema Agua para el Crecimientoy el Desarrollo comentó por suparte “puedo ver claramente lavinculación que están (Xel-Há)haciendo al monitorear el acuí-fero subterráneo vinculando conaplicaciones científicas, creo que esmuy importante lo que estánhaciendo porque si no tenemos labase de conocimiento de cómofluye el agua, nunca podremosplanear y desarrollar así comorealizar las inversiones para elevarel bienestar de la gente y la integri-dad del ambiente.”
