GAVIN STEPS TO THE FORE ON OFFENSE » One season after managing one touch in eight games, Florida State sophomore WR Keith Gavin is

clearly going to have a more prominent role in the Seminoles’ offense. At least that’s the takeaway following the season opener.

» Making his first start, Gavin caught seven passes for 50 yards, including a 9-yard gain on the first drive for his first career reception.

» Gavin also logged his first career rush, gaining 6 yards on a double-reverse. » The Wakulla High standout also returned two kickoffs for 20 yards. » Gavin finished with 10 touches for 76 all-purpose yards, eclipsing his previous high of 66 yards

which came in FSU’s Orange Bowl win over Michigan on a kickoff return.

TATE CONTINUES BIG-PLAY PENCHANT » Junior WR Auden Tate established himself as a big-play performer during the 2016 season, when he

caught 25 passes for 409 yards and six touchdowns. Tate isn’t resting on those laurels. » Tate caught two passes for 41 yards, both of which came on FSU’s second-quarter TD drive. » After reeling in a 38-yard pass from Deondre Francois, just 1-yard off his career long catch, he

hauled in a 3-yard scoring bullet from him for a 7-3 lead. » With 27 career receptions for 450 yards, Tate’s career average is 16.7 yards per catch. » His seven career TDs on 27 receptions equates to one TD per every 3.9 catches.

NOLES AMONG NATION’S BEST IN RED ZONE » Florida State led the country in red zone scoring percentage again in 2016, converting 55 of 57

attempts for a 96.5 scoring percentage. » It was the highest percentage by a college football team since FSU converted 97.3 percent of its

red zone attempts (71-73) in 2013. » During Jimbo Fisher’s tenure as a head coach, the Seminoles are converting 91.5 percent (386-422)

of their red zone trips - the best mark in the country since 2010.

BLACKMAN TAKES THE REIGNS AT QB » True freshman James Blackman will be the fifth different player to make his first career start at

quarterback since Jimbo Fisher became head coach in 2010, and each of the previous four have produced spectacular results.

» First-time starters at QB are 3-1 under Fisher and are averaging 354 yards per game, with 11 total touchdowns and just three interceptions.

» Blackman is also the first true freshman to start at QB for FSU since Chip Ferguson in 1985.Quarterbacks Making First Career Start Under Jimbo Fisher (since 2010):

DEFENSE HOLDS STRONG VS. ALABAMA » Despite absorbing a 24-7 defeat to No. 1 Alabama in the season-opening Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Week

1, Florida State’s defense proved it could be one of the nation’s stingiest units. » Alabama sophomore quarterback and Heisman hopeful Jalen Hurts was held in check for most of

the evening, going 10-of-18 for 96 yards with one touchdown. Hurts was limited downfield, going just 2-of-6 on throws that were 10+ yards.

» The Tide only had one wideout record a reception in junior Calvin Ridley (7 catches, 82 yards, 1 TD). » Of Alabama’s 13 offensive drives, it was forced into four three-and-outs and had three nega-

tive-yardage drives. » Alabama recorded 13 first downs and went just 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) on third down. » FSU’s defense put up these impressive numbers despite Alabama having an average starting field

position at its own 45-yard line.

BIG GAME JAMES » Redshirt sophomore free safety Derwin James’ return was noticeable vs. Alabama, being used in a

variety of ways off the edge and in pass coverage. » Returning from an 11-game absence after a season-ending injury in 2016, the Haines City, Fla.,

native stuffed the stat sheet with six tackles and a 1/2 sack. James led a secondary unit that pre-vented the Tide from generating any type of rhythm through the air, earning ACC DB of the Week.

THOMAS COMES BACK STRONG » Matthew Thomas limited Alabama’s offense with a game-high 10 tackles. » Thomas has led or tied for the most tackles in each of the past three games. » In last season’s Orange Bowl win vs. Michigan, Thomas racked up a career-high 15 tackles, and he

also tied for the team lead with seven stops in a 31-13 win over Florida on Nov. 26, 2016. » All 10 of his tackles came on rush plays, with two being on quarterback Jalen Hurts. Thomas had

two tackles for no gain, and was involved on three straight stops against Tide tailbacks Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough on Alabama’s last drive in the fourth quarter.

NO SWEAT » Junior defensive end Josh Sweat highlighted a strong performance for FSU’s defense in its season

opener with five tackles, including one sack for a seven-yard loss. He was named the ACC defen-sive lineman of the week.

» Sweat, who continues to emerge as one of the better edge rushers in the ACC, now has 10.5 career sacks. He looks to build off a seven-sack campaign as a sophomore in 2016.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP » Florida State had seven players named to the Senior Bowl Watch List in August. » All seven are members of Charles Kelly’s defense - defensive backs Nate Andrews, Ermon Lane, and

Trey Marshall; linebackers Ro’Derrick Hoskins, Jacob Pugh, and Matthew Thomas; and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi.

» Entering the season, the FSU defense returns players that have combined to make 183 career starts. Nnadi (25), Andrews (21) and Josh Sweat (21) have all started over 20 games in their careers.

» Andrews, Hoskins and Thomas were all members of Florida State’s 2013 National Championship team and are looking to become the first players in school history with two national champion-ships.

LAST TIME OUT VS. NC STATE » FSU held the Wolfpack scoreless in the fourth quarter, and FSU overcame a 10-point second-half

deficit to win 24-20 in 2016. Tarvarus McFadden had his seventh of eight interceptions on the season.

» Ermon Lane tallied a career-high 10 tackles, and DeMarcus Walker added two sacks. » A.J. Westbrook had a career-high three pass breakups.

NATIONAL HONORS

16The number of games under head coach Jimbo Fisher in which Florida State has allowed under 100 passing yards. Of the 16 games, Alabama’s 96 yards through the air marked the 10th game that a Power Five school has thrown for less than 100 yards vs. the Seminoles under Fisher.

On kickoffs, he had 57 touchbacks on 90 kicks, an average of 64.1 yards which ranked No. 1 in the ACC and No. 9 in the nation. Tyler kicked a 53-yard field goal on his first career attempt.

NOLES OWN LONGEST PAT STREAK IN HISTORY » Ricky Aguayo has made 52 of 53 career PAT’s (.981). Before having his final PAT attempt of 2016

blocked in the Orange Bowl against No. 6 Michigan, Aguayo made the first 51 PATs of his career. » Florida State owns the NCAA record for consecutive extra points made with 302. FSU broke the

previous record of 263 (Syracuse, 1978-89) against USF on Sept. 24, 2016. Michigan at 293 is the longest active streak.

» Dustin Hopkins made his final 50 PATs in 2012 and three-time All-American Roberto Aguayo, Ricky’s older brother, was 198-for-198 from 2013-15. Ricky Aguayo was 51-for-52 and Logan Tyler was 3-for-3 last year.

» The Aguayo brothers have combined to make 250 of 251 (.996) career PATs.

BURNS SHINES ON SPECIAL TEAMS, TOO » In addition to his 9.5 sacks, the most for a freshman in 2016, sophomore defensive end Brian

Burns was the first FSU player with a blocked punt since head coach Jimbo Fisher’s first game at FSU in 2010 (Chris Thompson vs. Samford).

» Burns’ block against Syracuse was part of a five tackle, 2.5-sack game against the Orange. FISHER NAMES THREE RETURNERS » Florida State is tasked with replacing its main kickoff and punt return men in 2016. Kermit

Whitfield set the FSU records for career kickoff return yards (2,386) and returns (94), while Bobo Wilson was FSU’s return man for the first half of 2016 before suffering a season-ending injury.

» In 2017, wide receiver Keith Gavin and defensive back Derwin James are expected to field the majority of kickoffs. James has never returned a kick at FSU, while Gavin has returned just three - a 66-yarder in his first touch as a Seminole in the final minutes of the 2016 Orange Bowl that led to FSU’s 33-32 win over the No. 6 Wolverines and a pair of 10-yard returns in the 2017 season opener vs. Alabama.

» On punt returns, defensive back Tarvarus McFadden has been named the go-to return man. McFad-den has no punt returns and just one kick return in his career, a 26-yard return as a freshman in 2015.

OF NOTE... » Logan Tyler’s 53-yard field goal against Boston College in 2016 was the first attempt of his career.

It was FSU’s longest field goal of the 2016 season. The Seminoles have not had a longer made field goal since Dustin Hopkins’ 56-yarder in 2012.

» Keith Gavin’s 66-yard kickoff return in the Orange Bowl against Michigan was FSU’s longest since Kermit Whitfield’s 100-yard return touchdown against Auburn in the 2013 BCS Championship.

» Ricky Aguayo was named the Lou Groza ‘Star of the Week’ after his 6-for-6 game against Ole Miss in the season opener in 2016. In addition to setting the FSU record for field goals in a game, Aguayo set the national record for field goals in a debut and set the record for points in a game by a kicker at Florida State (21), breaking his brother Roberto’s record of 19 against Wake Forest in 2014.

» Bobo Wilson’s 89-yard punt return touchdown against Charleston Southern in Week 2 last season was the third-longest in FSU history and the first punt return for a touchdown since Tyler Hunter’s against Duke in 2012.

» Francois was 19-of-33 for 210 yards and a touchdown. He completed passes to seven different receivers, including seven to sophomore Keith Gavin for 50 yards. Gavin did not record a catch as a freshman and made his first start against the Crimson Tide.

» The defense, led by redshirt senior linebacker Matthew Thomas and redshirt sophomore safety Derwin James, held Alabama to 96 passing yards and 173 rushing yards.
