QUICK HITS - WEEK FIVE Week fi ve of the ACC schedule features a pair of games between

unbeaten teams. Duke (4-0) and Miami (2-0) kick off the weekend with a Friday night contest at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The Blue Devils are looking to improve to 5-0 for the fi rst me since 1994, while Miami is playing its fi rst conference game of the

season.

Capping the ACC weekend schedule is a Saturday night matchup between No. 2 Clemson (4-0) and No. 12 Virginia Tech (4-0) at 8 p.m. on ABC. This is a rematch of the 2016 ACC Championship Game, which Clemson claimed with a 42-35 victory. ESPN’s College GameDay will broadcast from the Virginia Tech campus.

QUICK HITS Four ACC teams are ranked this week in the AP Top 25 Poll – No. 2

Clemson, No. 12 Virginia Tech, No. 14 Miami and No. 17 Louisville. NC State, Duke, Florida State and Wake Forest are all receiving votes.

On Saturday, September 30, several schools from the ACC will be wearing special arm patches in honor of the AFCA’s Coach to Cure MD program. This is the 10th year coaches around the country join together to raise funds and awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Fans are encouraged to donate by tex ng “CURE” to 50555 or visi ng Coach-toCureMD.org.

Virginia Tech has hosted ESPN’s College GameDay six mes previously in Blacksburg. Saturday’s game will mark the seventh me the iconic pregame show will air from the campus, but fi rst since Sept. 1, 2007. It will also mark the third me in fi ve weeks this year that GameDay has been at the site of an ACC game. Including this Saturday, GameDay has been at the site of a Virginia Tech game 16 mes and 17 mes for Clemson.

In each of the last nine mee ngs between Clemson and Virginia Tech (da ng back to 1999), at least one of the teams has been na onally ranked, and this year’s contest will mark the sixth me that both have been ranked in the AP’s Top 25. This is Clemson’s fi rst visit to Blacksburg since 2011.

Clemson has won nine consecu ve games since losing to Pi last season. Clemson and USF are ed for the third-longest streak in the country behind Oklahoma (13) and Southern California (12). Miami’s seven-game win streak is the fi h best in the FBS.

Syracuse senior WR Steve Ishmael leads the na on in recep ons per game, averaging 11.3 per contest. The ACC single-season record is 8.0, set in 1998 by NC State’s Torry Holt. Ishmael is one of three ACC receivers ranked among the top seven in recep ons per game. NC State’s Jaylen Samuels (9.5) is third and Virginia Tech’s Cam Phillips (8.5) is seventh.

For the second week in a row, eight quarterbacks from ACC schools started for NFL teams in week two. Four of those signal callers were from NC State, including Philip Rivers (Chargers), Russell Wilson (Sea-hawks), Jacoby Brisse (Colts) and Mike Glennon (Bears). They were joined by Clemson’s Deshaun Watson (Texans), Boston College’s Ma Ryan (Falcons), Virginia Tech’s Tyrod Taylor (Bills) and Florida State’s Jameis Winston (Buccaneers). All eight played in the ACC.

Seven ACC quarterbacks have made their fi rst career starts this season. Boston College’s Anthony Brown, Clemson’s Kelly Bryant, Virginia Tech’s Josh Jackson and Georgia Tech’s TaQuon Marshall all made their fi rst starts in week one. North Car-olina’s Chazz Surra made his fi rst career start in week two vs. Louisville. Florida State true freshman James Blackman and Pi sophomore Ben DiNucci made their fi rst starts on Sept. 23. In addi on, Miami’s Malik Rosier made just the second start of his career in the Hurricanes’ season-opener against Bethune-Cook-man.

COASTAL NOTES Virginia’s 42-23 win over Boise State last Friday night marked the

fi rst home loss for the Broncos to a non-conference team in 17 years and was the worst home loss for Boise State since 2001. It was also the fi rst win for Virginia west of the Mississippi River since 1999 when it beat BYU, 45-40. Virginia is 3-1 for the fi rst me since 2007.

Virginia QB Kurt Benkert is averaging 312.2 yards passing per game. That ranks second in the ACC only to Louisville’s Lamar Jackson. Benkert has thrown 10 TD passes with only one intercep on.

Miami junior running back Mark Walton averaged 18.5 yards per carry in the Hurricanes’ win over Toledo. Walton had 204 yards on just 11 carries, including a 44-yard TD run and an 82-yard non-scoring scam-per. Walton leads the ACC and is third na onally in rushing yards per game, averaging 107.0 per contest.

Duke head coach David Cutcliff e earned his 100th career victory with a 27-17 win over North Carolina. He is the sixth ac ve ACC coach with 100 or more career wins. The others are Georgia Tech’s Paul John-son (179), Miami’s Mark Richt (156), Louisville’s Bobby Petrino (112), Wake Forest’s Dave Clawson (107) and Virginia’s Bronco Mendenhall (104).

Since 2013, David Cutcliff e has guided Duke to a 35-21 record, a .625 winning percentage. The 35 wins are the most victories in a fi ve-year period since the Blue Devils joined the ACC in 1953, a span of 64 years.

Duke senior cornerback Bryon Fields Jr. recorded his fourth career intercep on return for a touchdown when he returned a pick 61 yards for Duke’s fi nal score in a 27-17 win over arch-rival North Carolina. Fields Jr. ed the ACC career mark for intercep on returns for touch-downs set by Virginia’s Randy Neal (1991-94) and matched by Wake Forest’s Alphonso Smith (2005-08).

Pi wide receiver Quadree Henderson recorded his sixth kick return for a touchdown when he returned a punt 80 yards for a score against Georgia Tech. Henderson has returned four kickoff s and two punts for scores.

Virginia Tech has scored in 286 consecu ve games, the fi h-longest current scoring streak in the country. The last me the Hokies were held without a point was Sept. 16, 1995 – 22 years ago. Georgia Tech holds the seventh-longest scoring streak, having notched a point in 252 consecu ve games.

Georgia Tech B-Back KirVonte Benson (196) and QB TaQuon Mar-shall (112) combined to rush for 308 yards and score four touchdowns in Tech’s ACC-opening win over Pi . Marshall and Benson rank second and third in rushing in the ACC.

Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Josh Jackson is seeking to become the fi rst Tech quarterback to win his fi rst fi ve starts since Tyrod Taylor in 2007. Jackson & Jake Fromm (Georgia) are the only FBS freshmen QBs to lead their squads to 4-0 starts in 2017.

Virginia Tech place-kicker Joey Slye now ranks eighth on the ACC career scoring list with 360 points. Slye is just three points behind Pi ’s Chris Blewi for seventh. Slye tallied eight points in the Hokies’ win over Old Dominion, including his 70th career fi eld goal, which es for the fi h-highest total in league history.

Virginia safety Quin Blanding leads all ac ve FBS players in career total tackles with 401. Blanding, currently in his fourth year as a starter, averages 10.03 tackles per game.

Virginia Tech WR Cam Phillips leads the na on with 523 receiving yards on 34 catches, an average of 130.8 yards per game. He is seventh na onally in catches per game, averaging 8.5 per contest.

Since 2008, no team in the FBS has rushed for more yards than Georgia Tech. Employing a spread-op on a ack, the Jackets have run for 36,652 yards during that me, or 20.825 miles. Tech currently leads the na on in rushing off ense, averaging 393.7 yards per game.

Virginia Tech head coach Jus n Fuente sports a .767 winning percentage over the last four years, including his fi nal two seasons at Memphis and his fi rst two at Virginia Tech. Fuente’s teams have posted a 33-10 mark during that me. Last season, he became just the 13th coach to be named ACC Coach of the Year in his fi rst season in the league and only the third to be named Coach of the Year and lead his team to 10 wins.

ATLANTIC NOTES Clemson is the fi h team in ACC history to play three teams ranked

in the AP’s Top 14 in the fi rst fi ve games of a season. The others were Miami in 2009, North Carolina in 2001, Clemson in 1966 and Duke in 1957. Clemson faced No. 13 Auburn in week two, No. 14 Louisville in week three and will play No. 12 Virginia Tech this week.

Clemson has been ranked in the AP poll Top 10 in each of the past 31 weeks. That es Alabama for the longest current streak in the na on.

Florida State, which had spent 89 consecu ve weeks ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, had that streak ended this week a er falling to 0-2 on the season. That streak was the second-longest current streak in the na on only to Alabama (152).

Louisville QB Lamar Jackson has averaged 332.3 total yards per game in his standout career. Jackson ranks second among all ac ve play-ers and his current average would break the ACC career standard set last year by Deshaun Watson of Clemson (318.3) by 14 yards per game. Jackson is one of three ACC quarterbacks ranked in the Top 15 of ac ve career total off ense per game. His is joined by Syracuse’s Eric Dungey (281.2), who is 10th, and Duke’s Daniel Jones (272.9), who is 13th.

NC State quarterback Ryan Finley has a empted 224 consecu ve passes without an intercep on. That is the longest current streak in the country, is second all- me at NC State, and is sixth in ACC history. The last me he threw an intercep on was last year against Miami.

Finley ranks fi h na onally with a 74.2 comple on percentage (118 of 159). Finley is fourth in the na on in comple ons.

Louisville QB Lamar Jackson, who won the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore while averaging an ACC-record 393.4 yards per game of to-tal off ense, ranks second in the na on in total off ense, averaging 431.0 yards per game.

Jackson broke the ACC career mark for most rushing yards by a quarterback in only his third season. Jackson now has 2,868 career yards, be ering the mark of 2,806 set during the 2007-10 seasons by Georgia Tech’s Joshua Nesbit. Jackson, who has 36 career rushing touch-downs, is two shy of the ACC career mark for a quarterback (38) set by

Georgia Tech’s Tevin Washington (2009-12).

Clemson ranks third na onally in total defense, allowing just 227.0 yards per game. Clemson held 13th-ranked Auburn to just 117 total yards, the fewest by a team ranked in the na on’s top 15 since No. 2 Alabama held No. 1 LSU to just 92 yards in the 2012 BCS Na onal Cham-pionship Game.

Clemson has won 10 or more games in each of the last six years. The Tigers and Alabama are the only two teams that currently have ac- ve streaks of six or more years with double-fi gure victories. The Tigers

are only the 11th team to have had 10 wins in six successive seasons.

ACC COACHING SUCCESS Six ACC coaches – the most of any conference – rank in the top

17 of all ac ve coaches in career winning percentage with a minimum of fi ve years as a head coach. Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher ranks third (.804), followed by Clemson’s Dabo Swinney (sixth, .769), Miami’s Mark Richt (seventh, .739), Louisville’s Bobby Petrino (10th, .718), Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson (16th, .670) and Virginia’s Bronco Mendenhall (17th, .658).

Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson ranks fourth among all ac ve head coaches in career victories, having recorded 179 wins in his 20-year career. Miami’s Mark Richt is eighth with 156 wins, followed by Louisville’s Bobby Petrino, who is 16th with 112 wins, Dave Clawson of Wake Forest (107) who is ed for 20th, Virginia’s Bronco Mendenhall, who is 22nd with 104 wins, and Duke’s David Cutcliff e, who is 23rd with 100 wins.

The ACC is the fi rst conference since 1994 to have a football na onal tle winner (Clem-son) and a Heisman Trophy winner (Lamar Jackson, Louisville) from two diff erent schools in the same season.

In 2016, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson became the second ACC player in the last four years to claim the Heisman Trophy. With Clemson’s Deshaun Watson at No. 2 in the Heisman vo ng, it marked the seventh me in the 82-year history of the award that the top two fi nishers have been from the same conference, and only the second me that the top two fi nishers have been quarterbacks from the same conference.

With junior QB Lamar Jackson returning to lead Louisville in 2017, the ACC has had reign-ing Heisman Trophy-winner return to compete in the league twice in the last four years. Florida State’s Jameis Winston did so in 2014 a er winning the 2013 Heisman Trophy. Jackson is the youngest athlete (19 years, 337 days) to win the Heisman Trophy, while Winston (19 years, 342 days) is the second youngest.

DR PEPPER ACC FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME This season, The Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game will be held at Charlo e’s

Bank of America Stadium for a seventh me, resuming an agreement between the ACC and the Queen City venue that runs through the 2020 season.

The 13th annual Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game is set for Saturday, Dec. 2. The game will again be shown in prime me on ESPN (at 7:45 p.m.) or ABC (at 8 p.m.)

The six Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Games held in Charlo e have been extreme-ly successful from a fan experience and a endance standpoint. The games have averaged over 69,000 fans per contest, including sellout crowds in 2010, 2011, and 2015. An ACC Football Championship record crowd of 74,514 in 2015 set an a endance record at Bank of America Stadium. Over the last seven years, the ACC ranks second among all conferences in a endance at its football championship games.

Since 2011, the ACC Championship has been the most compe ve of the four major con-ference championship games, as it has been decided by more than fi ve fewer points per game than any other championship.

2017 ACC FOOTBALL NOTES

ACC on ESPN College GameDayFlorida State leads all ACC teams with 33 ap-pearances on ESPN’s College GameDay show and has played host to GameDay 11 mes. The Seminoles rank fourth among all schools na onally, trailing only Alabama (40), Ohio State (39) and Florida (37).

Current ACC schools have hosted College GameDay a total of 36 mes, while current ACC schools have appeared 96 mes on the sites where College GameDay has been held.

Florida State has hosted GameDay more than any other ACC school (11), followed by Vir-ginia Tech (6), Miami (5), Clemson (5), Boston College (2), Georgia Tech (2), Louisville (2), Pi (2), North Carolina (1) and NC State (1).

Virginia Tech will host for the seventh me this weekend against Clemson.
