LemboguidedElonthroughits88thfootballseasonaswellasits11thcampaignasanofficialNCAAFootballChampionshipSubdivision(FCS)memberandsixthintheSouthernConferencein2009.UnderLembo’sleadership,thePhoenixwent9-3lastyearandearnedtheprogram’sfirst-everFCSplayoffberth. DuringhisfourseasonsatthehelmoftheElonprogram,LembohastakenthePhoenixfromthebottomoftheSoConstandingstoachampionshipcontenderandtop-25programintheFCSna-tionalpolls.LembohasrejuvenatedthePhoenixfootballprogramwhilebuildingsupportandbringingenergytotheentireEloncommunity. “PeteLemboandhisstaffhavequicklyinstilledexcitementintoourfootballprogram—ontheEloncampusandaroundtheElonandBurlingtonareacommunities,”saidElonDirectorofAthleticsDaveBlank.“UnderCoachLemboandhisstaff,ourprogramhasreachedthelevelofanationalrank-ingattheFCSlevel.Theyhavenotonlyprovidedourfootballstudent-athleteswiththeguidancenecessarytobecomeSouthernConferenceandFCScontendersonthefieldofcompetition,butalsoinspiredthemtobecomethebesttheycanbeintheclassroomandinthecommunityaswell.” Offthefield,theprogramhasmadenotice-ableimprovementsintheareasofacademicprogress,recruiting,alumnirelations,homegameattendance,scheduling,communityoutreachandfundraisingunderLembo’sguidance. Lembo’scareerrecordof73-31(.702)makeshimoneofthetopactivecoachesattheDivisionIFCSlevelintermsofoverallwinningpercentage.LemboisoneofjustahandfulofDivisionIheadcoacheswhohavebeennamedthe“CoachoftheYear”intwoseparateconferences. ThispastseasonLemboguidedElontoitsbestfinishinadecadeasthePhoenixwent9-3,winningninegamesforjustthesecondtimeinits11-yearDivisionIhistory.Elon’sregular-seasonperformanceearnedthesquaditsfirst-everFCSplayoffberthandthePhoenixfinishedtheseasonrankedinthetop-10inbothTheSportsNetworkandFCScoachespollswhereElonrankedninthand10th,respectively.ThePhoenixalsoimproveduponitsSoConstandingfromtheprevioussea-son,going7-1toplacesecondintheleague,itshighest-everconferencefinish.Withitsfinish,thePhoenixsawaprogram-best14playerscollect

All-SoConaccoladesfromtheleague’scoaches.Lemboplacedeighthinthevotingforthe2009EddieRobinsonAwardwhichispresentedtothetopFCScoachinthecountry. Duringthe2009campaign,LembowatchedhisseniorwidereceiverTerrellHudginsrewriterecordbooks.Hudginsconcludedhiscareerinthemaroonandgoldastheholderof19NCAA,SoConorElonrecords.AmongthenumerousmarkssetbyHudginsweretheNCAADivisionIrecordsforcareerreceptions(395),careerreceivingyards(5,250),careergameswithatleast100receivingyards(28)andcareer1,000-yardreceivingsea-sons(4).Hudginsplacedsecondinthevotingforthe2009WalterPaytonAwardwhichishandedouttothetopFCSoffensiveplayeroftheseason. UnderLembo,the2008editionofthePhoenixfinishedwithan8-4overallmark,postingback-to-backwinningseasonsforthefirsttimesincethe1999and2000campaigns.ElonalsonotchedaSoConledgerof6-2tofinishinthirdplaceintheleague.Rankedamongthenation’stop-25programsinbothTheSportsNetworkandFCSCoachespollsallseasonlong,thePhoenixpeakedatnumberthreeinlateOctoberbeforefinishingtheyearratedashighas17thinthecountry. Lembo’ssquadearnedvictoriesoverthreetop-25programsin2008–GeorgiaSouthern,FurmanandTheCitadel.Alsoofnoteweretherecordssetduringtheseason.In2008,quarterbackScottRiddlebecametheprogram’sall-timecareerlead-erincompletions(609),passingattempts(935),passingyards(6,688),touchdownpasses(55),touchdownsresponsible(65)andtotaloffensiveyards(6,615).HealsoestablishedaSoConcareermarkwith22consecutivegamesthrowingatouchdownpass.ReceiverTerrellHudginsbecametheall-timeleaderforbothElonandtheSoConinreceptions(272),touchdowncatches(36)andreceivingyards(3,617)whilealsoestablishingaSoConrecordwith18gameswithatleast100receivingyards.KickerAndrewWilcoxfinishedhiscareerastheschool’sall-timeleaderinbothfieldgoalsmade(59)andPATkicksmade(130). In2007,Lembo’ssquadpostedtheprogram’smostvictoriesinsevenyears,finishingthecampaignwitha7-4overallmark.Elon’s4-3SoConledger,itsfirstwinning-leaguemark,tiedtheteamforthirdintheleague.ThePhoenixappearedinthenationalpollsthroughouttheyear,finishingtheseasonranked23rdinbothTheSportsNetworkandFCSCoachespolls.Elonpickedupvictoriesovertop-25rankedteamsinWoffordandGeorgiaSouthernwhilealsoknockingoffBigSouthchampionLiberty.Forhisefforts,LembowashonoredastheSouthernConferenceCoachoftheYearandfinishedsixthinthevotingfortheEddieRobinsonAward. Lembo’s2007teamsetnumerousElon,South-

ernConferenceandNCAArecords.AmongthoseweretheNCAAsingle-seasonrecordforreceptionsbytwoteammates.MichaelMayersandHudginscombinedfor207catches,surpassingthepreviousmarkheldbyJerryRiceandJoeThomasofMis-sissippiValleyState.RiddleestablishedanElonsingle-seasonandNCAAfreshmanrecordfortotaloffenseat3,738yardswhilesettinganewSoConandNCAAfreshmanstandardfortotaloffenseaverageat347.0yardspergame.Elon’soffenseratedsecondnationallyinpassingoffenseand10thinscoringoffensein2007. Thatsameyear,fivedifferentPhoenixplayersclaimedAll-SoConaccoladeswhileHudginswasalsoamongthosereceivingvotesfortheWalterPaytonAward.RiddlewasnamedNationalFresh-manoftheYearandSoConFreshmanoftheYear. InhisfirstyearatElon,LembomadeanimmediateimpactasthePhoenixfinishedthe2006seasonwitha5-6mark,twovictoriesmorethanthepreviousseason.Elonalsoknockedoffatop-25opponentforthefirsttimeinsixyears,ledtheleagueinpassingoffenseandhadtwoAll-Americans. PriortocomingtoElon,LembospenteightyearsatLehigh,servingtheMountainHawksasanassistantcoachforthreeseasons(recruitingcoordinatorin1998-2000,runningbackcoachin1998-99andoffensivelinecoachin2000)beforetakingoverasheadcoachforthe2001campaign.Eachofthoseeightsquadsendeduprankedamongthecountry’stop-25teamsandwonatleasteightgames.ThoseteamsalsoclaimedtwoPatriotLeaguetitles. Lehighconcludedthe2005campaignwithan8-3overallrecordanda4-2markagainstPatriotLeagueoppositiononitswaytoaNo.22rankinginTheSportsNetwork’sfinalregular-seasonpoll.TheMountainHawkswereoneofonlytwoprogramsinNCAA-IAA(alongwithMontana)tohavewoneightormoregamesineachoftheeightyearsduringthatspan. Alsoin2005,eightMountainHawkswerenamedtothefirstteamAll-PatriotLeague.Inall,11Lehighplayersearnedall-leaguerecognition–thefourthstraightseasoninwhichLehighplacedatleast10membersontheteams. DuringLembo’stenureasitsheadcoach,Lehighpostedanundefeatedregularseason,wonitsfirst-everhomeplayoffvictory,claimeditsfirstLambertCuptrophysince1980andpickedupitsfirstwinoveranNCAA-IAopponentsince1987whilecapturingtwoPatriotLeaguechampionships. TheMountainHawksconsistentlyhoveredintheNCAA-IAAtop-25,peakingashighasNo.2inSeptember2002.NoteaminallofNCAA-IAAfashionedabetterwinningpercentageduringLembo’stenurewiththeMountainHawksthanLehigh(.813at78-18).The78winsoverthat

LemboarrivedonSouthMountaininthesum-merof1998whenhewashiredbyformerheadcoachKevinHigginsasrunningbackscoachandrecruitingcoordinator.Thatfall,theMountainHawkswent12-1andendedtheyearranked14thinthenation. AfterLehighcompletedthe1999seasonwitha10-2slate,Lembowaspromotedtoassistantheadcoachandoffensivelinecoachinadditiontohisrecruitingcoordinatorduties.WhenHigginslefttobecomeanassistantwiththeDetroitLionsafterthesuccessful2000campaign,Lemboquicklybecamethe27thheadcoachinthehis-toryoftheprogram. Lemboprovedtobereadyforthechallengeashis2001teamwent11-1,finishingNo.5inbothNCAA-IAApolls.TherookiecoachwasnamedboththePatriotLeagueCoachoftheYearandtheEddieRobinsonNationalCoachoftheYearwhileLehighbecamethefirstI-AAneed-basedscholarshipprogramtoeverwintheprestigiousLambertCup. Lembo’sgritty2002and2003teamspostedback-to-backeight-victoryrecordsdespiteanupgradedschedulethatincludedtwoI-Aop-ponents.Inbothseasons,theMountainHawksknockedoffleaguerivalFordhamwhentheRamsalsorankedamongthetop-25.In2003,theMountainHawksposteda6-1leaguemarkwithanaveragemarginofvictoryofover21points.Lehigh’ssoleleaguelosswasatoughseven-pointdecisionontheroadatColgate,theeventualnationalrunner-up. The2004editionoftheMountainHawkssurprisedmanybypostinganine-winseasonanda5-1conferencerecordenroutetoashareofaPatriotLeaguetitleandanat-largeberthintheNCAAplayoffs.ThoughLehighlostaheartbreak-ing14-13gametoeventualnationalchampionJamesMadisonatGoodmanStadium,thefactthattheMountainHawksgarneredanat-largebidandahomeplayoffgamespeakstothelevelofrespecttheprogramhadearned. TheaggressiveschedulingpolicyinstitutedbyLembomadeforincreasedexcitementamongNCAA-IAAfootballfansintheEast.NotonlydidtheMountainHawksbegintoregularlytakeonanI-Aopponenteachseason,butLehighalsorenewedrivalrieswithtraditionalI-AApow-erhousesVillanova(in2004)andDelaware(in2005),amongothers. Offthefield,Lembowashardatworktoimprovethestudent-athletes’bondwithoneanother.Heestablishedaleadershipcouncilthatconsistedoffourteammembersfromeachclass.Thecouncilhelpedtoresolveissueswithintheteamandincreasedcommunicationbetweentheteamandthecoachingstaff.

Lemboalsoimprovedalumnirelationsthroughaweeklyemailnewsletter.HedidquiteabitoftravelingtomeetwithalumniinoutlyingareasaswellasintheLehighValley.DuringhislastthreeyearsatLehigh,LembowasthefeaturedspeakerontheLehighAlumniAssociation’sMidwestSwing,speakinginPittsburgh,Cleveland,DetroitandChicago. Intheclassroom,theprogramprideditselfonproducingnotonlygreatfootballplayers,butalsotruescholars.In2003,widereceiverDaveCrockettwasnamedtotheDivisionI-AAAthleticsDirectorsAcademicAll-StarTeam,thesecond-straightyearaLehighfootballplayerearnedsuchadistinguishedhonor. In2002,strongsafetyMattSalvaterraearnedsimilarrecognitionwhilealsobeinglaudedasthePatriotLeague’sScholar-AthleteoftheYearinallsports.In2001,fourstudent-athletesreceivedhonorsasVerizonAcademicAll-DistrictSelec-tions.Lehighhadbeenrankedinthenation’stop-20ingraduationratesfor18consecutiveyears. NotonlyhadLembomadeanimpactatLehigh,buthehadbecomequiteactiveinthefootballcoachingcommunityaswell.InMayof2003,LembowasaskedtoserveontheAmericanFootballCoachesAssociation’s(AFCA)PublicRelationsCommittee.Thatgroupisresponsibleforfindingnewwaystoshowcasethegameinapositivelight.LemboconcludedhisfifthyearasamemberoftheFCSExecutiveCommittee,servingaspresidentin2006-07. LembocametoLehighfromHampden-SydneyCollegeinVirginia,whereheservedastheteam’soffensivecoordinator,offensivelinecoachandrecruitingcoordinator.PriortohisstintwithHampden-Sydney,LembocoachedthetightendsandoffensivetacklesatDartmouthCollege. Duringthisperiod,Dartmouthenjoyedout-standingsuccess,includingthenation’slongestunbeatenstreakinDivisionI-AAandanundefeatedIvyLeagueChampionshipseasonin1996.SeveralmembersofthatDartmouthstaffhavecontinuedoutstandingcareersatotherinstitutions. LembobeganhiscareerasagraduateassistantfortwoyearsunderattheUniversityatAlbany.Hecoachedtheoffensivelineandearnedamaster’sdegreeinpublicadministrationfromtheRockefellerSchoolofPublicAffairsin1994. AsanundergraduateatGeorgetownUniversityfrom1988-1992,Lembowasafour-yearstarterandteamcaptainasanoffensivelineman.Asasenior,hereceivedtheCoaches’Awardforout-standingleadershipfromGeorgetownAthletics. LemboearnedhisBachelorofScienceinBusi-nessAdministrationfromGeorgetownin1992.HeismarriedtotheformerJeniferKochis.TheyaretheparentsofSophia,A.J.andVictoria.
