DuringLembo’stenureasitsheadcoach,Lehighpostedanundefeatedregularseason,wonitsfirst-everhomeplayoffvictory,claimeditsfirstLambertCuptrophysince1980andpickedupitsfirstwinoveranNCAA-IAopponentsince1987whilecapturingtwoPatriotLeaguechampionships. TheMountainHawksconsistentlyhoveredintheNCAA-IAAtop-25,peakingashighasNo.2inSeptember2002.NoteaminallofNCAA-IAAfashionedabetterwinningpercentageduringLembo’stenurewiththeMountainHawksthanLehigh(.813at78-18).The78winsoverthat

LemboarrivedonSouthMountaininthesum-merof1998whenhewashiredbyformerheadcoachKevinHigginsasrunningbackscoachandrecruitingcoordinator.Thatfall,theMountainHawkswent12-1andendedtheyearranked14thinthenation. AfterLehighcompletedthe1999seasonwitha10-2slate,Lembowaspromotedtoassistantheadcoachandoffensivelinecoachinadditiontohisrecruitingcoordinatorduties.WhenHigginslefttobecomeanassistantwiththeDetroitLionsafterthesuccessful2000campaign,Lemboquicklybecamethe27thheadcoachinthehis-toryoftheprogram. Lemboprovedtobereadyforthechallengeashis2001teamwent11-1,finishingNo.5inbothNCAA-IAApolls.TherookiecoachwasnamedboththePatriotLeagueCoachoftheYearandtheEddieRobinsonNationalCoachoftheYearwhileLehighbecamethefirstI-AAneed-basedscholarshipprogramtoeverwintheprestigiousLambertCup. Lembo’sgritty2002and2003teamspostedback-to-backeight-victoryrecordsdespiteanupgradedschedulethatincludedtwoI-Aop-ponents.Inbothseasons,theMountainHawksknockedoffleaguerivalFordhamwhentheRamsalsorankedamongthetop-25.In2003,theMountainHawksposteda6-1leaguemarkwithanaveragemarginofvictoryofover21points.Lehigh’ssoleleaguelosswasatoughseven-pointdecisionontheroadatColgate,theeventualnationalrunner-up. TheaggressiveschedulingpolicyinstitutedbyLembomadeforincreasedexcitementamongNCAA-IAAfootballfansintheEast.NotonlydidtheMountainHawksbegintoregularlytakeonanI-Aopponenteachseason,butLehighalsorenewedrivalrieswithtraditionalI-AApow-erhousesVillanova(in2004)andDelaware(in2005),amongothers. Offthefield,Lembowashardatworktoimprovethestudent-athletes’bondwithoneanother.Heestablishedaleadershipcouncilthatconsistedoffourteammembersfromeachclass.Thecouncilhelpedtoresolveissueswithintheteamandincreasedcommunicationbetweentheteamandthecoachingstaff.

Intheclassroom,theprogramprideditselfonproducingnotonlygreatfootballplayers,butalsotruescholars.In2003,widereceiverDaveCrockettwasnamedtotheDivisionI-AAAthleticsDirectorsAcademicAll-StarTeam,thesecond-straightyearaLehighfootballplayerearnedsuchadistinguishedhonor. In2002,strongsafetyMattSalvaterraearnedsimilarrecognitionwhilealsobeinglaudedasthePatriotLeague’sScholar-AthleteoftheYearinallsports.In2001,fourstudent-athletesreceivedhonorsasVerizonAcademicAll-DistrictSelec-tions.Lehighhadbeenrankedinthenation’stop-20ingraduationratesfor18consecutiveyears. NotonlyhadLembomadeanimpactatLehigh,buthehadbecomequiteactiveinthefootballcoachingcommunityaswell.InMayof2003,LembowasaskedtoserveontheAmericanFootballCoachesAssociation’s(AFCA)PublicRelationsCommittee.Thatgroupisresponsibleforfindingnewwaystoshowcasethegameinapositivelight.LemboconcludedhisfifthyearasamemberoftheFCSExecutiveCommittee,servingaspresidentin2006-07. LembocametoLehighfromHampden-SydneyCollegeinVirginia,whereheservedastheteam’soffensivecoordinator,offensivelinecoachandrecruitingcoordinator.PriortohisstintwithHampden-Sydney,LembocoachedthetightendsandoffensivetacklesatDartmouthCollege.
