Ten Years of DieselCycle Technology inGeneral AviationIn 2002 the first diesel aircraft engines – the Centurionsof Thielert - were introduced to the piston market. Within the last ten years the engines have proven to be the sole concept to provide a new state-of-the-arttechnology production and design for General Aviationaircraft. Despite some earlier technical obstacles andlater problems of financing, the Centurion Diesel engineis still what you can call “the engine of the future”.

Over 3,000 engines have been delivered inthe timeframe of a decade though marketsaw “leaded” times shrinking year over yearsince 2007. But what has been fact before the Lehman year is still valid. The GA piston market driver is modern technology in allaspects of aircraft: airframe, safety, avionicsand propulsion. Remember back in the mid 90’s.

You have seen neither mass production composite cells and glass cockpits nor alternative propulsion systems. Not a surprisewith special regard to engines. The very smallmarket did not allow large developmentbudgets. Also, regulations and certificationsare much more complex than in the goldenGeneral Aviation age half a century ago.

Thielert’s solution was to adapt a mass production car Diesel cycle engine for GApiston aircraft. Just to participate in largedesign budgets of the automotive industry for proven reliability and to run the engine onthe aviation standard fuel: jet fuel. Because fueling the standard, means fueling the futurestandard with regard to bio fuels and availability. Do not forget the higher efficiencyof a Diesel engine. After three and half millionflight hours the Centurion engines haveproven reliability, fuel efficiency, environmen-tal benefits and readiness for the future.

More than a third of the worldwide pistonpopulation is covered with supplemental typecertifications to install the Centurion 2.0 and2.0s: Cessna 172, Piper PA-28, Robin DR400as well as Diamond DA40 and DA42. Today we focus on reliability and what meansfuture readiness in a world of uncertain fuel availability.

Reliability of CENTURION Engines

In contrast to the competition, Centurionengines were developed under the assumption that they could be integrated with the same weight under existing cowlings. This enables their use in a widerange of aircraft, as well as the technicallysimple replacement of the Centurion 1.7 withthe Centurion 2.0, which can be carried out inall aircraft. Both engines feature above-

average reliability. According to data fromthe U.S. Federal Aviation Administration(FAA), general aviation aircraft experiencean average of 10 in-flight shutdowns(IFSD) for every 100,000 flight hours. The shutdown rate of Centurion enginesis approximately 50 percent lower and may be even less.

For example, in the period since the market launch in 2002, the shutdown ratefor all Centurion engine models has been5.46 shutdowns per 100,000 flight hours.Over the past 52 weeks, the shutdownrate of the currently latest engine model,the Centurion 2.0, was actually only 2.32IFSD per 100,000 flight hours. Thismakes it one of the most reliable pistonengines in general aviation.

As logical technical enhancements, theCenturion 2.0 and 2.0s possess a rangeof advantages over the 1.7 since theyincorporate the entire field experiencegained with the predecessor model. The cumulative flight hours of the Centurion fleet increased over the same period to more than three and a half million hours up to now. “With the market

launch of the Centurion 1.7 in 2002, we provided the decisive stimulus for the

develoment of alternative propulsionsystems for small aircraft.

In total, well over 3,000 Centurionengines have been delivered so far.In many aspects Centurion is andremains number one for diesel aircraft engines for general aviation,” explained Centurion’sspokesman Sebastian Wentzler.

A Question of Fuel

When it comes to jet fuels, environmentally responsible measures are already being successfully promoted. One example for these new, cleanerfuels is the production of eco-friendly jet fuels from biomassor by Fischer-Tropsch process. The technical standards for theseso-called semi-synthetic jet fuels(SSJFs) are set by ASTMInternational. Certifications from the aviation authorities are basedon these standards.

The latest specifications regulatethe blending of SSJFs with

conventional kerosene. To this effect, the FAApublished the information bulletin NE-11-36 in September 2011 announcing that the newSSJFs can be used in aircraft and enginesapproved for use with Jet A or Jet A-1 fuels.This applies without limitation to Centurion piston aircraft engines.

The company has worked with the precursorsto SSJFs for years and Centurion engineshave been undergoing tests with the new fuelsfor over two years. These tests have shownthat Centurion engines are not only perfectlysuited for the new SSJFs, but for fully synthetic fuels as well. Owners of Centurionengines will in the future be able to tank upwith these new fuels without worry.

As background: The ASTM International standard D1655 is the "Standard Specificationfor Aviation Turbine Fuels," meaning kerosenessuch as Jet A and Jet A-1. The ASTM standardD7566 "Standard Specification for AviationTurbine Fuel Containing SynthesizedHydrocarbons" regulates the blending of conventional kerosene with alternative feedstocks.

In July 2011, this specification was expandedto include various biofuels. D7566 fuels mustshow properties and performance that areessentially identical to those of conventionaljet fuels according to D1655, which allowsblending of D1655 fuels with componentsunder the D7566 specification. Synthetic andsemi-synthetic jet fuels previously approvedaccording to ASTM D7566 and mixed withmineral oil-based turbine fuels that correspondto ASTM D1655 can now be re-identified asD1655 fuels when they enter the distributionsystem and do not need to be separatelydeclared.

As a result, it will not always be apparent tofuel suppliers whether biofuels or other SSJFsare present. The FAA determined inSeptember 2011 that D7566 fuels meet all ofthe requirements for D1655 specification andcan therefore be used in all aircraft andengines that are approved to operate withD1655 fuels. Operational limits in aircraft flightmanuals, operating instructions, and type certificate data sheets that specify ASTMD1655 Jet A or Jet A-1 fuel are also valid foruse with D7566 fuels. However, other limitationsfrom authorization holders can be implemented.

From the manufacturer and certification holderof Centurion engines, there are no such limitations. Owners of Centurion enginestherefore do not need to worry when it comesto using the new fuels. The economical andreliable Centurion engines have thereby onceagain shown themselves to be sustainableand environmentally friendly aircraft engines.

In a surprise move,Experimental AircraftAssociation President and CEO Rod Hightowerstepped down on Oct. 22and newly elevated EAAChairman Jack Peltonagreed to run the 175,000member organization on an interim basis.

Leonardo da Costa Sayago came to the UK in the mid-1960’s to study Naval Architecture atSunderland University. He specialised in YachtDesign working first for Campers & Nicholson,then Angus Primorose, then setting up his ownDesign Office.

Many thousands of Yachts and Powerboats beingbuilt to his designs, such as the Sailfish 18,OS19,Sandpiper 565,Miss Enfield ,Crusader ,Sealord 15& 25 ,Caravela 22 & 25 , in fact too many to mention.

From his Headquarters in Hamble he distributedyachts such as Beneteau, Feeling, GibSea, SwedenYachts, Nauticat. He became a pilot in 1981 and alsobecame involved with the marketing of Robin,Mooney and Maule aircraft.

In 1993 he retired to hishome country, Portugaland managed to stayretired for a whole 2weeks. Retirement wasreally not for him, so hestarted to look for a farmto create his old dreams of starting both a Pilots’Village and an Aviation company to import somesuper small planes from Central Europe such as theEurostar ,SportCruiser and the Eurofox.

Right in the center of Portugal he found a 75 acresfarm in an area of outstanding natural beauty, next toa big lake complete with private beaches of fine sandand water temperatures of about 25 + centigrade.The lake is about 25 kms long by 2 kms wide. Good, steady winds of about 10knots, perfect for flying, sailing, water-skiing, fishing, balooning, birdwatching etc., etc.

A beautiful grass runway is about 600 meters x 20metres wide with good safety margins and clearapproaches was built. Followed by a couple of lakesand some houses. All we needed was some like-minded pilots and sailors to come and join usand have some fun.

The air is pure, no noise pollution, the sky at night isreally something else, it is almost frightening, bring-ing a telescope is a must. Some bird-watcher friendsfound 55 varieties of birds inside the farm. There areall sorts of animals, not to mention our 4 Dalmatians,3 cats, Molly and her 7 sheep friends that eat fromour hands, as well as ducks and geese.

We are 30 minutes flying time from Lisbon andBadajoz, 45 minutes from the Algarve, 1 hour fromthe snow skiing peaks of our big mountain Estrela inthe Winter. From the UK we are 2 hours flying time atridiculously cheap rates, making it feasible to comefor just a week end.

All are welcome to visit and discuss with us yourrequirements and I am sure you will not only enjoyyour trip and may even want to share our "LittleParadise" here in Sunny Portugal.

By October 18, a V1,Sopwith2.F1 Camel and Royal Aircraft FactoryBe.2 had also been moved to the IWM Duxfordsite. A Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1A and NorthAmerican P51-D Mustang followed them inNovember. Nimrod Unveiled at Cosford

Hawker Siddeley Nimrod R.1 was unveiled at theRAF Museum Cosford at the end of September.The former 52 Squadron aircraft had arrived byroad from Kemble, earlier this year, and was re-assembled during the summer. Te aircraft is onlyone of four aircraft that were built originally assignals intelligence (SIGINT) aircraft.

V2 Rocket for Gillingham

The Royal Engineers Museum (REM) inGillingham, Kent took delivery of a recentlyrestored A4/V2 rocket on Septemvber 11. The V2 had been located close by at the RoyalSchool of Military Engineering depot for about40 years. The rocket was restored during thesummer by Borley Brothers in Cambridge whohave restored other samples. The rocket wasoriginally captured intact near Nienburg inNorthern Germany in 1945.

Procter Flies

At the end of September, the Classic AircraftTrust’s Percival Proctor IV made its first post-restoration flight at Coventry Airport. This flight followed 18 years of painstakingwork rebuilding the airframe and restoring theaircraft completely to full flying condition. The paint finish including an RAF fin flash represents a Proctor as operated inWashington D.C., for the UK Ambassador as a diplomatic aircraft.

Griffon Spitfire Airborne

Following a major overhaul by the AircraftRestoration Company, the Spitfire PR.XIX flew at Duxford on October 9. The Spitfire had arrived from East Midlands Airport inSeptember 2010, and was de-riveted and re-skinned in the following two years. The final paint finishes returned the aircraft to PR Blue.

More Griffon Spitfires will be coming to the UK soon. In mid-October in Rangoon, BurmaDavid Cundall signed the deal with theBurmese government that will allow commencement of work to recover a number(as many as 20) Spitfire Mk X1vs that are saidto have been buried at Mingaladon in August 1945.

First Italian JetRestored

The public first appearance of the first everItalian jet to be restored in Itraly took place atEmilia Airport on September 15. The aircraftwas an Aermacchi MB326E owned by RenzoCatellani who runs the Vola Fenice FlyingMuseum. The restoration to fly had com-menced in 2008. This restoration is one ofmany such projects underway currently inItaly which is seeing renewed interest in bringing former aircraft back to display andflying condition.

Bf109E-1 to Fly

A former Spanish Civil War veteranMesserschmitt Bf 109E-1 recently arrived inGermany at the workshops of Meier Motors inBremgarten. The aircraft will now undergo acomplete restoration to return it to full flyingconditiuoin. It was recovered from a yard inSpain by British collector Robs Lamplough in1983 and spent several years on display atthe Tangmere Museum, near Goodwood,West Sussex.

The PremierElegance package features decorative softgoods with four new interior décor color optionsincluding the dramatic new Glacier, which features porcelain leather seating, IZIT leatherermine pearl side panels and a beautiful blacktextured loop pile Cotswald Exeter carpet.Additionally, the Premier Elegance interior

cockpit décor now incorporates a matte blackfinish on the cockpit avionics panel that is mucheasier on the pilot's eyes.

The Premier Elegance package is standard onthe single-engine Piper Meridian turboprop andwill be offered as an option for the single-enginepiston powered Matrix and Mirage aircraft beginning in January 2013. Boeing Business Jets set a new world recordfor "Speed over a Recognized Course" whena BBJ flew non-stop from Los Angeles,California to Auckland, New Zealand forinstallation of its VIP interior.

The BBJ made the 5,658 nautical mile trip in 13 hours, 7 minutes and 54 seconds. Therecord-setting trip was monitored by the National

Aeronautic Association based in Washington,D.C. When the airplane left Los Angeles with fullfuel, it was 21,000 pounds below MTOW meaning that the customer can add a full VIPinterior, fill all the seats, and still carry full fueland enjoy remarkable range. The airplane had7,800 pounds of fuel remaining when it landed in Auckland. The BBJ, owned by SamsungElectronics, is equipped with seven auxiliary fueltanks, givingit the extended range capability. It also features lower-cabin altitude, which differentiates it from its competitor. The optionprovides a 6,500-foot cabin altitude instead ofthe standard 8,000-foot cabin, allowing passengers to travel in greater comfort. The airplane was flown to New Zealand for thefirst interior completion of a new BBJ by AltitudeAerospace Interiors, an Auckland-based company which was launched in 2008. Boeingdelivers the BBJ to the customer "green" (no interior or paint) so it can be customized tosuit the specific needs and taste of the cus-tomer. The completion center of the customer'schoosing installs the VIP interiors, which typically takes nine months to a year.

The New Citation X: Retaining the name that started it all Much to customers' delight, the Citation X name willlive on. When the plans were drawn to improve onthe Citation X systems and performance, that aircraftwas to be called the "Citation TEN". Through thedesign and certification process, the Citation TENhas claimed the title of world's fastest business jet,but customers have told Cessna that they prefer thenew aircraft retain the Citation X name.

Commitment to customer service: Smart global growth in EuropeCessna also reinforced the company's activities tiedto the smart global growth strategy including open-ing Citation Service Centers in the United Kingdomand Spain. BRAKESECLIPSE’s Anti-Skid BrakesEclipse Aerospace has formally announced the addition of an Anti-SkidBraking System (ABS) as a new option for the new production Eclipse 550 jets,and as a retrofit to the existing fleet of Eclipse 500s.

In-aircraft testing is complete with certificationand availability expected within six months. ABS allows for maximum braking energy and skid control without the need for a conventional hydraulic system.

AIRPORTS GLOUCESTERSHIRE AirportIncreases Runway DistancesGloucestershireAirport passed amajor milestonetoday when theCivil AviationAuthority officiallypublished itsincreased runway distances. Although only 12m of additional tarmac have been laid, the removal of obstaclesnearby and creation of an overrun RESA meansthe landing distances available for aircraft haveincreased by up to 150m.

The increases are as a result of a package of safetymeasures the Airport has implemented as part of itsRunway Safety Project, which has seen housesdemolished and rebuilt, a new entrance road createdand a section of a brook culverted and diverted pastthe end of the Staverton tarmac. Runway 27 hasalso been upgraded for Cat 1 ILS approaches.

Head of operations, Darren Lewington said: - “This isarguably the most significant point in the project,

which maximises the potential of our Code 2 runway. The extra runwaydistances will make a significant difference to thecorporate and business operators that currently use the Airport and will generate additional businessfor us.

With the closure of Filton airport near Bristol at theend of the year, there is already additional demandfrom corporate aircraft flying to the southwest ofEngand. Being minutes from the M5, we’re wellplaced to capture that traffic.”

The new overall runway dimension are 1431m(4693ft) x 30m, with LDA increasing to 1241m(4070ft) on runway 09 and 1147m (3762ft) on runway 27.

AgustaWestland has confirmed that it hasbeen selected to go forward to the contracting phase for their bid of up to £46 million from Round 3 of the UKGovernment’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

The combined RGF and AgustaWestlandinvestment of more than £100 million will create a brand new industry sector in the UKwith the establishment of a Civil HelicopterHub. The projects will create and safeguardover 3000 jobs across the UK and create hundreds of new opportunities for the UK supply chain.

The funding will also support the design anddevelopment in the UK of advanced technolo-gies in the field of tiltrotor systems integrationand for increasing the performance of tiltrotors,which combine the benefits of a helicopter andan aeroplane in one aircraft.

NEW HELICOPTERAgustaWestland launches newKoala variant

AgustaWestland has unveiled a new variant of its single-engined AW119 Koala family. The AW119Kx was debuted at the Air MedicalTransport Conference (AMTC) in Seattle on 22 October. The new aircraft is fitted with theGarmin G1000H flight deck and a host of newavionics and pilot aids including synthetic visionsystems, a moving map, as well as terrain andobstacle avoidance system.

The upgrade was designed as part of an orderfor 15 aircraft by the Life Flight Network signed at Heli-Expo in Dallas in February. The system. previously known as the 'Next GenerationCockpit Display' was signed to give the LifeFlight aircraft an all weather capability ready forwhen the aircraft begin operations in 2013across Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

AgustaWestland says the new avionics are alsooptimised for diagnostics and data analysis formaintenance purposes. The AW119Kx EMS helicopter configuration will include Night VisionImaging System (NVIS) lighting and operation of Night Vision Goggles (NVGs).

A three Judge panel of France’s Tribunal deGrande Instance de Paris recently ruled thatthe Bell 429 production skid gear does notinfringe Eurocopter’s French landing skidgear patent. All Bell 429s have been and willcontinue to be delivered with the current production gear.

"This ruling by the French court, once again validating the design of the Bell 429 productionskid gear, is a resounding victory for BellHelicopter," said John L. Garrison, President andCEO of Bell Helicopter. "Integrity is woven intothe fiber of our company and we work tirelesslyto ensure our actions are consistent with thiscore value.”

In finding that the Bell 429’s skid gear does notinfringe the Eurocopter patent, the French Courtdismissed the claims against Bell Helicopter.The Court also ordered Eurocopter to pay thecosts of the proceedings, and to pay BHTI andBell Canada each the sum of €65,000 in costs.

The Swedish Maritime Administration hassigned an agreement with the Anglo-Italianhelicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland SpAto acquire seven new AW139 helicopters forits nation-wide search and rescue (SAR) service. The first delivery is expected in May 2013.

The agency statesthat “[the] AW139 isa proven rescue helicopter that is optimal for Swedish conditions and certified according to international standards.” The MaritimeAdministration is the agency responsible for Swedish sea- and air rescue. A key part of the business is its helicopter service that is available for rescues at sea and over land.

The helis are available at five duty stationsalong the Swedish coast - Ronneby, Visby,Gothenburg, Norrtälje and Umeå. They are inalert around the clock all year and ready to commence an action within 15 minutes afteran emergency call.
