FROM THE PRINCIPAL
CHESS
The Warrigal Road State School team has won 1st place in the Intermediate Team Trophy
under Novice Grade category in the chess competition that was organised by South Brisbane
Junior Chess Club Primary Schools at Coorparoo.
The team of 4 boys are Raymond L
6C, Mathew L 6B, Forrest F 2A
and Bryan N 6A. There were 18
teams who participated in this
category, either from the private or
state schools. They played 6
games including being challenged
by the Open team.
Congratulation boys – well done for doing so well!
LEARNING GOALS
Children in all year levels work out what their learning goals are in reading, writing and
mathematics. These goals help them focus on specific areas of their learning that they may
need extra support in or it may just be the next thing in a pattern of learning. Ask your child
what their learning goals are – helping them by talking about the goals will assist them to be
successful.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS 2019
Parent teacher interviews form part of our formal reporting period process to parents. These

Parent Teacher interviews will be held for Years Prep to Year Six on Thursday 28 March
(3:30-8:00pm) and Tuesday 2 April (3:30-8:00pm). All interviews will be held in the Hall.

All payments are to be made online directly to the photography company, Silver Rose. Please see the details
below. As in previous years, no payments will be taken through the school office.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION
Religious Instruction commenced on Monday 4 March. The approved faith groups for 2019 currently include
Interdenominational Christian, Buddhist (unfortunately, only for Year Three to Six students), Sikhism and
Islam (pending faith group commitment). Changes to your preferences around participation in Religious
Instruction can be made in writing at any time and forwarded to the Principal.
TRAFFIC SAFETY – PICK UP/DROP OFF ZONES
Remember to demonstrate safe traffic behaviour around the school and in pick up and drop off areas.
Police and administration staff have been patrolling the area in recent weeks and have noted the following
behaviours:
Parents parking in no-parking zones (yellow-lined areas) and across private driveways.
Parents driving away from pick up zones, whilst children have no seatbelts on.
Parents ignoring the ‘No Stopping’ signs, particularly on Demigre Street.
Parents encouraging their own children to cross the road in between the pickup zones, and not at the
school crossings.
Warrigal Road State School, along with other local stakeholders, have spent a lot of time lobbying for the
current signage around school, in order to keep our students safe. Please adhere to the traffic laws and be
patient when picking your children up.
Also, please have a conversation with your child as to where they are to meet you at the end of the day.
Students being picked up must go straight to their designated pick-up area, and are NOT permitted to play on
play equipment and in other areas while they wait. Please note, any students not picked up within a reasonable
timeframe after 3pm, will be taken to the office for collection.
FIT LESSONS
Throughout the past few weeks, the Deputy Principals have been teaching lessons in each of the classes based
around our focus rule for the term: Being Respectful. In the Year 3 and 4 classrooms, we have focussed on what
being respectful looks like, sounds like and feels like in different areas of the school environment. We have
particularly focussed on areas such as the toilets, the library, the playground and
eating areas, as well as what respect looks like when walking through the school.
In order to show respect, students should be very aware of how their words and
actions impact on other people, property and environments.
TOILETS
We have had a few incidents of students vandalising our school toilets by
throwing toilet paper and water around. You may see our new signs up in the
toilet areas reminding students to be responsible and be respectful when using our
facilities. Please discuss this with your child at home to reinforce this message.
PARK ‘n’ STRIDE / ANTI-BULLYING DAY
Officially, the Anti-Bullying Day (Bullying…No
Way! Day) is recognised this year on 15 March.
With so many other events going on in the
school, Warrigal Road State School will
recognise this day on Friday 5 April.
On this date we will be holding our Term 1 Park
‘n’ Stride (please see details below) and
encouraging everyone to wear an ORANGE
SHIRT to support the anti-bullying message.

YEAR 4-6 SENIOR CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
Thank you to all staff, admin, YMCA, parents and students who contributed
to another successful Senior Cross Country Carnival last week. We had
fantastic team spirit, enthusiasm and running stamina on display.
Congratulations to all students who raced, whether it was in the competitive
race or the fun run. It was great to see so many students getting involved and
earning points for their house. The winning house on the day, by the
narrowest of margins, was Goonawarra. Congratulations!
The following students have been selected to represent our school at the Eastern Taipans District Cross Country
Trials on Thursday 4 April at CJ Greenfields Complex Park, Richlands. We wish them all the very best in
preparation and on the day.

GALA DAY RESULTS
Junior Girls Soccer
Last Friday the rain held off to allow Gala Day 1 to go ahead. Our
Junior A Girls Soccer team had a great start to the season,
convincingly winning all three games against Stretton, Islamic
College and Robertson. The girls displayed great team work and
determination throughout the day. As they learn more about the game
in the coming weeks, I look forward to their results over the next two
Gala Days. Keep up the great work girls. McDonalds awards went to
Fatima for her strike power up front and Isabella for her solid boot in
defence.
The Junior B Girls Soccer team had mixed results on Gala Day 1.
They won against the Warrigal C girls before going down to Yeronga
in their next two games. The girls were learning new positions
throughout the day and adapted quickly to the role they needed to
play. Keep training hard girls and the results will come. McDonalds
awards went to Allysa for her outstanding goal keeping saves and to
Thalia for her defensive clearances.

HARMONY DAY AND NATIONAL CLOSE THE GAP DAY (THURSDAY 21 MARCH)
On Thursday, 21 March, we are celebrating Harmony Day and National Close the Gap Day. ‘Everyone
belongs’ is the theme. It is a day to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity. It is a day of cultural respect for
everyone who calls Australia home. It is also a day to acknowledge Indigenous people as the first Australians
who lived here for 40,000 years before the first white settlers arrived. Harmony Day reminds us that everyone
deserves the same chance to enjoy the many opportunities available in this great country.
All staff and students are invited to:
Wear a traditional clothing of your country or of a culture you feel close to and comfortable with or an
orange shirt on 21 March (Thursday). PLEASE NOTE THAT ONLY THURSDAY 21 MARCH IS
FOR DRESSING UP, NOT FRIDAY 22 MARCH.
Bring a toy or other interesting objects from your culture for show and tell in class
Participate in the special assemblies (Senior assembly on Thursday 21 March; Junior assembly on
Friday 22 March). Parents are also welcome to attend.
Thank you for your ongoing support,EAL/D TEAM
