1 Newsletter No. 3 - Term 1 Week 3 Thursday 16th February 2017 From the Principal…………… OUR INDIAN VISITORS Our Indian visitors have now returned to Jain International Residential School in India. The visit certainly cemented the relationships between Kalinda Primary School and JIRS. Many discussions were held about activities in which we could involve the children, using world communications. The visit also demonstrated that children across the world all have the same delight in childhood pleasures such as simple games, jokes and fun times, and finding out about the habits and cultures of other children. I cannot thank our host families enough. The children from JIRS had an absolutely wonderful time. Ambuj was thrilled with the close connections the children made with each other and the extent to which the host families cared for the JIRS children. When we took the JIRS children and the host families’ children out they melded as one big family. We visited Hi Sense Arena, went to the basketball, to the Mornington Peninsula and the Melbourne Eye. These were fun activities but also educational activities where all the children explored the city and surrounds, and the sporting venues. Our host families ensured that the children had a terrific time exploring other areas of Melbourne after school and on the weekend. The Indian children were able to get a real sense of our culture as they attended after school activities with the Kalinda children. To be a host family does take time away from family activities. Our host families ensured that the JIRS children were able to participate in the life of children of Kalinda. As the JIRS children were leaving on the bus the other day there were many tears from host children, host families, and a few staff! It really is an amazing experience sharing cultures and lives over 10 days. We look forward to continuing our wonderful relationship with JIRS. CANBERRA VISIT Our Grade 5/6 students from Grades 56K, 56J & 56N are off on the buses to Canberra very early on Monday morning. They will be visiting some very interesting places such as Questacon, Old and New Parliament House, and riding around Lake Burley Griffin, amongst others. We wish them a safe journey and can’t wait to hear some wonderful stories from Canberra on their return. They will be returning next Friday at approximately 5:00pm. If this time changes dramatically, parents will be notified by SMS through Compass. Parents, please make sure your contact details are correct in the Compass program. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

From the Principal……………

OUR INDIAN VISITORS Our Indian visitors have now returned to Jain International Residential School in India.

STAFF CAR PARK Further to our notice in the first newsletter of the year, we still have some parents coming in to the Staff Car Park to drop off or pick up their children. This car park is for STAFF ONLY. Parents must park out in the appropriate areas on Kalinda Road, or surrounding streets. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

DOGS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS As cute and cuddly as your pets may be, we do have a Dog Policy with regard to how, when and where dogs are allowed onto the school property before, during and after school. This is for the safety of our students. Please see the Dog Policy below:

KALINDA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Policy: DOGS Reviewed: 2013

PURPOSE

All members of our school community need to be safe. Dogs are a popular pet for students, but require regulation and management when in our school grounds or visiting classrooms.

To provide a school environment which is safe for students, which is practical, and balances the rights of individuals with the school’s duty of care toward all staff and students. IMPLEMENTATION

Dogs are very popular pets, but can be involved in serious incidents when not controlled or can be unpredictable when excited or frightened.

It is well recognised that young children have underdeveloped peripheral vision and judgement about appropriate ways to deal with dogs, especially unknown ones.

Kalinda PS requests that dogs are not brought into the school grounds within the immediate vicinity of the school buildings area, whether on a leash or not.

When unaccompanied dog/s are found wandering within the school grounds Emergency Procedures should be followed and appropriate action taken, such as students to be brought inside. EXCEPTIONS:

Morning News (show & tell) – parents/teachers must gain prior permission from the Principal, AP or classroom teacher; animals that are brought for such purposes must arrive after 9 am, once class has commenced to avoid concern. All dogs brought in for such purposes must remain on a lead at all times and must not wait near classroom doors/bag areas/wet areas etc. to enable free access to all areas.

Students are to wash hands after the visit.

Responsible pet ownership is part of the school curriculum. EVALUATION This policy will be reviewed as part of the school’s three-year review cycle.

Events Calendar

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS This year is going to be a very exciting year. There are a plenty of performance opportunities throughout the year for the students to be involved in. Three groups that will be starting very shortly are the Kalinda Choir, Glee Club and Band. The Choir will be open to anyone in years 3 to 6 who wishes to join. Rehearsals will be held weekly on Monday at lunch time. Kalinda Glee Club is the group formerly known as the Junior Choir. It will be open to anyone in Foundation to Grade 2. We will get together once a week at recess time to be announced to sing, dance and have fun together. Kalinda Band is a new opportunity for 2017. This group will open to anyone in Grades 5 and 6 who wish to join. To begin with, we will have four or five ‘jam sessions’ for students to come and experience the group to see if it is something they would like to do. Selected students will then be invited to commit to the group for the rest of the year. The band will play music in pop and rock styles but will not be limited to pop and rock instruments. Students who currently play or would like to play any instrument (including voice) are invited to come and have a go in our ‘jam sessions’ on Wednesday at lunch time. Please encourage your child to take up a performance opportunity that may be of interest to them. Paul Todd Performing Arts Teacher

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 1 – Week 2

Welcome to OSH Club News, we have been enjoying plenty of arts and crafts this week OSHClub. Some of our younger children have been enjoying making their own soft tigers and bears out of felt and paper stuffing. They look fantastic! We have also been busy creating a poster outlining our yearly goals for OSHClub as part of our Quality Improvement Plan. Many children have played an active role in designing the poster with their creative ideas and drawings. We have been playing Ship, Shark, Shore and Fruit Salad during our morning sessions, and cricket on the grassy area outside our room. The mini pool table has been a popular choice this week also and so great for developing hand-eye coordination! Outdoor play in the prep playground has involved searching for crystals in the dry river bed and lots of gymnastics practice. Well done Sophie and Thiyara for perfecting you 'pin drops' on the monkey bars! New children have been settling in well and making new friends. The older children have been so amazing, buddying up with the younger ones, and welcoming them to the program. RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

Makes 12

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Tacos

What you need: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small carrot, finely chopped ½ brown onion, finely chopped 1 small stick of celery, finely chopped 2 teaspoons ground paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 500 grams lean minced beef 1 tablespoon tomato paste ¾ cup water Salt and freshly ground pepper 12 taco shells* 1 large tomato, chopped ½ cup chopped peeled cucumber 4 large lettuce leaves, shredded 1 avocado, cut into 12 wedges A few coriander leaves (optional) ½ cup grated Swiss style cheese (or just good old cheddar is fine)

Heat oil in a non-stick frying pan and cook carrots, onion and celery for 5 minutes. Stir in paprika, cumin and coriander. Add minced beef and cook on high heat for 3 minutes, while stirring. Stir in tomato paste and water. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook on low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Heat taco shells according to packet instructions. Garnish shells with cooked meat, chopped tomato, cucumber, lettuce, avocado and coriander leaves if desired. Sprinkle with grated cheese and serve. Note:

You don’t have to use hard taco shells all the time. We have found the kids also enjoy wrapping the meat mixture up together with the salad ingredients in Tortilla wraps which you will find on the supermarket shelf right next to the taco shells.
