The holiday season is approaching! School holidays are opportunities for more family fun and togetherness. It is also an opportune time for parents to improve communication and relationships with their children. Research shows that families who spend quality time together and connect activities at home to what children are learning in school have stronger emotional bonds and better communication. While on trips or outings with your child, take every chance to expose them to new ideas and information, reinforce skills and knowledge, as well as moral values. The Family Time activities you find in this issue are specially designed to encourage more acts of kindness that you may complete together. While most children can demonstrate compassion to a small circle of families and friends, it is also important to help children learn to care about someone outside that circle, such as a new child in class, or the bus driver of their school bus. Understanding and showing compassion is the result of many social emotional skills that are developing in the first few years of your child’s life. Positive values are a form of complex skill that will continue to develop across your child’s life. Raising a caring, respectful, ethical child is and always has been hard work, but it’s something all of us can do, and no work is more important or ultimately more rewarding.
