DAY BEFORE BREAK

Kindness Thermometer:

100%

I woke as the sun snuck pass my window shade and poured into my room. “Today,” I thought, “is my first day at a new school.”

As the unfamiliar recess bell rings in my ears for the first time, bursts of laughter and screams crowd my eardrums as I head down to the playground.

I walk alone. I drag my feet as if they were as heavy as weights. A tear rolls down my face and lands in a neat pile on my shirt.

Even though it is this is a first day for every-one, everyone has already had first days here in the past.

I travel to the edge of the black top, where the foursquare and hopscotch is, but I don’t stop there. I keep going until I reach the fence where it seems like the end of the world, where all living things have disappeared, and the trees have been cursed with stillness.

I hear feet crunching on the cold, dry leaves behind me. A girl comes up to me and says, “would you like to play with us?”

The words seemed like a heaven in my ears.

“We’re playing foursquare, would you like to join?”

Her voice is soft and kind. It is like the warm easy breeze that blows through the trees at mid day.

I shrug and say “sure.”

She leads me over to the game and tells me to hop in line.

I do.

It was September 28th; fall was coming in, people were getting ready for Halloween. But it wasn’t just an ordinary day; it was my mom’s…..birthday. Now this might sound like something you shouldn’t worry about, but you should. I’ll tell you why. In my house, if you don’t remember, you’re proba-bly looking at two weeks of grounding. But if you do remember, then Mom will treat you like the golden child. Anyways, I remembered it was my mom’s birthday because she reminded everyone, and I mean every one. She reminded my dad, sisters, brothers, uncles aunts, grandparents, even strangers like the CVS and Shaw’s cash-iers. So, since I’m the oldest son, I knew I should do something.

And not just because I don’t want to be grounded for two weeks. So I asked my uncle for some money. He only gave me ten dollars. I also had no transporta-tion due to the fact that my dad works and my uncle was sleeping, and that if I asked my mom she’d kill me in a car ac-cident because she does-n’t know how to drive. So I had to ride my sister’s bike which said, “Pretty little princess.” Almost all of my friends said things like, “Can I bor-row your bike” or “Nice one, dude” in sarcastic voices. I went to The Pa-per Store to get a card for my mom. I found one that said “happy birth-day, I hope all your wishes come true”. So I bought it and got out. I started to ride the bike passing stores except one called T.J. Maxx. I

saw this purse that I thought my mom would like. I thought she would like it because it had flowers and hearts and squiggly lines. And she loves that pattern. But it cost ten dollars. That’s how much the card cost! So I went back to The Paper Store and returned the card. But they made me sign some papers. I felt like I was an adult. I have no idea why they made a kid sign papers, but they did anyways. I got my money back and bought the purse. Then, I went and showed it to my neighbor, Barbara. She said it was lovely and told me to hide it. So I did and practiced “Happy Birthday” on the saxophone. I got ready and knocked on the door. As soon as my mom opened the door, I yelled, “Happy Birthday.” I gave her the present and played “Happy Birthday” to my mom on the saxophone.

knew what it looked like when a family needed

someone to take a fam-ily picture for them. So then my dad walked up to the family and then offered to take the pic-

ture for them. The dad in that family smiled and said thank you then

handed the camera to my dad. My dad took the picture. In the picture the whole family was smiling but I think I saw a boy in

the family sticking a piece of gum in his sis-

ter’s hair.

As I was opening the window, the wind was blowing furiously in my face while the sun was shining brightly. It was the middle of summer vacation and I was going to Canobie Lake Park with my family. When we got to Canobie Lake Park we parked in the spot closest to the park and when we all got inside, I was overwhelmed by all the screaming and laughter. Then suddenly I wanted to ride all the roller coasters their and eat cotton candy until I had to go to the dentist everyday! But just then my dad saw another family trying to find someone to take a picture for them. I’m not sure how my dad knew that they needed help but their had been so many times when my family was trying to take a family picture at a special place and we needed someone to take the picture for us that I guess my dad just

Over vacation, I was out-side and having a lot of fun. But it was getting late and my mom usually brings me in but she no-ticed that I was busy and didn’t bring me in until I was totally fin-ished out side.

DewTour

Three days before the surprise day, at the Chateau, my brothers were guessing. They got where we were going right, but our grandparents lied, and so we didn’t know. The surprise day had come and we arrived at the TD Garden in Boston. We knew what we were doing. We were going to a skateboarding show called the DewTour. We got into the show and skateboarders were signing autographs. So Joe and JT threw their hats down to the skateboarders on the floor. But I didn’t have a hat, so I thought I couldn’t get anything auto-graphed. Then, I decided to throw my shoe down. Someone autographed it and threw it back up to our seats in the balcony. We stayed for almost the whole show and liked everything about it, especially the skateboard-ers doing tricks on the ramp. We were appreciative that our grandparents did that for us. And that was something kind someone did for me. By Jared

Kyle’s Surprises

“Kyle I can’t come to your house”. “Why he said talking to me”. “Because your dad and Trevor are sick” you should come to my house” .Okay he said. I hear the back door open. “It’s Kyle,” my mom. Said I was downstairs so Kyle came downstairs. What’s this? I wonder. It’s for my baby cousins. A dinosaur and two cars! So about thirty minuets later they’re here so Kyle and I play with them. They go upstairs so do we. I ask Kyle “Do you want to have a remote control car race”? He says yes. Every bodies playing we play for a half in hour and they had to leave. I asked my mom if I could use her lap-top. She says yes. Kyle helps me make a Roblox account. [You are a Lego person in a Lego world play-ing games]. So I play for a while. Now, it’s Kyle’s turn to use his account. He’s a V.I.P on the game we’re game playing so he can say a magic word and gets $500,000. So I see this guy named Luke bunny who only has $90 and I show Kyle and he starts walking towards Luke bunny's house says his word and donates $500,000 to Luke bunny. I was amazed. Those were Kyle’s surprises. By Noah

Kendra, Julianne and I were talking when a familiar face walked up. She waved with a big smile letting her dimples show.

“Hi,” we all said. We told her our names and she told us hers.

“I’m Hannah,” she told us confi-dently. Then, I remembered.

“Didn’t we do track together in 2nd grade?” she asked.

“Ya, and I always made you do backhand springs!!” We laughed. Julianne knew her from gymnastics and Kendra knew her from a birthday party. “Who’s your teacher?” I wondered.

“Mrs. Rippin,” she answered.

“Me too!!” Kendra and I said excitedly.

“Mine’s Miss. Callahan,” Julianne said sounding a little disappointed.

“We can still play together at recess!” Kendra stated to cheer her up.

“OK,” Julianne said sounding a little better.

“I’ll show you around.” I offered to Hannah.

“Sure,” Hannah answered. So when the bell rang I showed her the cafeteria, the art room, the music room, the library and the drama room. On the way to class, I asked her what her favorite things were and I told her what mine were and a little about the school.

“Were here.” I said, once we reached the 4th grade room. She walked in looking exited and Kendra and I followed. We sat down while Mrs. Rippin welcomed us.

At lunch, I offered for Hannah to sit with me. I helped her get her lunch and we sat down. At recess, we played with all of my friends so she could meet a few more people. At the end of the day, I asked her how she liked her school and she said, “I love it here!!” It really paid off be-cause she is still a great friend!!!

The Carwash

The snow was to the side of the road and people were taking down the lights, tinsel and decorations. Trees sat out-

side of houses. We pulled up to the carwash wear my cousin is the manager. When my mom opened the window to

say hi, he told her, “I’m going to pay for this!! And when you get to the end, ask the man for a wheel shine!” So she

drove through wishing she could pay for it. At the end, the man gave her the wheel shine but still she wanted to

Let’s Play Horsies! “Are you my teacher?” I asked a lady that I saw. “No, sorry.” She said. I ended up asking a lot of people, even the big kids.

I came up to this teacher and started to cry, “I can’t find my teacher!” I wept “Don’t cry, who’s your teacher?” She asked.

“I don’t kn-owwwww!’ I cried. She handed me a tissue. “How old are you?” She asked me. “S-six.” I moaned. “What grade are you going into?” The lady asked.

“First grade.” I replied, Still crying. “And, what is your name?” “Jessica Mur-rrrr-phy.”I said as she brought me over to a teensy-weensy classroom with meanie-peanie kids, I could tell by their facial expressions. I walked in, they all stared at me. “STOP LOOKING AT ME!” I covered my eyes with my hands. This other lady told me to sit in a desk that said Jessica Murphy on it. In the middle of math a girl with short black hair walked in. “You must be Priya.” Mrs. O’Connor said. Priya nodded, as she sat down with the rest of us. At lunch I sat next to a girl that I think had a princess back-pack. Lunch was chicken Pattie. I ate it before the big kids came with the barrel. I could even see Laura sitting on the other side. It was recess and it was awkward cause I had no one to play with, Do they like to play horsies? I thought. Priya looked bored so ran over to her and asked her to play horsies, “Hi, wanna play horsies, I call being the pink one!” I quickly said to her. “No thanks.” she replied. “Then lets kick this ball back and fourth ?” “Okay.” She said. Recess flied by and we were in line. That’s how I showed kindness to my classmate.

KINDNESS ATTACKS: WRITTEN BY: MEGHAN AND JESSICA

The Nice Things My Kids Do For Me

One winter day, my beau-tiful daughter Meghan helped me when I hurt my back. It was a Fri-day morning, and my husband was at work. My kids were at school and I was alone so I slept for a lit-tle while. My house is always a mess so even when I clean the house it always goes back to being messy. When I woke up at 2:15, I had to get up and get my kids from school and when I got up I hurt my back. It was killing me. I thought I pulled a muscle when I was sleep-ing. After everyone was home, we ate dinner. After dinner I went straight to bed to stretch it out.

When I woke up Saturday morning, my back was still killing me so badly I couldn’t do what I usually do on Saturday mornings. So I asked my oldest child, Meghan, to help me out and you know she couldn’t say no to her mom so she really didn’t have a choice so she said yes. She did do all of my chores and she did them well. When I finally got out of bed, the house was so clean. I was speechless. I didn’t know what to say other than thank you and give her a hug. That was the greatest thing anyone has ever done for me.

Meghan never stopped helping me until my pain went away! Once I was much better and my back was not killing me any-more, everything went back to nor-mal. Even my house went back to being a stinky, icky, rotten PIG-STY!!! BY: MEGHAN
