TRANSCRIPT
March, 2013
Many thanks to Mary Ann Sherry and Jeanne Sarna for a spectacular Community
Service Day! Those who attended got to try out new techniques, and play with new toys and
products. It was a great learning experience even if we didn’t keep our cards. In all, the
group made 135 cards for distribution to area seniors.
Last month we lost long-time member Ruth Kerwath. I have some photos of Ruth’s
wonderful fiber art if anyone is interested. Ruth’s family kindly requested donations to be
made to NTGM or the Great Lakes Beadworkers Guild. Donations can be made to NTGM
through Joan Koelsch.
We will be continuing our search for a new home, as the First United Methodist
Church (our previous meeting place) has even less storage now than before the renovation.
Finally, if anyone is interested in entering the Michigan Fine Arts Competition, infor-
mation can be found at http://exhibitions.bbartcenter.org/extrapage.cfm?extraid=1050.
There haven’t been very many fiber artists in the show (Marilyn Prucka had 2 pieces one
year), but that can always be changed!
Happy almost spring,
Debra
From the President:

Directions to St. Paul United Methodist Church – 165 East Square Lake Rd., Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302
From Woodward (to avoid Square Lake traffic): —Coming north on Woodward, pass Square Lake Rd. About .1 mile after the light, just after the Iroquois Club, look for Winthrop on the right. It is the first residential street. —Turn right onto Winthrop, then take an immediate right onto Hillsdale. At the fork, bear right almost to the end. Turn left onto Barrington. Pass the main (upper entrance) of the church on the right and follow Barrington to its end. Turn right onto Mulberry, passing the upper parking lot entrance, and turn right into the lower parking lot entrance.
From Square Lake Rd. eastbound: —You have several options —First, you can do a Michigan left to head north on Woodward. —Or, stay on Square Lake and take the second turn around opportunity. —Go straight across Square Lake to Rutherford. The first right is Barrington. —Follow to the end, turn right into the second (lower) parking lot. —Or, if traffic isn’t bad, go to the 3rd turn around, turn and get into the right lane. —Turn right onto Mulberry and left into the first (lower) lot.

LECTURE: THE EVOLUTION OF ART CLOTH
"Travel through the evolution of "art cloth" from the white fabric still on a bolt to the gorgeous
works created by artists around the globe. This is a close-up look at process and commitment -
the story of love affairs with cloth!"
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: FINISHING TECHNIQUES FOR TEXTILE ARTISTS
Jane will walk participants through a variety of easy surface design techniques, using step-by-
step demonstrations. She will demo a couple of ideas - stretching over a frame, clean cut
edges, using an aluminum rod as a hanging device, using felt as a fused backing....
Transform your own work by adding a few of her ideas to the pieces you make yourself. All lev-
els of experience are welcome in this setting, which is designed to encourage an easy give and
take of ideas.
Please bring one piece each for discussion/advice related to the topic (if you have one)
There is a tutorial on the website that could be printed out before the lecture if you are inter-
ested.
Jane will have a Finishing DVD to sell to those who might be interested.
There is a tutorial on the website that could be printed out before the lecture if you

APRIL 9 & 10, 2013 PROGRAM
PRESENTER BIO: Jacqueline Sullivan 4550 Dora Ln. Lk. Orion, MI 48359 248-882-0166 [email protected] www.jacquelinesullivan.com
I have been a teaching artist in addition to my studio practice for over twenty years working
with adult students at all levels. Courses that I developed are available in all four of my artistic disci-
plines – collage, mixed media, calligraphy and book arts - in single day class formats and as multi-
day workshops.
All of my courses are experiential. I provide students with the opportunity to create and play in
a studio like classroom setting. By establishing an atmosphere of support I am able to encourage stu-
dents to experiment with materials and techniques to create something new and different in their per-
sonal practice. All of my classes include extensive course documentation in the form of well-designed
hand outs with color photography. Students have described my courses as inspiring, organized, well
timed and information filled. The results are always exciting ~ enriching the artistic life of students and
teacher!
APRIL 9 LECTURE: Transition From Paper to Fiber
APRIL 9 & 10 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Acrylics Meet Fiber !

ground to build layers and textures. The texture developed with these tools will then be
highlighted with metallic media. Finished products make great Art Quilts, Table Runners,
and embellishments on other handmade items. A two day workshop would allow students to
work on larger projects and receive more one-on-one critique from the instructor.

Goals and Policies: The goal of the NTGM library is to provide all members with free access to books and
other materials on a wide range of fiber art-related topics. As with any public library,
we need to be sure books stay in circulation by ensuring that they are returned in a timely fashion. Please be considerate of other members and try to return your materi-
als by the next meeting. You must be a current member to check out any materials.
If you check out books and cannot come to the next month’s meeting, please find
someone to bring them in (check your NTGM directory) or mail them, so that other
members may have access as well. Many people did a fabulous job of this last year. We realize that last minute things come up that may prevent you from attending a
meeting (illnesses, etc.), but people do wait for a book to come back in.
Due to the popularity of the library, we must limit the number of materials checked
out by a member to a maximum of 5 per month
If something bad happens to your book (the P.O. loses it, the dog eats it, you spilled
ice cream over it at the beach, etc.), please expect to replace it for the Guild. If you have friends who are not members who would like to use this resource, please en-
courage them to join. YOU are responsible for any items checked out in your name.
Finally, we will continue to make reminder calls the Monday before meetings, if it is
helpful.
As usual, if you have any suggestions for particular books, or topics you feel warrant
more books or DVDs, please email me ---I can’t remember items mentioned at the meet-ings!
Please DO NOT return items to the church office!!
