From The Pastor: “Needle & Thread”

In the book “You Are the Needle and I Am the Thread, Pamela Joy Anderson shares a prayer which a Muslim convert to Christianity said:

"O God, I am Mustafah the tailor, and I work at the shop of

Muhammad. The whole day long I sit and pull the needle and the thread through the cloth. O God, you are the needle and I am the thread. I am attached to you and I follow you. When the thread tries to slip away from the needle, it becomes tangled and must be cut so it can be put back in the right place. O God, help me to follow you wherever you lead me. For I am really only Mustafah the tailor, and I work in the shop of Muhammad on the great square."

During Lent we will focus on what it means to follow Jesus. What it means to be the thread. You may remember from the message on Feb. 18th that Jesus asked many of his disciples to “follow me.” It didn’t matter if they were spiritual or not. It didn’t matter whether they followed the Jewish laws or not. Everyone was invited to follow. They did not have to meet specific requirements before they could follow. They were simply invited.

So are you following? During the Sundays leading up to Easter we will look at what it means to be a follower of Jesus because that’s how the disciples started their journey with Jesus. The call to follow changed their lives. I will see you on Sunday .

Christian Education by Katharine Keller

“...growing disciples of Jesus Christ by studying and living the Word.”

through these next few months. They will be confirmed on Sunday, May 20th!

Pioneer Club

Come share the fun, food and learning on Wednesdays at 5:00pm in the Education Building with Miss Katharine and her volunteers!

March Outdoor Movie: “Wonder”

Join us for the movie, Wonder, on the outdoor patio, Friday, March 16th at 6:30pm. “Wonder” stars Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson and is adapted from the book, “Wonder.” This is a story of the Pullman family whose youngest child, Auggie, is a boy born with facial

differences. When Auggie enters mainstream elementary school for the first time, his journey united his family, his school and his community, and proves that you can’t blend in, when you were born to stand out. This is a great family movie… and a free event with popcorn and snacks provided! Bring a friend and a chair!

Facilitated by Pastor Fay and Dr. David, “The Table” is a learning/study opportunity for adults, held at 9:30am Sunday mornings. The class is currently doing the Lenten study, “He Chose the Nails.” Why not come to worship at 8:00am and cross the street to the Missions Center for class, or come to

class first and then worship at 10:50am in the Koinonia Room… and please bring your Bible!

Sidewalk Ministry

Mark your calendars for March 17th for our Annual Rummage Sale in the GCUMC parking lot… and Sidewalk will be participating in the sale!

Please help support the children's ministry with your donations of sale worthy items. Call Sherry Hussein (480)529-9621 if you have items to donate, and we’ll gladly pick up items from your home. Please do not drop items off at the Church, as no storage space is available. All proceeds from the sale help send children in our ministry to Church summer camp.

The girls & ladies of Sidewalk will also be decorating cupcakes to sell at the Eggstravaganza, March 25th. Proceeds from Sidewalk’s sale items will be donated to the House of Refuge that helps homeless families. This is also the charity our Sidewalk ministry offerings go to this year.

Sidewalk Ministry’s upcoming schedule includes:

3/3: The Clown Ministry from Fountain Hills

3/10: Regular Sidewalk

3/17: Regular Sidewalk with crafts by Sandy Mueller

4/7: Regular Sidewalk with crafts by Sandy Mueller

4/21: Sidewalk at the Park with games and cookout

We still need more Shepherds—no matter what gifts/talents they might have—including simply listening to and talking with the children. Interested persons should please contact Ken Hopkins at (850)217-0594 or [email protected]. All volunteers must undergo a background check.

Confirmation Class

Confirmation is underway. We have eight students – Lorelei and

Ben Clise, Morgan Tucker , Cheyenne Velock, Andrew and Karlee Caravella, Sidnee and Shea Major. Please pray for these young people as they study together

Communion During Lent

Communion will be offered outside by the sculpture of Jesus after each Sunday worship service during Lent (March 11, 18th and 25th). The only

exception will be March 4th when we will observe our normal monthly communion in worship.

A fabulous day with Christian sisters was had by those who attended this year’s 1-Day Retreat.

Get Ready for Eggstravaganza!

Sunday, March 25th, from 3:00pm—5:00pm is our community spring event

sponsored by Team Outreach. This is a free, family-oriented, fun-filled afternoon, and Matt, the awesome DJ, who’s provided great entertainment, is returning! We are bringing back the wet slide–so, kids–bring a towel. We will also have a bungee trampoline, the ultimate obstacle inflatable, as well as one for young children. There will be a “candy hunt”, face painter and balloon artist, pony rides and petting zoo. There is much more, so we hope you can attend. That afternoon will also be the last opportunity to bid on the Silent Auction items. Remember, there is also free food! This is a great time for all, so we hope you bring friends!

What we need from you:

Hands and feet to help out that day

Individually-wrapped candy (chocolate pieces are okay)

Costco-sized cookies

Bottled water

You may bring in the items any time the week before. Please contact Katharine if you can help or if have questions about the day!

Country News from Bob Have you checked out the Country Western service at 5:00pm lately? Our musical group One In the Spirit has grown to 14 singers and musicians. New musicians have

joined the group, giving the music a distinctively country sound. They provide the music for us most of the time on all except the last Sunday when Ron & Chris Houser, Tara Jones (and her incredible violin-“fiddle” in western talk), John and Carol LaViolette bring us their great western music.

As we move into the Spring and it stays lighter outside longer, I hope you will pay us a visit!

Peace and joy,

Bob Deits

Fat Tuesday Pancake Dinner

The Genesis Project volunteers and guests want to thank Team Outreach for all their work in putting together another successful Fat Tuesday pancake dinner. We are blessed having the support of our church and local community!

“Thank You” from One of our Youth Who went on the Summer Mission Trip...

Hi, My name is Karlee and this is my second mission trip. I just wanted to thank you and tell you how much I appreciate all you do for us youth. This mission trip was unforgettable. During the trip, I got to experience different types of work. Some days I worked at Mission Medical, which is a non-profit organization, that helps people who can’t afford medical care. While I was there, I learned how to do flooring which was a new experience for me. In total, we almost finished 4 whole rooms! On Wednesday, I was able to switch to a different work site and work at a place called Crossfire. When I was there, I helped sort donated items and bag linens. It was a blast to hear the testimony of John, the guy who helped run Crossfire. Even though I had a blast working during the week, what really impacted me the most was the evening worship services. I felt like I really connected with God and got closer to him. At one of the services, we wrote on a piece of paper something we wanted to challenge ourselves with spiritually and we put it in little bottles. It’s just a reminder that God is always with us and will help us grow in our faith. All of these amazing experiences would not have been possible without your support and help. So I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done. Sincerely, — Karlee Caravella, Age 14

Music Notes Douglas J. Benton Director of Music Ministries

…Sunday mornings at the 10:50am

Praise & Worship Service!

Together we’ll lift our hearts, souls and

spirits… and you’ll be sure to feel uplifted and

energized when you leave afterwards!

It’s a great way to start off the week!

The Gold Canyon Arts Council will present Bryan Anthony, one of the most popular vocalists of our time, on Friday, March 16 at 7:30pm. Is he a jazz singer? A pop singer? A Broadway singer? Yes – to all the above! This is a ticketed event and discount coupons will be available for our church on Sunday, March 11th at the Welcome Center and in the Church Office during the week. Please remember to bring a can of food for the Food Bank.

Finally, our Chancel Choir will present Theodore Dubois’ intensely moving The Seven Last Words of Christ on Good Friday, March 30th at 7:00pm. Our Choir will be joined by soloists: Cindy Hoff, soprano; Glenn Bennett, tenor; and Paul Buza, baritone and will be accompanied by Mark Ramsey, organ and Keith Kassner, timpani. We will also be joined by several members of the Arizona Cantilena Chorale, who performed so well for us last month!

To really have an understanding of Easter, one must go through the profound experience of Good Friday. If Christ does not die, he does not need to be resurrected, and our lives are indeed lost! Come and be a part of this incredible experience on Good Friday!

Next up? Easter, and all that Easter means to the world – even now, as it has over the past 2000+ years! “Christ is Risen! He is Risen, indeed! Alleluia! .

Agape love and blessings to all,

Doug

March is here! This is going to be a fabulous month! Spring is ready to “spring!” There are opportunities for travel and vacations to be planned, and, of course, a whole line-up of a variety of music, concerts and activities in which to participate. It’s gonna be great!

The first event is one I have been looking forward to for a couple of years: Dr. Isabelle Demers, Organist, one of the finest and most sought after concert organists in the world, will present us with a spectacular concert on Sunday, March 4 at 2:00pm on our 3-manual Rodgers Trillium 967 organ with MIDI. She received the highest honor for her Doctoral Dissertation at the Julliard School, New York City, studying with Paul Jacobs. In the few years since, she has performed on most of the major organs in the world, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, the 6-manual Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia – the largest playable pipe organ in the world, and First Congregational Church of Los Angeles – the largest Church pipe organ in the world, as well as major instruments in China, Europe, Africa and Australia. With the exception of the month of August – her vacation time! – she is performing someplace nearly every week! At the same time, she is Chair of the Organ Department at Baylor University in Texas, one of the most prestigious organ departments in the country. She literally does more with her two feet, than most people can do with their two hands! This is one Concert you don’t want to miss! I promise you, she will blow your mind with her incredible technique, musicianship, energy and personality!

This concert is open to the public at no charge as an offering will be received. Dr. Demers fee has already been paid for by an anonymous donor, so all the proceeds will go towards our Pipes for the Organ Fund. Come, bring your family, friends and neighbors to experience this exceptionally talented concert artist! Please remember to bring at least one non-perishable food item per person for our GCUMC Food Bank.

Next, some very disappointing news: one of the world’s most incredible Handbell Soloist, Erin Downey, has had to cancel her concert on Sunday, March 11, due to some family health issues. I am pleased to announce, however, that we have rescheduled her concert for next year on Sunday, February 17, 2019. She apologizes for having to cancel. I told her no problem, family always comes first, after God.

Four pastors are on-call to make visits to members and friends of Gold Canyon UMC. Please feel free to call the church office at (480)982-3776 and one of the pastors will respond to your request. After hours, you may call or email one of the pastors directly:

Rev. Fred Steinberg Senior Pastor [email protected] 480.982.3776

Rev. Bob Deits Associate Pastor [email protected] 602.615.6634

Rev. Fay Quanstrom Associate Pastor [email protected] 480.458.8420

Dr. David Worley Director, Congregational Care [email protected] 970.821.5404

If you know someone in the congregation who is hospitalized, ill at home and/or needs prayers of the community, please let one of the pastors or the church office know so they can be included on the prayer list.

In addition, if you or someone you know within or beyond our parish would like a friendly visit, a listening ear, or a home-cooked meal, please let us know. Caring for others in the GCUMC fellowship of believers is shared by clergy & lay caregivers. In addition to the pastoral staff and lay caregivers are listed below:

Stephen Ministers, highly-trained lay people, provide quality, confidential, Christ-centered support to those experiencing grief, illness, divorce, etc.

Trained Lay Congregational Care Ministers (CCMs) share a ministry of loving spiritual care: visits, prayer, Holy Communion, music, meals, errands and more.

You are invited to join the Congregational Care Ministry by contacting Rev. Fay Quanstrom, or Stephen Ministries by contacting Katharine Keller.

PRAY! When? Where? How? Rev. Fay Quanstrom

GCUMC offers numerous prayer helps that are available to everyone:

The WEEKLY PRAYER LIST is finalized Thursday mornings and consists of prayer requests that have come to us on Sunday and during the week. It’s inserted in the Sunday bulletin for your use at home… post it and use it! Pray for one category of needs each day. Prayer request cards are on the lecterns near each door. When you write a request, please complete all the information so our pastoral care team is able to pray and follow up more effectively.

You can become a PRAYER PARTNER, who receives the prayer list electronically each Tuesday, by completing the form on the reverse of the Sunday prayer list and placing it in the offering plate. You may also call the Church Office during the week to become a prayer partner.

Caring intercessors meet for PRAYER AND HEALING on Wednesdays from 11:45-12:45 in the Koinonia Room. Anyone is welcome to come with a need or a desire to share in this special time.

The campus PRAYER WALK begins at the office door, where on the wall to the right you may pick up a “map” that describes a walking route around our buildings and prayer suggestions as you make your way from place to place. The prayer walk can also be used at home to structure your prayer. Physically walking the premises is helpful but not required for the prayer walk guide.

Our PRAYER WALL is located just behind the Jesus sculpture. You are welcome to use the paper and pencil provided for writing your request. Spend some time pondering the shepherd qualities of Christ, His proximity to His lamb, and His sheltering arms, as you pray. Then fold your written request and tuck it into a crevice in the wall, just as people have done for centuries at Jerusalem’s Wailing Wall

How Can We Help? MindMenders

Cancer Support Group provides spiritual support, love, friendship and a helping hand to cancer patients, caregivers and their families and meets weekly on Wednesdays at 11:00am in the Emmaus Room. Contact Dee Ashe at (480)685-7175 or [email protected].

Emotional Wellness Support Group is intended for those who have completed the “Emotional Wellness” class, and provides tools for self-understanding and helping others, as well as those who are suffering from depression. If you wish to attend, but have not yet taken the class, please contact Fay Quanstrom [email protected].

Grief Support Group is for those who have experienced a major loss such as the death of a loved one or divorce. The leader of the group, Rev. Bob Deits, has been working extensively with these issues for 36 years and addresses them in his book, Life After Loss, now in its 6th edition. The book chronicles the loss of his wife, June, and is now available in the office for $14.00. Please accept Bob’s invitation to attend the Grief Support group he leads every Monday from 1:00pm—2:00pm in the Martha Room (Missions Center). For questions or to speak with Bob privately, you may call him at (602)615-6634.

I remember the way he would tease and tell jokes, or hide things so we’d think they were gone. The way he told stories and made us laugh, like when he’d put silly words in a song.

He also had a serious side and made sure we knew right from wrong. He could be tough when he needed to be, but he loved us all along.

He treated people with respect and showed them he truly cared. He got to know them personally and wanted to know how they fared.

He liked working with numbers and people, whether as loan officer or CEO. Employees were always like family to him and he treated them so they would know.

He loved his family, community and God and served all three through the years. A man of integrity, character & faith, not afraid to be seen shedding tears.

I remember the smell of Old Spice on him and the way he combed back his hair. The fedora and coat worn to church & to work, suit and tie and shoes polished with care.

He was never afraid to say that he loved us, or tell us how proud he was, too. I just wish I could hear him say it again, but for now remembering will do.

I look forward to the day when I see him again, as you see I miss him a tad. The arms I’ll fall into beside those of my Lord will be those of my precious Dad!

To Text or Not to Text

It makes me nuts when I text someone but they don’t answer! How about you? Many of us have children, or grandchildren, who grew up “teething” on technology for Pete’s sake! I mean, it’s second

nature to them to use something electronic. You might even argue that it’s first nature for someone you know. Yet when they are with us, it seems that the phone never leaves their hands. They are in constant communication with others and their fingers and thumbs move at lightning speed. If you ask, they may tell you they are “talking” to a friend. But somehow they seem to always miss our texts, or reply hours or even days later. Many times I have asked myself how that can be? While reading The Road to Enchantment (by Kaya McLaren) this past year, I loved this statement –“texts are what people do when they want to avoid intimacy, or any contact really, but look like they're not." At first glance that’s kind of harsh. It made me feel a little guilty and I considered quitting texting as a form of communication. But in reality, texting itself is not bad. It serves a great purpose as a form of communication. It is perfect for conveying brief messages, setting appointments, passing on a quick topic for an upcoming meeting, confirming a time and location, giving directions, saying “I love you” when you don’t have time to call, sending a picture along with extending a quick hello and letting someone know you’ll call later, etc. It is also a tool that can be used like the author described in The Road to Enchantment. It can allow us to be somewhat anonymous, avoid difficult or deep conversation and stick to the shallow, hide from conflict or uncomfortable subjects, and sometimes even say hurtful things more boldly than we would in person. What is the result of the above habits? Quite often it is isolation, depression, and shallow or damaged relationships. Now none of this is meant to bash texting and the use of technology, or say it is bad. However, I can’t help but think - “isn’t this sometimes what we do to God?” - avoid intimacy and connection, hide, back away from going to

church regularly, pray superficially, go it on our own? And we often end up with the results just mentioned. It’s easy to do, get cocky, and decide we have it all under control. We quit truly communicating with God, and just “text” him. BUT, we need God and we need one another!! We were created to rely upon one another. The superficial and solo approach seldom has a good outcome. As you walk through your next month, think about how you are connecting with others and with God. Are you hiding behind a wall you’ve built, are you simply “texting” God when you should be talking to him, opening your heart, building a relationship? Could you use a little assistance getting out of the shallows and venturing into the deep water; developing a conversational and prayerful relationship with God and others, instead of just a texting relationship? If so, consider asking for a Stephen Minister to reach out to you. This is a fellow Christian who can listen, assist in providing perspective, and above all, support you while maintaining complete confidentiality. Reach out for either by emailing [email protected], or checking the box beside “Desire a Stephen Minister” on the Sunday morning attendance pad.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up

the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. Again, if two lie

together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is

not quickly broken.” - Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NRSV)

HoneyDo Ministry

The HoneyDo Ministry wants to help you stay in your home as long you are able. You want the option to age in place. The HoneyDo Ministry can make your home a safer place for you to continue living at home.

A new service is offered by the HoneyDo Ministry that may prevent injury to yourself or loved ones. Falls in the home are the top cause of emergency room visits. And after an injury, the option to stay in your home may be limited. Because we care about our church community, this is our way to “take care of our own”. Our members are able to do a assessment of your home---inside and out. They will especially look for hazards that may cause a fall or pose a fire risk. The assessment would be at NO COST to you. There is no obligation on your part.

Many times, they may be able to replace batteries, or change out lightbulbs at the same time. Most of the hazards would be a simple fix for the crew. Hundreds of repairs have already been completed by the Gold Canyon United Methodist HoneyDo Ministry team. If the job is

We are women with a Purpose!

"United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ;

to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the

global ministries of the church."

We are faith, hope and love in action.

FAITH: Thousands of women participate in our reading programs and educational opportunities annually to grow spiritually, become more deeply rooted in Christ and put faith into action.

Our Christian faith is extremely important to all UMW members, but how do we strengthen and show our faith? We have numerous opportunities in UMW: our Reading Program introduces us to topics in five areas of study; our meetings provide us with opportunities to pray, to learn and to show our faith to others; Response magazine gives us insights into mission work in our country and around the world; Mission instructs us in spiritual growth, social issues, and geographic areas; UMW Seminar Studies provide us with guidelines for holding workshops in our area on a variety of subjects. There is no limit to living out our purpose as children of God and members of UMW!

Paula Blessman of Blessman International spoke at our February meeting on Days for Girls ministry. Days for Girls is a global ministry that addresses the need for dignity, safety and education in South Africa’s young female population by directly helping girls access high-quality, sustainable feminine hygiene kits. The next Days for Girls hygiene kit assembly workshop will be February 22 from 1:00pm—4:00pm in the Missions Center at GCUMC.

Please join us for our next meeting on March 17 when we take a Field Trip to Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa. Sunshine Acres opened in 1954 and provides a loving, wholesome, Christian home for children who are separated from their parents, and helps them establish long-term relationships with stable parental figures that prepares them for success in adult life. More than 2,000 children have passed through their doors!

RSVPs are required, and those going on the Tour should meet by the church office by 9:40am to coordinate carpools. The facilities tour starts at 10:30am and will last for 1.5 hours. Don’t worry about a long walk as the tour is done on golf carts! We’ll also have some time after the tour to wander and shop at the Sunshine Acres Bazaar (their upscale thrift store and boutique), with lunch to follow at Crackers & Co. Café in Mesa.

To RSVP or get more info on the Field Trip, watch in the church bulletin or contact Carol Johnson at [email protected] or (602)750-2008.

SCRIP Bus/Van Program

Remember… the funds earned from the SCRIP Program purchase gas, licenses, insurance and maintenance on our two vehicles used to bring people to our church and take our Youth to events like the annual Mission trip. Have you seen our new covered structure that helps to protect our vehicles from the Arizona sun and heat?

Also, remember… the SCRIP Program costs those using it absolutely nothing! All you have to do is use any —or all—of the below methods to do your shopping! Bashas’, Fry’s and www.Smile.Amazon.com help non-profit organizations—like GCUMC—by giving a rebate on purchases. The Bashas & Fry’s Shoppers cards must be obtained from and/or be connected to GCUMC.

You can watch our 8:00am, 9:30am and 10:50am worship services LIVE by going to www.Livestream.com/accounts/11627355. Be sure to click on “FOLLOW” so you’ll be notified any time GCUMC is streaming live —

which makes it even easier! Weekly sermons can also be viewed on our website, our Facebook page, or at www.vimeo.com/goldcanyon.

Weekly Personal Prayer & Healing Time

If you would like someone to pray with you one-on-one about any matters, please remember that there are people ready to help lift your needs to the Lord

in prayer every Wednesday from 11:45am—12:45pm in the Koinonia

Room.

This is not a worship service, but an opportunity to stop by for prayer ministry and then continue on with your

day.

Is YOUR information correct in the Church Directory? Would you like to update your photo?

Would you like to set-up/modify online giving?

You can do that and much more using GCUMC’s online directory, AccessACS! If you aren’t already using it, but

would like to, just send an email to “[email protected]” with “AccessACS” in the subject line and we’ll send you an email with login

instructions.

You’ can also view the Church Directory on your phone using the Church Life app!
