July 2014 From the Archives of Msgr. Slinger This is the time of year when we take notice of plants and crops, growing tall and strong in the summer sunshine. We are well familiar with the parable of the sower and the seeds he plants upon the ground. Jesus compares the word of God, which is intended to produce fruit in our lives, to the seed sowed in the earth by the farmer. The seeds of life are sown into us at Baptism and they are then tended to through the celebration of the sacraments and daily prayer. Rain almost always produces positive results. The water may run off and eventually end somewhere else, but the earth will respond and it will produce something fruitful. The falling rain reminds us that God is patient and will persist with his word until he gets a response. As we begin to hear the various parables of Jesus, we would do well to remember that the parables were effective teaching tools of the times. Those who were open and willing to reflect upon what Jesus said always received more; those with closed or distracted minds received less. The Church adapted the parables to its early situation. Remember it was new, small, and persecuted. The men and women proclaiming the Gospel faced people who were shallow minded, hard of heart, and filled with worldly preoccupations. Ironically today’s messengers face the same situation. Prior to the Second Vatican Council, the study of Sacred Scripture was not usually encouraged. This teaching has changed. The more we know about Scripture, the more we learn about God and ourselves. We believe that God’s Word is alive and has the power to change our lives. Sacred Scripture can not only guide us through the difficulties of life; it can also enrich our souls and draw us more deeply and intimately into our relationship with God. Taking some time each day to read the Bible or to attend Mass nourishes that seed within us, and as the parable teaches, gives us an abundant harvest to enjoy and share. As an aside, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has a great website with the daily readings and usually a short reflection on the readings. Their website is: www.usccb.org . The site has other resources and information which you may find to be helpful, especially about reading and working with the Bible. Of course if we do not nourish the seed, then the seed fails to grow and mature. I think the following reflection best explains what I mean. I am not sure who the author is: The word of God is to the human heart what a seed is to the earth. However, just as a seed needs soil, so the word needs a receptive heart. The earth responds to the rain and sun so that even the desert blooms. But the arid human heart has the power to resist so that it remains barren. Lord, soften our hearts with your grace, open them to your gentle love, so that the precious seeds of your word may take root in our hearts, and bear much fruit. May each of us seek to be nourished and strengthened by God’s word, and may it bear much fruit in our lives, and in the lives of those we encounter.

July 2014

From the Archives of Msgr. Slinger

This is the time of year when we take notice of plants and crops, growing tall and strong in the summer sunshine.

Their website is: www.usccb.org.

MEDITATION

Follow my ways and I will lead you

by Thomas Merton

Follow my ways and I will lead you To golden-haired suns, Logos and music, blameless joys, Innocent of questions And beyond answers. For I, Solitude, am thine own Self: I, Nothingness, am thy All. I, Silence, am thy Amen.

If not, check it out at www.stannefairlawnnj.org

This is our new logo—our new brand—that will be appearing everywhere from the website to letterhead to fliers and advertisements.

The logo was designed to represent our parish as a community—a family—centered

around our faith. The individual edifices around the cross represent not only the

physical building of the church, but the people who make up that building,

for it is WE who are the Church of Saint Anne.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council Representatives:
