THURSDAY JUNE 22ND, 2011, 4.35pm: SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO FIGHT WITH MUSIC. This mural, by Park artist Lynden Mallinson, was designed forPyramid performers to contemplate as they wait to go on stage. Social cohesion is something weve been working towards since the 1980s, said Michael Eavis,as he strolled through the festival yesterday. This is socialism with a small s; politics with a small p. We walk the walk, rather than just talk the talk; everyonehere knows what were about, thats why theyre not chucking beer bottles around. Photo: David Mirzoeff

A leg and belly stretch from the Pyramid to the heart of the Markets with glimpses of themagical and mind-bending in Kidzeld, Avalon, Theatre and Circus and West Holts.

Time: allow 2.5 hours / View rating:Refreshment rating:

1 After a quick half from the Cider Bus in the Village Green and a toe-tap at theBandstand, in the lane opposite, set off East along the Markets alley towards MeetingPoint, which was commissioned by Michael and built in Appledore Dockyard in the

nineties. The opulent ower arrangements are by Bob St Barb, creator of the FestivalOfce window boxes.

2 Through the trees glimpse red-roofed Goose Hall the festival canteen serving 15,000meals to hungry litter-pickers, loo-cleaners, site crew and green police. No mean feat. The Do funny (Michaels Mums name for the outdoor dining room) is built from oldparts of the Pyramid stage.

3 Take a right at the cross-roads and take a moment for a beer and quick mid-morningboogie at the Meeting Point Bar.

4 Before you get sucked into the Markets, head Northwards into the colourful world ofthe Kidzeld, where you might catch a glimpse of Rastamouse or the Gruffalo. Make aclockwise circuit of Kidzeld, enjoying the shows, arts, crafts, face paints, games, ridesand a climb up the magic castle at the Northern end of the eld.

5 If you can drag yourself away, leave the Kidzeld by the Eastern exit and wander intothe Acoustic eld or Normans Close, named after the elds former owner. The gloriousblue Kyam tent with big scoops is the Acoustic Stage, formerly host to rock legends RayDavis, Marianne Faithful and this year to Suzanne Vega.

6 Spend a moment in the ickering gloom of the Pilton Palais Cinema Tent to sampletheir eclectic line-up before a quick half and a packet of crisps at The Cockmill Barnext door, (or Common Ground caf for something more sober) before exiting by theSouthwest corner

7 Head South through Glebeland, passing the Blazing Saddles stage on your left, takingin some high-energy theatrical acrobatics at the Astrolabe. Take the right exit and pausein the Hurly Burly Caf for tea and cake. If darkness has already fallen, watch out fordistortions of time and space by Dream Engine.

8 Turn right into the Circus Field, keeping an eye out for zip-wire act Pirates of theCarabina, or astounding aerial show Insect Circus. Spend a moment marvelling at thisspectacular world.

9 Take a left and head to the West Holts stage for one of the undoubtedly amazingafternoon acts, and refresh yourself at Brothers or West Holts bar. The food in this eldis amazing shishas and the best mint tea on site at Moorish; French sausages and redwine at Le Grand Boeuf - and guess what at the Goan Seafood Curry Shop.

10 Turn back North up the main Market drag, if you can still move, and buy yourself thecustom-made guitar and driftwood key ring you never knew you needed. Try to ignorethe temptations of the Strumpets with Crumpets or equally seductive Tapas Patatas, onyour way so youve still got space for a nal snack at the Filipino kitchen... yum.

BADGE OF BELONGINGHow long do you wear your wristband?

    By AMABEL CROWE

WHY DO some people wear theirwristband for months, even years? Per-haps its a natural human instinct theneed to belong. Keeping them on is like being part of the massive festival-goingcommunity all year round. Festivalsare amazing at shaking off social con-ventions suddenly it is OK to talk tostrangers, to have a pint for breakfastor to wear a tutu everywhere. Whetherworker or punter you are part of some-thing at a festival. Although your oldfestival wristband is not a license to be

drunk at 11am and wear a tutu to work,it is a way of breaching the real-world/festival-world divide. Where are all thefestival people in real life?! Sometimesit seems that the amazing, wondrouslyfriendly, happy people at festivals sim-ply do not exist outside the gates. Justas festivals break down social conven-tions, the stress of twenty-rst centurylife outside soon erodes the peace andlove lifestyle. Those old wristbands areverication that we are the same peo-ple, both sides of the fence

    OCALLAGHAN... FRID AY 2 4TH J UNE, 2011

IT IS NO accident that the Old Englishword Orgasm begins with the letterO. O is for Omega, the be all and endall. O is for the human facial expressionof ecstasy. O is for Om Shanti, the peacethat passes all understanding!

The great philosopher Wilhelm Reichargued powerfully that orgasm couldsave the world. I agree!

Likewise, the esteemed auteur,Woody Allen, updated this thinking fora new generation with the invention ofthe Orgasmatron in his marvellous epicSleeper.

Well, we are all sleepers through lifeuntil fully awakened to the full forceof Chi, through the transformationalpower of orgasm!

O is also for the Stone Circle, sym- bolic of all that we hold dear in youthculture today. As I have written in my book, it was my second husband Raviwho introduced me to the joys of Tan-tra. Ravi was able to maintain an erec-

tion for hours, and I would sit astride hispowerful thighs staring into his eyesDear Ravi, he taught me so much, andalthough he looked rather frog like withhis large belly and bulging eyes he hada natural afnity for gold which heattracted rapidly in his travel agency business, but that is another story.

Festival goers, I urge you on this midsummers eve to express your deepestself. Gather at the Stone Circle, now isthe moment for sacred Congress! And asthe great Paul Simon sings, if you cant be with the one you love, love the oneyoure with!angelclyt.wordpress.com @angelclyt

The Scrut Run How Funny is That? By BRIGID McCONVILLE, DIRECTOR OF THE WHITE RIBBON ALLIANCE

MOST OF YOU wouldnt dream of making a racist joke, and youd feel uncom-fortable around people who do. Same goes for aggression against gay people. Its just wrong, right? So why is it still okay to make remarks about girls and women?

We hear them all the time, and frequently from the same young men who pridethemselves on not being racist or homophobic. When someone misses the ball: dont be such a girl. When you question it: But its a fact women cant play football!.

Women arent funny. (Youd never generalize like that about a black person). No but black people have got Chris Rock! (Yes, but women have got Tina Fey,Miranda Hart, Shazia Mirza) Theyre not funny.

MILF. Hey older women, you should be so lucky! (FILF is kind of different, isnt it?)

The Scrut Run. Thats when older boys drive by the school to take a look at theyoung girls who theyd L to F.

Does all this matter? Zoom out to a global view.In modern conict, its more dangerous to be a woman than to be a soldier: 70%

of those killed in wars these days are women or children. Girls in some Africancountries are more likely to die in childbirth than to go to school. Of the 188 electedleaders in the world, 16 are women. Young women are six times more likely to haveHIV and AIDs than young men. Women do two thirds of the worlds work, earn10% of the worlds income and own one per cent of the property.

Thats bad, but thats not England Ok, lets talk about England. Here womendont get the same pay as men (in the City they get a third less for the same work).Every year, 30,000 women a year lose their jobs because they are pregnant and threemillion women in the UK experience rape or domestic violence. Anxiety, eatingdisorders, self-harm and depression are endemic among girls. Nearly half of youngpeople know girls who have been pressurized or forced into sex; nearly half knowgirls who have been hit by their boyfriends. In this country there are more MPscalled Dave than there are women in Parliament. 96% of company bosses are men.

In many countries, women arent even allowed to own land. It happens in the UKtoo; farmers still pass the land on to their sons. And what about the music business?

Leading US journalists Kristoff and Wudunn argue in their book Half the Skythat the liberation of women is the great political struggle of the coming century just as the abolition of slavery was to the past. Theyre not joking.

Nothing New Under the Sun SUNDAY 24TH JUNE 1990

Awopbopaloobop By CASPAR LLEWELLYN SMITHCATACLYSMS AND crises are rocking economies and the environment, andanyone whose growing up has involved the idea that pop and the state-of-the na-

tion are linked reecting and in turn informing upon each other might like toask: whats the meaning of music now? Some will argue that weve reached a kindof cultural plateau, a state of homogeneity distinguished chiey from other eras byits reliance upon the steady exhumation of the past. Everything is available, fromany era, from anywhere, and every opinion is given equal billing; and in this white-collar age of over-abundance, little is afforded much value. The capacity for music tochallenge current orthodoxies feels increasingly circumscribed, and the creative de-struction voiced by a Little Richard is now something prized by the neo-cons and theneo-liberals.

It is in this context that those acts who understand that its their duty to grapplewith such questions at least deserve attention. Of those playing the festival thisyear, controversy has surrounded U2 in particular, because of their tax arrange-ments, but also because of what some see as their bombast their naked desireto mean something as pop culture warps and the world turns. But even someonewhod baulk at describing themselves as a fan can see this: rather a band with anappreciation of the tightrope they walk, a band with an ethical framework for theiractions, than one whose rhetoric will only ever ring empty.
