Labour senator Ruud Koolesaid swearing such an oathdoes not fit with a modernmonarchy and would be "ar-chaic".

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Eu-ropean scientists said Thurs-day that a new laboratoryexperiment shows the Earth'score is likely much hotter thanlast reported 20 years ago.

It's not that the iron core ofour planet has warmed, butrather that the technique usedto estimate its heat previouslywas flawed, researchers said inthe journal Science.

Newer techniques have al-

lowed experts at theEuropean Synchro-tron Radiation Facil-ity to determine thetemperature nearEarth's center to be6,000 degrees Cel-sius (10,832 degreesFahrenheit).

That is about1,000 degrees C hot-ter than an experi-ment conducted byGerman researchersin 1993.

Researchers areanalyzing the solid

iron core of the Earth, whereextreme temperatures andpressure result in a hard cen-ter, while the surrounding ironat lower temperatures of about4,000 degrees Celsius remainsliquid.

"We have developed a newtechnique where an intensebeam of X-rays from the syn-chrotron can probe a sampleand deduce whether it is solid, liquid or partially moltenwithin as little as a second, using a process known diffrac-tion," said Mohamed Mezouarfrom the ESRF.

"And this is short enough tokeep temperature and pressureconstant, and at the same timeavoid any chemical reactions."

The X-ray technique is be-lieved to be superior to the op-tical technique used byGermany's Reinhard Boehler, who reported a result about1,000 degrees cooler based onthe observation of recrystal-lization which was interpretedas melting.

"These measurements con-firm geophysical models thatthe temperature difference be-tween the solid core and themantle above, must be at least1,500 degrees to explain whythe Earth has a magneticfield," the French team said ofits findings.

MADRID (AFP) - Spain's un-employment rate surged past27 percent to a new record inthe first quarter of 2013, offi-cial data showed Thursday asa deep recession ravaged theeurozone's fourth-largest econ-omy.

A record unemploymentnumber also emerged in neigh-bouring France, the eurozone'ssecond-biggest economy, asthe labour ministry said job-seekers in France surged by36,900 in March to 3.224 mil-lion, beating a record set in1997.

Spain's new figure put itsjobless rate just below that ofbailed-out Greece -- the high-est in the European Union at27.2 percent.

Hundreds of people, mostlyyouths, gathered Thursdayevening near the Spanish par-liament in Madrid in responseto a call by a hardline protestmovement for demonstratorsto "Besiege Congress" indefi-nitely to force the governmentto quit.

The protesters chanted "Weare not afraid" as they marchedfrom three different points inthe centre of Madrid beforeconverging in a square in front

of parliament which was pro-tected by police barricades.

Before the demonstrationstarted police arrested fourmembers of anarchist groupssuspected of plotting to set fireto a bank and 11 people whoblocked access to a university.

Some held signs that read"6.2 million reasons" in a ref-erence to the latest jobless fig-ures.

Spain's jobless rate leapt to27.16 percent from the previ-ous quarter's figure of 26.02percent, and reached a huge57.2 percent among thoseunder 25 years old, the Na-tional Statistics Institute said.

The number of unemployedclimbed by 237,400 people to6.2 million, it said in the latestgauge of damage wrought bythe collapse of Spain's prop-erty bubble in 2008.

Spain, once the motor of jobcreation in the 17-nation singlecurrency area, is now strug-gling through a double dip re-cession brought on by thecollapse of the boom.

Its economy contracted by1.37 percent last year, the sec-ond worst yearly slump since1970, and the governmentforecasts it will shrink againby between 1.0 percent and 1.5percent this year.

In France March was the23rd consecutive month of ris-ing unemployment, as Social-ist President FrancoisHollande struggles to revive astagnant economy that isthreatened with recession.

The French labour ministrydid not provide a current un-employment rate, but said itwas at 10.2 percent at the endof 2012 and remained belowthe 10.8 percent record set in1997.

BASEL (AFP) - David Luizscored with the very last kick ofthe game to earn Chelsea a dra-matic 2-1 win at FC Basel inthe first leg of their EuropaLeague semi-final on Thursday.

Basel, who were appearingin their first European semi-final, looked set to earn a drawafter a contentious 87th-minutepenalty from Fabian Schar can-celled out Victor Moses' earlyopener.

However, deep into injurytime, Luiz drove a 25-yardfree-kick beneath the Baselwall and into the bottom-rightcorner to put Rafael Benitez'sside in control ahead of nextweek's return leg at StamfordBridge.

In the end, the only sour notefor the visitors was a yellowcard for Ashley Cole that rules

him out of the second leg, al-though Basel will also be with-out centre-back AleksandarDragovic for the same reason.

Chelsea had welcomed Coleback after a three-week ab-sence due to a hamstring in-jury, but their wariness wasdemonstrated by interim coachBenitez's decision to deploycentre-back Luiz in a midfieldholding role.
