Welcome to the Young Norfolk Arts Festival 2014! Now in its second year, the 2014 festival is a celebration of creativity and performance, by and for young people in Norfolk.

We believe it’s important to provide an opportunity for young people in our county to share their artistic talents, express their creativity and of course, provide us with a feast of entertainment right on our doorstep!

Young people are involved in organising, performing and watching this year’s exciting programme of artistic events. From dance, drama and music to art, moving image, design and creative writing, we’re confident that this year’s line-up will provide something for everyone!

A very special concert featuring a world première of a joint orchestral composition commissioned for the Sandringham Festival and performed by the Martineau Children’s Orchestra. The ’Oss & The Ox is a contemporary outdoor performance event that brings the excitement and immediacy of ancient ritual into new, urban contexts. Directed by choreographer Kate Flatt and music director Adriano Adewale, The ’Oss & The Ox is a lively, processional street performance project bringing together the Ox (the Bumba meu Boi) from Brazil and the ’Oss (the Hobby Horse) from England.

Head to Norwich Puppet Theatre to see Norwich School’s production of The Real Inspector Hound. Performed by pupils from Year 9 and 10, the play follows two theatre critics, Moon and Birdboot, who are watching a ludicrous set-up of a country house murder mystery in the style of a whodunnit. By chance, they become involved in the action, causing a series of events that parallels the play they are watching.

The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts has been working with pupils from The Hewett School, Sewell Park College, Open Academy and Norwich School on the theme of ‘monument’. Pupils from each school visited the Sainsbury Centre, exploring the current exhibition, Monument: Aftermath of War and Conflict, as a starting point to stimulate ideas before working with an artist to develop their own responses to the theme. Set in the Cathedral Cloisters, the Shakespeare drama workshops explore the stories, language and characters of Shakespeare’s plays. Following the successes of the past two years, this year’s Young Norfolk Arts Festival sees the launch of the third Norfolk Children’s Book Festival in the grounds of Norwich Lower School.

The festival aims to promote literacy and a love of books by encouraging the reading of good literature by young people across the county. Children will hear authors talk about what inspires their writing, and about sharing their stories with readers.
