AMETSA, BEÑAT ACHIARY/ERWAN KERAVEC RELEASE: "Urban Pipes“ | Buda Musique | 2011 “The meeting of Breton bagpipe and Basque song, in virtuoso improvisations void of any regionalist connotation and carried by the breath of an inventive master piper who cultivates the sound strangeness of his instrument to turn tradition into avant-garde, and a charismatic word juggler.” Télérama “SOUNDS NEVER HEARD BEFORE” The Breton Erwan Keravec and the Basque Beñat Achiary explore new territories and their music goes beyond the boundaries of genres and styles. Their vocal and bagpipe improvisations are forging sounds that have never been heard before, sounds that create a contemporary tradition bordering on the universal.” Théâtre de la Ville (Paris, 2012)

BOJAN Z | Universal Music France | Born in former Yugoslavia, BOJAN Z grew up in an environment where music was a widespread, daily activity. As well as being a sideman of outstanding names like Henry Texier, Michel Portal and Julien Lourau, he also has made eight albums under his own name. His latest one, named Soul Shelter, has received all the praises expected and even more. On this album he plays both his beloved Fazioli piano and the customized fuzzy Fender Rhodes that became one of his trademarks. Named artist of the year at the Victoire du Jazz 2012, BOJAN Z is the artist to keep a close eye on.

CHOLET/KÄNZIG/PAPAUX TRIO RELEASE: “Connex“| Cristal Records | 2011 Created in 2002, the birth of the Cholet/Känzig/Papaux Trio allowed the three musicians to gather around the pianist's music and then to evolve naturally towards a common reflection. Jean-Christophe Cholet is an extraordinary, unclassifiable pianist and composer, who combines listening, harmonic sophistication, marked sense of melody and the art of nuance and richness of timbres. Heiri Känzig and Marcel Papaux create some of the best rhythms in Europe.

DAS KAFF RELEASE: Poträt eines Anachronisten | Petit Label 030 | 2011 Formed in 2006, the French/German/Canadian trio Das Kaff, has since been driven by impetuous rhythms in modern yet melodic music. Leaping from one rhythmic style to another and radically changing harmonic structure are just some of the characteristics which define the group. Of course the cohesion between the three members and consequently the energy which pulsates throughout each piece certainly adds to the description.

EMILE PARISIEN QUARTET | Laborie Jazz/ EDEL |

Emile Parisien has been awarded « Best Jazz Musician of the Year 2012 in France » "This music is markedly accessible; it has a captivating charm all of its own, without being in any way ingratiating". – Stefan Michalzik, Frankfurter Rundschau The now customary influences of pop, hip-hop and electro are hard to find in the music of the Emile Parisien Quartet. Far from it – here, free jazz and new classical, forms of expression seemingly out of favour in recent years, are components of a light-footed play with sound and tone. Fuelled with wit, humour and immaculate ensemble playing, the quartet evokes emotional responses from its audiences up to and including euphoria. "A spark flew a message was recieved and understood, a nerve was hit. The music got through to its audience, its aesthetic charge generating immediate enthusiasm [...]" – U. Bernays, NZZ online "Emile Parisien deserves a bigger stage". – The Guardian "This music is markedly accessible, it has a captivating charm all of its own, without being in any way ingratiating". – Stefan Michalzik, Frankfurter Rundschau

GILAD HEKSELMAN RELEASE: Hearts Wide Open| Le Chant du Monde / Harmonia Mundi |2011 New album coming up in April 2013

A beautiful album from Gilad Hekselman, one of the best guitarists of a new generation of talented musicians. JAZZMAG (France) “Gilad is a great guitarist with a new voice in the world of jazz music, not just jazz guitar. He has fluidity, intensity, and a lyrical quality as an improviser and composer. He plays from the heart, and that is so important.” LIONEL LOUEKE Mr. Hekselman has set himself roughly up in the line of Pat Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel, with a warm and clean guitar tone, clear articulation, crazily extended improvisational ideas, speed when he needs it, an advanced understanding of harmony, and the flexibility to go wherever his bands want...” Ben Ratliff- NEW YORK TIMES

GUILHEM ANDRÉ | Aurasky Music / IODA| Guilhem André is a professional musician with an impressive pedigree. He is an inspired artist, constantly seeking out new musical connections that have come a long way since he first fell in love with blues, rock, and funk at the tender age of thirteen. When he was not studying, he spent his free time on courses and in master classes with such stars of the jazz world as Sylvain Beuf, André Villeger, Stéphane Kochoyan, Mike Stern, David Liebman, and Bill Evans, constantly on the lookout for like-minded souls to share in endless jam sessions and help him develop his own innovative musical projects. Guilhem André has now chosen to share his talent with a new generation: he has been teaching saxophone at Les Lilas conservatoire near Paris since 2005. At the same time, he has been developing his own career as a performer – he still leads his own quintet – and composer, inspired by innovative harmonies this is the very essence of his new album, Rêveries, scheduled for release in February 2012.

HYMNE À LA NUIT | Harmonia mundi | This unclassifiable show invites the fans of jazz and literature, those who have a passion for improvisation and those who go crazy for vocal art ... to cross, to meet, to be… curious! The touch of madness of Jean-Christophe Cholet was without any doubt needed to embark in such an adventure. This work was constructed from extracts of « Poèmes à la Nuit » by Rainer Maria Rilke and of «Hymnes à la Nuit», major text of the German Romanticism and ultimate masterpiece by Novalis. This musical show contains, around the poetic singing represented by the masterly singer and actress Elise Caron, cultural and musical worlds as distant as those of a modern jazz trio and of a classical vocal ensemble of high flight. A unique and rich experience for the musicians and singers who approached this new repertoire with great enthusiasm.

IBRAHIM MAALOUF WIND RELEASE: Mi´ster Productions/ Harmona Mundi | 2010 In 2010, The French Cinematheque asked Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf to compose the score of a movie by René Clair, which was about to be reissued. Since he discovered jazz with the famous “Ascenseur pour l’échafaud” (Miles Davis), he imagined a music in the same mood, adding his Arabic influences. The aim was not to imitate what is not imitable, but rather creating a kind of “Arabic Ascenseur pour l’échafaud”.

JASTER | Aurasky Music / DJP & IODA | At first Jaster might seem like a funny name but make no mistake, Jaster is no jester! This quartet, obviously built on friendship, puts interplay at the heart of its music, with each one of its talented musician taking turns improvising as well as composing and arranging, thus becoming an equal part of the whole. Numerous and eclectic influences are weaved together to create the richness and scope of a music that defies classification; Jazz (Weather Report, Eric Dolphy…), Pop/Rock (Pink Floyd, King Krimson…), World Music (Javanese Gamelan, Taraf…), but also painting, theater, travels or even comic books.

    VIDEO LINK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rOTVdIl79s

DIFFERENT FORMATIONS - Vincent Limouzin: Vibraphone, Electronics Since graduating with honors from Paris' CNSM (……), Vincent Limouzin has been navigating between contemporary music (Ensemble Inter-contemporain, Ensemble 2E2M…), crossover music (Javanese Gamelan, Narazia, Mexican Marimba…) and improvised music ( Fred Galliano's electronic sextet, Collectif à Plusieurs, the "National Jazz Orchestra" (ONJ) under the tutellage of Claude Barthélemy and more recently that of Frank Tortiller). He must have good vibes. - David Pouradier Duteil : drums, percussions A complex name for a complex player. Insatiable for new artistic meetings, David Pouradier Duteil has been ubiquitous on the french music scene for over 20 years (Frank Tortiller's ONJ, Okay Temiz, Michel Legrand, Juan-Jose Mosalini, Mike Mainieri, Jessey Norman…). Still, it seems, he is the only musician ever heard saying:" play what you live and live what you play ". Apparently, according to the other band menbers, he is also the only one who seems to understand what it means. - François Creamer: bass clarinet, Bb contrabass clarinet As well as Playing on everything from world jazz to contemporary music (Luc Ferrari…), from Tango (Tomàs Gubitsch…) to eastern music (Empreintes…), François Creamer has made a career as a composer (theater, TV) and as a teacher. From amassing several diplomas to founding GIMIC (Groupe d' Interaction Musicale Improvisation Composition), he seems to have done it all. With such a bio, one could say François Creamer does not waste time on inner conflicts of the "Creamer vs Creamer" type. - Christian Duperray : electric bass Christian Duperray has always been involved in various musical experiences; blues (Peter Nathanson…), Pop/Rock (Procédé Guimard Delaunay, Brice Kapel…), Fusion (Papa, Wootoo Quartet…) or world Jazz (Viviane Ginape…). Judging by his versatility, it appears he doesn't just play the electric bass, he plays the eclectic bass as well.

Manu Katché’s unique drumming sets the scene and direction, with compositions and arrangements radiating outward from its rhythm-patterns. His strongly propulsive yet relaxed groove is unlike any other drummer’s, and it lifts up the soloists. British keyboardist Jim Watson makes a strong showing with minimalistically-insistent as well as lyrical piano and thick, swirling organ, while Luca Aquino & Tore Brunborg play most attractively together.

Both musicians listen to each other leaving a lot of space with harmonic subtleness, euphony and melody. They released one album in 1998 and are planning to make another one next year. NGUYEN LE SAIYUKI TRIO RELEASE: Sayuki | Act Music | 2009 The most daring and rewarding fusion at Globalfest was Nguyên Lê’s Saiyuki, the trio of a Vietnamese-rooted French jazz guitarist (Mr. Lê), the Japanese koto player Mieko Miyazaki and the Indian tabla player Prabhu Edouard. Reaching for what Mr. Lê called “an Asia without borders,” Saiyuki used crisp, pointillistic motifs — virtuosic ones, in odd meters — to frame and spur spellbinding improvisations: billowing koto tremolos, fully melodic drumming, sitarlike guitar runs and hovering jazz chords, in a genuinely international music. NGUYEN LE "SONGS OF FREEDOM" QUINTET RELEASE: "Songs of Freedom“| Label: ACT music| 2011 Nguyên Lê is a masterful, inventive player who has cultivated a wholly unique voice on the instrument. He has developed a distinctive sound that draws upon rock, funk and jazz as well as traditional Algerian, Indian and Vietnamese styles. His music acts like a powerful detonator which everytime creates new & unheard soundscapes. There’s something marvelously ethereal in Nguyên Lê’s music. A wonderful magician of sounds and colors. After the great "celebrating Jimi Hendrix", his new project "Songs of Freedom" is about music of the 70's.

NIOU BARDOPHONES RELEASE: " Champ d'Ânes " | Buda Musique | 2008 "Sages comme des fous" | Buda Musique | Available on May 2013 The Niou Bardophones juxtapose American jazz and Armorican (a region of Brittany) beat, with fiery bagpipes, thundering baritone sax and frenzied bombard. There is an unexpected kinship between a mystic tempo and Breton round-dance beats. It sounds Breton but it is not, in that the gavotte does not have the right number of beats, it sounds like jazz but miles away from known jazz streams, it sounds like music to dance to but it is just as pleasurable to listen to. The baritone sax squeals with laughter, the bagpipe poetizes and the bombard takes on feminine accents while the drums change freely change hands.

Pick Up gathers a work of writing that Cholet has been working on for about 10 years around European Folk Musics (1997 Suite Alpestre, 2000 English Sounds & Irish Suite, 2003 Slavonic Tone and 2006 French Touch). This interactive concert is original in making the audience and the band play together. Variations, arrangements, different modes of playing will present the piece in a style never heard before. All musicians have been chosen among the most famous French solists.

RAY LEMA SOLO PIANO RELEASE: Mizila | One Drop | 2013 “There are some musicians we should never lose sight. At almost 60 years, the Zairean musician Ray Lema, has just released a new album, “Mizila”, full of grace and subtlety, which both mixes jazz, classical and african sensibilities, focusing on the exclusive use of the piano. Searching now for twenty years new musical horizons, Ray Lema plays with sobriety, away from the reggae-funk-rock of the begining of his career. Here the music takes off there the notes of the piano transport you between the universe of the dreams and the unconscious. Introspective, rich and warm, Ray Lema has signed one of his most inspired records.”

RAY LEMA VSNP QUINTET RELEASE: VSNP | One Drop | 2013 "VSNP – Very Special New Production “ is the title of the new album of Ray LEMA Quintet. 9 new titles for this great quintet composed of excellent musicians, travelling companions of Ray Lema for many years. Etienne Mbappe on bass plays the role of the Master drum in the musical tradition from Central Africa, he shares the Verb with Ray Lema whose melodic and controlled piano playing calms down (or stirs) the passion and power of the young Nicolas Viccaro on drums who accompanies and highlights the edges of the two horns, Irving Acao on tenor sax and the trumpet of Sylvain Gontard. Early October 2012, the five musicians find themselves in studio to record the new compositions of Ray Lema. The magic was there and the album was recorded live conditions with good humor and the joy of playing together that we can feel throughout the album. While using the jazz idiom that gives this wonderful freedom of expression to the musicians, Ray Lema-VSNP Quintet is a band of a new genre, mixing the harmonic subtleties of western music to the heavily spiced flavors of Africa. SUSANNE ABBUEHL RELEASE: "Compass" | ECM Records | 2006 New album "The Gift" out May 2013 | ECM Records Susanne Abbuehl released a long-awaited new album, coming after the success of April (2001) & Compass (2006) on ECM Records. “A completely original, strangely infatuating music. Abbuehl’s fragile, incredibly supple, warm alto voice: maidenly and mature at once. A soft, most intimate, ethereal music that is influenced by jazz just as by art song and folk, without itself being one or the other.” Christian Rentsch, Tages-Anzeiger
