The city of Kuala Lumpur wasestablished in the late 1850s after rich

tin mines were founded nearby. Kuala

Lumpur is located in the southern part

of Malay Peninsula. It grew quickly as a

    mining settlement and trading post.In

the past, people came to Kuala Lumpur

because the city had offered lots of jobs

like a witch offering children some

candies. This would be the choice of the

    government to prevent poverty; the

    national government employs many of

the citys people. It was a stupendous

way to not let people suffer because they

dont have money to live. Since there are

lots of jobs at the city, many people from

    another fabulous country, mostly Asia,

came to Kuala Lumpur to nd jobs there.

Later, many of the Chinese established

business and gained a superb wealth. In

    the healthy modern times, Kuala

Lumpurs population grew rapidly like ahare running for a race. The amount of

    population now is 1,262,616 million

people living their life in Kuala Lumpur.

These are the major nationalities in

    Kuala Lumpur; Malaysian, Chinese and

    India, Bumiputra, European. There are

    several major industries which are

processing of food, rubber, tin, electronic

products and textiles. People chose to

live in the city because its center place

for trading, banking, tourism and other

    commercial activities like tiny ants

looking for something sweet to eat. The

most important thing I learned about

Kuala Lumpur is that has a lot of

    phenomenal jobs because the

    government doesnt want horrible and

miserable poverty to occur. The city is a

real great place for tourists to come and

visit the history of Kuala Lumpur or the

mother nature of the forest of the city

or anyplace you go. The city has many

resources for people to choose like

    extraordinary entertainment, education,

multi cultural, and many more. The best

part of the city is that we have three

    nationalities living united in Kuala

Lumpur so we could learn about other

    nationalities. Before the Chinese people

came to look for jobs, we only had one

    nationality in one country.

Kuala Lumpur would be the best

place to come because even when you

step a foot on the land of our city, you

would love it and theres more fun and

wonderful activity for your friends and

    family.

    OTHER PEOPLES OPINIONABOUT KL

When I was living at Kuala Lumpur and I was 8 years old, all Isaw was big buildings like a lost tiger in a city. They have smallmarkets but sells lots of valuable materials for tourists or peoplewho need them. Not only they sell modern stuff, but they also sellstuff from the past . If youre ever lost around the big city of light, you can ask people around you or the traffic police because they arereally helpful but only some of them can speak English as well as abeaver chopping down a tree. In Kuala Lumpur, all the foods are sodelicious and tasty because they are well made. I really liked thehotel because they were as pretty as a butterfly. I also think thatthe KL tower or in malay Menara KL is neat and fun. Did you knowthat Kuala Lumpur Tower is the 5 th largest skyscraper in the world?

In second century A.D., many merchants from many countries

but mostly merchants fromIndia developed trading centersalong the western coast of the

peninsula. Malaysia before haddifferent parts of Malay

    Peninsula were controlled by

various southeastern Asiankingdom. I would now want talk

about the past and the future. Itis about a cave during the

    British ruled the city.

    This is what happened before

    the cave was (context), near

    Kuala Lumpur. There were some

    Orang Asli people (meaning the

    origin people of Malaysia) lived

in the cave for survival until it

was discovers at 1878. The cause

about this story is that after the

1878, the cave was found by a

naturalist named WilliamHornady. At that time, the

British still reign the city. The

cave was so big with lots of space

like a box full of empty space.

After a while, the cave became a

    picnic spot for the British

colonials and their wives becausethe cave has a really big space.

Lots of colonials came to have a

    break at the cave.

The effect about the cave is

that the gossip of cave was

    spread to the Hindu population

that the it was a holy site. Batu

Caves was moved up as a place of

    worship and praying by K.

    Thamboosamy Pillai, an Indian

trader. He was inspired by the

    'vel'-shaped entrance of the cave

like a big fat V word but upside

    down. He was motivated to

    dedicate a temple to Lord

Muruga within the caves. As the

leaf of a tree turns brown and

falls on the ground, the placedidnt became just a holy site but

    a tourist site too.

As the results on a news, the

cave is pretty famous and lots of

people came to see the beautiful

cave. It is a great and focal point

    for celebration of Thaipusam in

    Kuala Lumpur.

    From past onwards to the

    Changes from human beings

LANDSCAPE CHANGE OF JALAN BUKIT BINTANGLong ago , during the 1950 s , Jalan Bukit Bintang , Kuala Lumpur was an

old village . There was no tra f c because there weren t many cars and also

the road is really peaceful . There were lots of building houses that looked like in countryside instead of the city . In the picture , there are also lots of

trees and bushes so it was environmental . You could also see that s there s not a lot of people on the roads because maybe not a lot of people likes

the place because there s not much to do there . There s no entertainment

and restaurant for the people who lives there .

Now : After several years later , humans changed the landscape by

putting roads , transportations and malls . The town is now busier then

ever . The town is a landmark of shopping centers , cafes , club malls ,

and other shops for people living the that town . I think the reason they changed the landscape is because in Kuala Lumpur , there is lot of

population in the town so they need roads and transport for people to go

to work . They want to modernize the new world we live in now . The road

is now much wider and therefore there would be lots of car . The road was

really wide like a swimming pool . Not lot of people ride car so they would

walk and in the picture there are many people walking so what Im

thinking is that the mall is near houses and buildings . The mall was made for tourists to come and for people to buy materials that they want and

need . It was called Star Hill. It was big as the Museum in Paris . Today ,

because of this change , the town of Kuala Lumpur is now a tourists

    attraction , having leisure time and jobs .N o w : A f t e r p e o p l e c h a n g e t h e

When you arrive at KualaLumpur, you will befascinated by the aroma of

our national food like thecrispy but smooth Roti Canaiwith different spicy, deliciousspices and the hot, warm,fully- loaded chicken rice withcrunchy baked sardines andsmall nuts. You would want toadd more and more becausethe taste and avor ows asyou chew slowly to taste the

greatness of it. I would nowwant to tell to the people ofbusiness about Kuala Lumpur.

In the past, people came toKuala Lumpur because the cityhad offered lots of splendidjobs like a witch offeringchildren different kind ofcandies. This would be thechoice of the government to

prevent poverty; the nationalgovernmentemploys many ofthe citys people.Long ago, during the1950s, Jalan BukitBintang, KualaLumpur was an old village. There was no trafc because

there werent many cars andalso the road is really aspeaceful as sleeping. As theyear passed, and lots ofpeople come and live, thevillage has turn to a big, green, shopping mall calledStar Hills. Theres loads ofmaterial you can buy therelike a stadium of foot ballelds and the roads... oh theroads are much busier thanever! Everyday its as busy asa beaver chopping downtrees.

One of the things not tomiss in Kuala Lumpur are is abig, dark cave nearby KualaLumpur and it is a main place

I hope thatyou will come to our city tomake it the colours of nationsfrom all over the world andthe city of Kuala Lumpur willbe the best place to getadventures wherever you go..

    IMPACT OF

    TH E

    PAST

    ON

    THE

    PRESENT

    ,AND

    THEN

    ,AND

    NOW

The Impact of the Past on thePresent.

Honolulu was a smallPolynesian village when anEnglish seaman, Captain WilliamBrown, sailed into its harbor in1794. Other ships started to usethe harbor, and Honolulu becamean important port. In 1820,protestant missionaries from New

England came to Honolulu. They built schools and churches, andconverted many Hawaiians toChristians.

During the late 1940s and1950s brought important socialand economic changes toHonolulu. People from china,

Japan and other Asian countrieshad been kept out of politics andbig businesses in the city, I infer they were kept out of politics andbusinesses because of the war that the United States had with theJapan in World War II. After World War II ended in 1945, many Americans of Asian decent became leaders in Honolulusgovernment and industry.

During the 1960's, the tourismindustry boomed in Honolulu andhigh-rise apartment buildings andhotels went up in the city's main

urban area. The start of jet air travel reduced the ying timebetween cities on the mainland of

the United States and Honolulu.Airlines lowered their fares andscheduled more and more ightsbetween many cities andHonolulu.

The 1970s and 1980s, Honolulucontinued to be a popular place for tourists, and Honolulus economy grew rapidly. The e ! ect of the rapidgrowth created several problems ex:it caused a housing shortage, accompanied by high building costsand limited space.

To help ease the shortage, thegovernment gave nancial aid tomany home builders. Many residentsfeared that the hotel constructionboom threatens Honolulu's scenic beauty. To help solve this problem,Honolulu's government has limitedhotel construction in certain areas.

This picture was taken 44years apart, 1955 and the21 st century. In thesepictures you can really seethe difference in Honolulu, how the people changedthe landscape. Today there

are so many high-risebuildings, and before therewerent any high-rise

buildings at all. Peoplechanged the landscape inHonolulu because their population grew rapidly, and Honolulu became oneof the biggest touristattractions. They had tomake more buildings, andmany more hotels to

accommodate all thepeople that came to visit.Even today Honolulu is abig tourist attraction.Longtime residents missthe low-rise skyline butenjoy today'sconveniences.

Over the Cape Mountains, at thesouthern coastal tip of South Af-rica lies the astounding city of Cape Town. Cape Town, SouthAfrica used to be a city with seg-regation and racism. All of the

black Africans were imprisoned,so that they could not have anycontact with a white person. Butthen the blacks fought back. Now,the city of Cape Town and all of South Africa is as integrated as acheckerboard. Cape Town has thepopulation of 2,723,760 people,1,869,144 people in the metropoli-tan area, and the rest in the otherareas. Cape Town is home to thisamount of people because differentpeople wanted to come to CapeTown and starta new andbetter life.Around thelate 1900sto 2001, hu-mans changed thelandscape of CapeTown by addingroads, buildings, sports

arenas, and more! And at night, when the lights are on, it is asstunning as a Christmas tree! Peo-ple should move to Cape Town fortheir natural beauty, job opportuni-ties, and the different, pleasurable, things to do.

At the southwest coast of Africa, over theCape Mountains, lies Cape Town. CapeTown has the population of 2,723,760 peo-ple, 1,869,144 people in the metropolitanarea, and the rest in the other areas. CapeTown is very mountainous. Cape Townsgeneral climate is sunny, which is goodbecause Cape Town has some really nicebeaches! In the summer, Cape Town is hot,and night is cold. The deserts in CapeTown are hot and dry. The Cape Mountainsregion has warm and dry summers, and iscool and wet in the winter. South Africans

speak 11 different languages; Zulu, Xhosa,Afrikaans, Pedi, English, Tswana, Sotho,Tsonga, Swazi, Vendi and Ndeble. CapeTown also has many different religiousbeliefs, although they do not have a na-tional church, the majority of the people of Cape Town are Christian.

The traditions and holidays in Cape Townare celebrated every year, and looked for-ward to. One tradition is the Dragon BoatsFestival. Every year, a festival is organizedwhere 18 athletes row a dragon boat andcompete against other teams (they race eachother). The boats are rowed to the rhythmicthump of a drummer on each boat. Each

team strives to win. Cape Town also hastraditional things like the Roundel house. The Roundel house is a nifty house for thepoor with roofs made of straw and bodiesmade of what looks like plaster. The holi-days in Cape Town are simple, they cele-brate Christmas and New Years, and someother holiday such as the day after Christ-mas which is called Goodwill day, FamilyDay is in April, May 1 st is Workers Day,and Human rights day is in mid March.

South Africa also has many landforms and/

or landmarks like the Cape Mountains,Kalahari Desert, The Plateau, Namib De-sert, and the Orange River, which is thelongest river in South Africa. Most of SouthAfrica sits on a plateau; a plateau is anelevated piece of land. It looks like a moun-tain, but its at, it kind of looks like the Pisign.

Cape Town used to be a city with allblack Africans, and then the white peo-ple from European countries came toSouth Africa and gained power over thecountry, although the black Africanstowered over the white peoplepopulation-wise, they were still not asprivileged as white people. The blackswere not allowed to vote for theirpresident, and did you know that it wasillegal for the two races to marry? Theneverything changed when the whitesmade a series of laws, laws that re-stricted all freedom for black Africansbecause the white people felt that they

could easily be threatened by blackAfricans. The blacks and whites wereto be segregated. This resulted in theApartheid era of South Africa.

    !Cape Town, South Africa was

a city with segregation and racism. Allof the black Africans were imprisoned,so that they could not have any contactwith a white person. But one man hadenough of those laws, and that theyrestricted all freedom for black Afri-cans, his name was Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela was imprisoned aswell as the other black Africans, so hestepped up and fought, with his words, his heart, and the help of his fellowimprisoned black Africans, but unfor-tunately, this just got him even moretime in prison. But he didnt stop, hedidnt back down to the white people, they were on his land. So he fought, and fought and fought, and as a resultof this, he was elected the rst blackpresident South Africa has ever had, atruly remarkable man.

!As a result, the city of Cape

Town is a city with beautiful landmarksand an interracial government. CapeTown may have some poverty, but it isas integrated as a checkerboard. All of this thanks to Nelson Mandela, hisheart, and his people. This is why hewas elected president, now, the city of Cape Town and all of South Africa willhopefully never have to encounter an-other Apartheid era forever and ever.

These pictures show how people have changed thelandscape of Cape Town. Before, in the 1960s, CapeTown was a city with small houses, and beautiful na-ture. Cape Town used to be controlled by the whitepeople who are not from South Africa and invadedCape Town in the early 1900s. The white people tookcontrol of the government, and they owned a lot of

land. But when South Africa fought back, they gottheir land back and their government. They becamean independent country in 1931.Then, around the year 2001, humans changed thelandscape by adding roads, buildings, lights, sportsarenas, and more! But if you look at both pictures, itseems that they removed some land. They did thesethings to Cape Town because they wanted it to lookmore attractive, they wanted to attract tourists, andsome land got removed probably because of environ-mental reasons. Today, because of this change, the cityof Cape Town is now more 2011, it looks more at-tractive, and I know it attracts tourists because I wouldlike to visit Cape Town right now!

    CAPE TOWNS POPULATION AND RESOURCES

    FROM A CAPE TOWNER HIMSELF...

!I have lived in Cape Town for 4 years, and I loved it there! I love how safe Cape Town is. The police are ex-

tremely concerned about your safety. Cape Town has a good education and good teachers. I went to the Crawford Pre-School. With Cape Towns education, I was a little Einstein! Cape Town has really delicious food and drinks. I love Yo-

giSip. It is yoghurt in a bottle! My favorite avor is vanilla. All you had to do was open the bottle, and take in the avors! It is known as a South African Dream. If you taste it, youll see why! Cape Towns citizens are extremely in touch withtheir roots, so some street vendors sell traditional things, like spoons, knives, and furniture (e.g stools). Cape Town is

known for its natural beauty and sunny climate. In the summer, Cape Town was as hot as a frying pan! - Raj

The city of Cape Town was rstfound in 117,000 BC when the rst Homosapiens set foot on the Langebaan Lagoon.Cape Town lies on the southwest coastal

tip of South Africa. Its location isimportant because it became a touristattraction because of their sunny climate, and its beaches, one of the majorlandmarks is the Orange River, which isthe largest river in Africa. Cape Towns

biggest resource is probably water. CapeTown has as much water to ll up Russia.

The religions in Cape Town are Muslim,Hindi, Catholic, and the majority beingChristian. People came to Cape Town inthe past for the resources, but others justwanted to take over the land. But today, people come to Cape Town for its naturalbeauty, landmarks, and its sunny beaches,so it is quite the tourist attraction. CapeTown has the population of 2,723,760people, 1,869,144 people in the metropoli-tan area, and the rest in the other areas. The major nationalities represented inCape Town are African, Asian, European,Xhosa, Indian, and British. The major industries are the industry sec-tor and the service sector. The industrysector includes jobs that are quite danger-ous like mining, manufacturing, construc-tion, and Power Production, which takes

place in the nuclear power plant. The serv-ice sector includes jobs that are much morephysically safe like working at governmentofces, schools, hotels, stores, and restau-rants. Cape Towns industries are as busyas bees in a bee hive! Today, peoplechoose to live in Cape Town for again, itsnatural beauty and the job opportunities.Cape Town would be a good place to relo-cate to because there would be many goodemployees from the service sector to workthere. Plus, the companies would certainlydo good here because Cape Town does noteven have these famous companies to shopfrom or work in. Therefore, the city of

Cape Town is a city with good job oppor-tunities, a beautiful climate, nice land-marks, and is a tourist attraction.

    FROM THE PAST

This is a photo of The New Gallery Cinema in 1929,in London. This cinema used to be one of themost popular cinemas inLondon. The New Gallery Cinema wasclosed in September 13th1953. After being closedit was turned into a church that showed

religious lms. Thechurch moved out, andthe building stood empty for ten years.

In 2006, the building waschanged into a habitat furnishing store. I think they changed the landscapeof this building to makeit more appealing to

people so they couldearn more money. I alsothink they changed thelandscape of the building to modernize thebuilding. They modernized the building so it could t in with themodern landscape. I think thispicture is a good example of how London has changed its landscape.

It wasonce one of the biggest trading routes of the entire world. It was south of Malaysia, between the South China Seaand the Indian Ocean. A lot of Malaysian, Indian andChinese traders came to Temasek to trade their goods. Here is the context, cause and effect of my city.

The majority of the Chinese, Malaysian and Indiantraders wanted more goods than they got, so they thoughtof a plan to get more goods, they moved to the island This was the context. The Indians, Malaysians and theChinese settled in Temasek and called it Singapore and from a trading country to a pleasurable place to eat, learn and relax This is the cause. Singapore became a multi racial country with three races and a big resort inone small country/city this is the effect.

The state of Virginia used to beinhabited by the powerful Native Americantribe, the Powhatans, who were part of theAlgonquian language group. These peoplelived very primitively - by Englishstandards, but I would say they were simplepeople. They lived in longhouses whichwere fashioned out of straw and sticks. Thehides of the deer they hunted were used fortheir clothes, the meat for their food, andthe bones for their tools. There was peaceand wildlife in Virginia before the Englisharrived.

    "Then everything changed

signicantly in the May of 1607 when theVirginia Company of London sentEnglishmen over the big pond to the NewWorld in order to nd gold, land, and

natural resources that could be sold forwealth and manufactured into goods thatcould be sold back in England. The settlerschose to go on this dangerous journey to getaway from the Church of England in searchof their own religious rights. They didntknow that the journey they were starting was for a lot more than what they thought.

The settlers created the JamestownSettlement in Virginia (Named after theirKing, King James I) next to the James River

(also named after King James). Because of that, the Native Americans were driven out, terrorized, and killed on their own land. The English settlers brought diseases suchas the black plague, which killed boththemselves and the Natives. Other ies inthe ointment were the brackish (salt water/fresh water) that the settlers drunk thatkilled them, and their poor hunting techniques affected their ability to get food,so they were forced to eat the rats that cameon the boat with them ( thats how they all

got the Black Plague). During their rstwinter, their food source was scarce(and they were awful at hunting anyway) they lost a lot of settlers, andthat period in history was called TheStarving Time. It was a very challenging time for the English.

!The result was that the United States aswe know it was created by more successfulcolonies were formed. Full NativeAmericans are very tricky to nd nowbecause they had to marry English in ordernot to die out. Now Virginia is a popularhistorical tourist attraction.

These picturesshow how peoplehave changed the

landscape of Williamsburg,Virginia. Before, inthe year of 1699,Williamsburg was ajust a small town. Then, around the1900s, humanschanged thelandscape by

reconstructing thishistorical site tomake it a verypopular historicalattraction. It is still avery small town, but

some changes havebeen made. ColonialWilliamsburg is a

place tourists go tolearn about thehistory of America, and to learn abouthow the settlerscoped in the NewWorld. Certainbuildings have beenreconstructed- butstrongly resemble the

buildings that werethere in the 1600s(like the church). There is also theWilliamsburg Regional Library

located on ScotlandStreet. Restaurantshave been added too.

We did this to makesure the buildings aresafe for tourists, andto make them moreurban and pleasing to look at. Today, because of thischange, the town of Williamsburg isalmost like it was in

the 1600s, but moremodernized to makeit a very signicantpart of AmericanHistory.

The boys wore them EVERYWHERE!They insisted in wearing them for the

entire week. It was like the hats were

T HE I MPACT ON THE PAST TO PRE SENT

Tokyo used to be known as Edo. Even

before it became the capital of Japan,it already was the cultural and political

center of the country. The countryscapital however was in Kyoto. Edo

grew into a huge city with a population

of over a million by the mid-eighteenthcentury.

Then everything changed because theImperial palace was located in Tokyo,

the capital was moved there during the

Meji restoration. The design of the citywas focused on the train lines and even

before the 1940s; it was one of themost populated cities in the world.

The cause was during the pacific war

that many changes happened. It washeavily devastated after the war but a

    period of restoration and growth

followed until the 1980s though Tokyo

is just on its way to progress from theeconomic crises during the 1990s.

Until now there are some effects likethe city of Tokyo is now one of the

most respected cities in the world. It

has undergone a series of ups anddowns though the people and the

government has never given up intrying to restore the city. It still is one

of the worlds most populated cities

and still continues to influences othercountries in many aspects of life.

    The History of the

MarvelousThe great city of Chicago used to be asmall town with a population of 4,000people. It was called The Place of theRailroads because they had many, many

railroads. They had 10 main railroad lineswith about 3,000 miles (4,800km) of track. How did Chicago used to be like? It used to

be kind of small. Maybe a little bitinteresting by the buildings. The buildingswere quite original back then. There were

not many people living there until they toldtheir friends who told their friends and soon. It was NOT known AT ALL. Chicagoused to be a ruin until it got discovered and

became one of the worlds most famouscities! Now, in Broadway (in N.Y.C.) theyhave a play called Chicago! !

The 1st white people came and becameallies with the American Indians. The 1st

white people to reach Chicago wereFrench-Canadian Explorer, Louis Jolliet anda French Jesuit named Jacques Marquette. They were on their way North to Canada.

French fur traders and missionaries oftenused the North way. Then the Fox Indianscame and closed the route to the portage.

Very, very little was known about Chicagofrom about 1700-1770s.

As Chicago was known again, morepeople started to scatter all over Chicago.Chicago because just slightly famous aroundthe 1780s. It was also known for the trade it

had so many people had gone there totrade. Chicago had been more and morepopulated over the years. People had been

fallen in love with Chicago because of itshistory, and its trade!

A terrible thing happened in 1871.There was a big re that covered most of Chicago on October 8th, 1871. Legend saysthat a cow on a barn owned by Mrs. Patrick

OLeary kicked over a lit lantern and wentall over the grass. The wind was strong and

blew the ames across the river and gotonto the city. If the re didnt happen, then

Chicago wouldnt be the place it is now. Thepeople of Chicago had been better thanever! Of course we do not want anything as

terrible as this to happen again, just to think about it, it makes me think how terrible it isto lose family and friends.

Afterwards, Chicago became the 3rdmost known city in the USA! A lot of foreigners started to come so Chicago has a

    IntroductionNestled between green

    forests, intertwining

mountain ranges, andBuddhist wats, lies the city of Bangkok. Bangkok usedto be a much more colorfulcity, even if you nd thathard to believe. Even so,Bangkok is still very impressive today. Cabaretshows in the red lightdistricts mixed with Sunday afternoons by the hotel poolgive the special Thai buzzthat tourists live for. Truly, a sight for sore jet -lagged eyes. The city of Bangkok is now a metropolitan beehive andis an internationalheavyweight in commerceand trade. Formerly, it wasthe Thai capital. Now, it isAsias heart and soul.

    Bangkok: Now and Then

Bangkok used to be a muchmore colorful city then it is now, even if you nd that hard to

believe. During WWII, the many cultures inundated by Bangkokwere shunned or forced out by the invading Japanese, but now they are back and as vibrant asthey were before.

The modern Bangkok is very diff erent, with a fantasticeconomy and a happy people. The tourism trade is going strong, and Bangkok is once

more a prestigious, internationally acute modern city.Bangkok appeared on the

map about 1000 years ago. TheThai peoples of ancient China migrated south into what is now Bangkok, and established a government called the Khmer( not to be confused with theKhmer Rouge of Cambodia ). TheKhmer wiped out the native Wa

peoples, and claimed theirancestral home as their own.
