ExECUTIVE SUMMARy
This report explores global relocation trends in 2013, providing a detailed overview of relocation trends for the
following sectors:
- Consumer
- Enterprise
Based on survey responses, each sector has been analysed in terms of their likelihood of relocation, and allocated
a "likelihood of relocation" score out of ten, whereby a high score indicates a higher likelihood of relocation.
Overall, the report has found that:
- 42.9% of telecoms professionals are currently working outside of their native country.
- The majority of telecoms professionals working in permanent positions (44.8%) are "likely" to relocate, and
31.0% are "actively looking to relocate".
- 47.1% of contractors are "actively looking to relocate" and 41.2% are "likely" to relocate.
- Europe is the preferred region for both permanent and contract professionals, with around half of the
permanent and contract professionals choosing Europe as their preferred region.
- With 26.9% of the vote, Germany is overall the most popular location to relocate to on a permanent
basis. The UK is the favourite location to relocate to on a contract basis (40.0%).
- Career progression is the most likely motive to relocate on a permanent basis (43.8%), followed by
work/ life balance and to experience another culture or location. In comparison, contractors would most
likely relocate to gain specific skills or experience or for work/ life balance.
- The preferred length of time to relocate for on a permanent basis is 3-5 years (43.8%), followed by "as
long as possible" (33.3%). Contractors would ideally relocate for 1-2 years (31.3%) followed by "as long
as possible" (25.0%).
- The majority of respondents within permanent roles (41.7%) would require a 11-20% salary increase in
order to relocate, closely followed by a 21%+ increase (37.5%). The majority of contractors (37.5%)
would also require a 20%+ salary increase in order to relocate, followed by a 11-20% increase (25.0%).
- The majority of permanent professionals (64.6%) would consider relocating for a contract role, and the
vast majority (87.5%) of contractors would consider relocating for a permanent role. The main
motives for permanent staff to relocate as a contractor are to get a higher rate of pay (38.7%), to gain
specific skills and experience (29.0%), or to experience another culture or location (16.1%). The key
reason that contractors would relocate for a permanent position is for career progression (35.7%).

With a relocation score of 8.0 out of 10, Consumer professionals working in permanent roles are more likely
to relocate than professionals working within the Enterprise Space. The majority (63.6%) are "likely" to relocate
and 18.2% are either "actively looking to relocate" or are "unlikely" to relocate for a permanent position. No
respondents stated that they would "never" relocate for a permanent position.
When asked about the region that they would most likely consider relocating to, the majority of respondents
answered Europe (37.5%), followed by Africa and North America around a quarter of respondents would
consider relocating anywhere.
The most popular countries to relocate to are the UK and the US.
Career progression is the most likely motive for relocation (62.5%), followed by the desire to experience another
culture or location, and salary and bonus.
In terms of the ideal period of time for relocation, 50.0% of professionals working in permanent positions within
the Consumer Sector would ideally relocate for 3-5years. 37.5% of professionals would ideally relocate for “as
long as possible” and 12.5% would ideally relocate for 6-10 years. No respondents expressed a preference in
relocating for 0-2 years.
PERMANENT PROFESSIONALS

With regards to salary change, all permanent professionals within this sector would expect or require at least an
11% salary increase in order to relocate, with 37.5% expecting a 11-20% salary increase, and 62.5% (the majority)
expecting a 20%+ salary increase to relocate for a permanent role.
At 57.1%, over half of the respondents would consider relocating on a contractual basis. The opportunity to
experience another culture or location, or to get a higher rate of pay were the two main reasons for making such
a move.
- With a relocation score of 8.67 out of 10,
contractors within Consumer are more positive
about relocation in comparison to the
Enterprise Sector.
- The most popular region for Consumer
contractors to relocate to is Europe.
- The UK and the US are the most popular
countries for contractors within the Consumer
Sector to relocate to.
- The most popular motives for relocation
are to gain specific skills and experience or to
experience another culture or location.
- When asked the ideal period of time for
relocation, the vast majority of contractors
would ideally prefer to relocate for "as long as
possible".
- The majority of contractors would
either require a 6-10% or a 11-20% rate
increase to relocate for a contract role.

Enterprise professionals working in permanent positions are less likely to relocate than professionals working
within the Consumer Sector. With a relocation score of 7.97 out of 10, the majority of permanent professionals
(44.9%) are "likely" to relocate and 27.6% are "actively looking to relocate". 24.1% of professionals are "unlikely"
to relocate and 3.4% would "never" relocate.
The most popular region for relocation is Europe, with 61.5% of the vote, followed by North America (15.4%),
Africa (11.5%), and the Middle East (3.8%). No respondents are likely to relocate specifically to Asia Pacific or
Latin America, however, 7.7% are interested in relocating anywhere.
With regards to the most popular country to relocate to, Germany received the highest number of votes
(26.9%), followed by the UK, the US and Switzerland.
With regards to expected or required salary change for relocation, the majority (46.2%) would expect a 11-20%
salary change in order to relocate. 30.8% who would expect a 21%+ salary change and 3.8% would expect a
0-10% salary increase in order to relocate. Some respondents however, would relocate without any form of
salary increase, with 11.5% willing to relocate with "no change" in their salary, and 7.7% willing to take a reduction
to relocate.
The most popular period of time to relocate for is 3-6 years (34.6%),

The majority of permanent professionals working within the Enterprise Sector chose career progression as the
most likely motive for them to relocate (38.5%), followed by work/ like balance (26.9%).
When asked whether they would consider relocating on a contractual basis, the majority of permanent
professionals within the Enterprise Sector stated that they would consider relocating for a contract role. The key
motives for considering such a move included to gain specific skills or experience (41.2%), to get a higher rate of
pay (29.4%) and work/ life balance (11.8%).
- Enterprise contractors are less likely to
relocate than Consumer contractors, with a
relocation score of 8.2 out of 10.
- 80.0% of contractors are either "actively
looking to relocate" or are "likely" to relocate.
- When asked which region they would most
likely consider relocating to on a contractual
basis, the majority of contractors chose
Europe.
- Germany is the overall most sought after
country to relocate to, with 26.9% of the vote.
- The most popular period of time to
relocate for as a contractor is 1-2 years.
