Publicly condemned racist attitudes and

cottage in St. Augustine, Fla., was

shot into.

This was the summer before I integrated

schools.

Fall 1964I was asked if I wanted to go to

the “white” school. I replied, “Yes!” without really thinking

about it.

1964 ; Mid YearOne day my daddy said, “Baby, how would you like to go to the

“white” school?”I replied, “Yes!” without really

thinking about it.

My mother was opposed because she knew that

people were being killed for participating in the Civil

Rights movement.

Advice for your enemies:

“Just look at them and smile.”

The night before…I received an

anonymous phone call froma white woman warning me

not to go to the “white”school.

The very next day…

My daddy drove me to Sanford Jr. High. I was escortedinto the building by the

Police. I told no one about the phone call.
