My Dear Friends,There really are no words that can express my gratitude and appreciation of my mother. Because of her loving personality and brilliant insight, I am the person I am today. She helped remind me that persistence, dedication and loyalty are attributes of those who aim for success. In this issue, I want you to think of that special woman who has greatly influenced your life, whether it is your mother, grandmother, aunt, or even nanny, and take a moment to thank that person and give her the credit that she so rightfully deserves. I also want to sincerely thank the community of Sanford for all of their support and positive feedback. Thank you to Seminole County, City of Sanford as well for this incredible opportunity to provide Sanford with its first bilingual magazine in town. I love Sanford and am so thankful to be a part of this community. It is such a blessing to know that My Sanford Magazine motivates others and signifies what an awesome positive community we are!

GOLDSBOROT H E R I G H T A R M o f S A N F O R D

FOUNDED IN 1891, GOLDSBORO WAS A FORMER TOWN but was annexed to Sanford as far back as 1911. Today, most Goldsborans consider themselves Sanfordites. My parents came to the Goldsboro community in Sanford in 1946, looking for work and a better place than Alabama to raise their children. Sure Jim Crow was alive and well in Sanford, but we were happy and enjoying the lakes and the St. Johns River. My dad became an enthusiastic fisherman of Lake Monroe.

Crooms Academy High School is where some of my favorite memories were born; there was always something going on at the school. Our teachers lived in the community and knew all the families—that’s not something that happens as much nowadays. Church was also on the top of my list of favorite places as a child. Friday nights was Bible study with Mother Ruby Wilson and after Bible study was a fish fry with all the ice tea and Kool-Aid you could eat and drink. I loved Sunday mornings. Most of our teachers at school were our Sunday school teachers, so we were always surrounded by people who knew us well and cared for us..

One of our legendary teachers is still with us today. Mrs. Inez Smith is her name, and she was my teacher when I was in school; she taught Physical Education at Crooms and Lakeview (now Millennium) Middle School until she retired in 1988. Mrs. Smith is now a volunteer at the Goldsboro Welcome Center and she serves there just as faithfully as when she used to teach. Mrs. Smith grew up, was educated, and worked in the Goldsboro area. She is one of the many smiling faces of Goldsboro and is my great friend. I hope you can take some time to visit our community; maybe you’ll see us around!

THE COMMERCIAL HISTORIC DISTRICT WAS LISTED ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER IN 1976 and has 26 contributing buildings, dating from 1877–1924. The Old Sanford Residential Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1989 and contains 434 buildings in a wide range of historic architectural styles including Craftsman, Prairie, Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, National, Colonial Revival, Spanish Eclectic, and Mission. There are many communities within the downtown corridor of the city of Sanford. This article will feature the residential Historic District.

The Historic District is one of the more popular and well-known communities within the city. The residential Historic District’s close proximity to the Commercial Historic District, the Lake Monroe waterfront, and the Sanford marina make it a wonderful and convenient place to live. The oak-lined, brick-paved streets are reminiscent of times past. Picket fences, front porches, and rocking chairs appear on every block.

Many residents take advantage of the Saturday morning Farmers Market in Magnolia Square—restaurants, art galleries, shops, and bars—all within a short walk, bike ride, or golf cart ride from their homes. If you’re planning to go to Orlando or the neighboring communities, the SunRail station makes these places accessible for commuting. The Orlando International Airport is 35 minutes away and the Orlando-Sanford International Airport is only 10 minutes away. Beaches and theme parks are within an hour drive. Sanford is simply one of the most conveniently situated areas in central Florida.

Maria will be hosting a free walking tour one Friday a month (fourth Friday coincides with the Welcome Center’s monthly Art Walk). The tour will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will last approximately one hour. The first tour will take place on May 22, 2015 in recognition of Historic Preservation Month! For more information or to make reservation please contact Maria S. Shreve at [email protected]. Space is limited so make your reservations today!

The residential Historic District runs primarily from the alley of Elm Avenue to the alley of Palmetto and then from 3rd Street through 13th Street. Since being declared a Historic District in 1989, the community has flourished because of many dedicated residents devoting years to the restoration of their historic homes. Homes within the district date from the late 1800s to the early 1900s and all exterior renovations are guided by the City of Sanford Historic District guidelines. Many are surprised by the affordable housing the district offers to historic home lovers, and there is a unique selection of homes in various stages of renovation. The Historic District boasts four city parks, a cultural arts center, and a history museum within its boundaries.

The community is made up of an eclectic group of folks who are passionate about their city. Residents of the Historic District have been the creators and driving force behind such local events as Alive After 5, Celery Soup, Love Your Shorts Film Festival, St. Johns River Art Festival and the Sanford Historic Trust Home Tour.

The City of Sanford has undergone major changes in the past decade. From the $2.5 million Sanford Avenue Streetscape Project to the $6.5 millionRiverWalk extension, Sanford’s transformation is profound. Millions of dollars in private investments have resulted in the rehabilitation of many late 19th and early 20th century homes.

In honor of May as National Preservation Month, the City of Sanford will recognize and honor the restoration of properties in Sanford through a series of “Then and Now” exhibits.

ANNIE IS A BEAUTIFUL, ANNIE is a beautiful, four-pound bundle of love. She is the queen of my castle. Ask my cats and they’ll agree. Annie loves her daily walks around town. Many of the servers at the local restaurants already know her well. People may not remember me, but they always remember Annie. She loves to sit and relax on swings at the RiverWalk on cool days. The only person she doesn’t like is the mailman. Poor guy. Sorry, mailman, but thank you, Sanford for loving her as much as we do.

Now that I am a mother, I take my responsibility very seriously. The more

I teach my children the better off they will be when they are out in the

world. I also want them to learn on their own, so I let them make

mistakes and struggle a little bit. They’re stronger for it.”

Sanford is the home of, what I like to call, “Beautiful Living.”Our town has wonderful restaurants, bars, and people. My goal

is to highlight this amazing talent in the culinary industryand share it with the wonderful residents in this community.

How? By bringing the talent directly into people’s homes.

We decided to bring a fantastic chef to visit the McLeod family’s residence to incorporate fine dining in their home. I envisioned a Tuscan theme—and what better way to create that atmosphere than inviting Ian Schneider, owner of Chianti’s Pizza and Pasta in Sanford? Chef Ian prepared a special meal for the McLeods and their buddies, Josh and Jennifer Dane, and Chris and Breri Sprysenski. I decorated the dining table with rustic pots and creative floral arrangements that were provided by the Sanford Flower Shop while Ian cooked diligently: preparing an Italian cuisine that left the McLeod’s absolutely speechless. The experience was gratifying for everyone involved.

This is a novel home-restaurant experience and my goal is to raise community awareness for talents local business owners possess. This initiative wouldn’t have been possible without Chianti’s Pizza and Pasta, and the help of Chef Ian Schneider.

Thank you, Chris and Erika McLeod for opening up your home to My Sanford Magazine!

Q: YOU RECENTLY OPENED WONDERMADE IN DOWNTOWN SANFORD. TELL US ABOUT THAT!

A: Wondermade moved into the heart of downtown Sanford last December and it’s been such a great experience for us. We have had the company for years and have been lucky enough to ship marshmallows all around the world. It has always been a disappointment when we had calls from customers who wanted to visit the space but we didn’t have a front of house for them; we didn’t have a place where we could toast marshmallows and connect with people in person. So when we outgrew our previous kitchen, we knew we wanted a location that would include a cafe and we found it in Sanford. It has been an amazing experience because not only have we been able to serve and connect with customers who have stopped in to visit from all over the country, but we have also met so many neighbors. We live just blocks away from the store and even though we have been in Sanford more than a decade, it is amazing how much bigger Sanford seems because of all the neighbors we have met at Wondermade.

Recently we have begun offering field trips and Wondermade workshops that allow people from the broader community to spend a little time as "official marshmallow agents.” Repeatedly, we have heard people from Orlando or Winter Park tell us that they had no idea how great Sanford was and that has been a great experience too.

Q: WHAT IS WONDERMADE FOR YOU?

A: The whole idea started for us because I wanted to give Jenn a really great Christmas present. So I wrapped up a candy thermometer and a recipe for marshmallows. Just a few months later, after cooking batch after batch, we realized we wanted to start Wondermade. Since the genesis for the company was an outpouring of my love for Jenn, we want to be sure we remain a place that serves that love in various practical ways. Of course we want to make the best marshmallows and serve the best coffee around. That also means we want to be people who see those around us as people worthy of being loved and not just as possible customers.

Q: WHAT MAKES WONDERMADE SUCCESSFUL?

A: We cannot say for sure what has made it work, but we have worked hard to make the best marshmallows around. We have tried to imbue the same love that led us to start the company in every part of the experience—from the packaging to making the marshmallows and s’mores.

Q: WONDERMADE IS SHIPPING AROUND THE WORLD. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR FUTURE BUSINESS?

A: We would love to see Wondermade continue to grow. We have stocked hundreds of stores around the world and shipped more than a million marshmallows last year. We are ready to see those numbers multiply. And we would really love to continue seeing Wondermade draw people to downtown Sanford so they can experience the best part of this city.

Q: CAN YOU SHARE SOME TIPS FOR OTHER COUPLES TRYING TO BALANCE WORK, FAMILY, AND MARRIAGE?

A: I think we have found that a healthy balance in life is a by-product of love. When we keep God, our kids, and each

other at the front of our lives, everything else seems to line up. Whenever we focus on everything else in life—whether it be work or something simpler like television—those things that hold the greatest value suffer tremendously.

Q: I SAW YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY HAVING FUN HELPING. DO YOU AND JENN WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO BE AS PASSIONATE AS YOU BOTH ARE FOR THE BUSINESS AS WELL?

A: I think we would want our children to find themselves. We want them to connect with God and be a part of a life-giving community. Right now, they love Wondermade. Of course it would be amazing for that to continue too.

Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SANFORD?

A: We loved the downtown area, the diverse population, the lake, the green space. Over the years, we have come to enjoy bike trips to the library, watching the parades downtown, and walking to see the Fourth of July fireworks. The sights, sounds, and tastes of Sanford provide such a great backdrop for our home. In fact, when we moved a couple of years ago we decided to buy a new home just three blocks away—so we have chosen Sanford as our home in more ways than one.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING AND WORKING IN SANFORD?

A: We moved to Sanford from downtown Winter Park more than a decade ago. We were attracted to the social and economic diversity, the city’s history, and its beautiful downtown district. There was a sense of “becoming” here; a feeling that this city’s future is still being written and that we could be a part of its story.

SUMMER CAMP

Summer is just around corner. With it, comes the challenge of finding

ways to keep our children engagedand learning while they enjoy their

summer vacation.

1.  THE GIFT OF GAB According to research published in the American Journal of Public Health, socializing can extend life span and delay memory problems. Children acquire important social skills by interacting with many different people and a rapid increase in multiculturalism in camps has been reflected in recent years.

2.  STRESS RELIEF Camping allows children to cope with stress and feel happier. Stress can negatively affect health in just about every way possible. Low serotonin levels, for instance, are associated with depression and anxiety. That feeling of happiness kids get when they take their first breath of air at the campground is related to higher levels of oxygen, which leads to increased levels of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter in the brain.

THERE ARE MANY SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS and several different types of camps. Some camps are operated by for-profit companies, non-profit organizations, churches, parochial schools, the YMCA, etc. These camps can specialize in anything from music and dance to sports and the outdoors. Experts agree there are many benefits summer camp offers that can positively impact a child for life. Most children enjoy being at summer camp, but keep in mind that carefully choosing a camp that fits your child’s interests and involving your child in that process is critical to ensuring the camp experience will have an encouraging life-long effect. Do this, and you’re sure to reap the benefits of a great summer and a happy child.

3.  FEEL-GOOD FITNESS Exercise is the most obvious benefit of camping: your child will be spending a lot of time performing physical activities. Fishing can help them burn more calories than they would burn sitting around at home. Biking is also a high-calorie burner and it helps keep the heart and lungs healthy.

4.  SMILES AND SUNSHINE Sunlight feels great on skin, and there is an evolutionary reason for that. When people are out in direct sunlight, the body produces and takes in increased levels of Vitamin D, which allows it to absorb important minerals like calcium and phosphorous—definitely something to smile about.

31

Page 33: My Sanford Magazine

M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | L I F E S T Y L E • 32

5.  SWEET DREAMS The physical and mental activities of the day help your child fall asleep faster. Sleep has an effect on the body’s processes and can reduce inflammation as well as improve kids’ cardiovascular system and help them stay alert. Resting the brain is important and many campers report better sleep cycles when they return from a trip.

6.  BOOSTED BRAINPOWER Camps offer a multitude of activities for children; many of those activities are new to most kids, particularly ones that are raised in cities. Studies from the University of Texas and University of Michigan show that new experiences help keep the brain healthy. New activities that are both physically and intellectually stimulating have the greatest positive effect on your children’s

brain health.

7.  POSITIVE VIBES Studies have shown that in as little as two weeks, camping helped children develop a more positive identity and sense of morale. Camps allow children to learn and achieve positive outcomes from their experiences. Life itself is about experiencing, and camp allows children to learn to overcome obstacles and challenges in an environment that is safe and fun.

8.  SELF CONFIDENCE Children’s successes at camp can build self-assurance and a sense of independence. As they grow, change, and rely on the skills learned and experiences lived in their younger years, children can gain more faith in their own ability to succeed. This in itself will help raise the child’s self-confidence. Decision-making depends, among other things, on how self-confident one is; camp gives a child plenty of opportunities to make decisions and choices—from the activities they participate in to the meals they eat, and the friends they make.

9.  TEAMWORK Camping provides children the opportunity to develop leadership and fellowship skills and the opportunity to work as part of a team. These are important skills that will serve a child throughout his or her life.
