Dear Sanford Community,The Annual Report gives us a chance to reach out to our community and thank you for your generous support. Sanford parents, alumni, and alumni families continue to make Sanford a priority with their charitable giving.

I am pleased to report that our Annual Fund raised over $400,000 in 2012–13. These funds directly support the operations of every facet of our school. Special thanks to our Assistant Director of Development, Janice Payne, who joined our school community at the beginning of the 2012 school year. Janice and all of our Annual Fund grade level parent chairs led a concerted and successful drive.

In addition, the 2013 Sanford Home & School auction raised nearly $218,000. These funds have been targeted to support increasing the school’s instructional technology, including the introduction of campus-wide wireless network (see page 13) as well as significant improvements in each of our three divisions. Kudos to our auction chairs, Pam Allingham and Diane Davenport, and their team of volunteers for organizing a hugely successful and fun evening.

As we look ahead to 2014, Sanford continues to operate from a position of financial strength. The school maintains a very small debt load; Sanford’s modest endowment provides essential funds to our budget; our alumni, alumni families, and current families continue to support Sanford financially. Perhaps most importantly, Sanford continues to attract and retain many of the finest students and families in the area, coming from Delaware, Pennsylvania,

Maryland and New Jersey. More than 100 new students began their journeys this fall. I am certain that they will experience the same challenging, nurturing and personalized education that our students have enjoyed for 83 years—the Sanford tradition continues.

Of course, we are also grateful to have a loyal group of donors who continue to go above and beyond for our students and teachers. Sanford thanks you!

Best,

Mark J. Anderson Head of School

trusty “NO” stamp, he waged war on sloppy writing and clumsy thinking. In teaching his US History and World Civilizations classes, Lloyd was exacting in a way that could be infuriating. But I learned that even as he critiqued your work, or gently mocked you, he did it with a twinkle in his eye. That twinkle was an invitation. Any student who went to ask for more help would find a teacher willing to do whatever it took to help her succeed. Believing in the potential of each of his students, Lloyd demanded that they take responsibility for working up to that potential. His former students will miss visiting his classroom to sit in his rocking chair and update him on our progress. But the Johns Award for Excellence in Teaching—an endowed award that will honor one extraordinary teacher each year—will help to ensure that future students will be encouraged and challenged by teachers inspired by his talent and commitment to learning.

Across campus in the Math-Science Building, André Dagenais taught the aspiring physicians, engineers and physicists of Sanford with intelligence, devotion, and an unflagging sense of fun. The back closets of the building are packed with toys, demonstrations, and quirky experiments that demonstrate André’s love for the subject. It wasn’t unusual, his students remember, for normal class to be cancelled so students could play with dumbbells, spin around in office chairs, or hold a mock astronomy debate defending the merits of geocentric or heliocentric models of the solar system. André joined the play with gusto. As supervisor of the Punkin Chunkin

By Ella Wagner ’09

When prospective parents and students first encounter Sanford, they are often drawn to the verdant campus, dotted with buildings and laced with sidewalks along which students scurry from class to class. On nice days, a visitor might find a ninth grade English class using the Quad to act out a scene from Julius Caesar, or a biology section measuring the pH of the pond. The beautiful surroundings seem the ideal place for learning and discovery. But bricks, mortar, and pine trees alone don’t define Sanford. The faculty represents the school’s heart and soul: inspiring Sanford students to grow into young men and women ready to step off the shady campus into the wider world.

This year our community wistfully celebrated the retirement of three of the pillars of Sanford’s stellar faculty. In their combined decades of service to Sanford, Lloyd Johns and Sue and André Dagenais have taught, mentored, and inspired hundreds of students. Their talent and passion defined their students’ experiences at Sanford, and continue to influence them in the many paths they’ve taken after graduation. For these alumni, Lloyd, Sue, and André aren’t simply teachers at Sanford—they are Sanford. The hills and the pine trees are just a backdrop.

As an alumna of Sanford myself, I remember the mixture of excitement and apprehension I felt on my first day of AP US History with Lloyd Johns. His reputation for toughness far preceded him. In that respect, the class did not disappoint (and, as a result, prepared me for the many college history courses I would go on to take). Wielding a red pen and his

team, he helped and answered questions while letting the students build a machine that was truly theirs. He was always available for extra help, often spending extra hours in the classroom going above and beyond the subject matter for students who were interested. In his classes, it was not enough for students to arrive at the right answers to problems; he stressed that clear communication of methods and processes was essential to scientific work, a message that has stuck with his students through college and beyond. André’s skills as a teacher prepared his students thoroughly for future study and work, but it was his enthusiasm and love for the subject that truly inspired them.

For the past several years, Sue Dagenais’ title at Sanford was “Director of Counseling and Learning Services,” but that phrase does not even begin to describe the many hats she has worn and roles she has filled in the service of all members of the community. In twenty-seven years of service to Sanford, Sue taught English and served as Dean of Students and Head of Upper School, before moving into her final role as Director of Counseling. She was indeed a counselor, and the ideal one. Nearly always to be found in the du Pont Library when needed, she was ready with a box of tissues, a listening ear, and a warm hug, and was as prepared to give advice about personal problems as about academic ones. Sue, always concerned about the physical and emotional well-being of everyone in the community, could spot a stressed-out student (or teacher) from all the way across campus and know just what to say to help. She was always committed to supporting student initiatives; as an advisor for the Upper School’s Spectrum club, for example, she helped students focus their passion for gay rights into meaningful, impactful initiatives that reached the wider Sanford community. To all of her roles at Sanford, Sue brought the characteristic warmth, wisdom, and humor that always made talking to her a pleasure

and a comfort. The Dagenais Award for Leadership in Education will reward future Sanford teachers whose spirit of leadership and passion for their profession exemplify the legacies Sue and André have left behind at Sanford.

Lloyd, Sue, and André are more than just exceptional teachers, mentors, and colleagues—they are institutions at Sanford School. As they move into the next stage of their lives, the Sanford family has taken time to honor their legacies, and looks forward to great things from the students and teachers they have inspired.

At the end of the 2012–2013 school year, the Board of Trustees approved a Strategic Plan which school leaders will use to guide Sanford for the next five years. The plan is the culmination of two years of work led by a Strategic Planning Committee (comprised of trustees, members of the faculty and staff, and parents) and John Littleford, a respected school management consultant.

Delineating an ambitious and exciting future for Sanford, the plan focuses on five substantive areas:

CeNTeRS OF exCeLLeNCe—Developing Centers of Excellence that will be exceptional compared to schools in our area, interesting to students and parents, and relevant to the goals of a well-educated person in the years to come.

FINANCeS AND FISCAL SUSTAINABILITY—Securing Sanford’s long-term financial sustainability by enhancing existing revenue streams, developing new non-tuition income sources, continuing to apply a disciplined approach to our cost structure, and formalizing and enhancing our sound fiscal management policies.

CAPITAL PROJeCTS AND FACILITIeS—Providing a safe, up-to-date and attractive physical environment for the development of our students’ talents.

MARKeTING AND ReTeNTION—Communicating our character and our value proposition outside the Sanford community, in order to attract new families and maintain enrollment at levels that will preserve and protect Sanford’s unique character.

Meeting the goals of the Strategic Plan will require enthusiasm, dedication and hard work. The Sanford community is ready for the challenge.

We Developed Our Strategic Plan

For more information about the plan, refer to Ambition in Action. The document was mailed to all members of the Sanford community in early October. If you did not receive your copy, contact us at 302.239.5263.

2013 Auction Funds Campus-wide TechnologyOver 280 parents, past parents, alumni, faculty and staff celebrated Mardi Gras style in April, raising nearly $218,000 in support of technology and other projects to benefit Sanford students.

Before the event kicked off, an anonymous donor started the excitement with a $50,000 gift to create a wireless campus. This

gift was added to by several family members. The evening of the event, numerous parents gave cash gifts totaling $32,000 to purchase classroom technology for students. The Johnston Family closed out the evening donating $15,000 towards a Middle School MAC lab.

An array of auction items and games made for a fun and financially successful evening. Special thanks to co-chairs Pam Allingham and Diane Davenport and their committees for their efforts in making the night a success.

Fifth grade meets 100% Participation goal... Again! Pre-K Parents Join Them!Last year, every family in the fourth grade class made a gift to the 2011–2012 Annual Fund—a first for Sanford. Fifth Grade Chair Gina Sykora was determined to duplicate that success again in the 2012–2013 campaign. She was successful in meeting the 100% challenge,

due to the generosity of the parents of the Class of 2020! Special thanks to Gina and all our fifth grade parents for supporting the school with a gift.

Last year’s newest parents, those in the Pre-K class, also achieved 100% participation—reaching that goal on June 30th. Thanks to Diane Kedash for inspiring all those families to join her in making a gift! The success of the fifth grade and Pre-K was celebrated with a get-together for all those parents.

Watch out eighth grade parents! Gina is chairing our 2013–2014 Annual Fund efforts, in addition to leading the sixth grade campaign. She will be asking both groups for 100% participation.

From the top: Gina Sykora (with Head of

School Mark Anderson and Stan Sykora) and Diane Kedash (right, with David Kedash)

spearheaded the 100% Annual Fund

campaigns for their classes.

Class of 2013 makes Their First Alumni gift to the Annual FundFifty-eight members of the Class of 2013 made their first annual fund gift as new alumni. Six members of the class co-chaired the Sanford Senior Spirit Challenge, encouraging their friends to join them in supporting the school. Twelve members of the class gave $20.13 in honor of their graduation year, earning them a “Fear the Tree” T-shirt, designed by the student co-chairs. Several of the donors honored a teacher, parent or friend who impacted their time at Sanford. The challenge resulted in a generous $389 gift from the graduates.

Special thanks to the first Senior Spirit Challenge co-chairs (Robert Abishek, Will Campbell, Brett Humphreys, Alex Weinstein, Morgan Williams, and Megan Yung) and to all the students who made the challenge a success! What a wonderful legacy.

The Evergreen Society is representative of the Sanford Pine, the school’s ubiquitous symbol. The society recognizes the commitment that members of our community make by choosing to secure the school’s future through a planned gift or by including Sanford as a charitable recipient in their wills.

The symbolism of the evergreen conveys that the gift these members bestow upon the school will, in fact, provide both shelter and color throughout all seasons of a school’s life—through both the beautiful springs of renewal, the spectacular colors of the fall, and the harshest winters. These seasons parallel not only the life of the student body within a school year, but a school within its life cycle. Through these seasons, the evergreen remains a fixed constant—tall, straight, and proud. Those who become members of the Evergreen Society are indeed securing that constancy.

Listed below are the members of the Evergreen Society, including those whose generous pledges have been fulfilled.
