these risks at an early stage. To illustrate the problem of not
knowing your numbers, year onyear this person paid littleattention to what to some wouldbe an obvious critical healthcrisis. As a result, this personcould barely walk 100 yards, tiea shoelace, fasten a seatbelt orbathe. This person would stopbreathing in her sleep. She hada life which she described assuicide by instalments. You would be forgiven for
thinking that this person couldnever be you or me but let metell you that weight gain happensinsidiously. Here's the issue: the UK is
fast approaching an obesitycrisis of epidemic scale.According to recent statistics, by2020, 70 per cent of the UKpopulation will be classed asoverweight or obese. The current annual cost to the
NHS to carry out gastric bypasssurgery is £32.3 million and thisfigure is set to rise to £4.2 billionper annum when we take intoconsideration the cost of treatingother obesity-related diseases, diabetes for example. And thecost to the tax payer by 2020 isset to rise to £9.6 billion. One
way or another you will bepaying for this crisis. There is some good news: I
am delighted to tell you that thisperson now enjoys a healthierlifestyle and is well on her way toachieving her desired weight. Ishould know - that person wasme.
So, what is the solution?Following a diet and exerciseplan can work well until you stepoff the plan - like I've done forthe last 20 years. Weightlossgroups and health spas makelots of money from people likeme. My last recourse was toconsider invasive surgery whichcarries its own risks such aspost-operative infection, abdominal hernias, gallstones, leakages, ulcers and deepthrombo phlebitis. Then I had my defining

For many years it was believed that training with
weight provided few, if any, benefits and, in fact,
would reduce flexibility and impair
neuromuscular coordination.
Why weight aspart of your exercise?
This is especially trueamong the femalepopulation, many of
whom had been led to believethat having a strong-lookingphysique or being strong, wasunfeminine. These myths keptmany from enjoying the benefitsof weight training. Only a fewpeople realise the impact weighttraining has on fat loss and injuryrehabilitation, as well as helpingthem with everyday activitiesfrom shopping to sex. Apparently many people think
building muscle mass is easy.Almost 100% of the women I'vecoached (and some of the men)have been worried about gettingbig, 'bulky' muscles. If this is aconcern for you, let me put youat ease. The opposite proves tobe true; gaining muscle bulk isfar from easy for men and evenmore difficult for women. Womencan make dramatic improvementwhen they use weight trainingexercises without fear ofdeveloping unwanted musclebulk and it results in a healthierand more attractive appearance.Weight training research
studies repeatedly have shownan acute post-exercise increasein a concentration oftestosterone in blood in men with
no change or increase in women.Testosterone is a steroidhormone which is made in thetestes in males and in theovaries in women.Testosterone, apart from being
needed to form and maintain themale sex organs and promotesecondary male sexcharacteristics, also functions asa hormone that facilitates musclegrowth as well as bonedevelopment and maintenance.
What is weight training?Resistance training, also referredto as weight training, is designedto improve and increase musclestrength, size, speed, and power.Weight training not only includesstrength training, weightliftingand circuit training, but can alsobe associated with other forms ofconditioning such as waterworkouts, body weight exercise, impact landing, resistive ballexercises and even activities ofdaily living. Weight training is an important
part of a fat-burning programme, but is not 'the best' fat-burningexercise. The best way to burnfat is through a combination ofcardio, weights and nutrition, alldirected towards theachievement of a specific fitness

goal. Weight training should notbe confused with bodybuildingbecause they have differentobjectives. Bodybuilders useweight training to develop theirmuscles for size, shape andsymmetry for competition inbodybuilding contests anddevelop extremely low levels ofbody fat rather than just forlooking and feeling great.
Who else can benefit fromweight training?Weight training is not only used
as a form of improving physicalattractiveness, according to TheAmerican College of SportMedicine (ACSM) numerousresearch studies have shownthat weight training has elicitedimprovements in muscularfitness for a wide range of thepopulation and for a multitude ofhealth-related purposes such as:[ People in rehabilitation or withan acquired disability, such asfollowing a stroke or orthopaedicsurgery, use strength training tostrengthen weak muscles and asa key factor to optimise recovery.[ Youths use resistance trainingto prevent injury, improve athleticand motor skills performance andimprove overall health. [ Older people's use of weighttraining has been shown to be apotent stimulus for combatingsarcopenia and improvingfunction. Sarcopenia is the lossof muscle associated withageing, and it is associated withmany dilapidating conditionslinked with ageing such asweakness, poor balance, andincreased risk of falls. Otherpotent benefits in elderlyindividuals include effects onbone density, metabolism andweight control and insulinresistance.
How can weight training beperformed?Resistance exercise can beperformed using a variety ofequipment; in general trainingequipment can be divided intotwo broad categories: machines
and free weights. Machines havebeen designed to stress everymajor muscle group. Theyinclude weight machines forresistance, isokinetic machinesand pneumatic devices. Themost common forms of freeweights are dumbbells, barbellsand medicine and Swiss balls. Allforms of strength trainingequipment play a vital role in thedevelopment of muscularstrength. However, it is best touse a variety of trainingequipment in your strengthtraining programme due to eachtype of equipment's limitation.
Prevention strategies [ Eat properly. Weight traininghas also been shown to benefitdieters as it inhibits lean bodymass loss (as opposed to fatloss) when under a caloricdeficit. [ Increase trainingstrategy gradually. [ Alternateaggressive with less aggressivetraining weeks, allowing sufficientrecovery between trainingsessions. [ Get an adequateamount of sleep. [ Makeadjustments in training intensityas needed. [ Weight trainingposes risks to the cardiovascularsystem, and individuals withsevere cardiovascular conditionssuch as uncontrolledhypertension and unstableangina should not participateuntil their conditions are undercontrol. [ Care must be takento ensure that the equipment isacceptable for use by childrenand adolescents. CG

Essential oils are a
natural way to relieve
the common ailments
that most of us experience
during the summer months. So,
to get you started, we have
prepared a list of our favourite
Summer is here, and with it comes more time to
spend in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, more
time outdoors means we are more prone to
insect bites, sunburn and muscle aches from the
extra activity.
A Summer first aid kit
'must haves' for your summer
first aid kit.
Start with the basics - a clean
cloth that can be used for hot
and cold compresses, or to clean
the area prior to treatment,
plasters, a carrier oil, and some
aloe vera gel to quickly soothe
those barbeque burns or tender
sundrenched skin.
As many of the popular
essential oils have a variety of
healing properties, we need only
recommend three for you to
include in your kit.
The first is Tea Tree.
Tea Tree oil is antifungal and
antiseptic, and this makes it
great for conditions like burns,
athlete's foot, cuts and scrapes,
and itching insect bites. Tea Tree
can be applied neat - which
means it doesn't require a carrier
oil - ensuring ease of use.
Like Tea Tree, Lavender oil
can also be used on its own.
This fact, along with its range of
uses makes it another of our
'must have' essential oils.
Lavender oil can be used to
combat allergies, bruises, burns,
headaches, insect bites, muscle
aches and sunburn.
Third on our list is Geranium.
It is also antiseptic and
antifungal, making it a good
choice for cuts, sores and fungal
infections. As well, geranium oil
is reputed to have a lessening
effect on the appearance of
cellulite - being swimsuit season,
this seems a definite property of
general interest!
Keeping those pesky insects
at bay is another matter. Two
essential oils excellent for use as
insect repellents are clove and
peppermint. Simply mix a few
drops of either of these oils with
a carrier, and apply to exposed
skin.
Make the most of your
summer, the natural way! CG

awareness through a deeperunderstanding of how ourfeelings, behaviour and healthissues are interwoven. We willintroduce the framework andphilosophical underpinningsbehind the META-Medicineapproach.
Go beyond therapy ortechnique...META-Medicine is not anothertherapy! It is a bio-psycho-social(mind-body-social) system ofhealth understanding: a newphilosophy and methodologywhich enables you to understandthe root cause and meaningfulprocess of any health issue. META-Medicine allows you touncover why a symptom ispresent, what the underlyingemotional cause is, and whysome issues become chronic. Therefore it precedes any
therapy: once we know thereason behind the health issue,we can identify and apply themost appropriate therapies foreach client in a more preciseway.
Include and transcend…The term 'meta' comes fromGreek, and means to 'go aboveand beyond'. META-Medicineprovides a platform ofunderstanding that includes andtranscends all existingapproaches within aphilosophical framework. Insteadof narrowing, it widens ourperspective, as we developawareness of all levels of being -biological, psychological, socialand emotional - and theirinterconnectedness.Take the example of a person
with chronic neck pain, who hasregular massage to relieve thepain, but wants to resolve itcompletely. Using META-Medicine analysis, we trace thecause back to a conflict with hisboss, in which the client feltunfairly treated. Seeing his bossdaily triggers his feelings ofinjustice. Resolution of the issuerequires an integrative approach:enabling the client to release hisfeelings of injustice (emotional),overcome limiting beliefs(psychological), and takeresponsibility for changing his

What is META-Medicine? META-Medicine is an advanced,
comprehensive and multi-dimensional
approach to understanding the
precise cause of health issues and
method for mind-body healing,
utilising the latest advances in
coaching and therapy.
It offers health professionalsan integrative frameworkthat synthesises yet goes
beyond ancient wisdom andmodern scientific understanding. It redefines our understanding ofhealth, dis-ease and the healingprocess completely.
META-Medicine enablespractitioners to work with thebody's innate intelligence, uncover the emotional cause ofclient's health issues, activatethe self-healing response andcreate the opportunity foraccelerated personaldevelopment. META-Medicineempowers both practitioners andclients by bringing greater self-

reactions (social), as well asworking with the neck muscles tosupport the healing (biological).
A quantum leap for
integrative medicine... Most of the current attempts atintegrative healthcare centre onoffering complementary andalternative therapies alongsidemodern medicine. META-Medicine enables a
more profound integration.Because it explains the precisemechanism of dis-ease andhealing, it provides a commonplatform for otherwise divergentapproaches, and also illuminateswhy, how and when varioustherapeutic approaches will orwill not work.META-Medicine provides the
only vehicle currently capable ofbridging the chasm betweenpractitioners working with themind and those working with thebody so that on our courses, youwill see life coaches, massagetherapists and physiotherapistslearning alongsidepsychotherapists, doctors, acupuncturists and energyworkers.
Trust the body's
intelligence...One of the most prevalentunderlying beliefs about health inthe Western world is that illnessis a mistake. Most people regardsymptoms are random andunlucky misfortunes, caused bythe body's error of judgement. Many believe we simply need toeradicate symptoms in order torestore health. Mistrusting thebody's ability to self-heal, weoften seek a quick fix, whetherconventional or alternative, tosuppress or remove 'problemsymptoms'.
The result is a deep andwidespread fear of symptoms, illness and dis-ease. Theappearance of symptoms elicitsa fear-generating loop ofquestions for which we have noclear answer, such as 'Why haveI got this? Why now? What doesit mean? What have I done? When is it going to go away? Is itgoing to go away?'!
META-Medicine enables aconscious shift from fearingsymptoms to seeing them asmeaningful. It dissolves the fearby giving us a detailedunderstanding of the bio-logicaland evolutionary intelligencebehind all our symptoms. Welearn that the goal of the body-mind is to ensure self-protectionand survival.
From fearing symptoms to
defining the cause…With META-Medicine, ourquestioning shifts from helplessto curious. We still ask 'Whyhave I got this symptom? Whynow?', but instead of having noclear answer, we are able totrack back to the specific causeor trigger. Rather than blamingourselves, we see the symptomas an unconscious reaction tothe trigger. With ourunderstanding of the TwoPhases, we can even predictwhat's going to happenthroughout the 'dis-easeprocess', and when thesymptoms are likely to abate.
Uncover the meaning
behind any symptom... We begin to trust our intelligentbody once we understand thebio-logical and emotionalmeaning behind our symptoms. To achieve this we first need to
look at the function of the organ. Then we can uncover why weget a change in function. For example, the tendons and
ligaments in the knee enable usto walk, run, kick and moveforwards. If an individual has aknee problem, such asinflammation, they must haveexperienced an issue with theircapability to kick something awayor move forwards in an area oftheir life. It's no wonderfootballers often get kneeinjuries! Taking another example, the oesophagus enables us toswallow food. So if we get anissue like gastric reflux, then weknow that there has been an
12 Choice - Medical
Jun 12 www.choicehealthmag.com
inability to swallow or acceptsomething. This refers todistasteful food, information orsituations that we do not wish toaccept or assimilate.
But what about risk
factors?… The concept of symptoms havinga bio-logical meaning is a bigleap in awareness. When mostpeople are asked to consider thepossible causes of illness, theycite risk factors such as genetics, environmental pollutants, lifestylefactors like exercise, diet, alcoholconsumption and smoking, orexposure to viruses and bacteria.Yet these are incomplete
hypotheses, explaining neitherwhy a symptom appears at aspecific moment in anindividual's life nor whysomebody could meet all of therisk factor criteria, yet remainsymptom-free, or have none ofthe risk factors and still get ill.Furthermore, as the risk
factors are generic and apply tomost chronic illnesses, they failto explain why people experiencedifferent symptoms.
Stress! A precise emotional
connection to illness...Of all the risk factors commonlycited, stress is usually primary.Even within conventionalmedicine, it's well documentedthat stress is a key cause of themajority of modern illnesses, such as headaches, skincomplaints, digestive issues, musculoskeletal pains, circulatory disorders and evencancers. There is an interesting
question that goes unasked andunanswered: Why does thegeneral problem of stress resultin such a multitude of issues? In
other words, why does oneperson suffer from eczema, whileanother gets stomach cramp, and another has back pain, yetall are due to stress? META-Medicine provides the
specific connection betweenemotional responses to stressand physiological reactions. Theemotion-organ connection islogical and hard-wired: specificnegative emotions lead tospecific organ reactions. Returning to our above
example, the specific stressbehind an oesophageal issue isa stress around feeling 'I can'taccept this!', whereas the stressbehind a gut issue is a stressaround feeling 'I can't let go ofthat!' and is often related toanger.
Advancing emotional
intelligence...This knowledge of the preciseconnection between symptomsand our emotional reactionsunderlines the central importanceof emotions in health. Awarenessand release of our emotionalbarriers is a key aspect ofhealing that has been overlookedby many other systems. META-Medicine is supported
by the latest research inneuroscience (Dr JosephLedoux) which demonstrates thatemotions are brain-based controlsystems that shape our biologicalresponses. Most of us have learned to
block, deny or suppress those
emotions we have labelled asnegative. META-Medicineteaches us the importance ofacknowledging and acceptingour emotions - they make usaware of what's going on deepwithin us, and therefore, areguides to self-healing.
Illuminating the shadows...On a general level, we developan intuitive ability, tuning into thecore issues behind commonsymptom patterns. For example,we see the feeling of inferioritybeneath musculoskeletaldisorders, and the suppressedanger underlying digestiveissues. It is not uncommon for aMETA-Health Coach to be askedwhether they are psychic, for thesystem gives us accurateinsights! On an individual level, the
specific symptoms experiencedby ourselves can be explored toreveal the deeply subconsciouslimiting beliefs, misperceptions, emotional incongruence andinner conflicts that are keepingus tuck and blocking healing andpersonal growth. We would like to leave you
with a couple of questions toconsider. What would happen ifwe begin to see symptoms as anatural part of growth andevolution, rather than somethingto fear and avoid? What wouldwe learn from the body, and whatinsights would we gain into ourown journey of personal andspiritual development? CG

Then, what about thesafety when it comes toelectro smog from
electromagnetic radiationemissions to which our familiesand pets are exposed daily?Electromagnetic radiation
pollution has increaseddramatically due to the risingnumber of terminal devices andtheir required infrastructure.Today, we all live surrounded bya dense network of mobilecommunications towers (masts),satellite frequencies, transmitterstations, and high-voltage supplylines (pylons). Mobiles/smartphones, digital
cordless DECT phones, PCs andlaptops, household appliances,GPS and wireless systems areall a part of everyday life. We allappreciate these indispensable, modern, mobile communicationaids. However, the effect ofelectromagnetic frequencies(EMF) emitted by these handyhelpers is on the rise and mayhave a noticeable adverse effect
on the health and wellbeing ofmany users.EMFs disrupts the natural life
cycles by interfering with andchanging the biologicalprocesses. It manifests itself asstress for the body and the mind. The body then tries to counteractthe arising imbalance, but it isunable to do this due topermanent exposure to thesurrounding electro smog. Therefore, the body isundergoing a constantadjustment process, which dueto the increased energyconsumption, weakens theimmune system and manifestsitself in various symptoms suchas headaches, nervousness, concentration loss and memorydefects as well as low energy. The weakening of the immune
system together with otherfactors then furthers variousother diseases including tumourdevelopment as 25% of thestudies are reporting.Due to our own electrical and

Being very clingy and notlooking at strangers issomething my son did.
He'd walked at eight months andmissed the crawling stage in hisattempts to get out into theworld. When he was diagnosedwith dyslexia at the age of six,my father, a dyslexia teacher, told me that there was no cureand we had to learn to live withit.I refused to believe nothing
could be done so I researcheduntil I found a condition calledNeuro Developmental Delaywhich encompassed dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, Asperger's,ADHD, dyscalculia, latebedwetting, and mutism.I knew I had to learn this to
help my son, and I did. Theresults were amazing, the firstnew skill he had was eyetracking which changed his life.Within weeks, people werebringing their children to me andI started helping them too. I hadbuilt an accidental practice, withpeople visiting me from severalcounties away, I even hadenquiries from Colorado withinthe first few weeks.
Preschool signs to look for[ Late crawling/walking [ Late
talking [ Not rolling over[ Not being able to sit still[ Glue ear [ Misseddevelopmental stages, such asnever crawled or bottom shuffler.
These are early signs that
may lead on to other clues
as a child ages[ daydreaming in class [ clumsiness [ poorhandwriting [ short attentionspan/frequently loses place andfatigues easily/rubs eyes duringor after short periods of reading[ head is frequently tilted to oneside or one shoulder isnoticeably higher [ turns or tiltshead to see [ squinting orclosing or covering of one eye
or excessive blinking or squinting[ poor hand-eye coordination [ holds the book or objectunusually close [ omits smallwords [ uses finger to read orloses place when reading, line toline and word to word [ reverses or transposesnumbers, letters, or short wordslike 'was' and 'saw' [ the childseems bright, but can't keep upwith the work expected of him [ only being able to read forshort periods of time [ headaches or eyestrain ordouble vision [ nausea ordizziness/motion sickness
These symptoms are usually theresult of oculomotor (visual) andvestibular system (ears/balance)problems. Children with doublevision do not know they are notsupposed to see like that, theythink everyone does. In fact, unless you discover a symptomand tell the child that it is notright, they think everyone has thesame problems as them. So theywon't tell you.Another problem I have found
is that opticians often only checkfor static vision, they don't checktracking and other problems. Soeye problems are ruled out, but itis the very thing they need helpwith. This happened to us: my son
had two eye tests which showedhis vision was fine, but he couldnot track, he had Irlen Syndrome(light sensitivity, as do I), and nothree-dimensional vision(stereopsis). This is all fixed now,he is doing well at school, though in Year 5 his science is atsecondary school level. CG
You know something's wrong, but what? You
know that your child isn't interacting with the
world how you think they should, but no one
seems to know what to do. Sounds familiar?
It happened to me.

As a therapist or practitioner do you find you are
often called upon to be a keeper of secrets?
Rather like hairdressers who often hear clients
bear their souls and confide secrets not even
shared with their partners, therapists are often
expected to offer more than healing hands
especially when it comes to the general health
and wellbeing of the client
Has childbirth destroyed your sex life?
menopause, then the problem
can get worse. It’s thought that
half of women over the age of 50
suffer from stress incontinence.
Clinical studies also revealed
that at least 25 per cent of
women indicated that their sex
lives were adversely affected by
post-natal incontinence.
Women that do report to the
GP are usually given a sheet of
exercises (devised by Arnold
Kegel MD). Sadly it would seem
that the Kegel exercises per se
have little efficacy. Clinical
observations have recognised
that more than a third of women
are unable to identify and
correctly exercise their pelvic
floor muscles, even with
supervision. Studies show that
Kegel invented the world’s first
biofeedback instrument the

An Aromatherapist told
me recently that one of
the issues that often
comes up with women is the
intimate problem of
embarrassing leaks or urinary
stress incontinence (USI). It
seems many women are keeping
the incontinence pads industry
alive and well because they’re
too embarrassed to tell their
GPs, and it seems to be one of
the last taboos, rarely touched
upon in the media.
This prompted me to research,
and, astonishingly, four million
UK women suffer urine leaks
when they sneeze, cough or
exercise. One in four women will
experience USI at some time in
their lives, and it affects at least
a third of new mums – bouncing
on trampolines with the kids can
be a big problem! Problems
caused by childbirth will not go
away unless women take
positive action to improve the
strength of the pelvic floor. Do
nothing, and when the muscles
begin to naturally lose muscle
tone, during and after the
training exercises but importantly
– against resistance.
Fortunately, there is an
inexpensive and rather brilliant
solution in the form of the Pelvic
Toner. This simple yet effective
vaginal exercise device is
recommended by NICE and is
available on prescription. It’s
designed to be used in
conjunction with the Kegel
exercises as it helps you
confidently identify the correct
muscles and then allows you to
squeeze against a gentle
resistance provided by small
springs in the device. It’s been
proven in clinical studies to be as
effective as the current NHS
follow-on treatment of
physiotherapy and in some
cases surgery, but at a minimal
cost to the NHS.
Eighty-six per cent of users
reported a significant
improvement within two weeks
and over 80 per cent reported an
improved sex life – a welcome
benefit! The problem is that
many GPs are not aware of the
product but women can request
it. Perhaps when this ‘secret’ is
shared with you, you can help
raise awareness by suggesting it
to them? CG

It is a pain-free and relaxingtherapy suitable for a widerange of acute and chronic
muscular-skeletal or neurologicalconditions. This therapy has been used in
the UK since 1997 when CarolePreen brought it back fromAustralia and developed itfurther, linking it with meridiantherapy and the effects of thehuman energy field.Extensive work has been used
on thousands of clients over theyears, and a lot of the detailshave already been published incase studies and can be read onthe Neuroskeletal Re-alignmentTherapy Association website atwww.neuroskeletal.co.uk Thiscase study, like all the otherspublished so far, is anecdotal, but once again proves theeffectiveness of this amazingtherapy. The therapist wasPippa-Jane Thomas who has a
practice in Northampton and shewas taught by and now teacheswith Carole Preen in London atMorley College in WestminsterBridge Road. The course runsover eight weekends and fulldetails can be found on theNSRT website as can a list ofpractitioners and the areas theywork from.
Presenting problemsThis female client presented withchronic headaches andmigraines, which she hadsuffered with for about 30 years. She had experienced a whiplashinjury in 2007 from a left side-oncollision, and unfortunatelyanother one in 2008; this onebeing a right side shunt. Shesuffered headaches on a regularbasis, almost permanentlysuffering from pain. The clientalso showed that her neck hadpoor overall mobility and it was
constantly very stiff and sore withshortening of thesternocleidomastiod, scalenesand the trapiezius muscles onthe left side. As a result, she helda lot of tension in her shouldersthat in turn were leading to stressand muscle spasm in her back. This affected the trapezius, thelevator scapulae, the rhomboidminor and major spreading intothe supraspinatus, theinfraspinatus and the teres majorwhere there was also furtherreferred pain down the back intothe latissimus dorsi and theerector spinae. She also sufferedsciatic symptoms, which arethought to be compensatoryeffects, with pain in thequadratus lumborum beingaffected, leading to musclespasm in the right buttock area,

radiating down her right leg. We hoped through NSRT
treatments to relieve the tensionin the neck by re-aligning it andthus reducing the frequency ofthe headaches. Also for thepelvic region we wanted to helpease the sciatic symptoms andallow for a decent night's sleep. It was agreed that we wouldbook in six treatments followingthe initial consultation, where afull postural analysis wasundertaken as well as a fullmedical history. The treatmentwas explained to the client; thatit is extremely relaxing and thatshe might feel sensations in herbody whilst it was being carriedout. We also always advise afterthe session that the client goeshome and rests and has a hotbath before bed to help the
muscles relax and to get a reallygood night's sleep; most clientsreport sleeping really deeply onthe night of their treatments.
Treatment 1She was a bit stressed beforethe first treatment as she hadbeen rushing around and she didhave a bit of headache before Istarted to treat her, or as shesaid, it "felt fuzzy"! During thefirst treatment the client reportedfeeling sensations of tingling inher left arm radiating in to thehand and this continued after thetreatment for 24 hours. Also hereyes started to stream after thetreatment, but that only lasted afew minutes. The client did feelvery relaxed both during andafter the treatment, which isimportant to allow the therapy tohave its fullest effect. She alsofound that the fuzzy feeling shehad had before the treatmenthad now gone and her head felteasier as she put it. She feltreally well for the next few daysafter and stayed relaxed; shealso had a few body "judders" afew days after treatmentexperienced in the neck on theleft side and in the left shoulder.
Treatment 2During the follow-up consultationpreceding the second treatmentthe client reported that she hadexperienced some more bodyjudders again on the left side ofher neck and left shoulder. It wasexplained that any sensationsuch as this is a good indicationthat the therapy is having apositive effect. She had sleptvery well and felt very relaxedafter her initial treatment. Herneck didn't feel as stiff and shefelt quite comfortable after doingsome gardening (which normally
she would not be able to dowithout periodic breaks). Shealso reported that she had nothad as many headaches and theones she had experienced wherenot as severe and also notlasting as long as they used to.
Treatment 3By the third session, the clientstated that her neck was feelingfabulous! This was so excitingafter only two treatments so sheknew it was really working forher. She said that it felt free andthat she could rotate her neckwithout any discomfort. Moreimportantly, she had experiencedno headaches since the lastappointment. Her lumbar backpain had also eased off, she hadalso noticed that with thetreatment and the exercises forthe sciatic symptoms that hersciatica had also eased off andshe was sleeping very well.Generally she was feeling muchmore relaxed. Since the lasttreatment she had just brokenher little toe after dropping a boxon it, so this was treated withadditional joint points thatstopped the toe from throbbing.Once the treatment was over shestated that she was alreadylooking forward to the next one!
Treatment 4Again she felt very deeplyrelaxed after the treatment andvery peaceful. She had stillexperienced no furtherheadaches. Her neck still feltfree and had good mobility. Shestated that she was free fromback pain and had bettermovement in the lumbar region. She reported that the symptomsof sciatica had also abated. Shejust kept saying, "My neck feelsso free!!!"

Treatment 5Before treatment five of NSRTthe client had received a deeptissue massage with the use oftrigger point therapy by Pippa-Jane. This is also taught on theNSRT diploma course. At theconsultation she said she wasvery, very relaxed and her lowerback felt really good, as did hershoulders. Although her neck stillfelt good, she had had aheadache earlier that day but ithad gone at the time of thetreatment.
Treatment 6At the consultation she reportedfeeling relaxed after thetreatment, really calm and herbody felt like a dead weight. Shefelt her right shoulder shiftingaround, like it rotated in acomplete circle. She also saidher neck was the best it hadbeen for years and the mobilityshe had gained was wonderful, both in her neck and shoulders. She was so pleased because herheadaches had eased off quitedramatically, and as a result shewas able to take fewerpainkillers. The client has written a
testimonial on her treatment andhas agreed to allow Pippa-Janeto publish it along with thisarticle: The client to this day isstill pain free and if on the rareoccasion she does have aheadache she will only take onepainkiller and the headacheeases off, she is so happy tohave her quality of life back. Giving your baby a regular massage shows her
she is loved and respected and helps to secure a
lasting relationship between you both. It is a gift
for life!
From the moment they are
born, babies actively
seek interaction with
others and, through play and just
being around people in everyday
life, their unique little
personalities become
increasingly apparent to their
parents, who can then tune into
their infant's likes and dislikes,
strengths and sensitivities.
Loving touch from a parent
plays an enormous part in
establishing physical and
emotional connections with an
infant and, during the last
decade, there has been a huge
upsurge in professionals working
with parents and infants to offer
infant massage to parents who
are seeking to learn more about
the wonderful benefits.
Bernard Brazelton, child
psychologist, believes that touch
is central to the development of
the bonding relationship between
parent and child. Infant massage
is a form of positive touch and
an extremely important form of
communication between parent
and baby, therefore aiding the
attachment and bonding
process.
A recent systematic review
(Underdown et al, 2006) found
that infant massage has
beneficial effects in terms of
reducing stress hormones
(cortisol), promoting sleep and
promoting positive interactions,
especially where mothers have
been diagnosed with postnatal

illness. In addition, Suzanne
Zeedyk (2007) states that regular
positive touch and infant
massage can help with cognitive
and brain development.
Back massage is
extremely soothingThese significant benefits can be
experienced not only by a
healthy full-term baby, but by
babies with some form of special
need or disability.
Many Portage service
professionals and health
professionals working with
parents whose infant has a
special need, undertake infant
massage teacher training
because they recognise how
valuable this service can be.
When infant massage is
taught sensitively and
professionally to parents, it offers
them a non-stigmatising,
inclusive, and empowering
environment in which to learn a
new skill. This will enable them
to communicate with their infant,
understand their body and feel
positive that what they are doing
is not only safe, but will help their
baby. It is paramount that a non-
directive teaching style is
adopted ensuring that the
teacher is hugely respectful of
the parent and the infant, so that
the experience is a positive one
for all.
Commonly, infant massage is
taught in a group setting so that
parents can not only learn the
skill, but form friendships and
network with each other. It is
particularly useful for those
parents who feel isolated or for
mothers suffering from
depression. However, it is
recognised that working with
groups of Portage parents may
prove difficult due to the need for
numerous hospital/clinic
appointments and often parents
may not be able to attend a
regular course. However, this
does not preclude them from
attending a one-to-one course
with a teacher so that the
programme can be tailored to
their individual needs - it just
takes a little thought.
Each condition will be different
and will require the teacher to
consider adaptations to the
standard strokes and positioning
to accommodate specific medical
needs. For instance a baby with
a gastrostomy (Tipping, 2009) or
an umbilical hernia (Epple, 2009)
may find it difficult to lie in the
prone position for a back
massage, but suitable
adaptations can be made to
perform the back strokes without
causing discomfort.

Lots of infants with special needs
(such as Cerebral Palsy) have
sensory issues and it is
important when teaching parents
to massage their infant that the
strokes should be quite firm as
otherwise they may tickle and
over-stimulate the baby. Perhaps
starting with a very few strokes
each session, building baby's
tolerance, until the point when
they are happy to receive a full
massage. Regular massage can
strengthen the immune system
and studies show that some
premature infants who receive
positive touch from their parents
in hospital show greater physical
and neurological improvement
over those who are not
massaged and they also
generally gain weight more
rapidly, reducing their stay in a
special care unit (Scafadi, 1990)

Baby Massage is a wonderful way for parents to use
positive touch. This gives the opportunity for special time
together; incorporating not only the massage but also
therapeutic hugs and holds, and fun with nursery rhymes
and music. Baby massage is also a fantastic way for
parents to learn how their baby communicates with them,
enabling parents to understand what their baby wants
and to comfort them with loving touch.
Baby massage is so
versatile it can be done
almost anywhere!Infant massage can also help
those families whose babies are
terminally ill. This can improve
the quality of the remainder of
everyday life for the child and
enable the parents to remain in
touch with their child and
communicate their loving feelings
(Hubbard, 2002).
Infant massage can be used
with infants with many
disabilities; however, the parent
is always asked to check with the
baby's physicians to ensure that
there are no contraindications
arising from a particular condition
with regards to massage (Epple,
2009).
As a teacher and trainer of
infant massage to health
professionals I am convinced
that as well as the above,
massage can offer so much
more for an infant with a
disability and their family, giving
increased confidence and
providing respite from constant
trips to appointments. This is
supported by Portage Co-
ordinator Janet Robinson
(Robinson, 2008) who wrote:
For one mum whose son
was very disabled it made
such a huge difference she
wrote on her evaluation: "I
feel J loves it and it makes
me feel very close to him."
The massage had such an
impact that J was meeting
his Portage targets through
his massage sessions! CG

and physical health benefits that
come from touch.
From this frontier of touch
research, studies by
neuroscientist Edmund Rolls
show that touch activates the
brain’s cortex which is linked to
feelings of reward and
compassion. It signals safety and
trust.
Basic warm touch calms
cardiovascular stress. It activates
the body’s vagus nerve, which is
intimately involved with our
compassionate response, and a
simple touch can trigger release
of oxytocin, aka ‘the love
hormone’.
‘Touch therapy’ or ‘massage
therapy’ has got hard science on
its side. It’s not just good for our
muscles; it’s good for our entire
physical and mental health.
Stroking the skin activates
nerves that calm down the
body's stress response and
stimulate the brain's happy
hormones. The more you're
stroked, the more your blood
pressure is reduced, pain
vanishes and pleasure takes its
place.
Tiffany Field, director of the
Touch Research Institute at the
University of Miami Medical
School, points out that massage
can reduce inflammation which
may be involved in pain and
actually enhance cell recovery.
What I find interesting and
more expansive is the wonderful
tool that massage gives us for
everyday life. Massage
techniques can be taught so
people with families can learn to
massage each other, parents
can massage kids, couples can
massage each other, so flooding
their bodies with anti-stress
hormones that are beneficial for
better health and wellbeing.
There are plenty of ways you
can put touch to work for your
good health. Massage therapy,
for instance, may make you
more alert and lessen symptoms
of depression such as fatigue
and irritability. The healing power
of touch extends across our life
span, from helping babies grow
and children concentrate at
school to decreasing chronic
illnesses and disease.
Bodywork and relaxation go
together, an hour-long bodywork
session… even one focused on
pain relief or structural alignment
can create a sense of well-being,
calm, and energy. But why do we
as human beings crave the touch
of another?
Whether in giving or receiving,
touch is as essential to human
survival as is food. Infants
deprived of touch, even when
they are getting adequate
nutrition, will fail to thrive. Elders
isolated by loss of partners and
friends become depressed not
only because of the absence of
social interaction, but also
because of the simple loss of
being touched.
Touch is the only one of our
five senses that doesn't lose its
potency with age. As we grow
old, our need to touch and be
touched becomes greater. But
we don't need any external aids
to get joy from our sense of
touch. It doesn't diminish.
We forget that touch is not
only basic to our species, but the
key to it. In the absence of
touching and being touched,
people of all ages can sicken
and grow touch-starved.
And, as we age, we need
more assurance that we are
loved. If the restrictions of our
culture frown on touching,
holding hands, hugging and
kissing, we have to ignore them.
We have to learn to give each
other joy through touch, the most
important of our senses.CG

Meditationthe stress solutionDo you know what Richard Gere, Madonna, Clint
Eastwood, Russell Brand, Lulu, and Sir Paul
McCartney have in common? As well as being
extremely famous they have all spoken about
how a daily meditation practice has made a huge
difference to their lives.
Russell Brand saidrecently: ‘Meditation hasbeen incredibly valuable
to me both in my recovery as adrug addict and in my personallife, my marriage, jmyprofessional life. I literally had anidea drop into my head the otherday while I was meditating whichI think is worth millions of dollars’The New York Times, April 10th2011.
So, what can meditation dofor you?Meditation has many benefits
and once you have begun topractise regularly you willdiscover that you begin to sleepmuch better. Regular meditatorssleep more soundly becausethey are able to relax and let goof the stress and tension of theday much more easily.People who meditate cope
much better with the stress ofdaily life because they are ableto focus their attention and stopbeing controlled by anxiousthoughts. Stress is a majorproblem in most people’s livesand one way to address this is tolearn how to calm the mind. Research into the many
benefits of meditation began withDr Herbert Benson of HarvardUniversity in the 1970s and hascontinued with the work of,among others, Jon Kabat-Zinn,Professor of Medicine Emeritusand founding director of theStress Reduction Clinic and theCenter for Mindfulness at the

University of Massachusetts.Their research has shown thatregular practice helps reducestress, lower blood pressure andhelp boost the immune system. Many doctors are now
recommending that their patientsfind a meditation class ratherthan taking prescriptionmedication – ‘meditation asmedication’ as my GP calls it. Developing a regular practice
can help people to give upharmful addictions as we haveseen with Russell Brand. Manypeople have been able to giveup their dependence on drugs, alcohol, smoking and over-eatingbecause meditation helps you tofeel calmer and more in control. It can even help you to lookyounger: regular meditators canlook up to ten years youngerthan their actual age. Manypeople are surprised when I tell
them my age because they thinkI look ten years younger. Anothergreat reason to start is thegrowing evidence that it can alsohelp you to lose weight. DavidServan-Shreiber, the Founder ofthe Centre for IntegrativeMedicine at the University ofPittsburgh, explains that learningto breathe correctly helps torelease cortisol – the stresshormone – from the body andthis in turn helps us to loseweight, especially around thestomach. Learning to meditatetakes the weight off your mindand so it becomes easier to losebody weight. Last year I published my book
on meditation, which begins withthe story of how meditationrescued me from dependence onalcohol. A chance meeting ledme to develop a meditationpractice and it transformed my
life. I gradually became calmerand far less reliant on alcohol. Ihave the occasional drink but nolonger rely on it as I did before Ilearnt to meditate.Learning to meditate had such
a powerful effect on me that Ibegan to explore how I couldhelp others learn. CG

me that even persistent, debilitating pain could bereversed once the individualaccepted that the underlyingcause wasn’t physical, butemotional, and this was thenaddressed. for years until I was put in thisposition five years ago aftercoming across the pioneeringwork of John E Sarno MD,Professor of RehabilitationMedicine at the New YorkUniversity School of Medicine. Simply put, the concept Dr
Sarno proposes is that becausewe have a tendency to bottle uphow we feel, over time this buildsup and symptoms provide anescape mechanism when thereis no other outlet. This is causedby stimulation of the autonomicnervous system when surfacingemotions activate the emotionalbrain and trigger symptoms, usually as a maladapted ‘fightand flight’ response. Symptomscan range from musculoskeletalpain, migraines, RSI, anxiety, depression, bowel problems etc.Unfortunately, although the
concept that to have a healthybody requires a healthy mind hasbeen advocated by philosophersfor centuries, it has been lostmore recently as science hasfocused on the physical aspectof disease, based on the medicalmodel. Many women are unconcerned about having
irregular cycles until they begin trying for a baby,
but other women find it very difficult to plan
without knowing when their periods could
appear.
What is regular?Irregular periods aresimply those that are
not regular. If a woman suffersfrom irregular periods, she willnot know when her period isgoing to happen. Cycles canvary from 23 to 35 days, but theyare classed as regular if theyoccur at roughly the same timeeach cycle. So, even if awoman's periods are, say, 35days apart instead of the usual28, but they always appear atday 35, they would be classifiedas being 'normal'. Irregularperiods can be extremely difficultor even impossible to track. Minor or occasional cycle
irregularities are common formost women, because dieting, travel, stress, exercise and
corticosteroids or drugs used forcancer treatment.
Irregular periods and stress When a woman is under physicalor emotional stress, her bodycan release the hormoneprolactin that interferes withovulation. This is nature's way ofsaving her from a pregnancywhen she would find it hard tocope; if she is under severestress, perhaps throughbereavement or divorce, herperiods may stop altogether. She should visit her doctor to
allow him or her to rule out anyphysical causes of menstrualirregularities - and if there is nophysical cause, she should takeit as a clear warning sign thatshe needs to take time out torelax. The nutritional approach is
designed to encourage awoman's body to re-establishregular ovulation and to gethormones back in balance. Shewill also need help to assess thedifferent stresses in her life, to
seasonal changes can all cometo bear on the menstrual cycle. It's perfectly normal to haveerratic cycles on the run-up tomenopause too. However, if awoman experiences irregularmenstrual patterns for more thanthree cycles in a row, I wouldstrongly urge her to follow all theadvice in this article to try torestore some balance, but alsoto visit her doctor. He or she willbe able to rule out any medicalcause, such as polycystic ovarysyndrome, a build-up of thewomb lining (endometrialhyperplasia), fibroids or a wombinfection. In rare cases, irregularperiods can be a symptom ofendometrial or cervical cancer, and they may also be caused bycertain medications, such as

see what can be changed and tofind different ways to cope.
Dietary changesThe emphasis must be on agood healthy diet and payingparticular attention tophytoestrogens, such asflaxseeds, lentils and soya, whichhelp control levels of excessoestrogen and to fibre, whichoptimises the transportation ofwaste products (including oldoestrogens) out of the system, and on reducing the intake ofsaturated fat, which raises levelsof oestrogen in the body.Research has shown that
giving women ground linseedsevery day increases theregularity of the cycle andimproves ovulation. A woman's weight is crucial for
maintaining regular cycles - andbeing overweight is as much a
problem as being underweight.Balance is the key here. If awoman crash diets or becomesanorexic, her periods may notstop completely, but they canbecome irregular. Beingoverweight can also preventovulation, and she can sufferfrom irregular periods.
SupplementsThe supplements outlined beloware designed to ensure that awoman is well nourished, or inother words, that her body hasall the nutrients it needs. Certainsupplements are also included tohelp her deal with stress, and asa protective measure to preventcells from undergoing anyinappropriate changes.
B vitaminsThese are often called the'stress' vitamins because they
can help a woman to cope withthe pressures of everyday life. Asstress can be such an importantfactor in causing irregular periodsit is important that she has somehelp in dealing with it. VitaminsB2, B3 and B6 are alsonecessary for thyroid hormoneproduction and B5 (pantothenicacid) is essential for optimumadrenal function. Bothimbalances in thyroid functionand stress can affect the cycle. The easiest way to make sure
of getting a good supply of thesevitamins is to take them in theform of a good B-complexsupplement. B vitamins aresynergistic, which means thatthey work together.
AntioxidantsAntioxidants are particularlyrelevant for irregular periods. It isbelieved that antioxidants have

the ability to prevent cells frommutating. In other words, theyprevent cells from becoming'abnormal'. This is extremelyimportant if a woman has beendiagnosed with endometrialhyperplasia. Antioxidants includevitamins A, C and E and theminerals zinc and selenium.
MagnesiumThis mineral has been classedas 'nature's tranquilliser', so it isan essential inclusion in the dietof anyone suffering from irregularperiods. In fact, anyone intoday's hectic society will benefitfrom a magnesium supplement.Stress is often a factor in periodirregularity, and this mineral willhelp to redress the balance of astressful lifestyle.
Omega 3 fatty acids There are many factors that arenow known to affect the wayessential fatty acids are used bythe body, including highadrenaline levels (in the case ofstress), high alcoholconsumption, and low levels ofcertain nutrients like vitamin B6and magnesium. If the body isnot getting or able to use enoughof the fatty acids consumed, thecycle can be affected.

HerbsHerbs have a long tradition ofnormalising irregular periods. Two herbs in particular areextremely useful for balancingthe cycle and they can be usedeffectively together:
Agnus castus
(Vitex/Chastetree berry) This herb stimulates andnormalises the function of thepituitary gland which, in turn, helps to balance hormone outputfrom the ovaries and to stimulateovulation. Agnus castus is alsouseful when there is an excessof prolactin which can suppressovulation. Furthermore, it hasbeen shown to reduceendometrial hyperplasia and canbe used on a preventative basis.
False Unicorn Root(Chamaelirium luteum)This is an excellent herb forregulating periods. It acts as atonic to strengthen thereproductive system. It worksacross the whole cycle to ensurethat balance is maintained, butits biggest impact is on the firsthalf of the cycle, when it acts toregulate the action of theovaries. As well as using herbs to help
normalise the cycle, they canalso be used to help controlstress, which may be affectingthe cycle. Herbs that are usedspecifically to cope with stressare known as 'nervines', andthey act on the nervous systemto relieve anxiety, tension andirritability. One of the best known
nervines is valerian (Valerianaofficinalis). It is most effectivewhen combined with anotherherb, skullcap (Scutellarialateriflora, which acts both torelax and tonify the nervoussystem.
Other Factors
ExerciseExercise is great for overallhealth, and encourages thehealth of the heart andcirculatory system. However, when taken to an extreme, exercise can cause periods tobecome irregular and even stop.Check to see whether exerciselevels are appropriate.
AlcoholAlcohol should be eliminatedcompletely for approximatelythree months as it compromisesthe efficient functioning of theliver which deactivates oestrogenand helps to excrete it properly.
StressEliminate any foods or drinksthat can increase the productionof the stress hormones, e.g.added sugar, refinedcarbohydrates, caffeine.Massage is recommended alongwith relaxation techniques.
Natural MedicineBoth homeopathy andacupuncture can be verysuccessful in the treatment ofirregular periods and they can beused alongside the otherrecommendations. CG
