Famous Family TreesBy Kari HaugeIllustrated by Vivien Mildenberger
Elizabeth I was Queen of England more than four hundred years ago. She ruled for 45 years, in what was seen as a golden age in English history. All of England’s Kings and Queens are related, but Elizabeth was the last member of the Tudor family. Under Elizabeth, England became a major sea-faring nation with men such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh exploring new lands and bringing back treasure. Music and literature became important in people’s lives, with playwrights including William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, and composers such as Thomas Tallis and William Byrd.
NO HAND IN MARRIAGE
Elizabeth refused all attempts to persuade her to get married. Marriage might have meant she had children to inherit her crown. But it might also have made it harder for her to make her own decisions in an age where women were unrightly seen as inferior to men.… even queens.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
Elizabeth had elaborate taste in clothes – it took her serving women four hours per day to dress and undress her. She initially wore wigs that matched her hair colour and applied heavy make-up to mask the hair loss and scarring she suffered due to a case of smallpox.
THE TUDOR ROSE
The Tudor rose was created when Henry VII brought an
end to the Wars of the Roses. He joined the White Rose of York with the Red Rose of
Lancaster, creating the Union Rose (or Tudor Rose), which is still used as the fl oral emblem
of England today.
CLAIM TO THE THRONE
The Tudors were of Welsh ancestry and played a lead role in the struggle to end
English rule in Wales. When Henry defeated Richard
III at the battle of Bosworth in 1485, the vast majority of his subjects saw him as a
usurper – and they were right.
The House of Tudor had fi ve monarchs, or rulers, who reigned for 118 years. Their reign saw the end of the Wars of the
Roses, and the change from a Catholic country to a Protestant one.
There were other claimants with stronger links to the throne but
Henry was the clear victor on the battlefi eld.
1486–1502Arthur’s birth was seen as the union of two houses,
Tudor and York.

The gossamer-winged butterflies are the second largest butterfly family, containing up to 5,000 species.
This family is made up of the coppers, blues and hairstreaks subfamilies. Spot these little butterflies by looking at the black and white stripes on their antennae. They often have metallic, shimmering wings. Many of the species are very rare. The caterpillars of this family tend to munch on pea plants, trees and shrubs. Some of the caterpillars in this family depend on ants for protection from predators. In return for this protection, the caterpillars produce a sugary syrup for the ants as a reward.
Watch the male and female summer azures flutter by to land on swamp dogwood flowers. With a delicate dusting of soft blue scales, they beat their wings and take to the skies once more.

and what happens when people get old. A celebration of human life, from birth to death, by Mary Hoffman and Ros Asquith, creators of the bestselling Great Big Book of Feelings.
SEAGOING GIANTSeawater crocodiles are the world’s largest living reptiles. They live in rivers, marshes and estuaries close to the ocean, occasionally swimming far out to sea and travelling hundreds of kilometres with
the aid of ocean currents. Their huge size makes them a threat to many other animals sharing the water, including fish (even sharks!), birds, mammals and humans.
DID YOU KNOW?/ Crocodiles are quite noisy. Adults make growling and hissing sounds and babies call from their eggs when they are ready to hatch.
/ The largest saltwater crocodiles may have measured 7 metres long and weighed 2,000kg, but no crocodile this large has been seen recently.
/ A crocodile brain is tiny! I t is between 0.1 and 0.05% the weight of its body. A human brain is about 2% of bodyweight.
/ A saltwater crocodile can bite with a force of 16,400 Newtons, about 25 times harder than an average human. Snap!

Crocodiles differ from alligators in snout shape, arrangement of teeth and having a tiny sense organ on
every scale of the body. They are powerful swimmers and are able to leap from water with spectacular speed when attacking, using their tail for propulsion. On land they
can gallop short distances, but contrary to popular myth, not fast enough to catch a running human.

Young children are very sensitive to fairness. They
will immediately notice if someone is getting more
than them in terms of sweets, presents, time with a
carer, and so on.
All these differences call for them to state with
contempt, “It’s not fair.”
It’s hard for young ones to comprehend having
‘less’ or ‘more’ without feeling hard done by or
triumphant, both of which are troubling. Take a
matter-of-fact approach. Discuss all of the many ways
they have more and less than their friends – more hair,
a smaller car, a bigger bed, more puzzles etc. Make it
fun to talk about difference, so that difference in itself
isn’t a problem. It just is a part of life. Validate that you
would like more of some things, too (and possibly
less of others!).
Connect your child to the things your family
values: fun time together over material possessions:
being generous and charitable to those less fortunate,
gratitude for what we have.
Abby had invited Olivia round to play. Olivia had brought a new toy with her – a little horse, which she was very proud of. But when she
got to Abby’s house, she saw that Abby had been given a huge pony for her birthday! Olivia thought Abby’s toy looked much better than hers.
On the way home, Olivia said, “Dad, Abby has much bigger toys than me.”“Well, Abby has more in some ways, and you have more in other ways,”
replied her dad. Abby asked,“Why do some people have more than others?”
How is Olivia feeling?
What would it be like to have everything you wanted?
What are the things you really like that don’t cost money?
“Why do some people have more than others?”
| 31 || 30 |
“Why are you always being mean about Daddy?”
Olivia had gone to visit her mum. “Well, it is a shame that you are late, but I guess I shouldn’t be sur-
prised. Your father was always late,” said her mum. Then she went upstairs and told Olivia to come and unpack. But when she opened up Olivia’s case, her mum got cross again. “Look at these clothes! Nothing is folded properly and it’s all wrinkled and creased. I suppose he thinks I should still do all the ironing! And another thing—”
But Olivia didn’t want to hear any more cross words from her mum, and asked,
“Why are you always being mean about Daddy?”
What do you think Olivia’s mum is saying to her?
Is it ever okay to say mean things?
What are some ways we can talk about
worries and problems without being mean?
This is a wake-up call! There are lots of reasons you
may want to talk badly about Dad – or Mum. Being
divorced will bring a lot of complex emotions and
situations to deal with. However, these must not be
seen by your child.
Put all your energy into being civil and caring
with each other. Research shows that children suffer
most when their parents are fighting. Make sure you
don’t speak about your partner to anyone within
earshot of your child: they will hear it. Don’t ask your
child to take sides – even subtly. It is natural to have
many strong emotions of your own, but if you need
support, seek another adult or therapist.
