To our members and friends

We wish you a happy and prosperous new year and welcome you to our second musical of the season, and our first show of the new decade!

We are especially proud to present the regional premiere of Side Show. Although Broadway did not treat the show kindly, it has had several highly successful productions around the country, and has become a sleeper classic. I know you will enjoy the outstanding music -- don’t forget to breathe during “I Will Never Leave You” and “Who Will Love Me as I Am?” Jason Fortner and Rodney Carpenter have combined with our talented cast to present a truly memorable and outstanding production.

We hope that you enjoy our new look in the lobby. A lot of people gave generously of their time and money to achieve what I think is a stunning result. I am particularly grateful to Patti Baldwin and the First Nighters for sponsoring the project; to John Del Vitto for not only creating a design which invites and intrigues, but also for rolling up his sleeves and doing a huge amount of the work; and to Cherie Albury for her tireless dedication to the project. I had the opportunity to work alongside John for a couple of days, and was delighted by his unfailing good humor, his positive attitude to life and his unstinted willingness to give of himself. Without Cherie, this project could not have come together. You will find her contributions everywhere – in the upholstery, the painting and a myriad of other places. About sixty other folks also deserve a special thank you for their efforts and cash – look for their names in this playbill.

Although we have four more shows to stage in this season, we are already at work preparing for our summer camps and, of course, the great shows we are planning for next season. We have an outstanding line-up, so season members, please watch your mail!

About our play Side Show is about Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined twins who make a change from being a circus side show act to becoming famous vaudeville performers in the 1930s. The musical tells the story of their search for success and love as our outstanding cast sings and dances their way through the highs and lows of the twins’ career. This show was nominated for four Tony awards, and since running on Broadway for three months in 1997 has become an extremely popular show wherever performed. We are truly fortunate that Jason Fortner offered to bring this outstanding musical to our stage.

Daisy and Violet were real life characters, born in England in 1908, and Bill Russell and Henry Kreiger have combined in a haunting telling of the story of their lives and their emotional ups and downs. You will enjoy songs like the toe-tapping numbers We Share Everything and The Devil You Know and you will be haunted by the sheer beauty of Who Will Love Me As I Am and I Will Never Leave You. This show is a rare treat. Enjoy!

Meet the Directors and Crew Jason Fortner (Director/Choreographer) has directed many musicals here at the Playhouse, starting back with our very first musical Very Good Eddie. Since then he has directed such FWP productions as Good News, Babes In Toyland, Dracula The Musical, Naughty Marietta, Rose Marie, She Loves Me, Meet Me In St Louis, La Cage Aux Folles, How To Succeed…, Of Thee I Sing, Bells Are Ringing, The Full Monty and others. On stage he directed and played the title role in our production of Barnum. Thanks to all who have supported him in local theatre

these past 35 years. Rodney Carpenter (Musical Director) is very excited to join the Francis Wilson Playhouse family! Rodney attended West Virginia University as a vocal performance major. His musical direction experience includes productions of Cats, Les Miserables, and Leader of the Pack. Rodney would like to thank Jason, Dianna, Ka-Rim and Janet for making this show so great to work with!

Janet Tucker (Stage Manager) is so glad to be back at Francis Wilson and with Jason again! Thanks to him, she discovered the theater world 13 years ago and quickly decided that the “real show” is backstage and has been fortunate enough to stage manage many, many wonderful shows in Community Theater over the years. Meet the Side Show Cast

Elliott Alexander (Ensemble) is appearing in his second production at the Playhouse, most recently in A Christmas Carol. He played Max in The Sound of Music in his senior year of high school. He is training to become a professional actor.

Charles J. Atkinson, Jr. (Ensemble) is very happy to be back at the Playhouse, last appearing as Butch in Leading Ladies. He has also performed in Fiddler On The Roof, Li’l Abner and Annie Get Your Gun in his home town of Windsor, CT; and Awake and Sing, Zebras and Plaza Suite for Avenue Players. When not performing he enjoys oil painting. He would like to thank all those that support him in his acting and to the cast and crew for making it a pleasure to work with them. Hope you enjoy

Matt Barnes (Ensemble) most recently appeared at the Playhouse as Tommy in Annie Get Your Gun. He has been in many shows here including Bells Are Ringing and The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker. He feels blessed to have JFT as a director! He also wants to send out some love to ‘my CAB’.

Jessica Bishop (Ensemble) was last seen onstage at the Playhouse as Audrey in Leading Ladies. She is very excited to be back in such a fantastic show. Previous credits include Lina Lamonte in Singin’ in the Rain (EOT), Lettie in Something’s Afoot (FWP), and Texas in Cabaret (EOT). Thank you Jason, Rodney and Janet for making us look so good. But most of all thanks to my awesome fiancé, who finally agreed to do a show with me! Love you, Michael!

Colleen Boylan (Ensemble) is happy to returning to the Playhouse after performing in Annie GetYour Gun. Some favorite shows include: The Glass Menagerie (Laura) at WCP, Fiddler On The Roof (Fruma Sarah) at TSPAC, Six Guns & Sasparilla (Myrna) at EOT, La Cage Aux Folles (Paulette) at FWP, and You Can't Take It With You (Essie) at EOT. Thanks to Jason, Rodney, Janet and B.B.! Margaret Boylan (Ensemble) is back again and with such a talented cast. Thanks to Jason, Rodney and Janet for allowing me to join the Side Show. Lauren Clark (Violet Hilton) is very excited to be working side by side with this freakish group of actors. Cranstan Cumberbatch (Jake) is very excited to be performing at the Playhouse along with his fellow cast mates. Cranstan has been in several plays including Guys and Dolls and The Pajama Game. Having an avid love for acting and music, Cranstan has performed on many stages all over the country and is currently working on completing his second R&B album and short film called Troubled Man in which he plays the lead role of Derrick Baxter. Charlie Deppish (The Boss) is celebrating 25 years working as an actor. His career has included stage and TV with some amazing actors and technicians. He has performed in everything from Sondheim to Shakespeare. He was just seen as The Padre in Salerno Theatre’s Man of La Mancha. His television credits include guest starring roles on In The Heat of The Night and Homicide: Life on the Street. He is very excited about this show and this character.

Chrissy Dobrowski (Daisy Hilton) is so excited to be making her Playhouse debut in a show that she has loved for so many years. Chrissy is a four time LARY award winner, and was last seen as Sally Bowles in EOT’s production of Cabaret. Thanks to the directors and cast for their dedication, and much love to Joey for continuing the magic ten years later for Booze and Betsy. Cengiz Dokumaci (Ensemble) is glad to be back at the Playhouse. He was previously seen in High Society (Stanley), Sweet Charity (Charlie), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Bun-Foo), Bells are Ringing (Carol), La Cage Aux Folles (Jacob), The Man Who Came to Dinner (Ensemble) and Of Thee I Sing (Ensemble). Kris Doubles (Ensemble) Side Show is Kris' debut at the Playhouse. He is honored to be amongst such a multi-talented cast, crew and production team. Thank you Jason Fortner! Kris has been cast in several incredible roles over the past five years throughout Tampa Bay. Performing as "The Geek" in this incredible production marks his eighteenth, and certainly one of the top, most wonderfully challenging roles to date. For this opportunity, he thanks Rodney and Janet for their talent and

direction. He dedicates this performance to his biggest "FREAK" fan, Jim.

Tim Foster (Terry) Mild mannered psychologist by day, (with an office in Tarpon Springs), by night Tim loves to sing. Three time Lary Award nominee, he is delighted to be back at the Playhouse after several years absence, performing in several Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas. Tim says thanks to his new wife, Wendy, and to the cast, Jason and leadership team.

Katy Gaudet (The Bearded Lady) is happy to be back at the Playhouse. Her last role here was Mrs. Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Recent roles include Queen Aggravian in Once Upon a Mattress, Dora Bailey in Singin’ in the Rain and Mae in Pajama Game. Thanks to Dave for his love and support.

Erin Hamilton-Mullin (Ensemble) was last on the Playhouse stage in Annie Get Your Gun and in the Hits From The Flops Concert. She recently appeared with ICT in Crimes of the Heart (Lary award), The Graduate, and Rocky Horror. Erin holds a music theatre degree from FSU, a law degree from Stetson Law and is getting her master’s degree at USF. Hopefully, she’ll appear in more shows once she finishes her master’s this summer. Thanks to Jason and Rodney for working around my school schedule.

Jonathan Hecht (Ensemble) was born and raised in Seminole, Florida. Jonathan has attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from the University of Florida. Currently he is attending the University of South Florida for Electrical Engineering. This is his third production at the Playhouse having recently appeared in Leading Ladies and Annie Get Your Gun.

George Kolitsas (Ensemble) feels blessed to be a part of this wonderful production. He recently was seen in Annie Get Your Gun (Mr. Wilson and Chief Running Bear). Melissa Labiak (Harem Girl) is excited to be returning to the Playhouse. Her past roles include Can-Can Girl/Dance Captain in Annie Get Your Gun, Mary Jane Wilkes/ Choreographer in Big River, Louise Bigelow/Dance Captain in Carousel, and Lucinda Matlock in Spoon River Anthology. She is an instructor at Expressions Academy of Dance and a member of the United States Figure Skating Association. She would like to thank Jason, Rodney, her friends, and family for their

Ellen O’Connell (Ensemble) is currently studying voice performance at USF under the tutelage of Dr. Warren Jaworski. She has been involved in productions since age six, including Guys and Dolls as General Cartwright, The Sound of Music as Mother Abbess, and Mrs. Harcourt in Anything Goes. She is forever grateful to her parents for putting her through piano and voice lessons, her wonderful boyfriend Rob, for encouraging her and believing in her, and the cast of Side Show for being

awesome!

Lisa Victoria Ohlemann (Harem Girl) is appearing in her second show at the Playhouse. Previously she has enjoyed being part of Annie Get Your Gun. Other plays she has gained experience from are The Apple Tree and The Importance of Being Ernest as Cecily Cardew. She wants to thank her boyfriend Matt and her family for giving her lovely support throughout and Jason for giving her an opportunity to be in the show and to grow as a performer. Jason Osorio (Ensemble) is very happy to be back at the Playhouse, and he’s truly delighted to a part of the Side Show experience. For his fourth show at Francis Wilson, and his third with the incorrigible Jason Fortner directing, this has been quite a treat. Jason would like to thank the cast and crew of this show for making this worthwhile and he hopes you enjoy the show!

Rick Osorio (Ensemble) is a longtime resident of Clearwater, and excited to be in this production, especially with his son Jason. He is married, and has a daughter, Nikki, who is an accomplished dancer and actress herself. This is Rick’s third production at the Playhouse, his latest being a French banker in A Shot in the Dark. He thanks his family and friends for their support and the cast for the opportunity to work with them.

Christian Emmanuel Pici (Ensemble) was in Annie Get Your Gun back in November and in Once Upon A Mattress with City Players in the summer. Christian is one of eight kids and got into theatre by his sister. 2005-2007 Christian performed the opening number for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with Camp Broadway. I would like to thank my sister, my parents, friends, and my dance teacher for their great support. Rafi Rodriguez (Ensemble) is back at the Playhouse! Latest efforts include Mame, Ragtime, Pajama Game, Kiss Me, Kate, Dearly Departed, Twelfth Night, Richard III, Leading Ladies, and Maria’s Song. Rafi grew up in stage, film, television, and recording studios in Puerto Rico as a member of La Tuna de Cayey, a 45 year legacy and the group is still going strong! Thank you, Jason! Mary Lee Ross (Ensemble) Recent credits here include Something’s Afoot (Miss Tweed) and By Gershwin!, SPLT’s The Diary of Anne Frank (Mrs. Van Daan), Broadway Bound (Blanche), Red, Hot & Cole (Ethel Merman), The Wizard of Oz (Wicked Witch); WCP’s How the Other Half Loves (Mary Detweiler); TSPAC’s Fiddler on the Roof (Golde); Fresh! Joey Sarlo (Buddy Foster) is glad to be back at the Playhouse with this wonderful cast and group of friends. He was last seen here in A Grand Night for Singing. Favorite roles include Sparky (Forever Plaid), Pippin (Pippin), Jesus (Godspell) and Seymour (Little Shop of Horrors). He is most excited to finally be back on stage with his dear friend Chrissy after a long 10 year break (way too long, Areeshmu!). amazing grace in his life.

Comedy By Mary Chase

What can you say about the timeless story of Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend, Harvey, who just happens to be a six foot three and one half inch tall Pooka? I could tell you that the first run of this play on Broadway continued for 1,775 performances. Or that Mary Chase won a Pulitzer drama prize for it. Perhaps that James Stewart was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Elwood, and Josephine Hull won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her magnificent interpretation of Elwood’s sister, Veta. Stewart was beaten that year by Jose Ferrer for his role as Cyrano de Bergerac.

I should probably tell you that a Pooka is a creature from Celtic folklore, often characterized as a rabbit, known for giving advice and keeping humans from harm, when it is not confusing them. It even has its own day – November 1st – and on that day is guaranteed to behave itself.

There have been revivals, movies and adaptations by the score. This show is a perennial favorite with family audiences everywhere. It has been translated into dozens of languages, and delights everyone who sees it.

Probably the best thing I could say about Harvey would be to quote from Elwood P. Dowd’s ‘Philosophy’ of life: Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" – she always called me Elwood -- "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

First Nighters Lobby Rejuvenation Project

It is not often one can share in the decorating of a theatre lobby that audiences have enjoyed for 80 years and will continue to enjoy for many years to come.

The First Nighters are a dedicated group of women who believe that a live theatre experience should be a very special occasion. Twice during each theatre season they hold a Gala Champagne Premier to benefit the Francis Wilson Playhouse.

In the past, the First Nighters with generous donations from those who come to see our shows and others raised funds that have resulted in a new and expanded air conditioning system, a new front curtain in red velvet, refurbishment of our rest rooms, lights for our dressing rooms and many other technical and aesthetic updates within our extensive building.

This year The First Nighters have celebrated the 80th Season of Francis Wilson Playhouse by pledging their fundraising toward re-decorating the Playhouse Lobby.

Concert Series

BROADWAY VALENTINES

February 13, 2010 – 2pm & 8pm

A musical look at love and romance, as seen through the eyes of Broadway's greatest songwriters. From unrequited love to first dates and on through the many sides of love, this concert explores the "heart" of Broadway with romance and comedy. Songwriters represented include Jerry Herman, Leroy Anderson, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Lerner & Loewe, Rodgers & Hart, Dorothy Fields and many more!

Showdown Performing Arts will be returning this summer with their totally unique theater camp designed with and for teens. Flip Kobler, Cindy Marcus, Dennis Poore, Micky Bronson and Domenic Bisesti will return to Francis Wilson Playhouse from July 12, 2010 (Orientation) through July 31, 2010. We’ve been overwhelmed with last years kids asking and kids they have told about it asking when they will be back.

A normal schedule:

Mornings are devoted to classes. Students can choose from Acting, Directing, Playwriting, Composing, Stage Movement, Dance, Musical Theater, Stage Craft and Technical Theater. They go to three one-hour classes a day, taught by professionals who actually make their living in the entertainment industry.

Supportive adult mentoring relationships nurture trust in authority figures.

First rate original productions build their self-confidence, sense of achievement, and a passion for reading, especially the classics.

Students get hands on experience in all aspects of theater. They help design and build the sets. They help design and construct costumes. They learn to hang lights and design a lighting scheme. They design and run the sound. They stage manage. They manage the front of the house. Playwriting students have the option to write the shows for upcoming seasons.

After lunch it's into rehearsals of a full scale production that ends with performances before an audience.

Under the guidance of veteran composer Dennis Poore, students even get to write songs for the show.

High Quality performing arts classes geared toward teen issues give students a better understanding of who they are and why they matter, as well as help them discover their inner strengths and talents.

The camp emphasis is on original shows. This gives the students a chance to create something never before seen. They get a chance to breathe life into new characters, to design a set that relies on nothing but imagination.
