Xstatic Communications, a small PR/marketing agency, celebrates the holiday sea-son by hosting a toy drive for families in need for Christmas. On Dec. 1, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., at The Bottom Line Coffee House, patrons can come out to network and enjoy performances and drop off toys, new or gently used clothing and/or monetary dona-tions.

This event is open and free to all. All items and proceeds collected will directly ben-efit children in need and in jeopardy of going without for Christmas. While this is the fourth time Xstatic Communications is adopting a family for Christmas, this is its second consecutive year and it has high hopes to bless more families. “Last year we adopted one family; this year, we want to adopt several,” says Marketing Director DeJuan M. Vann.

While The Bottom Line Coffee House is participating in Noel Night, it decided to welcome the holiday cheer a bit earlier for the cause, “I am excited and this is such a great cause,” says Pat Harris, owner of The Bot-tom Line. Refreshments, including cold and hot bev-erages, soup, pastries and more will be available for purchase courtesy of The Bottom Line.

December 1st is World AIDS Day. Since 1988, the first day in December has been recognized as a day to bring people across the globe together in the battle against HIV/AIDS as

well as a day to remember the people who have passed away from the vicious disease. With more than 25 million people worldwide having died from the virus since 1981, AIDS is one of the most de-structive pandemics in history. Today the CDC estimates that more than one million people in the U.S. are living with HIVand 20 per-cent of those with the disease are unaware that they are infected. To bring even more public awareness to HIV/AIDS and increase fund-ing for AIDS services and research, the Red Ribbon was created in 1991 and is worn by people across the world to show their support.

For more information about World AIDS Day, donating or to purchase a Red Ribbon visit worldaidsday.org.

It wasn’t too difficult for Tim Bowman Jr. to find his way to music. His father, after all, is a noted jazz guitarist, meaning that developing musical skill was a requirement in the Bowman household. “When my dad was working out a new melody on his guitar, you had to be ready to back him up with the vocals,” laughs the Detroit native. When other kids were feverishly waiting for the moment they were free to race out of Sun-day service, Bowman would sit captivated in the church pews, enthralled with the choir and the soulful music that accompanied it. It wasn’t hard for him to identify what instrument he would use to express his love for the art: his voice could grab the congregation’s attention.

Beyond the church, the world first heard Bow-man when he scatted on gospel artist Vickie Wi-nans’ 2009 smash, How I Got Over. Today, the talented 24-year is no longer waiting for a chance to take the lead. This year Bowman released his Stellar Award-nominated debut album Beauti-ful, which entered in on the Billboard charts at No. 7. Since then he has been touring the country performing songs from the album.

Bowman’s sound can be described as pop-fused elec-tronica with tracks such as Throw It Away to pure gospel with the nostalgic Abide With Me Medley that was writ-ten by Marvin Winans. Deeper into the album, there’s the stirring rock anthem Healer, the infectious island beat of Looking For Love and the acoustic guitar-laced title track Beautiful. Family friend, Dorinda Clark Cole of the legendary Clark Sisters joins Bowman on the raw Sunday Morning while Vickie Winans jazzes up the mid-tempo He Will.

He Will is the forthcoming album’s first single. For the last eight months, it has climbed the charts at gospel radio and is laying the groundwork for what looks like a promising future for Bowman’s career. The song has peaked at No. 19 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart and No. 18 on the Mediabase Gospel chart and continues to make new believers out of radio programmers.

Bowman says in reflecting on the purpose in his mu-sic, “Each song should stand alone. Sometimes, you only have one chance for a person to hear and connect with your message. I want every person who listens to this al-bum to not only get that message but also to feel the fun I had making it.”

Bowman is inspired by a wide set of artists. “I like Coldplay, Kim Burrell, Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzger-ald,” he says. “The diversity is definitely what makes my music unique. If you listen closely you can hear that fu-sion of gospel, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and rock somewhere in each note.”

“As a kid, any new riff I’d hear, whether it was from an instrument or a jazz singer, I’d immediately try to get it down,” admits Bowman. Despite his knack for quick learning, he did not realize his talent. “Looking back, I don’t think I even knew the importance of what I was do-ing. I just wanted to sound cool.”

Bowman’s philosophy in life is rather easy, as the boy just likes to have fun. “It’s never that serious. Enjoy the life you’ve been blessed with. If it’s not fun or meaning-ful, move on,” he advises.

Off the stage and outside of the studio, the guitarist can jam somewhere else: in the kitchen. “If there are a few key ingredients in any fridge, I can make a meal out

of them. Everyone in my family loves my cooking. I don’t write any recipes down. I just go with what I’m feeling at the moment. I definitely have more wins than losses in the kitchen,” he boasts. “But when I’ve lost, I’ve really lost.”

When it comes to dressing the part, he’s a man that believes in a good suit. “There is something distin-guished about a tailored one. But I’m mostly rocking a pair of sneaks and a tee. People underestimate the value of simplicity.”

Bowman has just released his soulful spin of the clas-sic Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas for the holi-days. Accompanied by a full orchestra, it’s sure to give the right dose of Christmas spirit.

FrontPageDETROIT.comRelationship Advice

By Cornell C. Batie and Leslie J. Griffin

You’ve just met a terrific person and things are going extremely well. Phone calls are consistent and the compatibility couldn’t get any better. You enjoy each other’s company and can’t wait until the next time the two of you are together. There is just one thing. One person does not want to be in a committed relationship and you do. They have made this very clear to you but somehow you may be hearing something different because of how the two of you interact and carry on.

Even though they have expressed that they are not looking for anything serious at the moment, you still decide to engage in behaviors that denote exclusivity. These behaviors could be giving money, spending the night at each other’s home, engaging in sexual rela-tions and a plethora of other things. You have somehow rationalized in your mind that if you continue being nice to them they will ultimately change their mind and see how loving you are and won’t want to be without you.

Our entire mission with supporting couples has been centered on honesty, commu-nication, knowing what you want, knowing what works for you and what does not, and making your intentions very clear. We’re adding another piece to this and that is to simply believe what someone is telling you when it comes to them not wanting to be exclusive.

If they are verbally expressing their lack of interest to be in a committed relationship, then take them at face value. Understand that in most cases there is going to be very little to nothing you can do to get them to change their mind until they are ready. They may very well engage in activities with you but this is because they feel they have made their initial intentions very clear. So at this point you have been warned and if you agree to engage, then it is at your own risk.

Very often many of us bring stress into our lives with the decisions we make. Here are some ways to alleviate the heartache of unmet desires:

• Take responsibility for your own actions. Use your ability to make good deci-sions now so you don’t find yourself backtracking.

• Hear and accept what you are being told with regard to

SingLeS:Say what you mean -- and mean what you say

someone not wanting to be committed. We understand that their actions can be different than their confession in this case but do not let that hinder you in your deci-sion-making process.

• Understand that your nice actions are sometimes not enough to change someone’s desires and motivation toward you. Essentially you can go to the ends of the earth for someone you care about but if they are not ready to make that ultimate commitment you are wasting your time.

• Do not engage in physical and other exclusive activities with the hopes of becoming committed. Doing so is like placing furniture on the construction site of a home waiting to be built. Engaging in non-exclusive activities does not equate to exclu-sivity. Value yourself enough to wait for what it is you’re actually looking for.

We hope these tips help and welcome your feedback at [email protected]

Fans will say that Kem’s sultry style of soul music is a sweet enough gift for any occa-sion. Apparently, though, the homegrown favorite has more to give. His Christmas album, What Christmas Means, was released Oct. 16 and the artist sat down with FRONTPAGE Detroit to discuss what makes the project special and why fans will keep this one in heavy rotation for many seasons to come.

What made you want to record a Christ-mas album?

Kem: The idea came out of a meeting in Atlanta with my team. It’s been tossed up over the years by different people, including my manager, Toya Hankins. We were together and it started out as an idea about doing an EP, five songs to celebrate the season. We presented that to the label and they said fine. Then they came back around and said it would be better as an album. So I wrote five originals and the album has five covers.

Yours doesn’t sound like a traditional Christmas album. Instead it’s got an au-thentic Kem sound with a yuletide back-drop. How intentional was that?

Very intentional. I played it for Dave McMurray, who used to play with me and now plays with Kid Rock. And he said it perfectly. This is not a throwaway Christmas record. It’s top shelf and thought out, extremely high-quality. If we were talking about collard greens from your grandmama’s house, we’d be talking about her putting her foot in it. I put my foot in this record.

How did the writing and recording process compare to your soul records?

All the songs are co-written with (Detroit-area singer/songwriter) Melanie Rutherford. And my daughter Troi makes her writing debut on Glorify the King. There’s also a duet called Be Mine for Christmas, which reminds people so much of Billy Paul’s Me and Mrs. Jones that we had to get clearance. So that’s different because I usually write a majority of my stuff. But it was a condensed time. We decided in the spring to do a Christmas record and you gotta get it done by August. This was done in 90 days so I was going whenever the clock was visible. But it’s probably the most efficient record that I’ve recorded to date. It required an extreme amount of focus and it’s probably my best work to date.

What do you want your fans to get from this album?

I want my friends and fans to make me a part of their holiday tradition. I got my Christmas albums in the crate and in there is stuff like Nat King Cole. I remember those albums sit-ting around and I hope mine goes next to those.

What’s a Kem Christmas like?

I’ll have some caterers come over and set up shop. And I’ll have neighbors and friends come over and exchange gifts. For the last five years at least, that’s been going on at my house. We get the house ready the day before and bring stuff in the night before. And everybody comes and I get to see everybody. I guess it’s kind of selfish, how I bring everybody to me (laugh).
