Why does he give us all this...his name, word, Body and Blood? So that we become someone in whom Jesus can be found!!! I enjoy the many folks who come to Mass wearing a shirt, sweater, jacket, etc. that bears the name of the favorite sports team...lots of Bears, Blackhawks, Sox and Cubs. We even open our doors to those donning gear from the Packers and other out-of-town teams! For the most part, those who wear these things bring into church the enthusiasm they have for their favorite team. Is it possible for us to go from church out into the world publicly showing our enthusiasm for Jesus and

for our faith in him? It’s not difficult to come to St. Mary’s on most any day and find someone who publicly is a Sox or Bears fan. Is it easy in Plainfield to find people in most any place who can obviously be seen to be a joyful follower of Jesus?

Every day, Plainfield is full of people who have gone to mass at St. Mary Immaculate within the past seven days. Is it too much to expect that we would bring his presence with us into our daily lives and in our daily relationships and encounters with others? You don’t need a halo, you don’t need to have a degree in theology. You only need Jesus himself...and him you have—his name, his word, his Body and Blood, his grace, his mercy, his strength, his love. “All you need is love,” sang the Beatles long ago. Jesus tells us the same thing: “Love one another as I have loved you.” In fact, his idea of love is a lot better than that of the boys from Liverpool! In order to encourage his flock to be ready to help the needy they encounter daily, St. Gregory of Nazianzus admonished: “Do not wish to become an example of how God shows the strength of his arm against the proud, against those who pass by without taking care of the poor…” (On the Love for the Poor, 26-29). When others find Jesus in the love and mercy you share, you let them know where you have found him: at Mass, in the Sacraments, in a parish family of faith. Let them come to bear his Name, too, as well as hear his Word and receive his Body and Blood. As readily as we wear clothing that says something about us, how can we accept St. Paul’s invitation to “put on Christ”? In what ways can you make him more visible?

During holy times of the year (Lent, Easter, Christmas) it is not uncommon for programs with a religious theme to be aired on television. These weeks, CNN is running a strange series called “Finding Jesus”. This is a series of hour-long programs purporting to investigate artifacts that some say inform us about Jesus and his life on earth. The first program aired recently; it was about the Shroud of Turin. Other programs will be about legends of the True Cross (pieces of wood in different parts of the world said to be from the Cross of Jesus), a possible relic of John the Baptist, an ancient text that claims that Mary Magdalene was the wife of Jesus and still another one that makes Judas out to be the hero of the Apostles rather than the betrayer of the Lord, and an ossuary (burial box of bones) that claims (falsely, it turns out) to be those of a so-called brother of Jesus by the name of James. While I have a lot of confidence that the Turin Shroud is, indeed, the burial cloth of the Lord, most of the other programs don’t help people find Jesus at all. Rather, they give a lot of time to falsehoods that seek to undermine the truth of the Gospel and Catholic faith. So what else is new!?!? Funny, isn’t it, how the media is loathe to offer programs that support our faith but have no qualms whatsoever about giving air time or attention to those people and false claims that seek to undermine it? On the other hand, the title of the CNN series—Finding Jesus—does echo a burning desire in the hearts of many: they want to know with some certainty where they can find Jesus, to know that what we say about him in faith is actually true, to know that what he teaches is the truth, to know...him! If CNN is not the place to look, where can Jesus be found, where can people encounter the Lord in this world? In you, of course!!!! At our baptism we are given the Savior’s Name: Christian. As we grow, we are fed with the Lord’s words...words of life, words of truth, words of mercy, words of guidance, words of compassion and comfort. And then, there comes the time in our life when we begin to receive more than his Name and his Word; we receive his Body and Blood...we receive him! Is it still a holy thrill for you to receive him?

Reflections from Fr. David

People are looking for Jesus:

they won’t find him on CNN!

Olivewood Art from the Holy Land Bethlehem Gifts available March 14/15 and March 21/22

Bethlehem Gifts art work will be on sale in the Commons after all Masses on March 14/15 and March 21/22. The olivewood art is brought directly from Bethlehem, from artists and Christian families who make them and benefit from their distribution. Many are hand carved from one single piece of wood. Olivewood is known for being hard, with the most beautiful grains and natural colors. The tradition of Olivewood carving in the Holy land has been handed down from father to son since the 12th century.

Originally introduced by Crusaders, the craft has been perfected by centuries of local master carvers.

Stop by the Commons for beautiful, unique gifts for Easter, First Holy Communion, or Mother’s Day.

Easter Basket Ministry Needs your Help Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer during Lent? Think Outside The Box by Ernie Basile

This is an overused saying perhaps, but if Jesus were speaking to us today He might very well say to us, “Think outside the box!” For that’s what “repent” or “metanoia” really means. It means to change our way of thinking and seeing things. He turned the world upside down, and He wants us to see it His way, but we keep trying to turn it back. Maybe the Good News sounds too good to be true. It’s hard to change our way of thinking and seeing things. Often what we Christians are doing is just rearranging the furniture on the Titanic (another tired phrase. Sorry). The way of Christ is not that of ascending, but descending, not acquiring more, but less, not being the greatest, but the least, not being powerful, but powerless. Our Catholic symbols speak these truths powerfully, without words. On the first day of Lent, ashes reminded us that much in our life is ashes - our failures, our weaknesses, what we find hard to accept in ourselves. And the central symbol of our faith is the crucifix, the form of capital punishment for the Romans. It is a sign of failure, disgrace, powerlessness, defeat. The good news is that just as by His wounds we are healed, so by our own wounds we are healed and we heal each other. This is the great spiritual lesson of the 12 step programs. And it is the wisdom of St. Paul, who boasts that when he is weak, then he is strong. What a call to change our way of thinking! Often in my life I have found encouragement and inspiration from the good that others do, by their virtue and accomplishment. But just as often I have found this to be true when others have shared with me their brokenness, their struggles, their failures and even their sins. It reminds me that a saint is a sinner who keeps trying, and with Pope Francis we can all say, “I am a sinner”.

Prayer Lord, help me to see and embrace my own spiritual poverty. so your strength can flow through me.

Divine Mercy Sunday, April 12 Reconciliation at 2:00 p.m. Prayer Service at 3:00 p.m.

St. Mary Immaculate Parish will celebrate a Divine Mercy Prayer and Reconciliation Service on Sunday, April 12 in the Church. All are welcome to participate with us in this celebration of God’s mercy. Confessions begin at 2:00 p.m. and continue throughout. At 3:00 p.m. we begin the Prayer Service with Veneration of the Divine Mercy image, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Divine Mercy Way of the Cross, Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, and Benediction and Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Divine Mercy Sunday, instituted worldwide by Pope John Paul II in 2000, is held each year on the Sunday after Easter. Jesus promised that those who fittingly observe the Divine Mercy Feast will receive complete forgiveness of sin and all temporal punishment associated with sin. For more information on observing the feast day, please visit www.marian.org.

Eucharistic Adoration as well as Confessions will be available from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Church every Friday from February 20 through March 27. Employment Ministry - “Winning the Hiring Game” Albert Einstein said, “You need to learn the rules of the game. Then you need to play it better than anyone else.” Employers devised the hiring game and only they know the rules. The game is designed so they always win. If you are tired of losing the hiring game and want to start winning, attend Tom Nosal’s presentation – “Winning The Hiring Game” on March 24 and part 2 on April 28. “Winning the Hiring Game” will expose the rules of the game and show you how to devise a strategy to beat the odds and get employed faster. During the March 24 session you will learn:

• What goes on behind the scenes of the hiring process • How hiring mangers find their best candidates • Proven strategies to getting in front of the hiring manager

During the April 28 session you will learn: • How to construct a resume that a hiring manager will read • Acing the interview process and answering the tough questions • Overcoming objections • Winning the game

Tom Nosal is a career and management coach and the President of Scaling Up, Inc. He has over twenty years of experience as a hiring manager and has been coaching job seekers and business owners for five years. Tom is the author of the book Scaling Up Your Job Search: Three Strategic Steps to Landing Your Ideal Job. Please attend Tom’s presentations at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, March 24 and April 28th at St. Mary Immaculate Parish. There is no cost to attend and everyone is welcome. Dress is casual. For more information, email [email protected].

Help for Women Who are Forced into Abortion The following information was recently published as a letter to the Editor in the Herald News. I am very concerned over the overwhelming factual and anecdotal evidence that shows the majority of mothers who choose abortion actually are forced or coerced by someone close to them. Many pregnant women are coerced by the father of the child, family members, friends and by society in general. So if there is a mother who is reading this letter and feels she is being pressured or even threatened into an abortion, there is help available. You can contact any number of pregnancy resource centers that will keep your contact confidential. Here are just a few, and you can call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Help is just a phone call away.

Por todas las personas que sufren la pérdida de un hijo en un aborto: para que Cristo las consuele en su dolor y llene su corazón con paz y esperanza.

Roguemos al Señor.

For each person suffering from the loss of a child through abortion: may Christ console them in their grief and fill their heart with peace & hope.

We pray to the Lord.

The conference is on March 21 at the Blanchette Catholic Center -- 16555 Weber Road, Crest Hill, IL. Check-in is at 9:00 a.m. A 4:00 p.m. Mass, celebrated by Bishop Joseph Siegel, will conclude the conference. The featured speaker for this well- attended annual event will be Father Jim Friedel, OSA, a popular retreat leader who has traveled the USA and Canada presenting parish missions. Father Jim carefully weaves his stories together with spiritual insight and creates presentations that are both humorous and joy–filled. The suggested donation of $35 includes morning coffee, lunch and resources. For information or to register please call the Office for Family Ministry of the Diocese of Joliet at 815-838-5334. Bishop Blanchette Scholarship Award Are you aware that the Joliet Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (CCW) offers a scholarship? The "Bishop Blanchette Scholarship Fund" was established in 1982 as a living memorial to honor our late Bishop Romeo Blanchette. Scholarships in his name are made available each year to students seeking assistance to attend Catholic High Schools in the Joliet Diocese. This fund is supported by donations.

Students are nominated by their parishes. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of scholastic achievement and financial need, as well as a statement from candidates in

which they express their reasons for wanting a Catholic Education.

For an application, please call or stop by the SMI School Office during regular School Office Hours. The completed application is due to the SMI CCW (you may leave it at the Commons Desk and they will put it in the CCW Mailbox) no later than Sunday, April 5th (Easter Sunday).
