Caesarea / Mount Carmel / Megiddo / Jezreel Valley / Nazareth / Jordan River Baptismal Site Drive along the Mediterranean Sea to the ruins of Caesarea, founded by Herod the Great in 22 B.C. Here Peter proclaimed the good news to the Roman centurion, Cornelius. Explore the city's famous Roman theater, harbor, newly-excavated hippodrome, and palace before continuing north to Mt. Carmel, where Elijah prayed down the fire of the Lord and defeated the 450 prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18). From this 1500 foot high vantage point, look over the beautiful Jezreel Valley, the location for the future gathering of the nations at Armageddon. Visit the excavations of the city of Megiddo, where 26 separate layers of cities have been found, each one built on top of the ruins of the previous city. Drive by Nazareth to enjoy an overview of Jesus' boyhood home; then pass by Cana, where Christ performed His first miracle (John 2). Travel along the Jordan River, stopping at the traditional site of Jesus' baptism by John, for a special time of reflection and baptism. Mount of Beatitudes / Tabgha / Capernaum / Jesus Boat / Ein Gev Gain a sense of a fisherman's life viewing the "Jesus Boat" at Nof Ginnosar. Not a replica but a preserved piece of history dating back to the time of Christ, this wooden boat was discovered in 1986 on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Visit the Mt. of Beatitudes with its beautiful view overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the site where Jesus delivered one of His most powerful messages, the Sermon on the Mount. Along the shoreline of the Sea of Galilee is Tabgha. It is believed that here Jesus walked along the shore and called out to Simon Peter and Andrew who were casting out their nets. James and John were also called to follow Jesus during that walk by the shore. This too is believed to be the place of the loaves and fishes miracle. Visit Saint Peter's Primacy, where Christ met with His disciples for the "last breakfast" prior to His ascension (John 21). Here Christ restored Peter to himself after the disciple's three denials. Walk the pathways of Capernaum, Jesus' hometown where He performed more miracles than at any other place. View the ruins of the ancient synagogue where Christ taught, and see the house where Peter lived. Enjoy the food and fellowship of a "St. Peter's Fish" lunch at the kibbutz Ein Gev on the eastern shore of the Sea. In northern Israel view the Golan Heights where many of the modern day battles for Israel's independence have taken place. Return to Tiberias by sailing across the Sea of Galilee aboard a wooden boat. Beth Shean / Jericho / Jordan River Valley / Mount Scopus Travel 17 miles south of the Sea of Galilee to Beth Shean to view the spectacular Roman and Byzantine ruins. The bodies of King Saul and his sons were hung from the city walls (1 Samuel 31:10-12) after they were defeated by the Philistines. Travel through the Jordan River Valley past the city of Jericho. Known as the City of Palms, Jericho is the oldest continually occupied and lowest elevation town in the world. Jericho's contributions to civilization are unique. The domestication of plants and animals and the invention of pottery took place in ancient Jericho 1000 years before Mesopotamia and Egypt, while the walls and towers of Jericho preceded the pyramids of Egypt by 4000 years. The 23 mile journey from Jericho to Jerusalem is truly spectacular. From 850 feet below sea level travel up to Jerusalem at an elevation of 2500 feet above sea level. As we approach Jerusalem we will view the Old City from Mt. Scopus. The view will evoke feelings of wonder and gratitude… words can not express! Enter the city and begin your days of exploring and immersion into the history of this place. Dead Sea Scrolls / En Gedi / Masada / Dead Sea In 1947, a Bedouin boy looking for his lost goats, found what would come to be known as the "Dead Sea" scrolls in caves behind Qumran. The scrolls had been hidden in clay jars for nearly two thousand years, preserved by the arid climate of the region. Fragments were found of all the Old Testament books except the book of Esther. This find at Qumran further evidenced the inspiration and accuracy of our Bible. Pass by En Gedi, the largest oasis along the western shores of the Dead Sea and the locale where David hid as he attempted escape from Saul (1 Samuel 31). Travel high above the shores of the Dead Sea and arrive at Masada, the spectacular mountaintop fortress built by Herod the Great. Masada is famous for being the last stronghold of the Jewish rebellion against the Romans. Its elevation is 190 feet above sea level and about 1500 feet above the level of the Dead Sea. From the top of Masada, the Roman camps and siege ramp can still be seen. At 417 feet below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest spot on the face of the earth. A stop here provides opportunity to experience the saltiest body of water on the face of the earth. One of the largest earth moving projects in Israel uncovered these 200 foot wide main entrance steps into the temple. Sit on the temple steps where we know Jesus actually walked. View the Dome of the Rock, erected by the Muslim ruler Abd el-Malik in 688-691, on the spot which Israel's Temple once stood. Walk the route Jesus walked, the Via Dolorosa, as he bore his cross heading toward Golgotha and his crucifixion. At the Western "Wailing" Wall, the Jews' most sacred site, observe the lifestyles and traditions of the people within Jerusalem's walls. Built by Herod the Great, this retaining wall of the Temple Mount Complex is the most holy place accessible to the Jewish people today. Continue through the Old City, stopping at Saint Anne's Church for a visual and auditory sensory experience. The walking tour passes the Pools of Bethesda (John 5) where Jesus healed a lame man. It continues past the Fortress of Antonia, the barracks of Roman soldiers. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher commemorates the hill of crucifixion and the tomb of Christ's burial. The original building was erected by the mother of Emperor Constantine in 330 A.D. and is centered in the heart of the Christian Quarter. On the grounds of tradition alone, this church is the best candidate for the location of these events. Mount of Olives / Palm Sunday Walk / Dominus Flevit / Garden of Gethsemane / Garden Tomb Separated from the Eastern Hill (the Temple Mt. and the City of David) by the Kidron Valley, the Mt. of Olives has always been an important feature in Jerusalem's landscape. From the top of the Mt. of Olives the city of Jerusalem unfolds in a majestic panoramic view. It is here that Jesus delivered the Olivet Discourse and foretold the destruction of the temple (Matthew 24-25). Descend the Mt. and stop at Dominus Flevit. Built in 1955 to commemorate the Lord's weeping over Jerusalem, Dominus Flevit features a beautiful view of the city through its distinct chapel window. Excavations during construction of the church uncovered a number of ossuaries (bone boxes) from the time of Jesus with numerous inscriptions. Here be reminded of what the Messiah saw as He looked out over Jerusalem. Further down the gentle decline we find the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-45) where Jesus prayed the night before His crucifixion. The solemn serenity of the Garden Tomb will give a sense of the agony of Christ's crucifixion at Calvary (Luke 23). In this sacred setting we will have a special communion service celebrating Christ's victory over death and experience the exhilaration and reality of His resurrection. Model City / Shrine of the Book-Dead Sea Scrolls / Holocaust Museum A visit to the Model City of Jerusalem affords the viewer a chance to see Jerusalem as it was during the time of the Second Temple and before the City was ransacked by the Romans. Built to a 1:50 scale with authentic construction materials - Jerusalem Stone and Marmor, it is based upon historical documentation and meticulously carried out. The Shrine of the Book is the home of the exceptional archaeological finds: the Dead Sea Scrolls and other rare ancient manuscripts. The discovery of these, and subsequent finds, have changed forever the study of the Old Testament. The Shrine of the Book, opened in 1965, is charged with the display and preservation of the Scrolls. Following lunch, the remainder of the day will be spent at Yad Vashem, Israel's extraordinary memorial to the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust. Established in 1953, Yad Vashem has been entrusted with documenting the history of the Jewish people during the Holocaust period, preserving the memory and story of each of the victims, and imparting the legacy of the Holocaust for generation to come through its archives, library, schools and museums. Spend a portion of the day exploring the streets of Jerusalem at your leisure. Jewish Quarter (Cardo) / Tomb of David / Saint Peter in Gallicantu / Upper Room / Pilate's Judgment Hall Stroll the streets of the Jewish Quarter (Cardo) enjoying the sights, sounds and fragrances that make up this portion of the old city of Jerusalem. Stop at shops, barter at markets, and gain a unique perspective on the ancient customs and lifestyles that are still a part of the life and culture of Jerusalem today.
