Our Mission Statement To raise funds and create awareness

of the services which our hospital provides to maintain and improve

the quality of patient care.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

BONNIE WAGGONERAUXILIARY FOUNDATION WELCOMES NEW MEMBER

Once again I am most pleased to welcome a new member to the Foundation’s board of directors. Bonnie Waggoner a well-known member of The Villages® real estate team, brings a wealth of knowledge about The Villages® development to the board. As the founder of The Villages® Relocation Department, Bonnie states, “I am very passionate about The Villages® community and have always had an interest in healthcare. The Villages® Hospital is also one of my passions and I have enjoyed watching it grow and develop.”

We’ve had two highly successful events since our last newsletter. The 4th annual Foundation Dinner was held at Rohan Recreation Center with excellent attendance and an interesting and informative program. Dick Campbell and Cathy Reardon brought attendees up-to-date on activities of the Foundation over the past year. The latest edition of the “Happenings”, which shows Foundation growth in a number of areas since we were organized, was distributed.

Central Florida Health President/CEO Don Henderson talked about the system’s exciting news concerning the proposed new stand alone emergency center to be located near Brownwood. CFH has closed on the property located across Highway 44 from the main entrance to Brownwood. Susan Williams, Director of Nursing at TVRH, and Joan Hanosek, Second Vice President of the TVRH Auxiliary, described dramatic changes underway in the hospital’s emergency room.

The Hearts for Our Hospital Big Bike Weekend was a huge success. Over 370 individuals participated in rides ranging from 10 to 100 miles. This event, conducted jointly with the Sumter Landing Bicycle Club, has grown dramatically since its inception in 2015.

And, of course, all hands are on deck planning the Foundation’s annual Gala, scheduled for Feb. 10, 2018. Board First Vice Chairman, Diane Kupchak and her team are working to make this the most successful Gala ever.

David Gardner, ChairmanThe Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation

The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation’s newest board member Bonnie Waggoner has been passionate about the community’s hospital since before it was built. Shortly after Bonnie relocated to The Villages® from California in the mid-1990’s, her father passed away unexpectedly in a hospital in Ocala. He became ill on Christmas day and died a week later on New Year’s Day. “In my Dad’s memory I wanted to see a hospital in this community,” said Bonnie.

Bonnie was involved in the fundraising to help build the hospital and through the years she has been very involved in the Foundation’s special events including the Gala. “My whole family has a passion for the hospital,” said Bonnie. “I am very proud of TVRH. I have

seen many people go through different situations at the hospital and I am always impressed with the quality of care.”

As a board member Bonnie is looking forward to contributing to the forward momentum of the Auxiliary Foundation. “I think the Foundation is on a good path and I believe in their mission.” Bonnie continued, “I am a strong believer in giving back. The Villages® is such a wonderful place to live, this is my way of giving back.”

Bonnie works in The Villages® Sales office as the Relocation Services Coordinator helping people sell their homes anywhere in the country. She and her husband Don live in the Cottages at Lake Sumter.

Over 370 riders came out to enjoy the 3rd annual Hearts for our Hospital Big Bike Weekend. The event, held in November, is quickly becoming a Villages tradition and is also on a trajectory to become one of the largest annual events benefiting The Villages® Regional Hospital (TVRH) Auxiliary Foundation. The 2017 Big Bike Weekend raised a net of more than $50,000 for the Auxiliary Foundation.

Riders could choose routes ranging from 10-miles to 100-miles. More than 65% percent of the riders were over the age of 60. See the inset for participation breakdown. Ridership in 2017 was up almost 20% from 2016.

Many chose to ride in teams, adding a little friendly competition to the event. There were four new categories this year: Armed Forces, Colleges, Faith-based and Rotary Clubs, joining the returning teams of Wealth Management, Health Services, Bicycle Clubs and Restaurants. Team winners will be announced at the Hearts for our Hospital Gala in February.

The Big Bike Weekend is a partnership between the Auxiliary Foundation and the Sumter Landing Bicycle Club. The event is co-chaired by SLBC members Pat and Lori Gillis and Dave Taylor, TVRH Board Member. “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the 2017 Big Bike Weekend,” said Pat Gillis. “This event is only possible because of the gracious support of our sponsors, the hard work of over hundred volunteers and the participants.” The Auxiliary Foundation would like to extend a special thanks to Buffalo Crossing and Harbor Chase for providing breakfast and lunch, respectively for all of the riders.

Plans are already underway for the 2018 Big Bike Weekend. You can stay tuned into this event by going to the website: www.H4HBikeWeekend.com.

Over one hundred guests attended The Villages® Regional Hospital (TVRH) Auxiliary Foundation Dinner at the Rohan Recreation Center. This annual event allows people interested in the work of the Auxiliary Foundation to come together for dinner and to hear the latest happenings and accomplishments of both the Auxiliary Foundation and the hospital.

A highlight of the 2017 Foundation Dinner was the prize drawing for a Viking River Cruise. Mitch and Monique Saunders were the lucky winners.

Dick Campbell, President of TVRH Auxiliary Foundation provided guests with an update on the Foundation. Over 2.6 million dollars has been dedicated to The Villages® Regional Hospital. Room Naming Sponsorship has increased resulting in more than four million dollars in cash and pledges.

TVRH Administrative Director of Nursing, Susan Williams, and Vice President of Auxiliary Membership and Patient Survey, Joan Hanosek, shared an update on the renovations, expansion and improvements in the hospital’s emergency room. In addition to the expansion of 50 beds in 2016, the ER also now offers vertical care for patients with non-critical health issues. Vertical care is an area with recliners allowing patients to be treated while leaving the beds for the more serious cases. Three open nursing stations provide the opportunity for better team work.

Catholic Charities of Central Florida, based in Orlando, covers nine counties including Marion, Lake and Sumter. Their six major ministry focus points are preventing homelessness, providing healthcare, feeding the hungry, comprehensive refugee services, emergency response services and providing housing for low-income seniors and families.

The health care component is how they came to partner with the TVRH

Auxiliary Foundation. Catholic Charities of Central Florida manages the Lazarus Clinic in Wildwood. The clinic provides preventive and intermediate care to those that cannot afford health care. The care provided at the clinic prevents people from letting a medical situation worsen to the point of going to the emergency room. It benefits both the patient and the emergency rooms at local hospitals. Lazarus operates with an all-volunteer workforce, staffed in part by doctors and nurses from The Villages® Regional Hospital.

“I met Dick Campbell at Taste of The Villages, an annual fundraiser, in 2016,” said Gary Tester, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Central Florida. “It is so important for the Lazarus Clinic and the hospital to work together as community partners. The TVRH Auxiliary Foundation is an equally important partner as it helps Catholic Charities to share the good news of this ministry across community sectors that Catholic Charities simply doesn’t reach.”

Taste of The Villages, held at the Savannah Center, is an entertaining evening of food provided by local restaurants, music and entertainment. “We raise 65 to 70 percent of our annual operating budget of $115,000 at this one event,” said Tester. “We are very blessed with the support we get.”

This year the Taste of The Villages will be on Tuesday, February 6. For more information or to purchase tickets, call Renee Baker at 407-658-1818, ext. 1121.

When it came to selecting a room at The Villages® Regional Hospital (TVRH) to name in honor of her husband, the MRI suite was a natural choice for Diane Kupchak. She and her husband, Bob, owned and operated Open MRI of South Florida, Inc. for approximately five years. Located in Hollywood, FL the business was new technology when it opened in 1990. “It was really a big deal when it opened, the press came out to see

the machine lowered into the specially-constructed building,” said Diane.

After selling the business, the couple spent nine years in Celebration, FL. Deciding they needed more people their age to play with, they moved to The Villages® in 2006. Unfortunately they had very little time together in The Villages® as Bob passed away a few months after they moved here.

In the process of putting her life back together after Bob’s death, Diane began to volunteer with TVRH Auxiliary Foundation. She started with the Celebration Brick Garden and began helping with the annual Gala. She named a patient room in the oncology wing. “I really believe in our mission and want to help the Foundation help our hospital,” said Diane. She is currently a TVRH board member and co-chair of the 2018 Gala.

Wanting to do more Diane decided to name a room in honor of Bob and their thirty-seven year marriage. Looking at a list of available rooms as soon as Diane saw the MRI suite her decision was made. “We took a big gamble opening our MRI business and it was successful, and I am now able to do this,” said Diane. “Giving back and making a difference in the community is very important to me.”

The dedication plaque outside the MRI suite includes lines from a 1933 Dylan Thomas poem cherished by Diane and Bob, “Though lovers be lost love shall not; and death shall have no dominion.” It also includes the line: Love Never Dies, 11/1/69 – Eternity.

DIANE KUPCHAK

The Villages® Regional Hospital (TVRH) Auxiliary Foundation has found another educational avenue to fulfill their mission of improving patient care. Scholarships for hospital team members have been part of the Auxiliary Foundation’s program since 2015. This year Michael Pittman, TVRH’s Chief Clinical Officer and Site Administrator, requested seed money from the Foundation to start an advanced certification program at the hospital for nurses in a specialized field. The certification process is inclusive of a two-day intensive workshop and sitting for a national test. Once certified, these nurses are recognized as experts in their field.

Pittman worked with Tammi Huntt, TVRH Clinical Educator, and Susan Williams, Administrative Director of Nursing, to implement the program at TVRH. “Nurses with advanced certification really understand the science behind nursing. Having this level of nursing staff results in better patient care and less readmissions,” said Huntt.

“Nurses with advanced certification are not only respected by their fellow team members, they are valued by physicians in a different way,” said Williams. “It is also a real comfort to a new nurse to have someone of that skill level mentoring them.”

The advanced certification program doubles the number of mandatory continuing education units a nurse is required to take to maintain their license.

“It is a real feather in our cap to have this certification here at our hospital,” said Huntt. Advanced certification is not typical of hospitals in this area which is one way the program will begin to pay for itself. The certification classes, taught by nationally-known speakers, are also available to nurses from other hospitals for a nominal fee.

“We are thankful the Foundation made this program possible,” said Pittman. “The dollars for this program directly equate to better patient care,” added Williams.
