What a contrast the years of 2019 and 2020 were …. and yet, what NEVER

differed was the unwavering support which YOU, The Villages of Indiana’s loyal

partners, invested in Indiana’s most vulnerable children, youth and families! The

Villages can NEVER adequately express our GRATITUDE; but we CAN

demonstrate our relentless STEWARDSHIP!

The 2019 year was filled with successes, both at the organizational and child and

family impact level! Outcome results for The Villages vital services were stellar,

a reflection of the commitment and capacity of our dynamic Board of Directors;

our staff; foster, adoptive and kinship caregivers; and our volunteers, including

The Villages Advisory Council and our Prevent Child Abuse Indiana Advisory

Committee! Prestigious national and Indiana Foundations, like Casey Family

Programs, Ticket to Dream, Lilly Endowment, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable

Trust, and the J. E. Fehsenfeld Family Foundation demonstrated their ongoing

confidence in The Villages impact on child and family well-being with their

continuation of generous philanthropic program funding! Devoted “Friends of

The Villages" like EILEEN AND DOUG WILLIAMS and STEVE AND ARLENE

DUNN and their families assured that The Villages' largest fundraiser, our Annual

Golf Classic, would be hugely successful, thanks to their TITLE SPONSORSHIPS!

DIAPER DAY, the “brainchild” of Ann Wantz King, once again provided thousands

of diapers for the infants and toddlers whose lives we touch! Prevent Child

Abuse Indiana was re-charted by a team from Prevent Child Abuse America with

one of the highest scores ever awarded!

And then, came 2020, a year like no other, not only for The Villages, but for ALL

of us! Thanks to OLD NATIONAL BANK, and CEO MARK BRADFORD, The

Villages' children and families were the fortunate, deserving beneficiaries of one

of the last major events in Central Indiana, 100 MEN WHO COOK, before the

COVID -19 Pandemic struck and reordered our lives. This unique fundraiser

generated $175,000 to support The Villages …. dollars which quickly became

essential in supporting those we serve with the “basic needs” that the pandemic

exposed, of food; housing; utilities; sanitizing cleaning supplies; and, especially,

critical support for the sudden pivot to E-LEARNING for every school aged child!

Like every other non-profit in Indiana, The Villages immediately “pulled out all

the stops” to protect, serve, and support our phenomenal staff and those we are

honored to serve …..

10,000 individuals during the course of the year …. meeting ANY and

EVERY need that surfaced amidst an unprecedented international

pandemic and a long-overdue focus on racial injustice and disparities!

Lilly Endowment, the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, and the

United Way of Central Indiana became huge and generous partners of

the vital work which needed to be done, throughout the state, EVERY

DAY! The Villages staff pivoted to work even longer days, virtually, to

assure that safety and sustenance were afforded EACH child, youth,

and family! Foster Parent Support Groups, Kinship Care Monthly Events,

Foster Parent Training Sessions, Post Adoption Services, Healthy

Families Parent Support Visits, Older Youth Services Assessments and

Support, and Wrap Around Mental Health Services ALL continued to

meet the pressing needs of 3,100 children and youth, daily! Prevent

Child Abuse Indiana provided endless virtual trainings for ALL parents

and caregivers, statewide! The treadmill of commitment and services

was RELENTLESS, but it was also exactly what those we are honored

to serve yearned for and needed!

At the same time, The Villages, embarked, in earnest, on our MARCH

for a more Diverse, Inclusive and Equitable organization…a MARCH

which is now, fully integrated into EVERY aspect of our agency

processes, our hiring, our staff training, and our work with children and

families! Our commitment to Equity and Inclusion is not a “list”, but a

LENS, through which we now view every decision we make, as an

organization!

Everyone desperately needed HOPE amidst the endless challenges of

2020; and THANKS TO YOU, everyone touched by The Villages

savored their own unique GLIMPSE and GIFT of HOPE! We ARE and

Mission: To be the voice in Indiana for preventing child abuse in all its forms.

COMMUNITY RESOURCE ADVOCATE FOR PREVENTIVE POLICIES & PROGRAMSPREVENTION COUNCIL NETWORK

2019 HIGHLIGHTSSuccessfully completed the Prevent Child Abuse Americare-chartering process. Scoring 99.1% on a review of theprogram’s accomplishments for the past 4 years.Provided 126 educational programs and outreach on all forms of child maltreatment to nearly 3,264 individuals. Supported 46 Child Abuse Prevention Councils, representing 56 Indiana counties. PCAIN staff trained in the Nurturing Parents curriculum to begin providing informational "Parent Cafes" on nurturing parenting skills.

2020 HIGHLIGHTSProvided education programs and outreach to over 3,000 individuals, majority throughonline training and resources due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Began a Nurturing Parents Group with Dove Recovery House for women recovering fromsubstance abuse disorders. 46 Child Abuse Prevention Councils in place, representing 56 Indiana counties. 18 men graduated from the Nurturing Fathers' Classes. Initiated the Childhood Trauma Informed Practices Project in collaboration with InfancyOnward, Riley Child Development Center, and Indiana Youth Services Association. One of the primary partners in the creation of a Statewide Child Abuse PreventionFramework.

There are many heartwarming stories about how childrenserved by The Villages find forever families. JenniferHatfield, a foster care case manager for The Villages inKokomo, shares the unforgettable adoption journey ofMarcus and his mom, Kelly.

As a case manager who works closely with medical needschildren served by Howard County, I was introduced toMarcus in hopes that I could find him a foster home. At thetime, he was at Riley Children’s Hospital being treated forhealth issues affecting his heart and respiratory system. Hewas a very lethargic little boy with a trach and vent, who hadminimal human touch throughout the day, other than thenurses who changed his diapers or vent settings.

A HOME FOR MARCUS

One day I was visiting another child in foster care also under medical treatment. I was joined by a foster caremanager with the Indiana Department of Child Services who asked about the progress to find a home forMarcus, who was now at another facility. She told me things weren’t looking good for Marcus. He had atrach and continued to suffer from infections (not unusual in facilities with vent children). It was likely Marcuswould die in that facility, I was told.

As I discussed Marcus with the DCS worker, Kelly, the nurse caring for the child wewere visiting, overheard us. She asked to see a recent photo of Marcus. She beganto cry the moment she saw his photo. Kelly shared that she was unable to havechildren of her own. She continued to stare at the photo and later said, “This is myson.”

Almost instantly, Kelly decided she was going to welcome Marcus into her homeand heart. She began foster parent training and started weekend visits with Marcusa few months later.

Marcus was placed in Kelly’s home during the summer of 2017. He blossomedunder Kelly’s care. Once unable to sit up on his own, Marcus is now walking on hisown! He is off a ventilator and placed on a heat and moisture exchanger. Now, he’sonly on oxygen at night. He knows sign language and will start preschool soon.

And, the best news of all, Kelly adopted Marcus last month. A child no oneexpected to survive past his first birthday is now thriving and in a loving foreverhome. We are grateful for Kelly, who followed her heart, which led her tosomething she never thought she could attain: Motherhood.The moral of this story is to never give up hope of finding a home for ANY child.They are all so worth it and touch our lives every day.
