North-east based PD Ports will handle the majority of

Hitachi Transport System Europe’s (HTSE) rail car imports

destined for Hitachi’s Rail Vehicle Manufacturing Facility

(RVMF) in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.

The train body shells are coming into PD Ports owned Teesport via

a new Ro-Ro service direct from Japan by global shipping line, “K”

Line; some body shells are also being brought into the Port by road

where they will be stored prior to onward transportation by road

vehicles to the facility.

The service, which started in September 2015, saw 'K' Line’s newly

announced 7500-unit Ro-Ro vessels ship the body shells from the

Port of Tokuyama-Kudamatsu, Japan to Teesport. The journey

covered some 12,000 nautical miles over 35 days; the equivalent of

travelling from John O’Groats to Land’s End more than 16 times.

Once at Teesport, the body shells are towed from the vessel

in a specific order and then manoeuvred using bespoke lifting

equipment designed by PD Ports in partnership with HTSE.

The body shells, which measure 26 metres in length, are then

placed onto vehicles before being transported to a secure

storage area at the Port.

Each vessel will carry five or nine car trains with a maximum

of 18 body shells imported per shipment.

To be an integral part of the Hitachi supply chain is a role we

are very proud to undertake. The importance of Hitachi Rail in

the wider economic context of the North-East is of tremendous

significance and will provide a much needed boost to the region.

Operinter—the Spanish member of the FPS global

forwarding and NVOCC network—has opened two

new branches.

The first, in Peru, will primarily handle imports, providing door-to-

door service. It offers full multi-modal forwarding services, and is

an accredited Customs Broker with a strategic alliance with GLF

Aduanas (the Peruvian Customs Agency). It is Operinter’s third

office in Latin America.

Based in the capital, Lima, the new operation is managed by Maria

Elena Reyes who previously worked for Acciona Forwarding and has

more than 25 year’s experience in the freight industry.

The second new Operinter office is in Portcastello, in Spain’s

Castellon province. A satellite of the company’s operation in

neighbouring Valencia, the new branch is targeting the major

ceramics and tile-producing business located in the region. It is

Operinter’s 20th domestic office.

Peru is one of the most active economies in Latin America,

attracting strong investment from Spanish companies in recent years.

This is driving growth in two-way trade with Spain, making it a logical

next step in our international expansion.

Our Castellon branch has great potential to support the region’s

ceramics manufacturers, giving them easier and more local access

to our comprehensive range of services.

Pedro Lopez, Director Managing, Operinter

Operinter is Spain’s third-largest freight forwarding and logistics

organisation, with twenty branches in Spain and seven branches in other

countries. Sister company Traimer has four further offices in Spain.

Melbourne, Australia, 26 February 2016: CEVA Logistics,

one of the world’s leading supply chain companies’,

today signaled its commitment to existing customers

and market growth in Western Australia with the official opening

of new state of the art facilities at Hazelmere and High Wycombe.

The new 60,000m2 multi-user complex at Hazelmere, and bespoke

40,000m2 integrated transport and new vehicle storage facility at

High Wycombe, were officially opened by the Hon. Bill Marmion MP,

Western Australia’s Minister for Finance and Mines and Petroleum.

CEVA has a long history in Western Australia, and we are

very excited about this next chapter. Our new facilities are

an important investment that will give our customers tangible

benefits through economies of scale, shared resources and

industry-leading technology.

Clayton Noble, M.D. for Australia and New Zealand, CEVA

CEVA constructed the new buildings near the Perth Airport freight

hub and key arterial roads including the Roe, Tonkin and Great Eastern

Highways in close proximity to key infrastructure, and air and ocean

service connections.  Major customers across the Automotive,

Energy & Mining and Consumer & Retail sectors have partnered with

CEVA become the launch tenants of the new facilities. For fast and

efficient movement of goods, both warehouses feature industry-

leading technology, processes and optimised layout configurations.

The sites have also been built incorporating sustainable design

features including translucent roof sheeting for natural light, high

efficiency T5 warehouse lighting, solar hot water systems, drought

resistant landscaping and rainwater harvesting.

The multi-user Hazelmere site has some 4,600 racking locations,

continuous loading docks with levellers, a weigh-in-motion

weighbridge, a 4,000m2 breezeway, advanced materials-handling

equipment, integrated IT and warehouse management systems and

a bonded warehouse.

The High Wycombe site, which is designed to process some 25,000

vehicles each year, features hail protection nets, an automated car

wash and truck height detection sensors.

Houston, TX  USA  24 February, 2016 – CEVA Logistics, one

of the world’s largest supply chain management companies,

today announced that it has launched a new weekly LCL

(Less-than-Container Load) service from Shanghai in China to

Budapest, Hungary.  The new service sees the central European

destination added to CEVA’s already comprehensive LCL service

offering which has been expanding rapidly since the end of 2011.

The weekly service operates direct from the port in Shanghai to

Koper on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast, where containers are then railed

up to the Hungarian capital.  Transit times are 30 days from Shanghai

to Koper and then 5-7 days for the inland transportation.

The CEVA warehouse in Budapest provides the ideal location

for the service from which several other CEVA locations in

Europe can be served.  The company has eliminated additional

transshipment handling costs and devanning at the first port by

taking the service in house.

This is an end-to-end CEVA-owned solution for our LCL

customers.  It starts with our own dedicated trucking network in

China where we can feed into Shanghai from key cities across the

country.  And with our CEVA warehouse in Budapest operating as

our container freight station there is no external handling of

cargo or any third-party warehousing.  It’s a win-win solution

with better controlled transit times and service quality which

are great benefits for customers,

Greg Scott, Global LCL Director, CEVA

Customers will be able to track their boxes by using CEVA’s

OneView tool online and since the entire process is controlled

in-house, CEVA can guarantee the highest security standards.

We are delighted to have successfully completed the

project launching this consolidation container service into

our region.  It’s a great example of teamwork between

CEVA’s Greater China and East & Central Europe clusters

and adds further service enhancements while showcasing our

dedication to operational excellence .

New Corporate Unit is also bundling the logistics

provider’s research and development activities

Kempten, February 25, 2016: Dachser has created a new

central organizational unit, Corporate Solutions, Research

& Development, in order to advance its business with

global, industry-specific logistics solutions and bundle its research

and development activities. Stefan Hohm, an experienced Dachser

manager, will head up this new Corporate Unit. He has led the

Logistics Center in Hof for the past seven years.

The 43-year-old Hohm and his team will implement worldwide supply

chains for customers from focus industries. The new Corporate

Unit will also bundle Dachser’s research and development activities

and will be working closely with the Corporate Unit Corporate

Development & Strategy, as well as with Corporate IT. Hohm will

report directly to CEO Bernhard Simon.

Responsibilities of the new unit also include new and continuing

development of value-added services, which complement

(upstream or downstream) transport and warehousing in the

standardized Dachser groupage network. This includes dedicated

services for special customers, industry-specific value-added

services, and premium services associated with deliveries to

end customers.

Well-established on the market

Dachser has already established two industry-specific solutions in

Europe: Dachser DIY Logistics and Dachser Chem-Logistics, which

handle six million shipments annually. Ralf Meistes (DIY Logistics)

and Michael Kriegel (Chem-Logistics) will continue to head these

two departments, which, however, will be assigned to Corporate

Solutions, Research & Development. Dachser is combining a great

deal of industry expertise in this unit at the global level as well.

For example, Dachser Air & Sea Logistics handles shipments for

customers from the automotive, fashion, sports, pharmaceutical,

and life sciences industries.

We strive to understand the complex logistics requirements of

different industries down to the last detail, develop custom-tailored

solutions, and implement them worldwide by way of our effective

and efficient standardized networks.

Stefan Hohm, Corporate Director

Corporate Solutions, Research & Development, Dachser

In his 23 years at Dachser, Hohm has proven himself in several

management positions, most recently as General Manager of

the Logistics Center in Hof, where his responsibilities included

integrated contract logistics solutions in the European Logistics and

Food Logistics business lines.

FREIGHT INDUSTRY NOT DIRECTLY AFFECTED

BY THE UK BUDGET

BIFA, the British International Freight Association

(www.bifa.org), says that there was little in today's

Budget that was of specific relevance to the freight

and logistics services undertaken by its members in support

of the UK's international trade.

Robert Keen, BIFA's Director General says that BIFA's members

will be concerned by Chancellor of the Exchequer George

Osborne's warning that storm clouds are gathering over the

global economy, with an outlook that is materially weaker.

Any softening in the global economy is likely to have a

material impact on visible trade, which is the lifeblood of

our members.

BIFA welcomed the news that the freeze in fuel duty

would remain, but Keen says it doesn’t mean that the

trade association will stop asking for an outright cut, the

introduction of an essential user rebate and some form of

fuel duty stabilisation mechanism.

BIFA was also disappointed that Osborne did not expand upon

the transport capital spending increase that was announced in

last year's Autumn statement.

Back in November 2105, BIFA welcomed the news that funding

would be provided for the largest road investment programme since

the 1970s, but it would have been good to hear more good news on this

front given that a lack of spending has caused the country’s network of

A roads and motorways to become congested, undermining the UK’s

competitiveness in comparison to its international peers.

The earmarking of £230 million for road improvements in the north

of England, including upgrades to M62, feels like a drop in the ocean

compared to last year.

One of Ireland’s most innovative logistic companies is now

working with the Port of Cardiff in a move that guarantees

container services continue to operate from Wales and

expands the southern UK gateways to Ireland.

Cronus Logistics has engaged with Associated British Ports (ABP)

and integrated Cardiff into its Irish Sea schedule, all part of its

ambitious plans to strengthen its expansion of the southern UK

to Ireland gateways. This new operation enables Cronus Logistics

to offer new door-to-door services for all full load cargoes whilst

specialising in the steel, forestry and building sectors between

Warrenpoint, Dublin, Bristol and Cardiff.

The new gateway to Ireland dovetails neatly with Cronus Logistics’

investment in the steel and metals markets, according to managing

director, Nicola Walker.

Helping to keep the Cardiff service and port operations viable

was only part of the reason we moved into Cardiff. This fits in with

our own business model and coupled with our internal knowledge

and investment in bespoke equipment to handle steel and other

heavy metal engineering products represents a significant step in our

development. The service began at the end of February and we can

now provide door-to-door services from both Cardiff and Bristol in

the UK as well as Dublin and Warrenpoint in Ireland.

Nicola Walker, Managing Director, Cronus Logistics

The 14-acre railhead at Cardiff provides a connected rail terminal

linking directly into the national rail network opening up the

whole of the UK and potential new markets. At Cardiff, full-length

intermodal trains will now be discharged and loaded directly into

the terminal. With an increase in rail traffic, Cardiff also has a large

area of open and covered storage next to the railhead that can easily

accommodate large shipments.

Irish cargoes can also benefit from onward transit from both Cardiff

and Bristol on Borchard Lines West Mediterranean service, with

sailings every five days. By utilising niche ports, Borchard Lines sails

to and from Leixoes, Castellon, Salerno, Piraeus, Limassol, Ashdod,

Haifa, Beirut, Alexandria, Mersin and Salerno. Cronus Logistics via

the Port of Dublin is now also acting as the weekly feeder service

to the Line.

INDUSTRYNEWSCRONUS SHOWS ITS METTLEWITH NEW CARDIFF GATEWAY

Page 11: FORWARDER magazine March 2016 'Eco

FORWARDER magazine March 2016 11

Walker sees this step as vital in developing Cronus Logistics door-

to-door services and also as a natural fit for the company.

Over the past 12 months we have increased our services across

the Irish Sea and developed a strong link with the Port of Bristol

and the southern part of the UK. Wales and Cardiff fit nicely into

our plans for the steel, metals and forestry sectors, all areas we

have strong experience and knowledge operating in. We have shown

there is a more logical approach to door-to-door deliveries between

Ireland and the UK. Now by linking these four ports through our

own services we can strengthen the offerings to these core sectors

to offer reduced road miles, lower CO2 emissions and tailored

deliveries to customer needs.

The Port of Cardiff was given a boost in 2015 with investment

by ABP in new machinery, operational procedures, and

renewable energy projects, all part of the port’s operations

handling more than 12 million tonnes of cargo each year.

Ralph Windeatt, Head of Commercial, ABP South Wales, said:

This trade route is a vital link for our customers in South Wales,

providing connections to suppliers and to important export markets.

We’re pleased to welcome Cronus as a new operator for the route

and hope that the additional capacity they will bring will allow more

customers to benefit from the service and support economic growth

and job creation in South Wales and beyond. We look forward to

working with Cronus to provide a first-class service to users of the

line via Cardiff.

Cronus has ensured the continuation of a container line service at the

port and this can only be good news not only for the portof Cardiff

but also for the four ports associated with this new service. Cronus

has shown it is possible to have a strong line of communication

between customers and suppliers and make door-to-door deliveries

across the Irish Sea to suit those clients. Cardiff has a reputation for

steel and we can see this new link driving this industry sector further

using the Cronus expertise and operations.

Forth Ports has achieved an ISO 50001 Standard in Energy

Management, cementing the businesses’ commitment

towards sustainability and the environment across all its

operations. It is the first time the port operator has achieved the

standard which recognises organisations that have established

‘systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance,

including energy efficiency, use and consumption’.

Dr Derek McGlashan, Group Health, Safety and Environment

Manager said: “Forth Ports have a genuine commitment towards

using sustainable approaches and processes throughout our

operations. The ISO 50001 Standard is a fantastic framework to

support Forth Port’s strategic commitment to create sustainable

communities through long term investment through both large scale

and smaller projects across the business.

Whether it’s our 4-turbine wind farm at Tilbury (‘Britain’s Greenest

Port), LED lighting which continues to be installed across our sites, or

the optimisation and monitoring of operating speeds of our marine

plant including pilot boats and tugs in Scotland, we know that is good

for both the business and the environment. We could not have achieved

this without the support of all our staff and we are committed to the

continuous assessment and auditing that the Standard requires.

The achievement of the ISO 50001 Standard builds on other

recent successes, including Forth Ports’ being named ‘Green

Company of the Year’ in 2013 at the Edinburgh Chamber of

Commerce Business Excellent Awards.

In its day-to-day business Forth Ports helps the UK economy

reduce its carbon footprint by moving large volumes of goods

in the most environmentally friendly way possible. Shipping

large volumes is the most efficient form of transportation for

carbon consumption and Forth Ports annually saves 10 times

more C02 than they consume across their Ports through

the services that are supported. They also strive to develop

supply chain routes that use the Port facilities as much as

possible to further reduce carbon impact for customers.

Last year, Corporate Solutions Logistics won a contract to

deliver all of Vax’s products from their purpose built NDC

in Droitwich to their nationwide array of customers.

Corporate Solutions won the contract after detailed and ongoing

negotiations led by Sales Director Mark Ponsonby and Senior

Logistics Analyst Stuart Payne.

CSL installed an in-house transport management team and working

closely with Vax’s warehousing and supply chain professionals they

devised a system that dealt effectively with Vax’s complex sales profile.

A mixture of in-house dedicated vehicles reinforced with quality

approved suppliers helped us to cover even the most challenging

periods, for example, Christmas, when deliveries doubled over and

above the norm.

They look forward to a long working relationship with Vax and

are currently looking at their whole supply chain from inception

to completion.

Vax are synonymous with high quality domestic appliances and

Corporate Solutions look to provide an equally high quality

distribution operation to complement their products.

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has once

again handled 64 of the world’s most valuable horses,

competing at the Longines Masters of Hong Kong.

Fully recognised as Asia’s biggest and most prestigious equestrian

event, this year’s Longines Masters marked the fourth year of the

event being held in Hong Kong, and was the culmination of a 2016

intercontinental series which began in Los Angeles, before moving

to Paris. It will once again be held at the AsiaWorld-Expo, from 19

-21 February.

As in 2015, the official carrier for the event was Emirates Airline,

for which Hactl is the cargo-handling agent in Hong Kong. Emirates

transported the horses from Liege via Dubai World Central to Hong

Kong, arriving on February 15th.

Hactl unloaded the horses in their air stalls, and transferred them

through its dedicated animal-handling centre, loading them onto

waiting horseboxes using special low-angle ramps to avoid injury.

When the horses were due to return to Liege via Dubai a week later,

Hactl reversed the process.

The entire operation, and the preparation of the Longines Masters

equine competitors, was coordinated from Belgium by European

Horse Services, one of the world’s leading equestrian shipping agents.

Hactl has handled the Longines Masters equine entrants in all its

four years in Hong Kong.

It is great to see this prestigious and unique event back in Hong

Kong once more, and we are delighted to have worked with Emirates

and European Horse Services to ensure that the very valuable

entrants were in perfect condition to take part, and then returned

home safely afterwards. It seems horses handle jetlag very well!

G lobal logistics specialist Transmec Group has launched

a UK-Italy intermodal link with three departures per

week each way.

Offering a fast, cost-effective, eco-friendly and flexible solution,

at the heart of the service is a direct rail connection between

Zeebrugge, Belgium, and Novara in northwest Italy. The secure,

no-transshipment service includes collect and ship capability from

across the UK and forward shipment by road throughout Italy.

Already the market leader for freight carried between the UK and

Italy, the intermodal launch complements existing express and

standard road transport options.

The service offers a compelling alternative to road with differences

in transit times of just 24 hours. As well as being cost-effective, it’s

also environmentally-friendly, helping customers to meet critical

targets for reducing CO2 emissions.

John Simkins, General Manager, Transmec UK

Transit times are also optimised by a short pre-advice notice facility.

Typical schedules include Birmingham-Milan five days, London-

Bologna four days, Leeds-Turin five days.

Transmec is deploying its own-asset fleet of 200 Huckepack trailers

on the route under the direct control of a dedicated office network.

The new intermodal service has got off to a great start. We

already have a large number of orders and we expect demand to

keep on growing. Right from the beginning, customers have seen

tangible benefits and we are receiving a lot of positive feedback.

ENTIRE CULINA HEAVY FLEET AT EURO 6

BY MARCH 2016

Culina will have its entire fleet of nearly 400 vehicles

at Euro 6 standard by March 2016. Furthermore

10% of the Culina fleet will also be LNG fuelled.

The current Culina fleet is a mix of the best vehicles on offer

from leading marks.

To absolutely minimise our on-going impact on the

environment, Culina are looking at fuel economy, vehicle

efficiency, and vehicle utilisation from many angles. We have

made significant investments in developing an extremely

aerodynamic fleet of units and trailers. Our Culina fleet

runs on high specification (Goodyear “Fuel Max”) tyres

that minimise rolling resistance and maximise fuel economy.

We have recently invested in new “Slipstream” fuel efficient

aerodynamic rigid fleet. Urban short trailers are being utilised

to optimise fleet usage, provide fleet flexibility, and minimise

unnecessary mileage. Another significant environmental

investment we have made is in trailers. We now have 62 LST

Trailers (Longer Semi Trailers) which can carry between 2 &

4 Pallets extra. We will now be taking trailers off the road

and moving more goods per trailer.

Mark Matkin, Group Fleet Manager

State of the art refrigerated curtain sider trailers have also been

introduced to the Culina Fleet. These special trailers can deliver

chilled goods and then collect ambient goods and vice versa, again

minimising unnecessary fleet mileage and optimising fleet usage.

We now have the greenest fleet available to Culina. This is testimony

to Culina’s commitment to environmental efficiency , said Mark.

WHAT IS EURO 6?

To combat the rise in air pollution, in 1993 the European

Commission introduced Euro 1 legislation.

Since then the legal steps have become increasingly stricter.

And now with the sixth step—Euro6 legislation—becoming

mandatory in September 2015, the pressure is on.

Galt Transport has taken delivery of 2 Scania R490 6x4

tractor units, both equipped with Palfinger PK88002EH

cranes. These latest additions to Galt’s fleet are the first

of their type to be installed and operated in the U.K.

Fitted by Outreach in Falkirk, the cranes offer a powerful weight-

to-distance-ratio performance. Utilising five boom extensions they

can provide a maximum lift and reach capacity of 15t at 5m and

5.4t at 13.3m.

These trucks join our existing fleet of 24 vehicle mounted cranes,

mixed between Artic and Rigid variants. These new additions are

now the highest capacity cranes in our fleet, which extends our

offering of flexible loading and delivery options to our customers.

Andrew Galt, Operations Director, Galt Transport

The cranes have been installed on Scania R490 6x4 tractor units

with air suspension. These have a 3.5m wheelbase, 490 horsepower

and the 3 pedal versions of Scania’s Opticruise automatic gearbox.

The vehicles are plated at 80t gross weight but will primarily be

operating at 44t under construction and use regulations.  Both trucks

were supplied by Reliable Vehicles, Renfrew (Scania Truck and Bus).

Andrew added, This gearbox option gives us the fuel efficiency of

an automatic while giving our operators the low speed manoeuvring

control of a manual transmission.  This drive train has proven its

ENVIRONMENTFOCUS

Climate change will alter the way we live, the way we

drive and how we will deliver and receive goods. Rising

temperatures are increasing pressure at a global, European

and national level to reduce freight transport carbon emissions.

Freight Transport Association’s Climate Change Policy Manager,

Rachael Dillon focuses on the challenge of decarbonising freight and

how the sector is responding.

The monumental world deal on global warming made at COP21 in

Paris at the end of last year underlined the need for transport carbon

emissions to be addressed. Additionally, collective action amongst

businesses is seen as a fundamental way to achieve significant cuts.

This mirrors FTA’s Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme, a voluntary

initiative to record, report and reduce carbon emissions from road

freight (see text box).

Transport represents around 20 per cent of carbon emissions in the

UK. A breakdown of surface transport carbon emissions shows

that HGVs account for 22 per cent whilst cars represent nearly

60 per cent. The Government has an ambitious target to reduce

overall carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 based on 1990

levels. Freight is difficult to decarbonise due to limited scope for

electrification but as the economy recovers, the concern is that

emissions will rise as the movement of goods inevitably increases.

The UK Committee on Climate Change (CCC) reports that deep

emission cuts in transport by 2050 requires electric to power

batteries or produce hydrogen for fuel cells.  Plug-in electric small

urban delivery trucks will be technically feasible and cost-effective

in the 2020s.  Hydrogen is an option but heavier HGVs will require

large storage tanks.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (of which FTA

is a consortium member) has also undertaken a study for the CCC

on freight carbon reduction. The Centre estimates HGV emissions

could reduce by as much as 34 per cent compared to current levels

by 2035. Such savings could come from improved routing, use of

consolidation centers, higher loading factors, a reduction in empty

running and use of longer, heavier vehicles.

In the here and now, fuel efficiency driver training and using telematics

to optimise vehicle routing and driver behaviour are the top carbon

reduction actions implemented by FTA members. This is followed

by reducing engine idling, more frequent tyre inflation checks and

improving vehicle fill. It is clear that operational efficiencies are the

most viable for companies to reduce fuel usage and subsequently

carbon emissions. More complex measures such as adopting

alternative fuels and low carbon technologies is happening but there

are key challenges.

Leading operators have been trialling or investing in alternative fuels

such as gas and biodiesel or low carbon technologies such as electric

and hybrids for a number of years. However, these alternatives are

yet to go mainstream. Cost, lack of refuelling infrastructure and

concerns over reliability are some of the key reasons to stay with

conventional fuels. Whilst Government has an ambition to have

nearly all vehicles as ultra-low emission vehicles by 2050, much of

the emphasis is on cars. A significant proportion of a £500 million

funding pot between 2015 and 2020 is devoted to cars rather

than commercial vehicles. Without the incentives and support

from Government, commercial vehicles operators will struggle to

make the switch. Government’s Low Carbon Truck Trial which is

supporting over 300 gas HGVs and over 20 refuelling stations has

been crucial.

Many operators have been put off utilising biodiesel due to

sustainability issues as well as contending with vehicle warranties.

Additionally, Government removed the duty differential for

biodiesel in 2010 making it difficult to justify operator burdens

of using biofuels. There has however been an upsurge in

Page 25: FORWARDER magazine March 2016 'Eco

FORWARDER magazine March 2016 25

utilising waste cooking oil. Several businesses have invested in

processing and refuelling infrastructure to support collection

from restaurants and other business premises and converting to

a low-carbon fuel.

Electric is most suited to urban areas. However, short mileage

range, limited payload plus the concerns of battery reliability, not

to mention the sheer cost, puts operators off. Cities have failed to

recognise the need to incentivise these vehicles which are servicing

the needs of businesses and residents.

The European Commission is set to introduce CO2 standards

for new HGVs, buses and coaches. The aim is to encourage the

purchaser to invest in vehicles with the least carbon emissions.

Vehicle manufacturers will be required to adhere to such standards

so whatever happens in the upcoming referendum, we will still

be buying trucks from the continent so the new legislation will

have an impact.

Cars and vans have already come under similar CO2 legislation but

there is concern whether a CO2 system can be so easily applied to

HGVs when there are rigids, semi-trailers and tractors to consider,

not to mention tyres, different gearboxes and axles.

The Commission has therefore developed a vehicle energy

consumption calculation tool (VECTO) to measure fuel

consumption and carbon emissions. The vision is to give

a reliable real world picture of emissions. EU legislation

is expected this summer to bring forward proposals for

legislation this summer requiring carbon emissions from

HGVs to be certified, reported and monitored.

Making best use of other modes is an important element of

reducing carbon emissions too. Costs and competitiveness,

service availability and flexibility and network access are key

barriers for rail freight. Intrinsically rail is best suited to

long distance trunk movements (e.g. from port to national

distribution centre). There are opportunities for utilising

rivers/canals for bulk traffic such as construction materials

or waste but these are very specialised.

Operators are taking significant steps where possible to ensure

that vehicles are fully loaded and that opportunities to backhaul

are taken up. Efforts are taken within the supply chain to work

together to eliminate unnecessary trips. There are limitations on

ensuring a return trip is full, for instance when empty cases need

to be returned and there is no suitable space for other goods.

Page 26: FORWARDER magazine March 2016 'Eco

26 FORWARDER magazine March 2016

ENVIRONMENTFOCUSThere could be potential for increased collaboration to minimise

vehicle trips, but there is no one size fits all approach. Barriers

in data availability, identification of potential collaborative partners

and clarification of competition law need to be addressed as does

the expectations of customers that want to receive goods within

tight timescales.

Policymakers are also considering whether to set global

sector emission reduction targets for international shipping

and aviation. Tackling these emissions tends to be at a global

level. Both sectors are under pressure to develop levy schemes

to provide financial support for the Green Climate Fund, an

adaptation fund for climate change.  Responsibility for shipping

and aviation emissions is allocated to the International Maritime

Organisation and the International Civil Aviation Organisation

respectively. There is no doubt that COP21 has added pressure

to both IMO and ICAO to make more progress on carbon

reduction as both sectors were left out of the final deal much

to the dismay of environmentalists.

The Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF) of which FTA provides the

secretariat has been actively involved in the shipping climate change

debate. Currently, the IMO has developed energy efficiency

standards for ships and is developing a data collection system to

enable individual reporting of ship emissions. The likelihood in the

future is that a market-based measure will be required to drive

emissions down. GSF opposes a global bunker fuel levy approach

which risks passing through costs to shippers and distorting trade

without reducing maritime carbon emissions.

Discussions have reached a far more advanced stage at ICAO.

The global aviation sector has agreed with Member States to

allow for ‘carbon neutral growth’, with a three-step approach

to achieving this - operational improvements to improve fuel

efficiency, greater use of biofuels and carbon offsets. ICAO must

make a decision on how carbon offsets will be implemented in an

upcoming ICAO Assembly in September. Meanwhile in February,

ICAO agreed a CO2 standard for new aircraft, which will require

greater fuel-efficiency.

Finally, we must not forget air quality either as climate change policy

increases. These two issues need to be tackled together rather than

separately to avoid unintended consequences particularly with the

expected rise of Clean Air Zones. The increase in diesel cars to

meet carbon targets has only made air quality worse. We need to

focus on a whole range of operational and technological actions that

reduces fuel to not only make the air cleaner but also contribute to

saving the planet.

LOGISTICS CARBON REDUCTION SCHEME

FTA’s Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme (LCRS) is a

voluntary initiative for industry to record, report and

reduce carbon emissions from freight transport in order

to prevent regulation in this area. The scheme plays a vital

role in providing evidence to government that industry can

voluntarily reduce carbon emissions without the need for

regulation. The scheme is open to any company with at least

one commercial vehicle. In particular, the LCRS helps many

companies to begin the process of recording and reporting

emissions and boosts their green credentials. Currently the

scheme has over 100 members accounting for over 80,000

commercial vehicles. For more details or to sign up, visit...

Outdoors brands are in a constant struggle to differentiate

themselves, and many have turned to sustainability and

environmentalism as a way to stand out from the crowd.

And why not? Brands that make products for the outdoors have a

responsibility to help keep the Earth healthy. Taking small steps like

recycling water bottles into polyester for base layers or reducing

toxic substances from manufacturing add up to buckets of waste

removed from landfills and a healthier home.

One key to the sustainable-brand story that has — until now — not

unlocked any doors to goodwill is that of freight shipping. Hauling

goods (and the materials to make them) around the planet uses

resources and emits pollution.

Expedition 2020

As part of a company-wide initiative to become more environmentally

friendly over the next four years, dubbed Expedition 2020, Bergans

examined its freight policy and pledged to drop airfreight dependence

to less than two percent, down from the company’s current five-

percent flight usage, by adding more waterway and train transit to

the shipment route.

Sustainability Manager Felix Ockborn

Among a rainbow of initiatives to recycle, reduce energy consumption,

and source materials sustainably, eliminating airfreight is an interesting

facet of Expedition 2020.

Choice of transportation is something we can influence

immediately and that’s why we decided to start on this right away,

Felix Ockborn, Sustainability Manager, Bergans

Today, air transportation accounts for two per cent—or 724 million

tonnes—of the world’s man-made CO2 emissions, according to the

International Air Transport Association.

Plane, train, truck, ship: which is best?

One point of controversy is that the majority of aircraft operations occur

at an altitude where the emissions have an uncertain, indirect effect on

ground-level air quality. The Federal Aviation Administration explained

that nearly 10 per cent of aircraft pollutant emissions are expended close

to the earth’s surface (less than 3,000 feet above ground level) while the

remaining 90 per cent is emitted at altitudes greater than 3,000 feet.

The aviation industry also needs more across-the-board fuel efficiency

standards. According to The New Climate Economy, the difference

SUSTAINABLE SHIPPING:

A NEW ENVIRONMENTAL FRONTIER?

Page 29: FORWARDER magazine March 2016 'Eco

FORWARDER magazine March 2016 29

between the greatest and worst fuel-efficient U.S. airlines spanned

27 per cent in 2013, which can be improved through air traffic

management as well as aircraft design technologies.

The lifestyle promoted by brands like Bergans relies on a healthy

environment. But maritime shipping isn’t pollution free. While the

aviation industry has committed to reach carbon-neutral growth

by 2020 and reduce 50 percent of net emissions by 2050, the global

shipping industry also has a goal to reduce CO2 emissions per

ton-kilometer by more than 20 percent in the same time period,

according to the International Maritime Organization. To date,

international shipping by waterway carries 90 percent of world

trade by volume, and in 2012, CO2 emissions reached close to 3

percent of the world’s total, points out The New Climate Economy.

It takes a plan to reduce carbon footprint

In some regards, establishing the most sustainable transit

method hinges on taking time to research and strategically

plan a sustainable combination of airplane, ship, train, and

truck transit. For instance, cotton garments commonly make

their way to the U.S. from western China and the Natural

Resources Defense Council points out that using a truck-air-

truck pathway emits more than five times more particulates and 35

times more greenhouse gases than the rail-ship-rail method—a total

of 99 tonnes of additional greenhouse gases.

100-per-cent natural-powered recreation. Earn your turns!

The key is planning. Until now we’ve always tried to keep airfreight

low, but with this target we will be more strategic on shipments and

focus airfreight only where it is really necessary, said Ockborn about

the company’s current air pathway, which includes flights from the

company’s production site in Asia to Norway, and then from Germany

to the U.S. The alternative shipping methods will include more maritime

shipments and potentially more train shipments from Asia to Europe.

Bergans plans to calculate how much the company’s fuel consumption

and carbon emissions will be reduced by lowering airfreight 3 percent,

but does not have those estimations prepared at time of print.

One additional bonus to switching from air to water is the cost,

though the shipments require more time to reach their destination.

Ockborn explained, Air freight is more costly. The question is

around planning and communication. If planning is done right, the

alternative shipment methods, which take longer, can be used and

still deliver goods on time for the customer.

Emirates’ vision is to become an environmental leader across

the aviation, cargo and travel industries and they are already

taking great strides towards this goal. As an airline carrying

both passengers and cargo their emissions are more than 25 per

cent lower than the IATA global fleet average. This is thanks to their

young fleet of aircraft, which averages just over six years and an

average fuel burn of 4.12 litres for every 100 passenger kilometres.

Indeed, in 2014 Emirates SkyCargo, the cargo division of Emirates,

moved all of its freighter operations to new dedicated facilities at Al

Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, which has less

congestion. The advanced facilities also helped enhance efficiency and

service offering to customers.

At the SkyCargo terminal at DWC, energy-saving light emitting

diode (LED) lights were fitted in the warehouse, for street lights

and for external lights on the building. The LED lights are expected

to save over 970 MWh of electricity a year. Meanwhile, judicious

use of natural lighting in the warehouse minimises electrical lighting

requirements during the day. Water-cooled condensers with closed

circuit chilled water connections were installed in all cold rooms

in the perishable area, eliminating the need for cooling towers,

and the higher performance reduces the running time of the

compressors. Finally, double shutter doors on the loading docks

help to keep in temperature-controlled air.

Moving forward, Emirates will continue to strive for the highest

standards of environmental performance and efficiency, and will

remain ever-mindful of contributing factors such as fuel burn,

procurement, resource consumption and recycling.

How did the role with Maltacourt come about?

I was headhunted by Maltacourt to join their business as

I was brought into the business to deliver a common platform

After completing this work, I took a more commercially

focused role, concentrating on the Blackberry account that

grew exponentially over the next fi ve years. I purchased

Maltacourt in 2011.

Since then you’ve acquired another company, is that right?

That’s right. We recently acquired Millicargo, a transport

company based in Hungary around May last year.

How long have you been in Hungary?

We’ve been in Hungary since we acquired in 2010.

Have you faced any challenges over there?

In 2010-2012 85% of our business belonged to BlackBerry.

We were seeing an enormously high turnover of handsets, to

the point where we were shipping around 16 million a year.

This was where we established our strength in theft-

attractive goods. Given that each handset was costing $600

we ran an extremely high-security operation leading us to

become the primary organisation for high-security networks.

But as BlackBerry dropped off , Maltacourt Hungary went from

being a €30 million revenue business to a near-fatal situation.

We managed to recover the year by turning over €6m in

revenue in 2014. We continued to increase our revenue year

after year and are forecast to do €22m this next year.

We’re standing in good stead and we’re really pleased.

industrial medical sector (Lorriers). The other (Millicargo)

came with 50 trucks.

I’ve noticed that you don’t use your Maltacourt Purple on the European trucks. Is there a reason?

That’s due to the temperature. These are all chilled

transportation trucks its advisable you use a white truck

to refl ect the heat. The purple would have heated the

goods inside.

How big is your fl eet in Europe?

When we purchased in Hungary we got the fl eet

from Millicargo (50 trucks). We have built this up

to about 250 trucks by using 200 subcontractors.

That’s 250 trucks running around Europe with our

name on them.

What products are you moving?

Typically it tends to be dairy products. Hungary is

a good producer of cheap milk, cheese and yoghurts.

We distribute this throughout central Europe.

How did the role with Maltacourt come about?

I was headhunted by Maltacourt to join their business as

I.T. Director.  I had no freight forwarding experience at all,

having worked in the I.T. industry since leaving school.

I was brought into the business to deliver a common platform

between the UK and Canadian offi ces and to develop a client

interface to handle logistics data for Blackberry’s planning

and billing platforms. We only owned 50% of Maltacourt

Hungary when I fi rst started.

Overall, Hungary has been a huge development for you?

We’ve taken a business that was originally an international

transport business and generally just outbound shipments

and we’ve developed that and increased its scale. Hungary

has been our focus for the last two years.

With regards to environmental restrictions, what sort of actions are you taking to reduce your emissions?

All the vehicles are under three years old – the more

modern the vehicle, the lower the emissions. They’re more

fuel effi cient, which is going to cost us less to operate.

We’ve just replaced the oldest fi ve trucks and replaced them with

seven new ones as well as replacing twelve trailers. Unfortunately,

the chilled units are less eco friendly, but if you invest in the newer

models there is a huge diff erence in the impact of the unit.

Have your specialisms changed over the years?

With the loss of BlackBerry we’ve had to draw attention

to our core strengths. We try to stay away from general

freight and focus on the niche markets.

This is why we looked at the Lorriers acquisition; we could

see that we had made a mark with transport so we decided

to open the international transport business.

In Europe we’re shipping chilled, hazardous goods and

industrial (gases). However, our niche is a theft-attractive

goods sector, the high-value products. We also move a lot

of fashion as this is fast moving, and we move ammunition.

Our biggest UK market is pharmaceuticals.

I see you’ve opened up ‘High Tails’ for pet transport. How did that come about?

It had never even entered our minds to launch a pet travel

service, but it’s a huge market.

We’ve started with pets and we’ve developed a brand. Its

not a separate company but we sell it separately. The onsite

vets at Heathrow we are under such pressure and had such a

high demand from customers that they became the shippers.

Our marketing is all about the pet taking a journey. We use

Twitter and Facebook to involve our customers. We ask them

to send us pictures of their pets and it’s a nice way for the

customer to show that they are happy with the service.

How would you describe your company culture?

Our core values are printed everywhere, from the walls

to the coff ee cups. When we recruit we look for people

who are professional, honest and have high levels of integrity.

You have to set yourself apart on who you are, rather than

We are two years into our fi ve-year growth plan.  We have

a number of major European acquisition deals on the go at the

moment. My time is pretty much focused 100% on M&A.

What do you personally look to achieve?

I’ve put together a board of professionals that will

essentially be running the business. I really want to be in a

position where I am primarily focusing on investment. I’ve

enjoyed being really involved but now I want to focus on

increasing the revenue.

With regards to work ethic, I’d really like to bring

the drive and enthusiasm you see over in Europe

and implement it in the UK. This at times can be

challenging, but the challenge is the enjoyable bit.

If you were going to give advice to someone who is aiming to make a career for him/herself in the forwarding industry, what would it be?

Surround yourself with as many experienced people

as possible and learn from them. This is a very complex

industry and can’t be learned from a textbook.  Listen

ASK THEEXPERTS

Most businesses based on road transport are highly

competitive and the winners will be those that have

a clear understanding of their day to day operational

costs. The information also provides a direct correlation with the

operator’s carbon footprint. As they say – if you can’t measure it,

you can’t manage it.

Measuring vehicle fuel consumption is fairly straight forward.

Traditionally expressed as miles per gallon or if you prefer miles per

litre, it’s a calculated figure based on how much fuel was put into the

vehicle and the distance it has travelled.

The benchmarks are clear – so any sudden drop in performance

should ring alarm bells immediately. Given that fuel quality is constant

the only variables and potential anomalies (apart from criminal

activity) are dependent on the condition of the vehicle and the way

in which it is being driven. Factors such as engine performance,

correct tyre pressures, excessive idling and driving style will all have

some impact on the vehicle’s fuel consumption.

Data capture

For fleet operators that have installed depot facilities, there are four

fundamental pieces of information that can be captured as vehicles

are being fuelled; the actual vehicle, the person fuelling, current

odometer reading and the amount drawn.

Fuel management systems require this information to authenticate

the transaction.

There are various methods to identify the vehicle. Datatags are

the most common. These are assigned to individual vehicles and

are usually carried with the vehicle ignition keys. As an alternative

to datatags Merridale can also support agency cards, datakeys or

simply using the keyboard to enter the vehicle details. (registration

or fleet number). Alternatively a fixed ID tag attached to the vehicle

can communicate with the fuelling point by using a cabled

reader. Of late this method has proved to be an extremely

popular and reliable choice in that it prevents all the potential

swapping and loss of hand held options.

For driver identification and as an additional security factor,

the vehicle driver can also be identified by entering a PIN

or by means of a phob datatag or card swipe. Some fleet

operators require this function to compare the economy

performance for individual drivers who are assigned to

different vehicles.

Distance travelled since the vehicle was fuelled previously is

based on the odometer reading. This can be entered either

manually via the pump keyboard, or obtained electronically

by using a vehicle mounted wireless transducer. Since the

quality of the reports depends on the integrity of this input,

the software can be set up to validate the odometer reading.

To do this the new input is checked against the mileage

entered for the previous fuelling transaction.

New developments include the integration of the depot fuel

management system with odometer or distance travelled data

obtained directly from telematics and the tracking company’s

servers automatically. The final part of the equation, the fuel

drawn and date are recorded on completion of the fuelling

transaction.

One major advantage over other devices is that by measuring

the quantity of fuel that has actually been delivered to the

vehicle fuel tanks, the Fleet operator will have better quality

and more consistent statistics to work with than by using

various other means of calculating fuel usage

Page 39: FORWARDER magazine March 2016 'Eco

FORWARDER magazine March 2016 39

Management Control

Having captured the data the basic purpose of the Fuel

Management system is to present this to the company managers

in an appropriate format. The data can be processed according to

different requirements. Cost accounting needs to be accurate but

not necessarily urgent. On the other hand, a more serious situation

highlighting possible malpractice needs to be processed urgently and

within a restricted distribution.

The web-based reporting service can be set up to provide a

management dash board with real time data feeds showing the

current status of one or multiple fuelling points. In general the

information is organised to suit the user requirements. It can be

consolidated as summary reports available either on demand or

scheduled to be delivered on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. Since

it is a web service, the information can be accessed from any web

browser as and whenever it is required.

REGIONALFOCUS

Many conclusions can be drawn when you hear the term

Latin America, but this is a vast geographical area covering

approximately seven and a half million square miles with

a combined population of 626 million people giving it a rich diversity

of cultures, languages and customs. It is a fascinating place which can

enthral and frustrate, sometimes in equal measure.

Since its inception in 2009, Seafair (UK) Limited has specialised in the

region, selling FCL and LCL services as an NVOCC / wholesaler primarily

to the forwarding industry, serving Mexico in the north right through to

Argentina and Chile in the south and everywhere in between.

We have our own offices established in Chile, Peru, Ecuador, the

USA and Germany.

The volumes we move allow us to offer competitive rates using a range

of different carriers to best suit our clients’ needs, be they cost-driven

or more transit time orientated.

Generally, for freight purposes, the Americas are split into five distinct

territories: North America (including Mexico), Central America,

North Coast Latin America (Colombia & Venezuela), East Coast

South America (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay & Paraguay) and finally

West Coast South America (Chile, Peru, Ecuador).

Each has its own distinct way of doing things. For example, Mexico,

which is one of our biggest markets, is very similar to the way the USA

and Canada work with door deliveries / DAP / DDP terms being a

common occurrence whereas elsewhere in Central and South America,

this is very rare due to the prevalence of laws restricting what freight

agents can do in order to separate their work form that of the customs

brokerage industry. This can cause a few headaches to the uninitiated

and result in costs which were not previously included in the budget!

Many countries have quite specific requirements for documentation

so it really pays to use an NVOCC/carrier that has the necessary

knowledge to hold your hand if necessary and guide you through what

can at times seem a maze of different regulations.

In terms of markets, the main powerhouses of Latin American trade are

Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Chile some of whom have seen

exceptional growth in the past decade. However, the optimism has been

somewhat dented recently particularly in Brazil where various political

scandals and an unprecedented financial downturn have resulted in

difficult trading conditions for many involved in the country.

The economy contracted by 4.5% in the last quarter of 2015 and

according to some sources, exports from China to Brazil dropped

60% in January 2016 compared to the same period last year. This is

mirrored on the Europe/Brazil trade and that from the USA. The

resulting collapse of container freight rates is causing some real

concern. With regard to the UK, export rates are so low that many

lines see Brazil as the new UK/China market but regrettably without

the same scrap business to help bolster container volumes!

The slump in commodity market prices has not helped and has also

impacted on its neighbour Argentina where the IMF recently forecast

negative growth for 2016.

On the Pacific Coast, Chile has suffered the same problem with copper

prices dropping sharply due to the Chinese buying less than previous

years. That said, from a container freight perspective, volumes and

indeed freight rates have been steady over the past year, at least from

Europe, helped in part by the reefer exports.

This has provided some welcome respite from the peaks and troughs

of the East Coast.

Peru and Colombia bucked the downward trend in Latin America with

both reporting very positive financial figures at the end of 2015. With

increasing wealth and young, educated populations, these counties

continue to be exciting options. Again, freight rates are stable and

services quick and reliable. UK exporters should really try and take

advantage of this situation and the prospective opportunities there.

We frequently visit our markets and one of the comments often

made by customers there is the lack of UK sales people visiting them

compared to Germans, Italians, Spanish, Americans and more recently,

the Chinese. To this end the UK Trade & Investment are making efforts

to assist companies looking to expand into these specific markets.

Despite the hopefully short-term issues, which certain parts of Latin

America currently face, the longer-term outlook is still very positive

for the region and we at Seafair will continue to serve and assist those

wishing to entrust us with their LCL or FCL traffic to the area.

M&A for the global freight industry

+44 (0)1454 628772www.headfordgroup.com

The freight forwarding and logistics M&A market has seen

an increasing demand specifically for European road freight

business over the last 12-18 months, and particularly in Q4

2015 and the beginning of 2016.

Historically acquisition interest from a buyer’s perspective has

tended to focus on asset-light air and ocean forwarders, as they

represent the most flexibility and least risk in acquiring freight

business as well as higher margins and less capital outlay.

Headford has seen a change in this trend more recently, not

with a decline of traditional air/ocean interest but an increase in

the number of companies looking to grow their European road

business. They believe this comes in part from a reduction in oil

prices meaning that the overhead cost of operating vehicles has

reduced and therefore presents a much more attractive acquisition

option than it has done previously.

They’ve also noticed that a fair amount of air/ocean

consolidation has already taken place with larger companies

acquiring the air/ocean-focused SME’s, meaning there is less

business out there to be acquired. This has resulted in more

companies looking to diversify into the road freight market,

with a particular interest in Europe.

European road freight, particularly in regards to all EU member

countries, does face some uncertain times ahead with the

decision to be made on the UK’s exit from the EU. However,

the general consensus is that the UK will remain in the EU.

If the decision does swing the other way it is thought to have more

of a regulatory impact as opposed to an effect on demand for

services, as ultimately goods will still need to be shipped between

the UK and Europe. Owners and managers are remaining positive

ahead of these potential changes to the industry.

Larger private and listed companies are required by the

Companies Act 2006 to report on greenhouse gas emissions.

For smaller companies reporting greenhouse gas emissions is

currently voluntary but this is likely to change if the UK is to meet

emissions targets.

In the freight sector, larger and listed companies must already file

directors’ reports stating the annual quantity of greenhouse gas

emissions created by the company.

The UK government is keen for smaller companies, including freight

forwarders not caught by the current mandatory requirements to

follow them. There may be an advantage to those smaller companies

who do so if it helps them assess their own compliance with current

and proposed environmental regulation or use green credentials as

an effective marketing tool. However there are also risks.

The Financial Reporting Council (the body responsible for enforcing

compliance with financial reporting obligations under the Companies

Act 2006) has the power to impose sanctions for failing to compile

company reports properly, even where the error relates to a

voluntary disclosure.

Reporting emissions should therefore be approached with caution but

there is an opportunity here to gain a market advantage.

The calculations are relatively straightforward

but specialist advice should be sought on:

• The FRC reporting requirements

• How to identify the scope of what needs to be

reported – for example third party’s emissions

caused by your activities may be within scope

• Using green credentials in marketing

– there are opportunities but also pitfalls

THE LAST WORD...

NEXTMONTH

Thank you to Alan Tranter, last month's competition winner.

We hope you enjoy the iPad Mini 2! We are extremely

grateful for the amount of great feedback we received,

and we encourage our readers to contact us to offer any feedback.

The FORWARDER team has been working relentlessly to get the

magazine up to scratch; you’ll see a lot of evolution throughout the

coming issues. Just know that we are bearing our audience in mind

when producing every single page.

Our April Issue will be focusing on the upcoming vote on the Brexit.

If this affects you, we want to hear from you. We want to hear your

opinions. FORWARDER will be covering this topic in depth and

we expect to have a variety of responses.

Thanks for your continuing support,

Lauren O'Driscoll, Editor
